Abstract:A diode-pumped erbium ion-doped single-mode ZBLAN fiber laser passively Q-switched by a Fe 2+: ZnSe crystal is reported. Mid-infrared (MIR) pulses at 2.8 μm with a pulse energy of 2.0 μJ and pulse duration of 370 ns, corresponding to a peak power of 5.34 W, are achieved at a repetition rate of 161 kHz. Abstract:An Er3+-doped ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF (ZBLAN) fiber laser was passively mode-locked by inserting a Fe2+:ZnSe crystal into the free space part of the cavity. Continuous-wave mode-locked pulses at 2.8 mu m with a pulse duration of 19 ps estimated from the spectral bandwidth and an average power of 51 mW were generated when a collimated beam traversed the Fe2+:ZnSe crystal, while Q-switched mode-locked pulses were obtained when the Fe2+:ZnSe crystal was illuminated by the focused beam. Abstract:We report a tunable passively Q-switched Ho(3+)-doped ZBLAN fiber laser at 3 μm waveband using a Fe(2+):ZnSe crystal as saturable absorber (SA) and a plane ruled grating in Littrow configuration as wavelength tuning element. Stable pulse trains with ~85 nm tuning range from 2919.1 nm to 3004.2 nm and spectrum bandwidths of ~1 nm were achieved for the Fe(2+):ZnSe crystal with an initial transmission (IT) of 69%. Pulse duration increased from 1.23 μs to 2.35 μs and repetition rate decreased from 96.1 kHz to 43.56 kHz with the extension towards long wavelength direction. With the IT increasing to 79% and then 89%, though the available tuning range was slightly shortened, higher output power, pulse energy and slope efficiency were obtained with the slightly increased pulse duration and repetition rate. Maximum output power of 337 mW at a slope efficiency of 11.44% and pulse energy of 5.64 μJ were achieved at ~2970 nm and ~2991 nm, respectively. High signal noise ratio (SNR) of over 50 dB across the whole tuning range for the three ITs Fe(2+):ZnSe crystals indicated the stable Q-switching. To our knowledge, this is the first reported wavelength tunable passively Q-switched ZBLAN fiber laser.

Abstract:Mode-locked mid-infrared (mid-IR) fiber lasers are of increasing interest due to their many potential applications in spectroscopic sensors, infrared countermeasures, laser surgery, and high-efficiency pump sources for nonlinear wavelength convertors. Er3+-doped ZBLAN (ZrF4-BaF2-LaF3-AlF3-NaF) fiber lasers, which can emit mid-IR light at 2.65-2.9 mu m through the transition from the upper energy level I-4(11/2) to the lower laser level I-4(13/2), have attracted much attention because of their broad emission range, high optical efficiency, and the ready availability of diode pump lasers at the two absorption peaks of Er3+ ions (975 nm and 976 nm). In recent years, significant progress on high power Er3+-doped ZBLAN fiber lasers has been achieved and over 20 watt cw output at 2.8 mu m has been demonstrated; however, there has been little progress on ultrafast mid-IR ZBLAN fiber lasers to date. We report a passively mode-locked Er3+-doped ZBLAN fiber laser in which a Fe2+:ZnSe crystal was used as the intracavity saturable absorber. Fe2+:ZnSe is an ideal material for mid-IR laser pulse generation because of its large saturable absorption cross-section and small saturation energy along with the excellent opto-mechanical (damage threshold similar to 2 J/cm(2)) and physical characteristics of the crystalline ZnSe host. A 1.6 m double-clad 8 mol% Er3+-doped ZBLAN fiber was used in our experiment. The fiber core has a diameter of 15 mu m and a numerical aperture (NA) of 0.1. The inner circular cladding has a diameter of 125 mu m and an NA of 0.5. Both continuous-wave and Q-switched mode-locking pulses at 2.8 mu m were obtained. Continuous-wave mode locking operation with a pulse duration of 19 ps and an average power of 51 mW were achieved when a collimated beam traversed the Fe2+:ZnSe crystal. When the cavity was modified to provide a focused beam at the Fe2+:ZnSe crystal, Q-switched mode-locked operation with a pulse duration of 60 ps and an average power of 4.6 mW was achieved. More powerful and narrower pulses are expected if the dispersion of the cavity can be properly managed.

Abstract:We report the first（to the best of our knowledge） tunable passively Q-switched Er 3+ -doped ZrF 4 fiber laser around 3.5 μm. In this case, a Fe 2+ :ZnSe crystal is used as the saturable absorber, and a plane-ruled grating in a Littrow configuration acts as the tuning element. At the tuned wavelength of 3478.0 nm, stable Q-switching with a maximum average power of 583.7 mW was achieved with a slope efficiency of 15.2% relative to the launched 1981 nm pump power. Further power scaling is mainly limited by the available 1981 nm pump power. The corresponding pulse width, repetition rate, and pulse energy are 1.18 μs, 71.43 kHz, and 7.54 μJ, respectively. By rotating the grating, the Q-switching can be continuously tuned in the region of 3.4–3.7 μm. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first pulsed rare-earth-doped fiber laser tunable in the region beyond 3.4 μm.

Abstract:By adopting a InAs based semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM), we have demonstrated a 3.46 μm passively Q-switched Er3+:ZBLAN fiber laser. An amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) seeded 1973 nm pump source is introduced to enhance the temporal stability. Stable 3.46 μm Q-switched pulse trains are obtained with a maximum repetition rate of 58.71 kHz and corresponding pulse width of 2.47 μs. The maximum average output power and single pulse energy are 63 mW and 1.4 μJ, respectively. The pulse characteristics with respect to the two pump powers are also evaluated. The results prove that the commercial SESAMs in stock have the capacity to extend the operation wavelength to the mid-infrared (mid-IR) wavelength region beyond 3.0 μm.

Abstract:We report a dual-wavelength tunable passively Q-switched Er3+ -doped ZBLAN fiber laser at ~3 nm using a bulk PtSe2 as a saturation absorber. Stable pulses were generated for average output power of 504.0 mW at 72.9 kHz repetition rate. The corresponding pulse width and pulse energy were measured to be 1.26 μs and 6.92 μJ, respectively. By tuning the feedback angle of the plane ruled grating, the spectra show simultaneous dual-wavelength pulsed operations with tuning range of 51.5 nm (2745.5-2797.0 nm) at the launched pump of 2.27 W.

Abstract:We demonstrated a passively Q-switched Er-doped fiber laser based on the ZrSe2/PVA film. Here, the layer structure ZrSe2 platelets were produced by the liquid-phase exfoliation method. By means of nonlinear optical transmittance measurement, the modulation depth and saturation intensity of the ZrSe2/PVA SA were 31% and 4.75 MW/cm2, respectively. The Q-switched pulses revealed the highest repetition rate and pulse energy around 43.7 kHz and 139.8 nJ with the pump power at 346 mW. Based on the invisible filter, we produced the wavelength-tunable and dual-wavelength Q-switched pulses after insertion of the in-line polarizer inside the cavity. Through the proper adjustment of the polarization controller, a tuning wavelength of from 1544.3 to 1563.5 nm, a tuning range of around 19.2 nm, and the smallest tuning interval of around 1 nm have been achieved.

Abstract:We demonstrate a gain-switched Fe:ZnSe laser pumped by a 2958 nm pulsed Ho,Pr:LLF laser. The maximum single pulse energy is 16.4 μJ with a minimum pulse duration of 13.9 ns at the pulse repetition frequency of 1 Hz when the Fe:ZnSe crystal is cooled to 77 K by liquid nitrogen, corresponding to a slope efficiency of 22.9%. The central wavelength and FWHM linewidth are 3957.4 nm and 23.2 nm, respectively. The output energy monotonically decreases as the crystal temperature increases in the range 77–293 K.

Abstract:An iron-cobalt co-doped ZnSe polycrystalline (Co,Fe:ZnSe) was prepared by the thermal diffusion method, and its nonlinear optical response was characterized for the first time. Using the as-prepared Co,Fe:ZnSe as a saturable absorber (SA), the blue laser diode pumped Q-switched Pr:YLF laser at 607 nm (orange), and 639 nm (red) was successfully realized. For 607 nm, the Q-switched laser delivered the shortest pulse width of 59 ns with a repetition rate of 15 kHz. For 639 nm, the shortest pulse width and maximum repetition rate were 119 ns and 32 kHz, respectively. The experimental results indicate that the Co,Fe:ZnSe SA has a great potential for optical pulse generation in the visible region.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an erbium-doped Q-switched fiber laser at 1.5µm by incorporating Fe3O4 nanoparticles as a saturable absorber. A novel approach for SA formation is demonstrated by using the bubble poking method, through which we can fabricate SA films with different thicknesses with ease by changing the number of times of poking the bubbles. The fabricated SA possesses a modulation depth of ∼3.9% and saturable intensity of ∼0.57 MW/cm2. By inserting the SA into the laser cavity, Q-switched laser output is achieved at a pump threshold of 50mW and the central wavelength can be switched when the pump power is above 70mW. This Q-switched all-fiber laser operates stably with a maximum single pulse energy of 126nJ, a maximum repetition rate of 57.5kHz and a minimum pulse width of 5.7µs.

Abstract:At present, pulse widths of passively Q-switched mid-infrared lasers at similar to 2.8 mu m have been limited to be at least several hundreds of nanoseconds. In this letter, by configuring a compact laser resonator, we report on diode-pumped continuous-wave and passively Q-switched mid-infrared Er:YSGG lasers. Laser emission at 2797 nm is achieved with a maximum output power of 0.63 W and slope efficiency of 13.9% in continuous-wave mode. Using polycrystalline Fe:ZnSe as saturable absorber, the passively Q-switched operation is also realized with the narrowest pulse width of about 14.6 ns, which is believed to be the shortest pulse for passively Q-switched mid-infrared lasers. The generated maximum pulse energy and peak power are 5.05 mu J and 345.8 W, respectively.

Abstract:we present continuously tunable nanosecond pulses around 3 μm from a passively Q-switched dysprosium (Dy)-doped fluoride fiber laser using a Fe 2+ :ZnSe crystal saturable absorber (SA). In a F-P cavity, including a segment of 37 cm long Dy fiber and closed by two dichroic mirrors, stable Q-switching at the free- running wavelength of 2938 nm is gotten. Attributable to the short cavity and low SA initial transmission, the pulse width of 87 ns has been achieved, representing the shortest and also the first sub-100 ns demonstration of passively Q-switched fiber lasers in the mid- infrared (MIR), to our knowledge. Subsequently, a reflection-type diffraction grating, as the output coupler and wavelength selector, is introduced into the cavity instead, where the Dy fiber has been lengthened to 81 cm in order to obtain a wide tuning range. As a result, the Q-switched pulses can be continuously tuned across the range of 2750∼3320 nm (570 nm), with the varied pulse width of 120∼865 ns. This spectral range is also the widest of continuously tunable pulsed rare-earth-doped fiber lasers in the MIR. The results highlight the great potential of the combination of Dy-doped fluoride fiber and Fe 2+ :ZnSe crystal in wideband nanosecond pulse generation in the spectral region of 3 μm, hence providing a versatile tool for practical applications e.g., laser surgery, polymer processing, free-space communication, and infrared countermeasures.

Abstract:We report a diode-pumped 2.78 μm Er3+-doped ZBLAN fiber laser passively Q switched by a graphene saturable absorber, which was directly deposited onto a fiber dichroic mirror by the method of optically driven deposition. Stable Q-switched operation with a pulse duration of 2.9 μs and a pulse energy of 1.67 μJ was achieved in a 10 m long gain fiber. The pulse duration was reduced to 1 μs when the gain fiber length was shortened to 2 m. This Letter demonstrates that graphene is a promising and reliable saturable absorber for mid-infrared pulse generation at 3 μm.
