Abstract:Sensitive and selective detection of acetone in human exhaled breath plays an important role in the diagnosis of diabetes. However, obtaining a reliable response to ppb levels of acetone and avoiding cross-sensitivity due to the large amount of moisture in exhaled breath are still great challenges. In this work, a type of acetone sensor with ultrahigh sensitivity and moisture resistance is reported. Electrospun In2O3 nanowires with a controllable Pt core (Pt@In2O3 core-shell nanowires) are designed and prepared as sensitive layers. A mesoporous silica molecular sieve is further integrated as the moisture filter layer. The Pt@In2O3 core-shell nanowire-based sensor exhibits a highly improved response compared with a sensor based on pure In2O3 nanowires due to the probable increase in surface resistance and the introduction of p–n junctions after rational design of the structure. In addition, a good performance in terms of the fast dynamic process, selectivity and long-term stability is also achieved, and the detection limit can be as low as 10 ppb, which is much lower than the concentration level of 1.8 ppm in the exhaled breath of diabetic patients. The influence of the large amount of moisture is greatly weakened by using the molecular sieve as a moisture filter layer, leading to much improved sensitivity in clinical sample detection among healthy and diabetic patients. Based on the optimized composite structure of the Pt@In2O3 core-shell nanowire sensor and moisture filter layer, a simple portable sensing prototype is successfully fabricated. The reported Pt@In2O3 core-shell nanowires and the acetone sensing approach open up a new opportunity for a simple, inexpensive, and noninvasive diagnosis of diabetes.

Abstract:As a key biomarker for noninvasive diagnosis of diabetes, the selective detection of trace acetone in exhaled gas using a portable and low-cost device remains a great challenge. Semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) based gas sensors have drawn signification attention due to their potential in miniaturization, user-friendliness, high cost-effectiveness and selective real-time detection for noninvasive clinical diagnosis. Herein, we propose a one-pot solvent evaporation induced tricomponent co-assembly strategy to design a novel ordered mesoporous SMO of silica-implanted WO3 (SiO2/WO3) as sensing materials for trace acetone detection. The controlled co-assembly of silicon and tungsten precursors and amphiphilic diblock copolymer poly(ethylene oxide)-block-polystyrene (PEO-b-PS), and the subsequent thermal treatment enable the local lattice disorder of WO3 induced by the amorphous silica and the formation of ordered mesoporous SiO2/WO3 hybrid walls with a unique metastable epsilon-phase WO3 framework. The obtained mesoporous SiO2/WO3 composites possess highly crystalline framework with large uniform pore size (12.0-13.3 nm), high surface area (99-113 m(2)/g) and pore volume (0.17-0.23 cm(3)/g). Typically, the as-fabricated gas sensor based on mesoporous 2.5 %SiO2/WO3 exhibits rapid response/recovery rate (5/17 s), superior sensitivity (R-air/R-gas = 105 for 50 ppm acetone), as well as high selectivity towards acetone. The limit of detection is as low as 0.25 ppm, which is considerably lower than the thresh value of acetone concentration (>1.1 ppm) in the exhaled breath of diabetic patients, demonstrating its great prospect in real-time monitoring in diabetes diagnosis. Moreover, the mesoporous 2.5 %SiO2/WO3 sensor is integrated into a wireless sensing module connected to a smart phone, providing a convenient real-time detection of acetone.

Abstract:Acetone in human exhaled breath can be used as a biomarker for the early diagnosis of diabetes, because exhaled gas contains a large amount of water and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs), improving the selectivity is still a great challenge. In this work, 1D Co3O4 derived from MOF-74 with high moisture resistance and low detection limit was synthesized and used for the detection of acetone markers in human exhaled gas. The 1D porous Co3O4 with different average grain sizes were obtained by precise control of the MOF-74 pyrolysis temperature in a range of 300–450 ℃. The static gas sensitivity test results indicate that the MOF-74-derived Co3O4 at a pyrolysis temperature of 300 ℃ showed the highest response to 50 ppm acetone at an optimal operating temperature of 175 ℃. In the presence of four interfering gases including ethanol, methanol, formaldehyde and ammonia, the prepared Co3O4 sensor showed good selectivity to acetone. In addition, the exhalation simulation tests show that the detection limit of Co3O4 sensor for acetone in exhaled gas is as low as 500 ppb. Moreover, as the relative humidity increases, the initial resistance of the Co3O4 sensor increases, but the response value to 1.8 ppm acetone at 175 ℃ is almost unchanged. The good acetone sensing properties in exhaled gas were attributed to the unique structure of MOF-74 after pyrolysis, which prevented the nanoparticle agglomeration from occurring and provided more exposed active sites. Furthermore, the effective catalytic activity of surface Co2+ in the Co3O4 tetrahedral ligand of the cubic spinel structure enhances the sensing performance of acetone. With the advantages of low detection limit and high anti-humidity, gas sensors based on Co3O4 derived from MOF-74 are expected to become a potential candidate for the detection of acetone in exhaled gas of patients with diabetes in clinical non-invasive testing.

Abstract:<p>The concentration of acetone in exhaled breath is an efficient indicator for the diagnosis of diabetes. However, it is difficult to detect acetone in exhaled breath due to the extremely low acetone concentration, rather complex composition and very high humidity. Herein, we report Pt-decorated foam-like Ga-In bimetal oxide nanofibers (Pt-GIO) for trace concentration acetone detection. We found that the Pt-GIO based sensor exhibits enhanced sensing response towards acetone compared with that of Ga-In bimetal oxide (GIO), due to the formation of Schottky contact between Pt and n-type GIO, leading to the increased chemisorbed oxygen. As a result, the Pt-GIO based sensors gives a high response (3.2), short response time (13 s) to 1.8 ppm acetone and very low detection limit (300 ppb). The Pt-GIO sensor also gives good stability and is nearly insensitive to moisture in the range of 40% RH to 95%. These advantages including high response, low detection limit, short response time and high moisture resistance endow Pt-GIO a promising sensing material for acetone detection in exhaled breath.</p>

Abstract:The development of a high-performance semiconductor oxide sensor for the accurate detection of trace disease biomarkers in exhaled breath is still a challenge that urgently needs to be addressed. Here, we proposed a self-assembly strategy and spin-coating process to create a graphene quantum dot (GQD)-functionalized three-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) ZnO structure. The strong synergistic effect and the p-n heterojunction between the p-type GQDs and n-type ZnO effectively enlarged the resistance variation due to the change in oxygen adsorption. The specific 3DOM structure induced a hierarchical pore size (286 nm in macroscale and 26 nm in mesoscale) and 3D interconnection, which guaranteed high gas accessibility and fast carrier transportation. As a result, the GQD-modified 3DOM ZnO sensor exhibited a remarkably high response (Rair/Rgas = 15.2 for 1 ppm acetone), rapid response/recovery time (9/16 s), extremely low theoretical detection limit (8.7 ppb), and good selectivity towards acetone against other interfering gases. In particular, the proposed sensor could accurately distinguish trace acetone in the simulated breath of diabetic patients. These results demonstrate a high potential for the feasibility of the GQD-modified 3DOM SMO structure as a new sensing material for the possibility of noninvasive real-time diagnosis of diabetes.

Abstract:Apoptosis, described by Kerr[1] in 1972, plays a key role in all types of regulated cellular processes in multicellular organisms. It is defined as a morphologic change, including fragmentation of the DNA, cell shrinkage, dilation of the endoplasmatic reticulum, cell fragmentation and formation of apoptotic bodies[2,3]. One of the abilities of apoptotic cell is to trigger its own engulfment by phagocytic cells prior to cell lysis, which is crucial to the avoidance of the tissue damage and inflammation associated with necrosis[4]. Apoptotic cells lose membrane phospholipid asymmetry and expose phosphatidylserine (PS) on the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane, macrophages then phagocytose apoptotic cells after specific recognition of the exposed PS[5]. Annexin V (AV), having a high affinity for PS in the presence of Ca2+ ions[6] and inhibition to PS-dependent procoagulant reactions[7], is proved to be a very useful general probe for early apoptosis-associated membrane change on live cells before the nuclear condensation events and fragmentation of the DNA[8]. Gastric carcinoma is estimated to be one of the most frequent cancers in the world. According to Lanren’s classification[9], gastric carcinoma can be divided into adenocarcinomas of diffuse and intestinal type, which differ in growth pattern, morphology, and some phenotypic markers. Recently, apoptotic index and apoptotic genes have been found different in both types[10,11]. In this study, we investigated the quantitations of early apoptosis in both intestinal and diffuse gastric carcinoma and their adjacent non-neoplastic tissues with regard to classification and differentiation, and whether the exposure of PS could be inhibited by Bcl-2 protein through various pathways.

Abstract:Sensitive and selective acetone detection is of great significance in the fields of environmental protection, industrial production, and individual health monitoring from exhaled breath. To achieve this goal, bimetallic Au@Pt core-shell nanospheres (BNSs) functionalized-electrospun ZnFe2O4 nanofibers (ZFO NFs) are prepared in this work. Compared to pure NFs-650 analogue, the ZFO NFs/BNSs-2 sensor exhibits a stronger mean response (3.32 vs 1.84), quicker response/recovery speeds (33 s/28 s vs 54 s/42 s), and lower operating temperature (188 vs 273 degrees C) toward 0.5 ppm acetone. Note that an experimental detection limit of 30 ppb is achieved, which ranks among the best cases reported thus far. Besides the demonstrated excellent repeatability, humidity-enhanced response, and long-term stability, the selectivity toward acetone is remarkably improved after BNSs functionalization. Through material characterizations and DFT calculations, all these improvements could be attributed to the boosted oxygen vacancies and abundant Schottky junctions between ZFO NFs and BNSs, and the synergistic catalytic effect of BNSs. This work offers an alternative strategy to realize selective subppm acetone under high-humidity conditions catering for the future requirements of noninvasive breath diabetes diagnosis in the field of individual healthcare.

Abstract:Diabetes mellitus (DM), an ailment caused by unregulated blood sugar levels, can lead to the failure of more than one organ in patients. Currently, blood tests are being conducted in scientific trials to analyse and track blood sugar and ketone levels. In this method, a drop of blood from a pricked finger is placed on a sensitive strip area, which is then pre-inserted into an electronic device to be analysed. However, this method is painful, invasive, and costly, which can be unsafe if not handled properly. Human breath analysis is a rapid and non-invasive approach for detecting different volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which could be indicators of various illnesses. In patients with DM, the body produces excessive amounts of ketones together with acetoacetate, β-hydroxybutyrate (BOHB), and acetone. Acetone is exhaled in the breath. It is produced when the body metabolizes fat, instead of glucose, for energy. Conventional exhalation analysis techniques are based entirely on spectrometric strategies; however, they are becoming increasingly appealing from a clinical point of view with the advancement of gas sensors. This study describes modern-day improvements to semiconductor metal oxide (SMO) gas sensors for the detection of exhaled acetone. Since 2011, all the sensor materials have been used to detect low concentrations of acetone gas (0.1 ppm–20 ppm). Several parameters that affect the performance of the sensor device are mentioned in detail, including the composite materials, morphology, doping, temperature, humidity, acetone concentration, and stability of the sensor. Finally, the applicability of the sensor is discussed.

Abstract:Gas sensors for acetone detection have received considerable attention because acetone has a significant influence on both the environment and human health, e.g., it is flammable and toxic and may be related to blood glucose levels. However, achieving high sensitivity and selectivity at low concentrations is still a great challenge to date. Here, we report a unique chemiresistive gas sensor for acetone detection, which is composed of In2O3 nanofibers loaded with a porous Co-based zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67)-derived Co3O4 cage prepared by simple electrospinning and solvothermal methods. The ZIF-67-derived oxide cage/nanofiber Co3O4/In2O3 heterostructure has abundant reversible active adsorption/reaction sites and a type-I heterojunction, resulting in an ultrasensitive response of 954-50 ppm acetone at 300 °C. In addition, it demonstrates a low detection limit of 18.8 ppb, a fast response time of 4 s, good selectivity and repeatability, acceptable humidity interference, and long-term stability. With such excellent sensing performance to acetone, our chemiresistive gas sensor could be potentially applied for environmental monitoring and early diagnosis of diabetes.

Abstract:With the continuous development and improvement of medical services, there is a growing demand for improving diabetes diagnosis. Exhaled breath analysis, characterized by its speed, convenience, and non-invasive nature, is leading the trend in diagnostic development. Studies have shown that the acetone levels in the breath of diabetes patients are higher than normal, making acetone a basis for diabetes breath analysis. This provides a more readily accepted method for early diabetes prevention and monitoring. Addressing issues such as the invasive nature, disease transmission risks, and complexity of diabetes testing, this study aims to design a diabetes gas biomarker acetone detection system centered around a sensor array using gas sensors and pattern recognition algorithms. The research covers sensor selection, sensor preparation, circuit design, data acquisition and processing, and detection model establishment to accurately identify acetone. Titanium dioxide was chosen as the nano gas-sensitive material to prepare the acetone gas sensor, with data collection conducted using STM32. Filtering was applied to process the raw sensor data, followed by feature extraction using principal component analysis. A recognition model based on support vector machine algorithm was used for qualitative identification of gas samples, while a recognition model based on backpropagation neural network was employed for quantitative detection of gas sample concentrations. Experimental results demonstrated recognition accuracies of 96% and 97.5% for acetone-ethanol and acetone-methanol mixed gases, and 90% for ternary acetone, ethanol, and methanol mixed gases.

Abstract:Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening acute complication of diabetes in which ketone bodies accumulate in the blood. Breath acetone (a ketone) directly correlates with blood ketones, such that breath acetone monitoring could be used to improve safety in diabetes care. In this work, we report the design and fabrication of a chitosan/Pt/InP nanowire array based chemiresistive acetone sensor. By implementing chitosan as a surface functionalization layer and a Pt Schottky contact for efficient charge transfer processes and photovoltaic effect, self-powered, highly selective acetone sensing has been achieved. This sensor has an ultra-wide detection range from sub-ppb to >100,000 ppm levels at room temperature, incorporating the range from healthy individuals (300-800 ppb) to those at high-risk of DKA (> 75 ppm). The nanowire sensor has been further integrated into a handheld breath testing prototype, the Ketowhistle, which can successfully detect different ranges of acetone concentrations in simulated breath. The Ketowhistle demonstrates immediate potential for non-invasive ketone testing and monitoring for persons living with diabetes, in particular for DKA prevention.

Bimetallic PtAu-Decorated SnO2 Nanospheres Exhibiting Enhanced Gas Sensitivity for Ppb-Level Acetone Detection

Abstract:Acetone is a biomarker found in the expired air of patients suffering from diabetes. Therefore, early and accurate detection of its concentration in the breath of such patients is extremely important. We prepared Tin(IV) oxide (SnO2) nanospheres via hydrothermal treatment and then decorated them with bimetallic PtAu nanoparticles (NPs) employing the approach of in situ reduction. The topology, elemental composition, as well as crystal structure of the prepared materials were studied via field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The findings revealed that bimetallic PtAu-decorated SnO2 nanospheres (PtAu/SnO2) were effectively synthesized as well as PtAu NPs evenly deposited onto the surface of the SnO2 nanospheres. Pure SnO2 nanospheres and PtAu/SnO2 sensors were prepared, and their acetone gas sensitivity was explored. The findings demonstrated that in comparison to pristine SnO2 nanosphere sensors, the sensors based on PtAu/SnO2 displayed superior sensitivity to acetone of 0.166–100 ppm at 300 °C, providing a low theoretical limit of detection equal to 158 ppm. Moreover, the PtAu/SnO2 sensors showed excellent gas response (Ra/Rg= 492.3 to 100 ppm), along with fast response and recovery (14 s/13 s to 10 ppm), good linearity of correlation, excellent repeatability, long-term stability, and satisfactory selectivity at 300 °C. This improved gas sensitivity was because of the electron sensitization of the Pt NPs, the chemical sensitization of the Au NPs, as well as the synergistic effects of bimetallic PtAu. The PtAu/SnO2 sensors have considerable potential for the early diagnosis and screening of diabetes.
Black phosphorus nanosheets-sensitized Zn-doped α-Fe2O3 nanoclusters for trace acetone detection

Abstract:Acetone vapor not only poses a significant threat to the ecological environment and human health but serves as a specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) biomarker within the exhaled breath to distinguish individual diabetes, thereby urgently necessitating a sensitive and selective acetone detection. To this end, conductometric gas sensors featuring black phosphorus nanosheets (BP)-decorated Zn-doped hematite (α-Fe2O3) nanoclusters as the sensitive material were prepared. By subtly modulating the componential ratio and operation temperature, the optimal Zn-doped α-Fe2O3/BP sensor delivered a prominent response of 5.32 and short response/recovery times of 8/68 s toward 0.5 ppm acetone at 160 °C as well as a large sensitivity of 5.3/ppm over the concentration range of 0.1–1.5 ppm. Moreover, favorable selectivity, repeatability, and long-term stability were demonstrated. The superior sensing performance after incorporating a tiny but moderate amount of BP over Zn-doped α-Fe2O3 sensors could be attributed to the consequent enlarged specific surface area, increased oxygen vacancies, and numerous p-n heterojunctions. Furthermore, additional polylactic acid (PLA) encapsulation membrane endowed the as-prepared sensors with a remarkably improved humidity tolerance, showcasing a huge application potential in non-invasive diabetes diagnosis from exhaled breath featuring high-humidity conditions in the future.

Abstract:Multi-shelled hollow structures have been drawing wide attention in various fields because of their large surface area, short diffusion path and less agglomerated configuration. Herein, ZnSnO3 hollow microspheres with controllable shell numbers have been prepared by a facile solvothermal reaction and following annealing treatment. The test results show that multi-shelled ZnSnO3 hollow microspheres exhibit excellent acetone sensing performance, which is superior than that of double-shelled samples. In particular, multi-shelled ZnSnO3 hollow microspheres not only show high responses of 105.1 and rapid response/recovery speed (1/18 s) to 100 ppm acetone, but also exhibit good repeatability, long-term stability and anti-humidity properties. Furthermore, they can easily distinguish healthy breath from simulated diabetic breath. And they still show rapid response/recovery speed in actual breath detection, which is beneficial to the achievement of real-time detection. The enhanced sensing performance has been studied systematically. Thus, multi-shelled ZnSnO3 hollow microspheres have a great potential for the diagnosis of diabetes.

Abstract:A novel synergy of boron doping and chemical reduction to boost the catalytic activity of Co3O4 is proposed. The fabricated sensor exhibits excellent performances to acetone. A new sensing mechanism based on synergy of oxygen adsorption mechanism and catalytic reaction mechanism is proposed. Optimally increasing the catalytic activity of Co3O4‐based materials is crucial for promoting their practical applications for acetone detection; however, this still remains challenging. Herein, a strategy is proposed in this work to increase the catalytic activity of Co3O4 toward the oxidation of acetone through the synergistic effect of boron doping and chemical reduction, which can substantially improve the sensing performance for acetone detection. The characterization results confirm that the present strategy facilitates the formation of more oxygen vacancies and increases the content of Co2+ ions serving as active sites. As expected, the optimal sensor yields a higher response . To extend the practical application to the auxiliary diagnosis of diabetes through exhaled breath, the optimal sensors distinguished between acetone concentrations in the breath of healthy individuals and in the simulated breath of patients with diabetes. Detailed gas‐sensing measurements reveal that the enhanced acetone sensing performance is attributed to the increased catalytic activity of materials for oxidation of acetone by the Mars–van Krevelen, Langmuir–Hinshelwood, and Eley–Rideal mechanisms. This study provides new insights into the fabrication of high‐performance metal oxide‐based gas sensors by improving the catalytic activity of sensing materials.

Abstract:The trace acetone determination in breath can be regarded as a noninvasive method for diagnostic of diabetes. There is an urgent demand to develop a simple method for acetone detection which can be easily performed at home. Here, UiO-66-NH 2 @PEI with the appropriate aperture size combined with the hand-held sensor was used to construct the adsorption–desorption sensing platform for separation and enrichment of acetone in exhaled breath (EB). UiO-66-NH 2 @PEI can realize the selective adsorption, desorption and separation for acetone in EB. The flameless combustion hand-held sensor can sensitively respond to acetone in the range of 0.2–12.0 ppm and it can achieve the accurate determination of acetone content in EB of diabetic patients. The hand-held sensor is inexpensive, lightweight and easy to operate, which has great application prospects for the widespread use for diabetic patients in family life.

Abstract:The state-of-the-art diabetes diagnosis is concerned with developing non-invasive nano-enabled exhaled breath-acetone detection strategies. Here, we detail the potential of polypyrrole(PPy)– Silver/silver chloride (Ag/AgCl) ternary nanocomposites (NCs) for monitoring low-trace of acetone in human breath for diabetes diagnosis. The PPy–Ag/AgCl NCs were synthesized through in-situ chemical oxidative polymerization of aniline by silver nitrate in the presence of hydrochloric acid. The morphological analysis revealed the existence of spherical Ag/AgCl nanoparticles (~50 nm diameter) embedded in PPy matrix of nano fibrillar morphology (~20 nm diameter). The structural investigations confirm the co-existence of PPy, Ag and AgCl nanoparticles in the ternary nanocomposite. The NC exhibited manifold superior sensing performance towards low trace (as low as ~1 ppm) of breath-acetone with excellent sensitivity (~ 20%), prompt response (~20s), fast recovery (~100s), linear detecting range, and high repeatability at room temperature compared to pristine PPy. It is attributed to synergistic effects in ternary NC due to physicochemical merits of all precursors. Moreover, it showed high stability and selectivity towards acetone in the presence of prominent interfering VOCs and varying humidity. It opens a new window for non-invasive, economic, energy-efficient and point-of-care sensors for diagnosing diabetes in humans and, revolutionizing clinical diagnostics and personal healthcare.
