Abstract:Addressing the energy loss of carriers during transmission and achieving high sensitivity detection of target gases facilitates the synthesis of trace-level acetone sensors, which is of great significance in the fields of air quality early warning, health monitoring, and industrial safety monitoring. Here, we propose a strategy where, under hydrothermal conditions, the content of mixed-phase alpha- and beta-Co(OH)2 is regulated by varying the protonation level of 2-methylimidazole in different solutions, leading to the formation of porous monocrystalline Co3O4 microflower structure. The microflower is assembled from ultrathin nanosheets, and the 3D-interconnected macroporous and mesoporous structure provides high surface area and gas diffusion channels. The monocrystalline and two-dimensional structures favor high carrier mobility, enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio. Furthermore, the thickness of the Co3O4 nanosheets is less than twice the Debye length, making their electrical properties completely dependent on surface. DFT calculations also indicate that the few layers Co3O4 model is conducive to acetone adsorption. The Co3O4 sensor exhibits exceptional gas sensing performance towards acetone, with favourable sensitivity (16.83 to 10 ppm), selectivity, and stability, as well as an ultra-low practical detection limit of 10 ppb. Rich point defects and line defects play a significant role in improving the surface activity of the sensitive material as well. This research offers a pathway for designing sensors with exceptional gas sensitivity by employing a straightforward method to control the morphology of sensitive materials, combined with defect engineering to enhance sensing activity.
Ultrasensitive and Exclusive Chemiresistors with a ZIF-67-Derived Oxide Cage/Nanofiber Co3O4/In2O3 Heterostructure for Acetone Detection

Abstract:Gas sensors for acetone detection have received considerable attention because acetone has a significant influence on both the environment and human health, e.g., it is flammable and toxic and may be related to blood glucose levels. However, achieving high sensitivity and selectivity at low concentrations is still a great challenge to date. Here, we report a unique chemiresistive gas sensor for acetone detection, which is composed of In2O3 nanofibers loaded with a porous Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67)-derived Co3O4 cage prepared by simple electrospinning and solvothermal methods. The ZIF-67-derived oxide cage/nanofiber Co3O4/In2O3 heterostructure has abundant reversible active adsorption/reaction sites and a type-I heterojunction, resulting in an ultrasensitive response of 954-50 ppm acetone at 300 °C. In addition, it demonstrates a low detection limit of 18.8 ppb, a fast response time of 4 s, good selectivity and repeatability, acceptable humidity interference, and long-term stability. With such excellent sensing performance to acetone, our chemiresistive gas sensor could be potentially applied for environmental monitoring and early diagnosis of diabetes.

Abstract:Sensitive and selective detection of acetone in human exhaled breath plays an important role in the diagnosis of diabetes. However, obtaining a reliable response to ppb levels of acetone and avoiding cross-sensitivity due to the large amount of moisture in exhaled breath are still great challenges. In this work, a type of acetone sensor with ultrahigh sensitivity and moisture resistance is reported. Electrospun In2O3 nanowires with a controllable Pt core (Pt@In2O3 core-shell nanowires) are designed and prepared as sensitive layers. A mesoporous silica molecular sieve is further integrated as the moisture filter layer. The Pt@In2O3 core-shell nanowire-based sensor exhibits a highly improved response compared with a sensor based on pure In2O3 nanowires due to the probable increase in surface resistance and the introduction of p–n junctions after rational design of the structure. In addition, a good performance in terms of the fast dynamic process, selectivity and long-term stability is also achieved, and the detection limit can be as low as 10 ppb, which is much lower than the concentration level of 1.8 ppm in the exhaled breath of diabetic patients. The influence of the large amount of moisture is greatly weakened by using the molecular sieve as a moisture filter layer, leading to much improved sensitivity in clinical sample detection among healthy and diabetic patients. Based on the optimized composite structure of the Pt@In2O3 core-shell nanowire sensor and moisture filter layer, a simple portable sensing prototype is successfully fabricated. The reported Pt@In2O3 core-shell nanowires and the acetone sensing approach open up a new opportunity for a simple, inexpensive, and noninvasive diagnosis of diabetes.

Abstract:For hazardous gas monitoring and non-invasive diagnosis of diabetes using breath analysis, porous foams assembled by Co3O4 nanoparticles were designed as sensing electrode materials to fabricate efficient yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)-based acetone sensors. The sensitivity of the sensors was improved by varying the sintering temperature to regulate the morphology. Compared to other materials sintered at different temperatures, the porous Co3O4 nanofoams sintered at 800 °C exhibited the highest electrochemical catalytic activity during the electrochemical test. The response of the corresponding Co3O4-based sensor to 10 ppm acetone was -77.2 mV and it exhibited fast response and recovery times. Moreover, the fabricated sensor achieved a low detection limit of 0.05 ppm and a high sensitivity of -56 mV/decade in the acetone concentration range of 1-20 ppm. The sensor also exhibited excellent repeatability, acceptable selectivity, good O2/humidity resistance, and long-term stability during continuous measurements for over 30 days. Moreover, the fabricated sensor was used to determine the acetone concentration in the exhaled breaths of patients with diabetic ketosis. The results indicated that it could distinguish between healthy individuals and patients with diabetic ketosis, thereby proving its abilities to diagnose and monitor diabetic ketosis. Based on its excellent sensitivity and exhaled breath measurement results, the developed sensor has broad application prospects.
Glucose-assisted Synthesis of Hierarchical Flower-Like Co3O4 Nanostructures Assembled by Porous Nanosheets for Enhanced Acetone Sensing

Abstract:Ultrathin Co3O4 nanosheets are excellent candidate materials for high performance chemiresistive gas sensors. However, the restacking and aggregation of nanosheets during sensor fabrication greatly impact the sensing response. In this work, by adding the structure-directing agent of glucose, hierarchical flower-like Co3O4 nanostructures assembled by porous nanosheets were synthesized through hydrothermal method with subsequent calcination treatment to further improve the sensing performance. The fabricated hierarchical flower-like Co3O4 sensor exhibited the highest response of 48.1 toward 100 ppm acetone at 130 degrees C, which was 7.2 times higher than the Co3O4 microplates synthesized without glucose. The excellent long-term stability and selectivity of gas sensors were further validated and the theoretical limit of detection was experimentally calculated to be as low as 200 ppb. Flower-like Co3O4 nanostructures for acetone gas sensor with good performance provide a promising candidate to fabricate high performance gas sensor for safety monitoring and health care.

Abstract:In recent years, clinical studies have found that acetone concentration in exhaled breath can be taken as a characteristic marker of diabetes. Metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) materials are widely used in acetone gas sensors due to their low cost, high sensitivity, fast response/recovery time, and easy integration. This paper reviews recent progress in acetone sensors based on MOS materials for diabetes diagnosis. The methods of improving the performance of acetone sensor have been explored for comparison, especially in high humidity conditions. We summarize the current excellent methods of preparations of sensors based on MOSs and hope to provide some help for the progress of acetone sensors in the diagnosis of diabetes.

Abstract:The hole accumulation layer (HAL) configuration of p-type oxides (including Co3O4) in ambient air causes intrinsically low gas response and hinders their promising applications in exhaled gas analysis. Herein, Sn and Ni co-doping has been proposed to trigger the response of chemiresistive Co3O4 sensor toward acetone (biomarker of diabetes). Via incorporating 1at.% Sn and 0.5at.% Ni doping (Co2.95Sn0.03Ni0.02O4), the response to 100 ppm acetone has been boosted ~2 orders (from 1.24 to 125.6) at 70 °C, the limit of detection (LoD) has been reduced ~4 times (from 47.9 to 12.4 ppb), the optimal operation temperature has been decreased from 130 °C to ~70 °C. Various characterizations suggest that co-doping induced abundant surface asymmetric oxygen vacancy defects (Co-□-Ni, Sn-□-Ni), which facilitate the catalytic oxidation of acetone molecules at relatively low operation temperature. In addition to excellent reproducibility and long-term stability, Co2.95Sn0.03Ni0.02O4 sensor could also operate under highly humid air background and reliably detect acetone concentration in exhaled breath at 150 °C, opening the opportunity for the practical application of p-type oxide sensors for diabetes diagnosis.
Black phosphorus nanosheets-sensitized Zn-doped α-Fe2O3 nanoclusters for trace acetone detection

Abstract:Acetone vapor not only poses a significant threat to the ecological environment and human health but serves as a specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) biomarker within the exhaled breath to distinguish individual diabetes, thereby urgently necessitating a sensitive and selective acetone detection. To this end, conductometric gas sensors featuring black phosphorus nanosheets (BP)-decorated Zn-doped hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoclusters as the sensitive material were prepared. By subtly modulating the componential ratio and operation temperature, the optimal Zn-doped α-Fe2O3/BP sensor delivered a prominent response of 5.32 and short response/recovery times of 8/68 s toward 0.5 ppm acetone at 160 °C as well as a large sensitivity of 5.3/ppm over the concentration range of 0.1–1.5 ppm. Moreover, favorable selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability were demonstrated. The superior sensing performance after incorporating a tiny but moderate amount of BP over Zn-doped α-Fe2O3 sensors could be attributed to the consequent enlarged specific surface area, increased oxygen vacancies, and numerous p-n heterojunctions. Furthermore, additional polylactic acid (PLA) encapsulation membrane endowed the as-prepared sensors with a remarkably improved humidity tolerance, showcasing a huge application potential in non-invasive diabetes diagnosis from exhaled breath featuring high-humidity conditions in the future.

High anti-humidity exhaled acetone sensor based on Co3O4 derived from MOF-74

Abstract:Acetone in human exhaled breath can be used as a biomarker for the early diagnosis of diabetes, because exhaled gas contains a large amount of water and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), improving the selectivity is still a great challenge. In this work, 1D Co3O4 derived from MOF-74 with high moisture resistance and low detection limit was synthesized and used for the detection of acetone markers in human exhaled gas. The 1D porous Co3O4 with different average grain sizes were obtained by precise control of the MOF-74 pyrolysis temperature in a range of 300–450 ℃. The static gas sensitivity test results indicate that the MOF-74-derived Co3O4 at a pyrolysis temperature of 300 ℃ showed the highest response to 50 ppm acetone at an optimal operating temperature of 175 ℃. In the presence of four interfering gases including ethanol, methanol, formaldehyde and ammonia, the prepared Co3O4 sensor showed good selectivity to acetone. In addition, the exhalation simulation tests show that the detection limit of Co3O4 sensor for acetone in exhaled gas is as low as 500 ppb. Moreover, as the relative humidity increases, the initial resistance of the Co3O4 sensor increases, but the response value to 1.8 ppm acetone at 175 ℃ is almost unchanged. The good acetone sensing properties in exhaled gas were attributed to the unique structure of MOF-74 after pyrolysis, which prevented the nanoparticle agglomeration from occurring and provided more exposed active sites. Furthermore, the effective catalytic activity of surface Co2+ in the Co3O4 tetrahedral ligand of the cubic spinel structure enhances the sensing performance of acetone. With the advantages of low detection limit and high anti-humidity, gas sensors based on Co3O4 derived from MOF-74 are expected to become a potential candidate for the detection of acetone in exhaled gas of patients with diabetes in clinical non-invasive testing.

Graphene quantum dot-functionalized three-dimensional ordered mesoporous ZnO for acetone detection toward diagnosis of diabetes

Abstract:The development of a high-performance semiconductor oxide sensor for the accurate detection of trace disease biomarkers in exhaled breath is still a challenge that urgently needs to be addressed. Here, we proposed a self-assembly strategy and spin-coating process to create a graphene quantum dot (GQD)-functionalized three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) ZnO structure. The strong synergistic effect and the p-n heterojunction between the p-type GQDs and n-type ZnO effectively enlarged the resistance variation due to the change in oxygen adsorption. The specific 3DOM structure induced a hierarchical pore size (286 nm in macroscale and 26 nm in mesoscale) and 3D interconnection, which guaranteed high gas accessibility and fast carrier transportation. As a result, the GQD-modified 3DOM ZnO sensor exhibited a remarkably high response (Rair/Rgas = 15.2 for 1 ppm acetone), rapid response/recovery time (9/16 s), extremely low theoretical detection limit (8.7 ppb), and good selectivity towards acetone against other interfering gases. In particular, the proposed sensor could accurately distinguish trace acetone in the simulated breath of diabetic patients. These results demonstrate a high potential for the feasibility of the GQD-modified 3DOM SMO structure as a new sensing material for the possibility of noninvasive real-time diagnosis of diabetes.
High-Performance Conductometric Acetone Gas Sensor Based on Co3O4/ZnO Nanorods with Abundant Oxygen Vacancies

Abstract:Acetone exhibits flammability, explosiveness, and toxicity, rendering it a multifaceted hazard. Moreover, acetone serves as a vital biomarker for diabetes. Consequently, the demand for low-concentration acetone gas detection sensors is increasingly pressing in numerous sectors, including industrial processes and medical applications. In this study, we report a novel sensor based on Co3O4/ZnO nanorods and investigate the influence of Co doping-induced oxygen vacancies and the presence of Co3O4 on the sensing properties. The sensor was prepared through a simple one-step hydrothermal method and named Co/ZnONRs. The morphology, composition, and oxygen vacancy defects of the Co/ZnONRs were characterized using various techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR). Characterization and gas sensing test results have demonstrated that the 1-Co/ZnONRs sensor outperformed previously reported designs, exhibiting high response values, short response times, good selectivity, and low detection limits toward acetone. Specifically, at 250 degree celsius, the sensor demonstrated a response value of 833.33 toward 100-ppm acetone, which is an increase of ten times compared to the response value of ZnONRs, while the optimal operating temperature decreased by 50 degree celsius, and the detection limit was as low as 100 ppb. The improved sensor performance is attributed to several factors such as changes in resistance caused by active sites generated by Co doping ZnO to form oxygen vacancies, the Co3O4/ZnO heterojunction, the high specific surface area of Co/ZnONRs, and the unique catalytic activity of Co3O4. These findings demonstrate the potential of our innovative design to significantly improve the accuracy and efficiency of gas sensors used in industrial processes and medical diagnoses.
Ultrasensitive Exhaled Breath Sensors Based on Anti‐Resonant Hollow Core Fiber with In Situ Grown ZnO‐Bi 2 O 3 Nanosheets

Abstract:Combination of anti‐resonant hollow‐core fiber (HCF) and semiconductor nanomaterial is an effective strategy to obtain high‐performance gas sensors with exceptional sensitivity and low power consumption. However, controlling the semiconductor morphology onto HCF is a major challenge to achieve the desired gas sensor with the enhanced sensitivity. Here, a ZnO‐Bi2O3 nanosheets (NSs) heterostructure is grown in situ on the surface of HCF by sol–gel and hydrothermal methods. ZnO‐Bi2O3 NSs serving as electron acceptors trap electrons after acetone adsorption and then change the refractive index of the surface of HCF. Benefiting from the unique sheet structure and the synergetic effects for multi‐component, the resulting ZnO‐Bi2O3 NSs enabled HCF gas sensor exhibits high sensitivity, selectivity, and repeatability for detecting acetone at room temperature, particularly in the low concentration range, with the theoretical limit of detection down to 140 parts‐per‐billion. Meanwhile, the successful application of the ZnO‐Bi2O3 NSs enabled HCF gas sensor to distinguish the exhaled breath from the healthy individuals and simulated diabetic cases is demonstrated, which paves the way to achieve non‐invasive, ultra‐sensitivity gas sensing at room temperature for the early diagnosis of diabetes.

Abstract:Porous ZnO nanoparticles are prepared by adding glucose show superb selectivity for acetone and the best gas‐sensitive performance for acetone at 120 °C, which is attributed to the excellent pore structure and the presence of carboxyl functional groups on the glucose surface. This study used a hydrothermal approach to create porous ZnO nanoparticles with the help of glucose (Glu), cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). The morphological characterization revealed some small pores on the surface of the samples, all of which were in the 10–20 nm pore size range. The gas test revealed that the Glu‐ZnO material performed best for acetone at 120 °C, with a response value of 82 for 100 ppm, which was approximately ten times for that of pure ZnO (8.6), and the response/recovery time was also twice as short.

Abstract:As a key biomarker for noninvasive diagnosis of diabetes, the selective detection of trace acetone in exhaled gas using a portable and low-cost device remains a great challenge. Semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) based gas sensors have drawn signification attention due to their potential in miniaturization, user-friendliness, high cost-effectiveness and selective real-time detection for noninvasive clinical diagnosis. Herein, we propose a one-pot solvent evaporation induced tricomponent co-assembly strategy to design a novel ordered mesoporous SMO of silica-implanted WO3 (SiO2/WO3) as sensing materials for trace acetone detection. The controlled co-assembly of silicon and tungsten precursors and amphiphilic diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS), and the subsequent thermal treatment enable the local lattice disorder of WO3 induced by the amorphous silica and the formation of ordered mesoporous SiO2/WO3 hybrid walls with a unique metastable epsilon-phase WO3 framework. The obtained mesoporous SiO2/WO3 composites possess highly crystalline framework with large uniform pore size (12.0-13.3 nm), high surface area (99-113 m(2)/g) and pore volume (0.17-0.23 cm(3)/g). Typically, the as-fabricated gas sensor based on mesoporous 2.5 %SiO2/WO3 exhibits rapid response/recovery rate (5/17 s), superior sensitivity (R-air/R-gas = 105 for 50 ppm acetone), as well as high selectivity towards acetone. The limit of detection is as low as 0.25 ppm, which is considerably lower than the thresh value of acetone concentration (>1.1 ppm) in the exhaled breath of diabetic patients, demonstrating its great prospect in real-time monitoring in diabetes diagnosis. Moreover, the mesoporous 2.5 %SiO2/WO3 sensor is integrated into a wireless sensing module connected to a smart phone, providing a convenient real-time detection of acetone.
Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Quantum Dots Activated Dandelion-Like Hierarchical WO3 for Highly Sensitive and Selective MEMS Sensors in Diabetes Detection

Abstract:High sensitivity, low concentration, and excellent selectivity are pronounced primary challenges for semiconductor gas sensors to monitor acetone from exhaled breath. In this study, nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) with high reactivity were used to activate dandelion-like hierarchical tungsten oxide (WO3) microspheres to construct an efficient and stable acetone gas sensor. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of both the abundant active sites provided by the unique dandelion-like hierarchical structure and the high reaction potential generated by the sensitization of the N-CQDs, the resulting 16 wt % N-CQDs/WO3 sensor shows an ultrahigh response value (Ra/Rg = 74@1 ppm acetone), low detection limit (0.05 ppm), outstanding selectivity, and reliable stability to acetone at the optimum working temperature of 210 °C. Noteworthy that the N-CQDs facilitate the carrier migration and intensify the reaction between acetone and WO3 during the sensing process. Considering the above advantages, N-CQDs as a sensitizer to achieve excellent gas-sensitive properties of WO3 are a promising new strategy for achieving accurate acetone detection in real time and facilitating the development of portable human-exhaled gas sensors.
Ultra-small TiO2 nanocubes with highly active (0 0 1) facet for acetone fast detection and diagnosis of diabetes

Abstract:Early and painless detection of type-I diabetic patients by detecting acetone concentration in their exhaled breath would be a rapid and effective means. TiO2 materials with exposed active (001) facet were synthesized mostly with HF as raw material, and the particle size was relatively large. In this work, (001) and (101) facets co-doped TiO2 nanocubes with particle size < 50 nm were successfully prepared by a simple one-step hydrothermal process assisted by the ionic liquid ([Bmim][BF4]) as the fluorine source and morphology modifier. Due to the exposure of the active (001) facets, the sensor exhibited good gas response to acetone gas at a low operating working temperature (OWT) of 170 °C with a detection limit as low as 30 ppb and a response time of only 2.2 s for 100 ppm acetone gas, and also relatively excellent selectivity, reproducibility, moisture resistance and long-term stability. It is worthy to point that, the changes of acetone concentration were compared in exhaled gas from healthy people and type-I diabetic patients, and the responses to exhaled gas of type-I diabetic patients were also tracked at different time in the same day. This provides significant convenience for early and painless diagnosis of type-I diabetic patients.

Abstract:A single SMO limits the adsorption of gas, resulting in poor performance of the gas sensor. Herein, two-dimensional (2D) graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) were modified on ZnFe2O4 microspheres as efficient gas sensing materials via hydrothermal route. The modification of g-C3N4 can alter the energy band structure of ZnFe2O4, resulting in an increase in the bandgap, thus, effectively optimizing the carrier concentration in ZnFe2O4 and elevating the baseline resistance of ZnFe2O4/g-C3N4 microspheres. The sensor based on ZnFe2O4/g-C3N4-20 microspheres (mass ratio of ZnFe2O4: g-C3N4 =10:2) had a higher response value (53.3) which was 3.4 times higher than that of ZnFe2O4, better selectivity and rapid response/recovery speeds towards 100 ppm acetone, as well as a low detection limit of 255 ppb. The enhanced performance of ZnFe2O4/g-C3N4 microsphere could be ascribed to the catalysis of C3N4, regulating the energy structure, and heterojunction formation between ZnFe2O4 and g-C3N4. Thus, this work demonstrated their promising applications in various fields.

Abstract:This work proposed a one-step method to fabricate the two-dimensional (2D) heterostructural C3N4-tin oxide (SnO2) nanocomposites with excellent acetone vapor sensing performance. A facile calcination treatment of melamine and SnCl2 center dot 2H(2)O without further processing can obtain the expected C3N4-SnO2 sensor. Specially, the SnO2 nanoparticles directly anchor onto C3N4 layer to construct a heterostructure, giving enhanced sensing properties. Compared with pure SnO2 the heterostructural C3N4-SnO2 Exhibits 22 times enhancement of sensing sensitivity as well as fast response/recovery (7 s/8 s). The limit of detection (LOD) of acetone can be as low as 67 ppb, which is far below the concentration in exhaled breath of a diabetic and predicts a possible for diagnosis of diabetes. Such enhancement can be interpreted as the transformation of electrons from SnO2 to C3N4 layer to form an asymmetric electronic structure in the electron depletion layer of SnO2, for which few electrons can change its resistance significantly. Moreover, the large surface area of C3N4 layer provide vast adsorption sites for target gases. Importantly, SnO2 and C3N4 are low-cost, easy fabrication and eco-friendly materials, and the synthesis strategy presented here is simple, repeatable and operable, thus can be extended to build other-type metal oxides-based nanocomposites for various applications. Detection of Acetone as a Gas Biomarker for Diabetes Based on Gas Sensor Technology

Abstract:With the continuous development and improvement of medical services, there is a growing demand for improving diabetes diagnosis. Exhaled breath analysis, characterized by its speed, convenience, and non-invasive nature, is leading the trend in diagnostic development. Studies have shown that the acetone levels in the breath of diabetes patients are higher than normal, making acetone a basis for diabetes breath analysis. This provides a more readily accepted method for early diabetes prevention and monitoring. Addressing issues such as the invasive nature, disease transmission risks, and complexity of diabetes testing, this study aims to design a diabetes gas biomarker acetone detection system centered around a sensor array using gas sensors and pattern recognition algorithms. The research covers sensor selection, sensor preparation, circuit design, data acquisition and processing, and detection model establishment to accurately identify acetone. Titanium dioxide was chosen as the nano gas-sensitive material to prepare the acetone gas sensor, with data collection conducted using STM32. Filtering was applied to process the raw sensor data, followed by feature extraction using principal component analysis. A recognition model based on support vector machine algorithm was used for qualitative identification of gas samples, while a recognition model based on backpropagation neural network was employed for quantitative detection of gas sample concentrations. Experimental results demonstrated recognition accuracies of 96% and 97.5% for acetone-ethanol and acetone-methanol mixed gases, and 90% for ternary acetone, ethanol, and methanol mixed gases.
