Abstract:Constructing large lattice mismatch interfaces, especially two-dimensional materials such as MoS2, is the key to reaching the structural lubricity of heterogeneous structures. Large lattice mismatch prevents the nucleation of reinforcement of composite material, such as in situ synthesized MoS2 during the PEO process, thus affecting the mechanical performance. In this work, a precursor reaction, which can form an amorphous MoS3/TiO2 mixtures, is proposed, and the MoS2/TiO2 noncoherent interface with large mismatch is obtained through solid-state in situ desulfurization of suspended S with the action of reheat. Meanwhile, the precursor reaction is strongly dependent on the sulfur source concentration, which can form the interface with a large number of interfacial dislocations by regulating the concentration of sulfur source. Such edge pining noncoherent interface enables more dislo-cation and distortion near interface during scratch, which reduces the twist-angle dependence thus further improving the tribological properties. Additionally, these results render the herein presented amorphous pre-cursor reaction strategy generally applicable for exhibiting broad application of in situ synthesis of reinforcement.
Oxygen Effects on the Structure and Hydrogenation Activity of the MoS2 Active Site: A Mechanism Study by DFT Calculation

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) calculation with numerical atomic functions is used to study oxygen effects on MoS2 hydrotreating active sites. The optimal form of oxygen on active sites is first investigated by experimentation and calculation. Then, the fine structures of a MoS2 nanocluster (S-Mo-S) and an oxygen containing MoS2 nanocluster (O-Mo-S) under reaction conditions, as well as their hydrodesulfurization (HDS) selectivity towards thiophene, are calculated. The results show that bent MoS2 nanoclusters in supported hydrotreating catalysts are more thermodynamically stable when oxygen is substituted for sulfur on the basal plane. Oxygen also reduces the electron density and unoccupied d-orbital energy levels of Mb atoms. The S atoms on the Mo-edge are also more readily substituted by H on O-Mo-S. During thiophene HDS, O-Mo-S has a stronger thiophene adsorption ability than S-Mo-S. Hydrogen transfer has a higher energy requirement along the Mo-edge on O-Mo-S than on S-Mo-S. The hydrogenation saturation activity to C=C is lower on the Mo-edge of O-Mo-S than of S-Mo-S, whereas the hydrogenolysis activity at the C-S bond is promoted by oxygen. It is predicted that the oxygen can increase the hydrogenolysis selectivity of a MoS2 active nanocluster. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Edge Reconstruction-Dependent Growth Kinetics of MoS2

Abstract:Understanding the growth mechanisms of multielement two-dimensional (2D) crystals is challenging because of the unbalanced stoichiometry and possible reconstruction of their edges. Here, we present a systematic theoretical study on the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth mechanism of MoS2. We found that the growth kinetics of MoS2 highly depends on its edge reconstruction determined by concentrations of Mo and S in the growth environment. Based on the calculated energies of nucleation and propagation of various MoS2 edges, we predicted the transition of a MoS2 island growth from a regime of a triangle enclosed by Mo-terminated zigzag edges that are passivated by 50% S (Mo-II edges), to a regime of continuous evolution within a triangle, hexagon, and inverted triangle with 75%-S-terminated edges (S-III edges) and Mo-II edges, and finally to a regime of triangles with Mo-terminated zigzag edges that are passivated by 100% S (Mo-III edges) by tuning the growth condition from Mo-rich to S-rich, which provides a reasonable explanation to many experimental observations. This study provides a general guideline on theoretical studies of 2D crystals' growth mechanisms, deepens our understanding on the growth mechanism of multielement 2D crystals, and is beneficial for the controllable synthesis of various 2D crystals.
IR Spectroscopic Evidence for MoS 2 Morphology Change with Sulfidation Temperature on MoS 2 /Al 2 O 3 Catalyst

Abstract:Low temperature CO adsorption followed by IR spectroscopy (IR/CO) characterization was used to depict the MoS2 morphology change with sulfidation temperature on MoS2/Al2O3 catalyst. It is found that the morphology of MoS2 slabs on MoS2/Al2O3 catalyst under typical sulfidation temperature range (573 to 723 K) is a truncated triangle exposing both the M-edge and S-edge. Moreover, the IR/CO data indicate that the truncation degree (ratio of S-edge/M-edge) of MoS2 slabs gradually increases with increasing sulfidation temperature. This finding is in line with density functional theory calculation on model catalysts, providing IR evidence of MoS2 morphology change with sulfidation temperature on an Al2O3-supported catalyst. As a further step, it is also found that the MoS2 morphology is strongly influenced by MoS2-Al2O3 interactions under the same sulfidation temperature.
New Insight into the Support Effect on HDS Catalysts: Evidence for the Role of Mo-support Interaction on the MoS2 Slab Morphology

Abstract:MoS2 catalysts were prepared on Al2O3, SiO2 and TiO2 support. On the oxidic forms, Raman and UV–vis characterizations show the strong Mo-TiO2 interaction and the weak Mo-SiO2 one that leads to a poorer Mo dispersion. MoS2 nanoparticles were then studied by TEM and adsorption of CO followed by infra-red spectroscopy which allows the distinction and quantification of the two stable edges namely the S- and M- edges. It appears that the slab morphology is strongly modified by the support nature: thus the stronger the MoS2-support interaction the higher the S-/M- edge ratio. Finally, MoS2 morphology impacts the catalytic activity in thiophene HDS: (1) an increase of the S-/M- edge ratio leads to the increase of the TOF value for Mo sulfided supported on Al2O3 and SiO2; (2) a specific behavior with high TOF value of mainly M-edge sites and strong hydrogenating properties is underlined for Mo/TiO2.

Abstract:Strategies for harmonizing the construction of an active site and the building of electron transport for a hybrid MoS2 catalyst are crucial for its application in electrochemical reactions. In this work, an accurate and facile hydrothermal strategy was proposed to fabricate the active center of Co-O-Mo on a supported MoS2 catalyst by forming a CoMoSO phase on the edge of MoS2, yielding (Co-O)x- MoSy (x = 0, 0.3, 0.6, 1, 1.5, or 2.1). This work offers a new perspective for the active mechanism of metallic-heteroatom-dopant electrocatalysts and further boosts research on the development of noble/non-noble hybrid electrocatalysts in the future.

Abstract:Citric acid was used as chelating agent to prepare a series of MOS2/Al2O3 catalysts. CO adsorption followed by infrared spectroscopy characterization (IR/CO) was employed to probe the M-edge and S-edge of MOS2 slabs on these catalysts. Addition of citric acid promotes the growth of S-edge, whereas it inhibits that of M-edge: The morphology of MoS2 is progressively modified from a slightly truncated triangle with predominately M-edge to a hexagon with both M-edge and S-edge with increasing citric acid amount. Such morphology change is of great importance to the catalytic performance as M-edge and S-edge demonstrate different reactivity in hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reactions. Indeed, IR/CO data reveal that sulfur vacancy creation occurs more easily on M-edge, whereas at room temperature, thiophene tends to adsorb more strongly on S-edge. Moreover, parallel between IR/CO study and HDS test shows that S-edge has a higher intrinsic activity than M-edge in thiophene HDS reaction. (C) 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
Effect of High Pressure Sulfidation on the Morphology and Reactivity of MoS2 Slabs on MoS2/Al2O3 Catalyst Prepared with Citric Acid

Abstract:MoS2/Al2O3 catalysts were prepared by a simultaneous impregnation method with citric acid as chelating agent in order to investigate the effect of high pressure sulfidation on the morphology and reactivity of MoS2 slabs by infrared spectroscopy of CO adsorption (IR/CO), transmission electron microscopy, thiophene hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and 2,6-dimethylaniline hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) reactions. It is found that the MoS2 slabs are more truncated when sulfided at higher pressure, exposing larger S-edge/M-edge ratio. The thiophene HDS activity of MoS2/Al2O3 catalysts was significantly improved by high pressure sulfidation. The MoS2 edges formed after high pressure sulfidation are very stable toward H-2-treatment, while the same H-2-treatment can create sulfur vacancies on both M-edge and S-edge of the 0.1 MPa sulfided MoS2 slabs. Meanwhile, parallel between the IR/CO results and HDN test suggests that the S-edge favors the C-N bond scission whereas the M-edge benefits the hydrogenation in HDN reaction. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. How Doped MoS2 Breaks Transition-Metal Scaling Relations for CO2 Electrochemical Reduction

Abstract:Linear scaling relationships between the adsorption energies of CO2 reduction intermediates pose a fundamental limitation to the catalytic efficiency of transition metal catalysts. Significant improvements in CO2 reduction activity beyond transition metals require the stabilization of key intermediates, COOH* and CHO* or COH*, independent of CO*. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we show that the doped sulfur edge of MoS2 satisfies this requirement by binding CO* significantly weaker than COOH*, CHO*, and COH*, relative to transition-metal surfaces. The structural basis for the scaling of doped sulfur edge of MoS2 is due to CO* binding on the metallic site (doping metal) and COOH*, CHO*, and COH* on the covalent site (sulfur). Linear scaling relations still exist if all the intermediates bind to the same site, but the combined effect of the two binding sites results in an overall deviation from transition-metal scaling lines. This principle can be applied to other metal/p-block materials. We rationalize the weak binding of CO* on the sulfur site with distortion/interaction and charge density difference analyses.
Olefin Metathesis over Heterogeneous Catalysts: Interfacial Interaction Between Mo Species and a Hβ−Al2O3 Composite Support

Abstract:The effect of molybdenum content on the structure and performance of Mo/H beta-Al2O3 catalysts in olefin metathesis was examined. The optimal performance was obtained with a catalyst of 4-6 wt % Mo on a composite support of 70% H beta zeolite and 30% Al2O3. The interfacial interaction between the Mo species and the H beta-Al2O3 composite support was carefully studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption, and multinuclear magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (MAS NMR) spectroscopy. XRD and N-2 adsorption results indicate that some interactions may occur between the Mo species and the composite support during the sample preparation. Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR spectra show that this kind of interaction becomes more severe and leads to the dealumination of the framework and subsequent appearance of aluminum molybdate with increasing Mo loadings. Two-dimensional Al-27 MQ MAS NMR spectra further demonstrate that the framework Al on H beta zeolite at the specific T sites could be preferentially extracted upon Mo loading, which may result in the appropriate Bronsted acidity on the support as evidenced by the quantitative H-1 MAS NMR measurements. A moderate interaction of Mo species with the support and the proper acidity may be advantageous for the cross-metathesis of ethene and 2-butene to propene over heterogeneous catalysts.
The Tune Effect of Surface Pt/Mo Ratio on the Stability and Morphology of α-MoC surfaces

Abstract:The influence of the loaded-Pt atoms on the stability and morphology of α-MoC haven't been studied before, which is important for developing high-performance Pt/MoC catalyst. Hence, seven surfaces of α-MoC with ten terminals were selected to research the effects of Pt/Mo ratio on the stability and morphology of α-MoC under CH4/H2 and CO/CO2 atmospheres. The calculations demonstrate that although the stability of all the surfaces are increased with the increasing of Pt/Mo ratio, only few facets could be exposed under the research conditions. At low Pt/Mo ratio, (113)-Mo is the only exposed surface at 0K and 600K, while a certain proportion of (100) surface appears at 1000K under CH4/H2; (113)-C is the only exposed surface at 0K, whereas the (100) is the exclusive surface at 600K and 1000K under CO/CO2. At high Pt/Mo ratio, the influence becomes obvious. Under CH4/H2, the exposed surface was tuned from (113)-Mo to (111)-Mo at 0K, the (100) facets disappears at 1000K, while the (113)-Mo surface is unchanged at 600K. Under CO/CO2, the (113)-C surface is still the only exposed surface at 0K, which changes into (100), (012) and (113)-C at 600K, and into (100), (012) and (113)-Mo at 1000K.

Molecular Simulation Study on Intrinsic Order of Interaction Between Single Slab of Active Phase and Al-Si Support in Hds Catalysts

Abstract:Molecular mechanics and quantum mechanics simulations, as molecular simulation methods, were performed to investigate the effects of different surfaces, the promoter Co/Ni, the active phase of MoS(2) or WS(2), the content of Si and other factors on the order of interaction between the MoS(2) (WS(2)) single slab and the support surface. The influence of Si content was studied by molecular mechanics, and an advantageous Si content was found. Various surfaces, promoters and active phases also played an important role in the interaction between the support surfaces and active phases, and some significant trends were found out. Quantum mechanics simulation was performed to study the possible effect of electrostatic interaction between the support and the active phase, upon which the calculations suggested that the existence of a favorable Si content was possible. The electronic effects of Co/Ni promoter and the intensity of Co/Mo/Ni/W/Li/Al/Si species bonded to the alumina support were also investigated by quantum mechanics, and it was found that the different electronic effects of Co and Ni might bring forth some obvious influences on the interaction between the support and the active phase. And the results of comparing the intensity of Co/Mo/Ni/W/Li/Al/Si species bonded to the support can also explain the different interaction intensity in various catalyst systems.
Influence of Active Phase Structure of CoMo/Al2O3 Catalyst on the Selectivity of Hydrodesulfurization and Hydrodearomatization

Abstract:The relationship between the morphology and the selectivity of the sulfide phase in the hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of 4,6-dimethyldibenzothiophene (4,6-DMDBT) and hydrodearomatization (HDA) reaction of 1-methylnaphthalene (1-MN) was studied. The morphology of the CoMo catalyst was tuned by increasing the metal content and adding organic compounds. The concentration of CoMoS sites at the corners (C(CoMoSc) and edges C(CoMoSE)) of the sulfide slabs were measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopytechniques. The corner and edge sites of the sulfide phase account for the direct desulfurization (DDS) and hydrogenation desulfurization (HYDS) routes in the HDS of 4,6-DMDBT, respectively. The hydrogen consumption analysis showed that the HYDS of 4,6-DMDBT and HDA of 1-MN both occur at the edge sites of the MoS2 slabs. The HYDS route in 4,6-DMDBT HDS was more promoted than the 1-MN HDA reaction when the stacking was increased. The turnover frequency of the corner sites for the DDS reaction and edge sites for the HYDS and HDA reactions were correlated with the length and stacking of the sulfide phase. The results revealed how the selectivities of the DDS, HYDS and HDA reactions as well as the hydrogen consumption can be tuned by modifying the morphology of the sulfide phase. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. Substrate Facet Effect on the Growth of Monolayer MoS2 on Au Foils.

Abstract:MoS2 on polycrystalline metal substrates emerges as an intriguing growth system compared to that on insulating substrates due to its direct application as an electrocatalyst in hydrogen evolution. However, the growth is still indistinct with regard to the effects of the inevitably evolved facets. Herein, we demonstrate for the first time that the crystallography of Au foil substrates can mediate a strong effect on the growth of monolayer MoS2, where large-domain single-crystal MoS2 triangles are more preferentially evolved on Au(100) and Au(110) facets than on Au(111) at relative high growth temperatures (>680 °C). Intriguingly, this substrate effect can be weakened at a low growth temperature (∼530 °C), reflected with uniform distributions of domain size and nucleation density among the different facets. The preferential nucleation and growth on some specific Au facets are explained from the facet-dependent binding energy of MoS2 according to density functional theory calculations. In brief, this work should shed light on the effect of substrate crystallography on the synthesis of monolayer MoS2, thus paving the way for achieving batch-produced, large-domain or domain size-tunable growth through an appropriate selection of the growth substrate.
Infrared Spectroscopic Evidence of WS2 Morphology Change With Citric Acid Addition and Sulfidation Temperature

Abstract:MS 2 morphology is strongly influenced by several parameters including the addition of a chelating agent and sulfidation temperature. In this work, we report the use of citric acid as chelating agent in order to prepare a series of WS 2 /Al 2 O 3 catalysts that were submitted to sulfidation at several temperatures. The effect of these two parameters in the morphology of the slabs was explored by means of CO adsorption at low temperature followed by IR spectroscopy (IR/CO) and later confirmed by High-Resolution Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy coupled with High Angular Annular Dark Field detector (HR STEM - HAADF). This allowed to depict the morphology of WS 2 slabs by means of calculating the M-edge/S-edge site ratio. The use of citric acid in the preparation stage favors the increase of S-edge site concentration whereas it keeps that of M-edge sites: according to IR/CO, with an increasing amount of citric acid, the WS 2 morphology progressively changes from a slightly truncated triangle exhibiting predominantly M edges to a hexagon with both M edge and S edge. In addition, HR STEM-HAADF demonstrated that the addition of citric acid in the impregnation step of W catalysts considerably reduces the size of WS 2 nanoparticles increasing their dispersion degree. The morphology of the WS 2 plates on the activated WS 2 /Al 2 O 3 catalyst with a typical sulfidation temperature range (573–673 K) was detected to be a truncated triangle exposing both the M-edge and the S-edge. Furthermore, the IR/CO results indicate that the degree of truncation (ratio of S-edge/M-edge) of WS 2 slabs gradually rises with the increasing sulfidation temperature. However, the most determining factor for a modification of the morphology of the slabs turns out to be the presence of citric acid as a chelating agent and not the sulfidation temperature. This change in morphology (i.e., change of S-edge/M-edge ratio) is a key factor for catalytic performance, since the M-edge and the S-edge show different reactivity in hydrodesulfurization (HDS) reactions. Notably, it was also found that the addition of citric acid not only improves the catalytic activity but also the stability of the catalysts, giving the best performance in concentrations higher than (CA/W = 1).

Abstract:Nanomaterials based on MoS2 are remarkably versatile; MoS2 nanoparticles are proven catalysts for processes such as hydrodesulphurization and the hydrogen evolution reaction, and transition metal dichalcogenides in general have recently emerged as novel 2D components for nanoscale electronics and optoelectronics. The properties of such materials are intimately related to their structure and dimensionality. For example, only the edges exposed by MoS2 nanoparticles (NPs) are catalytically active, and extended MoS2 systems show different character (direct or indirect gap semiconducting, or metallic) depending on their thickness and crystallographic phase. In this work, we show how particle size and interaction with a metal surface affect the stability and properties of different MoS2 NPs and the resulting phase diagrams. By means of calculations based on the Density Functional Theory (DFT), we address how support interactions affect MoS2 nanoparticles of varying size, composition, and structure. We demonstrate that interaction with Au modifies the relative stability of the different nanoparticle types so that edge terminations and crystallographic phases that are metastable for free-standing nanoparticles and monolayers are expressed in the supported system. These support-effects are strongly size-dependent due to the mismatch between Au and MoS2 lattices, which explains experimentally observed transitions in the structural phases for supported MoS2 NPs. Accounting for vdW interactions and the contraction of the Au(111) surface underneath the MoS2 is further found to be necessary for quantitatively reproducing experimental results. This work demonstrates how the properties of nanostructured MoS2 and similar layered systems can be modified by the choice of supporting metal.
XPS Characterization of Carbon Nanotube Supported CoMo Hydrodesulfurization Catalysts

Abstract:In this paper, the effect of catalytic support and sulfiding method on the chemical state of supported Co-Mo catalysts is studied by XPS. After sulfidation with in-situ method, the majority of molybdenum in CNT supported CoMo catalyst is transferred to a species with a formal chemical state Mo(IV) in MoS2 phase, and the rest to Mo(V) which consists of Mo coordinated both to O and S, such as MoO2S22- and MoO32-. In case of CoMo/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst sulfided with in-situ method, a fraction of molybdenum is transferred to formal state Mo(IV) in the form of MoS2, but there is still a mount of unreduced Mo(VI) phase which is difficult to be sulfided. In CoMo/CNT catalytic system sulfided with ex-situ method, Mo(IV) in the form Of MoS2 is detected along with a portion of unreduced Mo(VI) phase, suggesting that not all the Mo phases are reduced and sulfided by ex-situ method. As for CoMo/gamma-Al2O3, a portion of molybdenum is sulfided to intermediate reduced state Mo(V) which consists of Mo coordinated both to O and S, such as MoO2S22- and MoO3S2- in addition, there is still a fraction of unreduced Mo(VI) phase. XPS analyses results suggest that CNT support facilitates the reduction and sulfidation of active species to a large extent, and that alumina support strongly interacts with active species, hereby producing a fraction of phase which resists complete sulfiding. Catalytic measurements of catalysts in the HDS of dibenzothiophene (DBT) show that CoMo/CNT catalysts are of higher HDS activity and selectivity than CoMo/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst, which is in good relation with the sulfiding behavior of the corresponding catalyst.

Abstract:The study of MoS2 crystal growth on distinct substrates by means of kinetic Monte Carlo simulations and varying key parameters such as adsorption rate, the energy barriers for adatom desorption, on‐substrate adatom migration, or edge migration. Provides insights into the potential and limitations of these former processes, offering a theoretical framework for decision‐making in the design and optimization of transition metal dichalcogenides synthesis. Controlling the morphology of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) plays a key role in their applications. Although chemical vapor deposition can achieve wafer‐scale growth of 2D TMDs, a comprehensive theoretical framework for effective growth optimization is lacking. Atomistic modeling methods offer a promising approach to delve into the intricate dynamics underlying the growth. In this study, kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) simulations are employed to identify crucial parameters that govern the morphology of MoS2 flakes grown on diverse substrates. The simulations reveal that large adsorption rates significantly enhance growth speed, which however necessitates rapid edge migration to achieve compact triangles. Substrate etching can tune the adsorption–desorption process of adatoms and enable preferential growth within a specific substrate region, controlling the flake morphology. This study unravels the complex dynamics governing 2D TMD morphology, offering a theoretical framework for decision‐making in the design and optimization of TMD synthesis processes.

Abstract:Understanding and controlling the growth morphology of two-dimensional crystals of transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) is essential in developing high-quality crystalline material for spintronics, valleytronics, electronics, and optics. Here we report our studies on the evolution of crystallite morphology of MoS2 observed in chemical vapor deposition. It is shown that as time goes on, the growth morphology of MoS2 flakes undergoes a transition from a triangle to a star shape, then back to a triangle, and finally to a bulgy irregular morphology. By tuning the temperature of the element sources, the atomic ratio of S and Mo on the growing interface can be adjusted. The variation of the S/Mo ratio affects the edge diffusion length and nucleation behavior on the edge of crystallite, leading to different growth morphologies. Our observations provide clues on how to engineer the morphology and control the quality of TMD crystalline sheets.
