Abstract:This article provides an overview of a network-based model of power consumption in Internet infrastructure. This model provides insight into how different parts of the Internet will contribute to network power as Internet access increase over time. The model shows that today the access network dominates the Internet's power consumption and, as access speeds grow, the core network routers will dominate power consumption. The power consumption of data centers and content distribution networks is dominated by the power consumption of data storage for material that is infrequently downloaded and by the transport of the data for material that is frequently downloaded. Based on the model several strategies to improve the energy efficiency of the Internet are presented.

Abstract:Energy consumption is becoming an increasingly important issue throughout the community. For network operators in particular it is a concern as networks expand to deliver increasing traffic levels to increasing numbers of customers. The majority of the energy used by the Internet today is consumed in the access network, and this will continue to be the case for the short-to-mid-term future. Access technologies should thus be a prime focus for energy use mitigation. In this article, we present a detailed analysis of energy consumption in current and future access networks. We present the energy consumption of DSL, HFC networks, passive optical networks, fiber to the node, point-to-point optical systems, UMTS (W-CDMA), and WiMAX. Optical access networks are the most energy efficient of the available access technologies.

Abstract:Price rising of energy and the limitation of fossil fuel makes it an inevitable tendency to introduce distributed energy such as renewable energy to the existing supply system in the future. Different players, such as power generation, transmission, and distribution, along with the value chain must now cooperate and interact with each other by shared interfaces or eventually a customized network for secure and reliable delivery of energy. While smart grids are focusing on the informationization and intellectualization of the existing power grid, the new concept of an energy internet is proposed as an internet-style solution for energy issues by integrating information and power flows bi-directionally, which can be considered as the version 2.0 of smart grids. Some key features of an energy internet compared with conventional energy grid such as openness and peer-to-peer are introduced. Architecture of an energy internet is proposed in details, including energy storage, switches and routers. The definition of an energy internet call for a much greater degree of interactive flexibility for efficient energy management than the present system is designed to handle.

Abstract:Energy efficiency has become a major paradigm in the design and operation of future telecommunication networks. Recent studies show that the aggregate power consumption of in-building IT networks (residential and office) is massive and comparable with that of data centers due to the large number of buildings. In this paper, we analyze the energy efficiency of next-generation in-building IT networks to deliver high-speed mobile access to end users via integrated optical/wireless networks using Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) technology. Based on a validated energy efficiency model, our results show that although individual point-to-point RoF links are not as energy efficient as legacy Baseband-over-Fiber links, RoF networks may actually be more energy-efficient when designed keenly with small cells sizes and when the static energy consumption of the remote units is above a particular threshold. Under the assumptions used in this paper, we show that the DRoF-based architectures can be designed to more energy efficient for cell sizes <17m.

Abstract:Technology solutions must effectively balance economic growth, social equity, and environmental integrity to achieve a sustainable society. Notably, although the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm constitutes a key sustainability enabler, critical issues such as the increasing maintenance operations, energy consumption, and manufacturing/disposal of IoT devices have long-term negative economic, societal, and environmental impacts and must be efficiently addressed. This calls for self-sustainable IoT ecosystems requiring minimal external resources and intervention, effectively utilizing renewable energy sources, and recycling materials whenever possible, thus encompassing energy sustainability. In this work, we focus on energy-sustainable IoT during the operation phase, although our discussions sometimes extend to other sustainability aspects and IoT lifecycle phases. Specifically, we provide a fresh look at energy-sustainable IoT and identify energy provision, transfer, and energy efficiency as the three main energy-related processes whose harmonious coexistence pushes toward realizing self-sustainable IoT systems. Their main related technologies, recent advances, challenges, and research directions are also discussed. Moreover, we overview relevant performance metrics to assess the energy-sustainability potential of a certain technique, technology, device, or network and list some target values for the next generation of wireless systems. Overall, this paper offers insights that are valuable for advancing sustainability goals for present and future generations.

Abstract:Due to the growing impact of the information and communications technology (ICT) sector on electricity usage and greenhouse gas emissions, telecommunication networks require new solutions which will enable the improvement of the energy efficiency of networks. Access networks, which are responsible for the last mile of connectivity and also for one of the largest shares in network energy consumption, are viable candidates for the implementation of new protocols, models and methods which will contribute to the reduction of the energy consumption of such networks. Among the different types of access networks, hybrid fiber–wireless (FiWi) networks are a type of network that combines the capacity and reliability of optical networks with the flexibility and availability of wireless networks, and as such, FiWi networks have begun to be extensively used in modern access networks. However, due to the advent of high-bandwidth applications and Internet of Things networks, the increased energy consumption of FiWi networks has become one of the most concerning challenges required to be addressed. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of the progress in approaches for improving the energy efficiency (EE) of different types of FiWi networks, which include the radio-and-fiber (R&F) networks, the radio-over-fiber networks (RoF), the FiWi networks based on multi-access edge computing (MEC) and the software-defined network (SDN)-based FiWi networks. It also discusses future directions for improving the EE in the FiWi networks.

Abstract:Energy efficiency of electronic digital processors is primarily limited by the energy consumption of electronic communication and interconnects. The industry is almost unanimously pushing towards replacing both long-haul, as well as local chip interconnects, using optics to drastically increase efficiency. In this paper, we explore what comes after the successful migration to optical interconnects, as with this inefficiency solved, the main source of energy consumption will be electronic digital computing, memory and electro-optical conversion. Our approach attempts to address all these issues by introducing efficient all-optical digital computing and memory, which in turn eliminates the need for electro-optical conversions. Here, we demonstrate for the first time a scheme to enable general purpose digital data processing in an integrated form and present our photonic integrated circuit (PIC) implementation. For this demonstration we implemented a URISC architecture capable of running any classical piece of software all-optically and present a comprehensive architectural framework for all-optical computing to go beyond.

Abstract:Energy internet, the results of integration of the energy system and the internet, is the focus and innovation cutting edge of the contemporary international academic and industrial area. It will have disruptive effects on the traditional energy system and the energy industry. The driving force for the raise and development of energy internet is analyzed from environmental, economic, social, technical and policy aspects. This paper surveys the domestic and international development of energy internet, and reviews a variety of energy internet concepts. These concepts emphasize global electric energy interconnection, or multi-energy coupling or energy information integration respectively, and have a gap from the ideal energy internet. This paper regards energy internet as the results of integration of the energy system and the internet, inclusive existing concepts but with more profound contents. The key idea of energy internet is openness and the key feature is the deep integration of the internet ideas and technologies. The basic architecture includes“internet-like energy system” and“internet+”. Several basic science problems of energy internet in the system level are proposed. The development of energy internet will effectively promote the energy market, efficiency and greenization, and make the large traditional energy industry a fertile ground for people’s innovation and entrepreneurship.

Abstract:The climate change crisis, exacerbated by the global dependency of fossil fuels, has brought significant challenges. In the medium to long term, extensive renewable-energy-based electrification is considered to be one of the most promising development paths to address these challenges. However, this is tangible only if the energy infrastructure can accommodate renewable energy sources and distributed energy resources, such as batteries and heat pumps, without adversely affecting power grid operations. To realize renewable-energy-based electrification goals, a new concept—the Energy Internet (EI)—has been proposed, inspired by the most recent advances in information and telecommunication network technologies. Recently, many measures have also been taken to practically implement the EI. Although these EI models share many ideas, a definitive universal definition of the EI is yet to be agreed. Additionally, some studies have proposed protocols and architectures, but a generalized technological overview is still missing. An understanding of the technologies that underpin and encompass the current and future EI is very important to push toward a standardized version of the EI that will eventually make it easier to implement it across the world. In this paper, we first examine and analyze the typical popular definitions of the EI in scientific literature. Based on definitions, assumptions, scope, and application areas, the scientific literature is then classified into four different groups representing the way in which the papers have approached the EI. Then, we synthesize these definitions and concepts, and keeping in mind the future smart grid, we propose a new universal definition of the EI. We also identify the underlying key technologies for managing, coordinating, and controlling the multiple (distributed or not) subsystems with their own particular challenges. The survey concludes by highlighting the main challenges facing a future EI-based energy system and indicating core requirements in terms of system complexity, security, standardization, energy trading and business models and social acceptance.
Greener, Energy-Efficient and Sustainable Networks: State-Of-The-Art and New Trends

Abstract:Although information and communications technologies (ICTs) have the potential of enabling powerful social, economic and environmental benefits, ICT systems give a non-negligible contribution to world electricity consumption and carbon dioxide (CO2) footprint. This contribution will sustain since the increased demand for user's connectivity and an explosion of traffic volumes necessitate continuous expansion of current ICTs services and deployment of new infrastructures and technologies which must ensure the expected user experiences and performance. In this paper, analyses of costs for the global annual energy consumption of telecommunication networks, estimation of ICT sector CO2 footprint contribution and predictions of energy consumption of all connected user-related devices and equipment in the period 2011-2030 are presented. Since presented estimations of network energy consumption trends for main communication sectors by 2030 shows that highest contribution to global energy consumption will come from wireless access networks and data centres (DCs), the rest of the paper analyses technologies and concepts which can contribute to the energy-efficiency improvements of these two sectors. More specifically, different paradigms for wireless access networks such as millimetre-wave communications, Long-Term Evolution in unlicensed spectrum, ultra-dense heterogeneous networks, device-to-device communications and massive multiple-input multiple-output communications have been analysed as possible technologies for improvement of wireless networks energy efficiency. Additionally, approaches related to the DC resource management, DCs power management, green DC monitoring and thermal management in DCs have been discussed as promising approaches to improvement of DC power usage efficiency. For each of analysed technologies, future research challenges and open issues have been summarised and discussed. Lastly, an overview of the accepted papers in the Special Issue dedicated to the green, energy-efficient and sustainable networks is presented.

Abstract:The growing popularity of Internet of Things (IoT) applications brings new challenges to the wireless communication community. Numerous smart devices and sensors within IoT will generate a massive amount of short data packets. Future wireless transmission systems need to support the reliable transmission of such small data with extremely high energy efficiency. In this article, we introduce a novel data-oriented approach for characterizing the energy efficiency of wireless transmission strategies for IoT applications. Specifically, we present new energy efficiency performance limits targeting at individual data transmission sessions. Through preliminary analysis on two channel-adaptive transmission strategies, we develop several important design guidelines on green transmission of small data. We also present several promising future applications of the proposed data-oriented energy efficiency characterization.

Abstract:The telecommunications and information community today is facing daunting challenges but also embracing great opportunities. The unprecedented expansion of wireline and wireless networks has resulted in a tremendous increase in energy consumption and left a significant environmental footprint. Recently, it has been reported that energy costs can account for as much as half of a mobile service provider's annual operating expenses. If the aggregate energy consumption of networking devices were to follow the growth trajectories of Internet traffic (i.e., about 50 percent per year), the environmental and financial consequences would be dire. Thus, making information and communications technology (ICT) equipment and applications energy-efficient could not only have a tangible positive impact on the environment, but also help telecommunications operators attain long-term profitability. Moreover, energy-efficient communications can help the world reduce its dependence on fossil fuel, enable demand response and distributed energy resources, and ultimately achieve sustainable prosperity. Accordingly, a myriad of communications and information technologies have already been exploited by the global smart grid initiatives to empower the conventional power grid to support two-way energy and information flow.

Abstract:The large-scale exploitation and utilization of renewable energy will become a major global energy development trends. How to implement extensive interconnection of distributed renewable energy and how to increase energy efficiency and flexibility of the energy system are key problems. Energy internet based on the concept of the internet has become the main trend in this area. Energy internet will bring great changes to energy exploitation, allocation, consumption and all aspects of human life, and this series of changes bring a more comprehensive and stringent requirements to information and communication systems. The needs for energy internet and information and communication technologies are fully analyzed, and then the information and communication architecture for energy internet based on power electricity is presented. Against the background of the energy internet application, more than twenty key information and communication technologies from collecting and monitoring, processing, analysis decision, fundamental resource, security guarantee and support system are introduced. At last, prospect on hot spots and the development direction of energy internet is concluded.
Attojoule Optoelectronics for Low-Energy Information Processing and Communications: a Tutorial Review

Abstract:Optics offers unique opportunities for reducing energy in information processing and communications while resolving the problem of interconnect bandwidth density inside machines. Such energy dissipation overall is now at environmentally significant levels; the source of that dissipation is progressively shifting from logic operations to interconnect energies. Without the prospect of substantial reduction in energy per bit communicated, we cannot continue the exponential growth of our use of information. The physics of optics and optoelectronics fundamentally addresses both interconnect energy and bandwidth density, and optics may be the only scalable solution to such problems. Here we summarize the corresponding background, status, opportunities, and research directions for optoelectronic technology and novel optics, including sub-femtojoule devices in waveguide and novel 2D array optical systems. We compare different approaches to low-energy optoelectronic output devices and their scaling, including lasers, modulators and LEDs, optical confinement approaches (such as resonators) to enhance effects, and the benefits of different material choices, including 2D materials and other quantum-confined structures. Beyond the elimination of line charging by the use optical connections, the next major interconnect dissipations are in the electronic circuits for receiver amplifiers, timing recovery and multiplexing. We can address these through the integration of photodetectors to reduce or eliminate receiver circuit energies, free-space optics to eliminate the need for timing and multiplexing circuits (while solving bandwidth density problems), and using optics generally to save power by running large synchronous systems. One target concept is interconnects from ~ 1 cm to ~ 10 m that have the same energy (~ 10fJ/bit) and simplicity as local electrical wires on chip.
