Abstract:One dimensional hierarchically hollow SnO2/alpha-Fe2O3 core-shell nanofibers were synthesized by using electrospun SnO2 hollow nanofibers as core followed by the hydrothermal growth and calcination of alpha-FeOOH nanorods on the outer surface of SnO2 nanofibers. The control experiments indicated that glacial acetic acid introduced in the hydrothermal solution could adjust the nucleation site and density of alpha-FeOOH nanorods as well as prevent the formation of urchin-like alpha-FeOOH byproduct. The growth process of alpha-FeOOH nanorods on SnO2 hollow nanofibers was also investigated. The hierarchical SnO2/alpha-Fe2O3 hollow nanofibers were then fabricated as gas sensors for the investigation of gas sensing applications. By comparison of sensing properties, the response values of the sensors fabricated with hierarchical SnO2/alpha-Fe2O3 core-shell nanofibers toward 100 ppm acetone and ethanol could reach to be 30.363 and 20.370, respectively, exhibiting much better performance than those using urchin-like alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures and pure SnO2 nanofibers. Meanwhile, the sensors based on hierarchical SnO2/alpha-Fe2O3 nanofibers also had shorter response and recovery times than those of alpha-Fe2O3 nanostructures. The synergetic effect of the composite of alpha-Fe2O3 and SnO2 together with unique hollow core-shell architectures are main contribution for the enhanced gas sensing properties. Construction of Co3O4/SnO2 Yolk-Shell Nanofibers for Acetone Gas Detection

Abstract:In this work, Co3O4/SnO2 heterojunctions were proposed and fabricated by single-nozzle electrospinning. Interestingly, novel yolk-shell nanofibers could be formed in a proper doped content of Co3O4. The gas sensing properties of sensors based on Co3O4/SnO2 yolk-shell nanofibers were evaluated, and a superior response of-216-100 ppm acetone at 350 degrees C was obtained. Additionally, Our sensors have an ultrafast response time of-0.62 s, demonstrating remarkable selectivity for acetone and excellent stability for both humidity and long- term use. These exceptional performances are attributed to the synergistic effect of nano-heterojunctions that enhance the effective interfacial area, as well as the unique yolk-shell structure of SnO2/Co3O4, which increases gas transport channels. Our results demonstrate that constructing Co3O4/SnO2 yolk-shell nanofibers is an effective strategy for achieving high-performance acetone gas detection.
High-performance acetone sensor based on electrospun Tb-doped a-Fe<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> nanotubes

Abstract:Gas sensing requires precise gas detection, hence the need for the development of semiconductors with highly selective and sensitive properties. Herein, different amounts of Tb-doped Fe2O3 nanotubes (NTs) are successfully fabricated for detecting acetone gas using electrospinning followed by calcination at 550 ?. Specifically, the gas sensing investigation indicated that 5% Tb-Fe2O3 NTs to 50 ppm acetone reached 53.2 at 170 ?, which is 13 times higher than that of pure Fe2O3 NTs. In addition, the sensor also displays good selectivity and a low detection limit (200 ppb) for acetone. The significant increase in acetone sensing performance could be ascribed to hollow structures with a high specific surface area and the increase in oxygen vacancies by Tb doping. The proposed Tb-doped Fe2O3 NTs offer an effective strategy for fabricating a highly sensitive acetone sensor, which can work well at a relatively low temperature.
Facile synthesis of α-Fe 2 O 3 @SnO 2 core–shell heterostructure nanotubes for high performance gas sensors

Abstract:The hollow α-Fe2O3@SnO2 core–shell nanotubes were successfully synthesized by two-step hydrothermal reaction. The 1D tubular porous nanostructured hybrid material has been found to be an efficient gas-sensing material due to its relative large specific surface area and the porous structure. The α-Fe2O3@SnO2 nanotubes-based sensors exhibited remarkably improved sensing performance, including high response, fast response–recovery, preferable selectivity and excellent repeatability to acetone.

Abstract:A novel hierarchical heterostructures based on α -Fe 2 O 3 /NiO nanosheet-covered fibers were synthesized using a simple two-step process named the electrospinning and hydrothermal techniques. A high density of α -Fe 2 O 3 nanosheets were uniformly and epitaxially deposited on a NiO nanofibers. The crystallinity, morphological structure and surface composition of nanostructured based on α -Fe 2 O 3 /NiO composites were investigated by XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, XPS and BET analysis. The extremely branched α -Fe 2 O 3 /NiO nanosheet-covered fibers delivered an extremely porous atmosphere with huge specific surface area essential for superior gas sensors. Different nanostructured based on α -Fe 2 O 3 /NiO composites were also explored by adjusting the volume ratio of the precursors. The as-prepared samples based on α -Fe 2 O 3 /NiO nanocomposite sensors display apparently enhanced sensing characteristics, including higher sensing response, quick response with recovery speed and better selectivity towards acetone gas at lower operating temperature as compared to bare NiO nanofibers. The sensing response of S-2 based α-Fe 2 O 3 /NiO nanosheet-covered fibers were 18.24 to 100 ppm acetone gas at 169 °C, which was about 6.9 times higher than that of bare NiO nanofibers. The upgraded gas sensing performance of composites based on α -Fe 2 O 3 /NiO nanosheet-covered fibers might be ascribed to the exclusive morphologies with large surface area, p-n heterojunctions and the synergetic performance of α -Fe 2 O 3 and NiO.
Porous Cobalt Oxide Nanowires: Notable Improved Gas Sensing Performances

Abstract:The porous Co 3 O 4 nanowires have been successfully synthesized via modified template method. A possible growth mechanism governing the formation of such 1D nanowires is proposed. The as-prepared products have been characterized by X-ray Powder Diffraction (XRD), Extended X-ray Absorption Fine-structure (EXAFS), High-resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) and N 2 adsorption/desorption analysis. Our systematic studies have revealed that the porous Co 3 O 4 nanowires show excellent gas sensing performances, which demonstrate the potential application of the 1D nanostructured Co 3 O 4 in the detection of the ethanol gas as a sensor material. The improved performances are owing to its large specific surface area and porous morphology.

Abstract:Gas sensors play a crucial part in air monitoring and exclusive detection of exhaled biomarkers. Co3O4 is regarded as a promising gas sensing material in lower temperatures (<200 °C) due to its affinity with oxygen and multivalent characteristics. However, its poor intrinsic conductivity leads to a lower response, hindering further practical applications. The introduction of Fe2O3 is desired to enhance the conductivity and regulate oxygen-vacancy defects. Thus, the Fe2O3@Co3O4 double-shelled nanotubes (DSNTs) for ethanol detection were successfully synthesized through a facile coaxial electrospinning route. The Fe2O3@Co3O4-1 DSNTs based sensor exhibited a lower detection limit (1 ppm) at 160 °C, and a remarkable response 3.5 times higher than that of pure Co3O4 HNTs. The sensor still maintained a good response even under a high humidity of 85%. An oxygen adsorption model combined with an energy band structure diagram was proposed to explain the enhanced sensing mechanism. The enhanced gas-sensing performance can be attributed to double-shelled hollow structures and heterojunctions, which promoted the active sites for gas adsorption on the surface of sensing layers.

Mesoporous Co 3 O 4 nanoneedle arrays for high-performance gas sensor

Abstract:Co3O4 arrays were successfully fabricated via a facile two-step approach, including the formation of needle-shaped Co(CO3)(0.5)(OH) 0.11H(2)O followed by thermal conversion to mesoporous Co3O4. The Co3O4 nanoneedle arrays exhibit mesoporosity and quasi-single-crystalline structure, and can directlyserve as gas sensors without the conventional film formation process, owing to the directly growth on thesubstrates and good ohmic contact with the electrodes. The Co(3)O(4)nanoneedle arrays-based gas sensorshowed high performance in ethanol detection. The highest sensitivity reached similar to 89.6 for 100 ppm ethanolvapor and the optimal working temperature was as low as 130 degrees C. The high performance attributes tothe unique structure of nanoneedle arrays with a variety of favorable features. Abstract:A strategy for improving the sensitivity of a sensor for detecting CO and NH3 gases is presented herein. The gas sensor was fabricated from ZnO metal oxide semiconductor nanostructures grown via a vapor–liquid–solid process and decorated with α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles via a sol–gel process. The response was enhanced by the formation of an α-Fe2O3/ZnO n–n heterojunction and the growth of thinner wires. ZnO nanowires were grown on indium–tin–oxide glass electrodes using Sn as a catalyst for growth instead of Au. The structure and elemental composition were investigated using field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The gas sensing results indicate that the response value to 100 ppm CO was 18.8 at the optimum operating temperature of 300 °C.

Abstract:In this paper, α-Fe2O3 ceramic nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning poly(vinyl alcohol)/Fe (NO3)3·9H2O composite nanofibers and followed by calcination. The morphologies and structures of the as-prepared samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The gas sensing properties of the sensor based on the as-prepared α-Fe2O3 nanofibers were investigated in detail. The experimental results exhibited that our product held rapid response-recovery and high sensitivity characteristics to ethanol vapor. The response and recovery time of the sensor to C2H5OH vapor (from 100 to 5000ppm) are about 3 and 5s, respectively.

Abstract:Metal oxide hetero-nanostructures have widely been used as the core part of chemical gas sensors. To improve the dispersion state of each constituent and the poor stability that exists in heterogeneous gas sensing materials, a uniaxial electro-spinning method combined with calcination was applied to synthesize pure SnO2 and three groups of WO3/SnO2 (WO3 of 0.1, 0.3, 0.9 wt%) hetero-nanofibers (HNFs) in our work. A series of characterizations prove that the products present hollow and fibrous structures composed of even nanoparticles while WO3 is uniformly distributed into the SnO2 matrix. Gas sensing tests display that the WO3/SnO2 (0.3 wt%) sensor not only exhibits the highest response (30.28) and excellent selectivity to acetone vapor at the lower detection temperature (170°C), 6 times higher than that of pure SnO2 (5.2), but still achieves a considerable response (4.7) when the acetone concentration is down to 100 ppb with the corresponding response/recovery times of 50/200 s, respectively. Such structure obviously enhances the gas sensing performance toward acetone which guides the construction of a highly sensitive acetone sensor. Meanwhile, the enhancement mechanism of such a special sensor is also discussed in detail.

Abstract:Array-based sensors have been regarded as excellent candidates for the gas-sensing elements owing to their lowcost preparation, great miniaturization potential as well as stable performance. However, it still remains a great challenge to prepare porous arrays and regulate their porosity to increase pores for gas transport and active sites for surface reactions. To solve this problem, the porosity of metal oxide arrays (Co3O4) that had grown directly in-situ on the surface of ceramic substrates was regulated by the constructing and oxidizing of MOFs (ZIF-67) that coated on the surface cobalt-containing precursor arrays. It was found that the porosity and surface area of Co3O4 nanowire arrays increased with the content of ZIF-67. The porous Co3O arrays with the highest porosity and surface area exhibited the highest response value (R-g/R-a = 16.7), the lowest optimal operating temperature (200 degrees C) as well as the fastest response/recovery time (4/39 s) towards acetone. These porous Co3O4 arrays are thus promising gas-sensing materials for acetone detection with excellent performances. This novel strategy to enhance the porosity of arrays can pave a new way to improve the gas-sensing properties of array film-based sensors.

Abstract:The rational design of nanoscale metal oxides with hollow structures and tunable porosity has stimulated tremendous attention due to their vital importance for practical applications. Here, we report the designed synthesis of ZnO/ZnCo2O4 hollow core-shell nanocages (HCSNCs) through a metal-organic framework (MOF) route. The strategy includes the synthesis of a zeolite imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8)/Co-Zn hydroxide core-shell nanostructure precursor and subsequent transformation to ZnO/ZnCo2O4 HCSNCs by thermal annealing of the as-prepared precursor in air. Various techniques were employed for characterization of the structure and morphology of the as-prepared ZnO/ZnCo2O4 HCSNCs. When applied as a gas sensing material, the ZnO/ZnCo2O4 HCSNCs show enhanced sensitivity to xylene when compared with ZnCo2O4 shells as well as ZnO nanocages (NCs). In addition, excellent reversibility and superior selectivity of the sensor were observed. The remarkable enhancement in the gas-sensing properties of the ZnO/ZnCo2O4 HCSNCs is attributed to their unique structure and a synergistic effect of ZnO and ZnCo2O4.
Efficient acetone sensing utilizing Co3O4-Embedded porous ZnO nanofibers

Abstract:We introduce a high surface area sensor composed of Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles (NPs) embedded within porous ZnO nanofibers (NFs), exhibiting a notable response to acetone. Initially, we synthesized polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) NFs containing zinc and cobalt salts via a simple electrospinning method. Subsequently, the calcination of the PVP NFs resulted in the formation of Co 3 O 4 NPs embedded within the porous ZnO NFs. The heterostructure material demonstrated a significant response to 100 ppm acetone detection, with a ratio of electrical resistance in air (R a ) to that in the presence of gas (R g ) reaching 111 at its optimal operating temperature of 275 °C. Furthermore, it exhibited stable performance under high relative humidity conditions.

Abstract:An efficient and economic sensing material for flexible chemical sensors is increasingly in great demand as a result of its potential application in the healthcare and environmental detection systems. Endowing the nanomaterials with high active facets serves as a promising method for the design of nanomaterials with advanced functionalities. New physicochemical properties of chemical sensor can be obtained by using high active facets nanoparticles combined in one‐dimensional (1D) nanofiber/wires. However, it remains a great challenge to conduct the development of 1D heterostructure sensing materials with high selectivity, in particular the ones that can perform under room temperature. Here, a high performance flexible sensing device based on Co3O4 nanoparticles with specific (112) facet in α‐Fe2O3 nanofiber is reported. The heterointerfaces and grain boundary allow the fast electrons transportation in sensing reactions and the (112) facets in Co3O4 nanoparticles provide a large number of highly active sites where the selective absorption of ammonia gas molecules occurs. Consequently, the flexible gas sensor exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity (417%) and mechanical stability to ammonia gas molecules, which are proved by using density functional theory calculations. A 1D heterostructure nanofiber is designed for a flexible sensing device. Highly active Co‐based catalyst in the nanofiber increases active site abundancy, specific catalytic activity and heterointerfaces. This allows for selective absorption of ammonia gas molecules by a much stronger interface interaction in the ammonia–Co3O4 (112) system as revealed by density functional theory calculations.

Abstract:Fe2O3 nanosheets were in-situ deposited on the interdigitated gold electrodes by hydrothermal treatment of the electrospun nanofibers containing FeCl3 and poly(vinyl butyral). As-prepared electrode was further dip-coated with water-dispersible polyaniline (PANI) to fabricate a resistance gas sensor based on Fe2O3/PANI nanocomposite. The structure and morphology of the nanocomposite were investigated by X-ray diffraction pattern, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the nanocomposite sensor exhibited much higher response magnitude towards low concentration of NH3 (0.5-10.7 ppm) than the sensors based on either PANI or Fe2O3 at room temperature (similar to 20 degrees C), indicating an obvious synergetic effect. The nanocomposite sensor was featured with ultra high response magnitude (relative resistance change of similar to 3070% towards 10.7 ppm of NH3) and excellent selectivity towards NH3. A sensing mechanism has been put forward, which takes into account of the conducting network comprising of bulk PANI and composites of PANI and Fe2O3 nanosheets. It was proposed that the pin heterojunction established between Fe2O3 nanosheets and PANI coating played a major role in the highly desirable sensing performance of the composite. Fe2O3/ZnO core–shell nanorods for gas sensors

Abstract:Fe2O3/ZnO core/shell nanorods were prepared by a solution phase controlled hydrolysis method, and were characterized by XRD, BET and TEM techniques. The surface area of these core/shell nanorods is higher than that of bulk ZnO sensor materials, and in our experiments, the resultant Fe2O3/ZnO gas sensor exhibited a high response, good stability and a short response/recovery time in the detection of low concentrations of various combustible gases. The response/recovery time was less than 20s, and the response decreased slightly after 4 months.

Abstract:In this paper, core-shell Fe2O3@SnO2 nanohybrids were fabricated via a simple flame-assisted spray pyrolysis (FASP) process. A shell layer composed of SnO2 nanocrystals (8-10 nm) was grown in situ on the pristine Fe2O3 nanoparticles, with a tailored thickness ranging from 6-20 nm. The construction of such an intriguing structure thus provided a rational and efficient combination of two kinds of gas sensitive materials, resulting in a remarkably enhanced sensing ability (R-a/R-g) and good selectivity in the detection of 22.8 to 100 ppm ethanol vapor at 300 degrees C, compared to the corresponding pure Fe2O3 and SnO2 materials synthesized by FASP. This enhancement can be mainly attributed to the synergistic effects arising from the presence of both of these materials, i.e. the change of the heterojunction barrier height at the Fe2O3/SnO2 interface. In addition, the in situ flame coating process provides a promising and versatile choice for the synthesis of core-shell nanostructures with multifunctional compositions.

Abstract:In this work, hollow Fe2O3/Co3O4 microcubes have been successfully synthesized through a hydrothermal method followed by an annealing process using metal-organic framework of Prussian blue as a soft template. The morphologies, microstructures, surface area and element compositions have been carefully characterized by a series of techniques. Meanwhile, compared with that of pure Fe2O3 and Co3O4, the gas sensor based on the hollow microcubes exhibits enhanced sensing performances towards acetone, e.g., a higher response of 21.2 and a shorter response time of 5 s towards 20 ppm acetone at a relatively low working temperature of 200 °C. Moreover, the hollow microcubes-based gas sensor still shows perfect long-term stability, excellent repeatability and the ability of sub-ppm level detection, which provides a possibility for its application in real life. The enhanced gas sensing performances can be attributed to the hollow structure with a high surface area and the formed p-n heterojunctions within the microcubes.

Abstract:In recent years, the use of metal ferrites as sensing materials has aroused more and more interest. However, there is a challenge in the use of cobalt ferrite as ethanol sensor with good gas-sensing properties. In this paper, CoFe2O4 was successfully synthesized by using a facile route. The as-synthesized CoFe2O4 exhibited n-type gassensing behavior that the resistance decreases in a reducing gas atmosphere. When applied as sensing materials, CoFe2O4 sensors show good sensitivity to ethanol. At 200 degrees C working temperature, the response value of CoFe2O4 calcined at 400 degrees C (CFO-400) sensor to 100 ppm ethanol gas is 110, which is much higher than that of CoFe2O4 ethanol sensor in other studies. Additionally, the CFO-400 sensor shows satisfactory repeatability and stability, as well as high selectivity to ethanol detection compared to other gases. The possible sensing mechanism is investigated in this paper. This work not only displays a facile way to synthesize CoFe2O4, but also provides potential material for gas sensors in future applications.
