Abstract:Cascade transitions of rare earth ions involved in infrared host fiber provide the potential to generate dual or multiple wavelength lasing at mid-infrared region. In addition, the fast development of saturable absorber (SA) towards the long wavelengths motivates the realization of passively switched mid-infrared pulsed lasers. In this work, by combing the above two techniques, a new phenomenon of passively Q-switched ~3 μm and gain-switched ~2 μm pulses in a shared cavity was demonstrated with a Ho3+-doped fluoride fiber and a specifically designed semiconductor saturable absorber (SESAM) as the SA. The repetition rate of ~2 μm pulses can be tuned between half and same as that of ~3 μm pulses by changing the pump power. The proposed method here will add new capabilities and more flexibility for generating mid-infrared multiple wavelength pulses simultaneously that has important potential applications for laser surgery, material processing, laser radar and free-space communications and other areas.

Abstract:A tunable actively Q-switched cascade Ho3+-doped fluoride fiber laser operating in the mid-infrared region is demonstrated. Using a planar diffraction grating in the Littrow configuration for tuning, stable pulse trains from the I-5(6) -> I-5(7) transition were observed over a 80 nm tuning range from 2.95 to 3.031 mu m with a bandwidth of similar to 1 nm. Gain-switched pulse trains from the I-5(7) -> I-5(8) transition at 2.074 mu m induced by the I-5(6) -> I-5(7) Q-switched pulses were also produced over the entire tuning range. At maximum pump power and at an acousto-optic modulator repetition rate of 40 kHz, > 15 mu J pulse energy and 300-410 ns duration pulses were obtained from 2.97 mu m to 3.015 mu m, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first tunable Q-switched pulsed fiber laser operating in the mid-infrared region.

Abstract:A diode-cladding-pumped mid-infrared passively Q-switched Ho3+-doped fluoride fiber laser using a reverse designed broad band semiconductor saturable mirror (SESAM) was demonstrated. Nonlinear reflectivity of the SESAM was measured using an in-house Yb3+-doped mode-locked fiber laser at 1062 nm. Stable pulse train was produced at a slope efficient of 12.1% with respect to the launched pump power. Maximum pulse energy of 6.65 mu J with a pulse width of 1.68 mu s and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of similar to 50 dB was achieved at a repetition rate of 47.6 kHz and center wavelength of 2.971 mu m. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first 3 mu m region SESAM-based Q-switched fiber laser with the highest average power and pulse energy, as well as the longest wavelength from mid-infrared passively Q-switched fluoride fiber lasers.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate a passively Q-switched Ho3+/Pr3+ co-doped fluoride fiber laser centered at 2865.7 nm using a tungsten disulfide (WS2) saturable absorber (SA) for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. A multilayer WS2 film was fabricated using the sulfidation grown method and then transferred onto an Au mirror to act as the cavity feedback and SA device in a linear cavity. Under a launched pump power of 318.5 mW, stable Q-switched pulses with an average output power of 48.4 mW were achieved with a pulse duration of 1.73 mu s and repetition rate of 131.6 kHz, resulting in a pulse energy of 0.37 mu J. Our experimental results confirm that WS2 can be an effective nonlinear modulator that is suitable for pulse generation at the 3 mu m waveband.

Abstract:Mid-infrared pulsed fiber laser with centered wavelength from 2 to 5 μm have attracted substantial attention owing to their potential applications in defence, laser microsurgery, material processing, nonlinear frequency conversion, etc. We demonstrated our recent achievements at 3 μm pulsed fiber lasers by utilizing Q-switching method. Firstly, a cascaded dual wavelength actively Q-switched Ho3+-doped ZBLAN fiber was reported by inserting an external electrically driven acoustic-optical modulator (AOM) into the cavity. The 3.0 μm and 2.07 μm pulse trains were achieved with a μs level time delay corresponding to the pulse energy of 29 μJ and 7 μJ, pulse duration of 380 ns and 260 ns, respectively. The narrower pulse width in this case compared to that in passively Q-switched fiber lasers can be attributed to the much higher modulation depth of AOM. Using a reversely designed semiconductor saturable mirror (SESAM) as the saturable absorber (SA), we presented a passively Q-switched Ho3+-doped ZBLAN fiber laser operating at ~2971 nm, the obtained maximum pulse energy of 6.65 μJ only limited by the maximum pump power was also the highest level from passively Q-switched fiber lasers at this wavelength range, and corresponding pulse repetition rate and duration were 47.6 kHz and 1.68 μs, respectively. Then using a Fe2+: ZnSe crystal with an initial transmission of 69 % as the SA, a passively Q-switched Ho3+-doped ZBLAN fiber laser operating at 2970.3 nm was also achieved. The obtained pulse duration and repetition rate were 1.92 μs and 62.74 kHz, respectively with an output power of 266 mW and a pulse energy of 4.24 μJ. The further performance improvements were possible because they were just limited by the maximum pump power. To sum up, the above achievements would be beneficial for further development of mid-infrared pulsed fiber lasers.

Abstract:We report a tunable passively Q-switched Ho(3+)-doped ZBLAN fiber laser at 3 μm waveband using a Fe(2+):ZnSe crystal as saturable absorber (SA) and a plane ruled grating in Littrow configuration as wavelength tuning element. Stable pulse trains with ~85 nm tuning range from 2919.1 nm to 3004.2 nm and spectrum bandwidths of ~1 nm were achieved for the Fe(2+):ZnSe crystal with an initial transmission (IT) of 69%. Pulse duration increased from 1.23 μs to 2.35 μs and repetition rate decreased from 96.1 kHz to 43.56 kHz with the extension towards long wavelength direction. With the IT increasing to 79% and then 89%, though the available tuning range was slightly shortened, higher output power, pulse energy and slope efficiency were obtained with the slightly increased pulse duration and repetition rate. Maximum output power of 337 mW at a slope efficiency of 11.44% and pulse energy of 5.64 μJ were achieved at ~2970 nm and ~2991 nm, respectively. High signal noise ratio (SNR) of over 50 dB across the whole tuning range for the three ITs Fe(2+):ZnSe crystals indicated the stable Q-switching. To our knowledge, this is the first reported wavelength tunable passively Q-switched ZBLAN fiber laser.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a broadly wavelength-tunable mode-locked Ho3+/Pr3+-codoped ZBLAN fiber laser operating in the 3 μm mid-infrared spectral region based on a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror. Wavelength selection is realized by rotating a plane ruled grating. The fiber laser exhibits stable continuous-wave mode-locking operation over a wide wavelength tuning range of 34 nm (2842.2 nm~2876.2 nm), with a 10.17 MHz repetition rate and 22 ps pulse duration. Stable mode-locked pulses can be maintained until the launched pump power of 1.25 W. Maximum average output power of 127.7 mW and the corresponding pulse energy of 12.56 nJ are achieved. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a wavelength-tunable mode-locked fiber laser operating in the 3 μm spectral region. Such simple, robust, and versatile mid-infrared picosecond laser source can find various applications in laser surgery, spectroscopy, and nonlinear frequency conversion.

Abstract:Enormous performance gains have been made in fluoride-based fiber lasers operating around 3 μm due to advances in fiber fabrication and improvements in high-power pump diode technologies during the last decade. Pulsed fluoride fiber lasers capable of producing high-energy/high-peak power mid-infrared pulses are of significant interest for a variety of applications. Q-switched and mode-locked fiber lasers have been demonstrated with various techniques in recent years. In this paper, pulsed Er3+- and Ho3+-doped ZBLAN (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF) fiber lasers are reviewed, and our achievement of pulsed fiber laser sources at 3 μm is presented. Power/energy scaling of pulsed ZBLAN fiber lasers and their potential applications are discussed.

Abstract:By adopting a InAs based semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM), we have demonstrated a 3.46 μm passively Q-switched Er3+:ZBLAN fiber laser. An amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) seeded 1973 nm pump source is introduced to enhance the temporal stability. Stable 3.46 μm Q-switched pulse trains are obtained with a maximum repetition rate of 58.71 kHz and corresponding pulse width of 2.47 μs. The maximum average output power and single pulse energy are 63 mW and 1.4 μJ, respectively. The pulse characteristics with respect to the two pump powers are also evaluated. The results prove that the commercial SESAMs in stock have the capacity to extend the operation wavelength to the mid-infrared (mid-IR) wavelength region beyond 3.0 μm.

Abstract:We present the first widely tunable passively Q-switched Dy3+-doped ZBLAN fiber laser around 3 mu m pumped at 1.1 mu m using PbS nanoparticles as the saturable absorber (SA) to our knowledge. At 2.87 mu m, the modulation depth and saturation intensity of the SA were measured to be 12.5% and 1.10 MW/cm(2), respectively. Stable Q-switching was achieved over a wavelength range of 2.71-3.08 mu m (similar to 370 nm), which is a record tuning range from a pulsed rare-earth-doped fiber laser, to our knowledge. A maximum output power of 252.7 mW was obtained, with a pulse energy of 1.51 mu J, a pulse width of 795 ns, and a repetition rate of 166.8 kHz. This demonstration implies that Dy3+ is a promising gain medium for tunable pulsed sources in the 3 mu m band and shows for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, the potential of PbS as a mid-infrared SA. Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a widely tunable passively Q-switched Ho3+/Pr3+-codoped ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF fiber laser operating in the 2.8 μm mid-infrared (MIR) waveband based on a single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) saturable absorber (SA). The SWCNTs have diameters ranging from 1.4 to 1.7 nm. The modulation depth and saturation intensity of the SWCNT SA measured at 2850 nm are 16.5% and 1.66 MW/cm2, respectively. Stable Q-switched pulses with the shortest pulse duration of 1.46 μs and the maximum pulse energy of 0.43 μJ are achieved at a launched pump power of 445.6 mW. The combined use of a broadband SWCNT SA and a plane ruled grating ensures a broad continuously tuning range of 55.0 nm from 2837.6 to 2892.6 nm. The output powers, emission spectra, repetition rates, and pulse durations at different tuning wavelengths are also characterized and analyzed. Our results indicate that SWCNTs can be excellent broadband SAs in the 3 μm MIR region. To the author’s knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a widely tunable carbon-nanotube-enabled passively Q-switched fiber laser operating in the 2.8 μm MIR waveband.

Abstract:we present continuously tunable nanosecond pulses around 3 μm from a passively Q-switched dysprosium (Dy)-doped fluoride fiber laser using a Fe 2+ :ZnSe crystal saturable absorber (SA). In a F-P cavity, including a segment of 37 cm long Dy fiber and closed by two dichroic mirrors, stable Q-switching at the free- running wavelength of 2938 nm is gotten. Attributable to the short cavity and low SA initial transmission, the pulse width of 87 ns has been achieved, representing the shortest and also the first sub-100 ns demonstration of passively Q-switched fiber lasers in the mid- infrared (MIR), to our knowledge. Subsequently, a reflection-type diffraction grating, as the output coupler and wavelength selector, is introduced into the cavity instead, where the Dy fiber has been lengthened to 81 cm in order to obtain a wide tuning range. As a result, the Q-switched pulses can be continuously tuned across the range of 2750∼3320 nm (570 nm), with the varied pulse width of 120∼865 ns. This spectral range is also the widest of continuously tunable pulsed rare-earth-doped fiber lasers in the MIR. The results highlight the great potential of the combination of Dy-doped fluoride fiber and Fe 2+ :ZnSe crystal in wideband nanosecond pulse generation in the spectral region of 3 μm, hence providing a versatile tool for practical applications e.g., laser surgery, polymer processing, free-space communication, and infrared countermeasures.
