Abstract:ABSTRACTA temperature memory effect means a shape‐memory material can remember its deformation temperature. In general, a higher deformation temperature requires a higher activation temperature for shape recovery. In this work, we demonstrate that the unloading temperature can also significantly influence the shape‐memory performance. A series of shape‐memory tests are performed on Nafion while varying the loading and unloading temperatures. The results show that the loading temperature determines the final shape‐recovery region, while the unloading temperature influences the onset recovery region. We also develop a finite‐deformation viscoelastic model to investigate the above findings. The simulation results show good agreement with the experimental data, though the model predicts the recovery region occurring at a lower temperature. The model is further used to study the effects of the loading rate, unloading rate, and the holding time on the shape‐memory behaviors. The results suggest that a smaller loading rate and unloading rate and a longer holding time can shift the recovery region to a higher temperature. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Abstract:A polymer triple-shape memory effect represents one of the most recent discoveries in the rapidly expanding field of shape memory polymers. It refers to the capability of a polymer to memorize two temporary shapes and subsequently recover them, all in one shape memory cycle. Although several examples of triple-shape polymers had been reported in the literature, they were notably evaluated under very different thermo-mechanical conditions. In this study, the effect of various thermo-mechanical conditions on the polymer triple-shape properties was investigated using Nafion as a model material. The choice of the programming and recovery heating methods in constructing triple-shape cycles was found to have a profound impact on the triple-shape properties. As such, the results of this study provided useful reference for future development of triple-shape polymers.
Tunable Shape-Memory Behaviors in Amorphous Polymers Through Bound Solvent

Abstract:Shape-memory polymers (SMP) have been widely applied in biomedical areas as vascular stents, occlusion devices, fracture fixators, etc. The shape recovery region is the key factor for the performance of the SMP-based devices. In this paper, we describe a feasible method to tune the shape-recovery region of amorphous polymers. A lightly crosslinked acrylate polymer is synthesized and treated by isopropyl alcohol for a different amount of time. The dynamic mechanical analysis shows that the glass transition region is lowered by 25-75 degrees C through varying the immersion time in isopropyl alcohol. The dry and wet polymers all show excellent thermally-induced shape-memory behaviors, while the shape-recovery region can be adjusted as much as 70 degrees C. The method is universal, which can be applied to other polymer-solvent systems to achieve tunable shape-memory behaviors. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Shape-memory polymers (SMPs) have emerged as a multi-functional materials platform and have been proposed for a variety of applications ranging from simple actuators to biomedical devices. The shape-memory cycle is demonstrated through a three-step process of programming, storage, and recovery. In this paper, recent findings that associate each step of the shape-memory cycle to unique recovery behavior are highlighted. The article focuses on the influence of deformation temperature, long-term storage (physical aging), partially constrained recovery, and mechanically driven recovery with respect to shape-memory behavior.

Abstract:Device applications of shape memory polymers demand diverse shape changing geometries, which are currently limited to non-omnidirectional movement. This restriction originates from traditional thermomechanical programming methods such as uniaxial, biaxial stretching, bending, or compression. A solvent-modulated programming method is reported to achieve an omnidirectional shape memory behavior. The method utilizes freeze drying of hydrogels of polyethylene glycol networks with a melting transition temperature around 50 °C in their dry state. Such a process creates temporarily fixed macroporosity, which collapses upon heating, leading to significant omnidirectional shrinkage. These shrunken materials can swell in water to form hydrogels again and the omnidirectional programming and recovery can be repeated. The fixity ratio (R f ) and recovery ratio (R r ) can be maintained at 90% and 98% respectively upon shape memory multicycling. The maximum linear recoverable strain, as limited by the maximum swelling, is ≈90%. Amongst various application potentials, one can envision the fabrication of multiphase composites by taking advantages of the omnidirectional shrinkage from a porous polymer to a denser structure.

Abstract:Due to the intrinsic properties of polymers, medical applications have been the primary targets for the development of shape memory polymers (SMPs) exhibiting softness at body temperature, biocompatibility, high deformability, good shape recovery (Rr) and good shape fixity (Rf). However, there is an increasing need for developing smart materials that would meet the drastically different requirements imposed by applications where, instead, high strength well above room temperature, durability, stability, and high thermo-mechanical endurance are necessary. Here, we present results obtained on a series of shape memory (SM) epoxies that appear promising base materials for such applications. The influence of molecular and structural design on their physical and SM properties were studied. The impact of various SM programming conditions (i.e., deformation load, recovery heating rate, number of cycles, and isothermal holding times in the hot and cold deformed shapes) was also investigated. The instantaneous SM behavior was found similar for all the networks with Rf and Rr values nearing 100% above 6 to 7% strain. The SM performances strongly depended on the strain-dependent thermal expansion/contraction of the materials during thermo-mechanical cycling. Networks with lower crosslink density, higher chain flexibility and/or mobility showed reduced SM performances, further diminished by more stringent thermo-mechanical cycling conditions.

Abstract:High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) has been investigated as a remote and controlled activation method to noninvasively actuate shape memory polymers (SMPs), specifically in biomedical applications. However, the effects of aqueous environment on shape recoverability of in vivo HIFU-actuated SMPs have yet to be explored. HIFU directs sound waves into a millimeter-sized tightly focused region. In this study, the response of hydrophilic and hydrophobic photopolymerized thermoset SMP networks under HIFU activation in an aqueous environment was investigated. Acrylate-based SMP networks were copolymerized in specific ratios to produce networks with independently adjusted glass transition temperatures ranging from 40 to 80 °C and two distinct water uptake behaviors. The results link the polymer swelling behavior to shape recoverability in various acoustic fields. The presence of absorbed water molecules enhances the performance of SMPs in terms of their shape memory capabilities when activated by HIFU. Overall, understanding the interplay between water uptake and HIFU-actuated shape recovery is essential for optimizing the performance of SMPs in aqueous environments and advancing their use in various medical applications.

Abstract:Following deformation, thermally induced shape memory polymers(SMPs) have the ability to recover their original shape with a change in temperature. In this work, the thermomechanical properties and shape memory behaviors of three types of epoxy SMPs with varying curing agent contents were investigated using a molecular dynamics(MD) method. The mechanical properties under uniaxial tension at different temperatures were obtained, and the simulation results compared reasonably with experimental data. In addition, in a thermomechanical cycle, ideal shape memory effects for the three types of SMPs were revealed through the shape frozen and shape recovery responses at low and high temperatures, respectively, indicating that the recovery time is strongly influenced by the ratio of E-51 to 4,4’-Methylenedianiline.

Abstract:ABSTRACTWe present an experimental and modeling study of the effect of programming conditions on the shape‐memory behaviors of amorphous thermoplastic polymers. Experimentally we measure the influence of deformation temperature, strain rate and relaxation time on the thermomechanical properties and shape‐memory response of poly(para‐phenylene), which is a stiff and strong aromatic thermoplastic. To understand the underlying mechanism, we develop a viscoelastic model, which contains multiple discrete relaxation processes with broad distribution of relaxation time. The model parameters of the relaxation spectrum are obtained from the master curve of small strain–stress relaxation tests using time‐temperature superposition. The model predictions show good agreement with experimental observations, including the stress response and shape‐memory response under various conditions. We applied the model to study the effect of the programming conditions on the shape recovery performance. The results show that the relaxation modulus at the end of the programming process was a predictor of the recovery speed and recoverable strain ratio. Abstract:Thermoplastic polyolefin elastomers which are soft and easy processing have potential usage for non-structural applications. The thermal, mechanical and shape memory properties of this thermoplastic elastomers were investigated with differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) and dynamic mechanic analysis (DMA). The results showed that was important for the better shape memory with both of the shape fixity rate and shape recovery rate up to 90%can be reached by choosing a proper deforming temperature in a broad range of melting temperature.

Abstract:This study investigated the mechanical and shape recovery properties of a styrene-based shape memory polymer composite reinforced by cup-stacked carbon nanotubes. Due to their unique morphology, cup-stacked carbon nanotubes could be well dispersed in the polymer matrix and offer remarkable benefits in the load transfer between the reinforcement fillers and shape memory polymer. Under the same amount of fillers, shape memory polymer composites embedded with cup-stacked carbon nanotubes exhibit superior mechanical properties in comparison with those embedded with multiwalled carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers. The elastic modulus, tensile strength, and flexural strength of the 2 wt% cup-stacked carbon nanotube–reinforced shape memory polymer composite increased by 61%, 66%, and 84%, respectively. It was also found that the glass transition temperature of shape memory polymer composite decreased from 61.9°C to 52.8°C by introducing 2 wt% cup-stacked carbon nanotubes, indicating that the shape recovery process could be triggered more easily by external stimulus due to the role of reinforcement fillers. Finally, under the external resistance load, the developed shape memory polymer composite was successfully driven to recover their shapes under thermal stimulus. The cup-stacked carbon nanotubes were proved to be a promising candidate for the polymer reinforcement.

Abstract:This work presented a parameter study to investigate the influence of material properties and loading conditions on the recovery performance of amorphous shape memory polymers using a recently developed thermoviscoelastic model. The model incorporated the time-dependent effects of both structural relaxation—using a nonlinear Adam-Gibbs model—and viscoelasticity. The model can predict well the unconstrained strain recovery response and stress evolution during constrained recovery process. The materials properties and the loading parameters, including the cooling rate, the annealing time, and the heating rate, were varied one by one to compare the effects on the start and end temperatures and recovery time of the unconstrained recovery response and on the stress hysteresis of the constrained recovery response. The results confirmed experimental observations that unconstrained strain recovery response was mostly influenced by viscoelasticity, while the constrained recovery response resulted from the interaction of many different mechanisms, including structural and stress relaxation, thermal expansion, the modulus of rubbery and glass state. The results also showed that the cooling and heating rates had the largest influence on both recovery responses.

Abstract:Traditional shape memory polymers (SMPs) are those capable of memorizing a temporary shape and recovering to the permanent shape upon heating. Although such a basic concept has been known for half a century, recent progresses have challenged the conventional understanding of the polymer shape memory effect and significantly expanded the practical potential of SMPs. In this article, notable recent advances in the field of SMPs are highlighted. Particular emphasis is placed on how the new developments have changed the conventional view of SMPs, what they mean for practical applications, and where the future opportunities are.

Abstract:Shape-memory materials hold great potential to impart medical devices with functionalities useful during implantation, locomotion, drug delivery, and removal. However, their clinical translation is limited by a lack of non-invasive and precise methods to trigger and control the shape recovery, especially for devices implanted in deep tissues. In this study, the application of image-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) heating is tested. Magnetic resonance-guided HIFU triggered shape-recovery of a device made of polyurethane urea while monitoring its temperature by magnetic resonance thermometry. Deformation of the polyurethane urea in a live canine bladder (5 cm deep) is achieved with 8 seconds of ultrasound-guided HIFU with millimeter resolution energy focus. Tissue sections show no hyperthermic tissue injury. A conceptual application in ureteral stent shape-recovery reduces removal resistance. In conclusion, image-guided HIFU demonstrates deep energy penetration, safety and speed.

Abstract:Seven epoxy-amine polymers showing shape memory (SM) properties were synthesized. Tunable thermal and mechanical properties with glass transition temperatures ranging from 44 to 93 °C were obtained by varying the molecular structures. The epoxy showed excellent SM properties with shape fixity and shape recovery reaching completeness above about 5% strains. The instantaneous SM behavior was found to be independent of materials structure or properties; however, more stringent experimental conditions were found to be detrimental to SM properties for the networks with lower crosslink density and/or higher molecular flexibility/mobility. Indeed, the impact of the shape memory cycling conditions on the SM behavior was investigated. Specifically, the deformation load, the recovery heating rate, the number of SM cycles, and the holding time in the deformed or temporary shape were varied. The mechanical and SM properties of the materials were characterized using dynamic mechanical analysis in tensile mode.

Abstract:The low recovery stress has limited utilizing shape-memory polymers (SMPs) as actuators. In this work, we demonstrate that the resultant recovery stress of amorphous SMPs can be significantly increased through cold programming. A three-dimensional model is formulated to describe the thermo-mechanical behavior and shape-memory performance of amorphous polymers in large deformation. The constitutive relationship is derived based on the two-temperature thermodynamic framework employing an effective temperature as a thermodynamic state variable to describe the nonequilibrium structure of amorphous polymers. The model also incorporates the molecular orientation with a relaxation mechanism to describe strain hardening. The model is applied to simulate the stress-strain relationship and stress relaxation behaviors of an amorphous SMP in the programming process and the stress response in the constrained recovery process. The model can accurately reproduce the measured stress response at different temperatures and loading rates. Both experimental and simulation results show that polymers deformed at a larger loading rate exhibit a lower stress in the holding period, though simulation pronouncedly underestimates the magnitude of stress drop in the stress relaxation process. The model also captures the magnitude and location of the peak stress during the constrained recovery process for SMPs programmed at different temperatures and with different applied strains.
