Abstract:Designing hollow micro/nano structures for gas sensing materials is highly desirable for boosting gas sensing properties and still remains challenging, especially through a simple and economic way. Herein, porous In2O3 hollow nanorod (In2O3-HNR), which was successfully fabricated by thermal decomposition of an In-MOF (CPP-3) precursor, was applied as gas sensing materials. The pristine CPP-3 and obtained In2O3-HNR were systematically characterized by various techniques, such as XRD, SEM, TEM, TGA-DTA, XPS, Raman and N-2 physisorption. Characterization results indicated that the hexagonal rod-like shape of original CPP-3 was maintained after calcination, whereas the surface became rough and concave. In addition, the obtained In2O3-HNR displayed a hollow interior with porous shell composed by In2O3 nanoparticles (9 nm). Taking advantage of this unique porous nanostructure, In2O3-HNR exhibited a response as high as 6.2 to 5 ppm ethanol at operating temperature of 200 degrees C, fast response and recovery (3 and 4 s, respectively), and good selectivity to ethanol. The excellent ethanol-sensing properties endow this In-MOF templated In2O3-HNR material with a promising application in practical detection of ethanol gas. This method could be extended to the fabrication of other micro/nano structures with well-defined morphology and composition for high-performance gas sensing considering diversity of MOFs family.

Abstract:A facile metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived isomeric strategy to prepare ZnO@Co3O4 single-shelled hollow cubes (HCs) is described. The crystallinity, morphology, and microstructure of the as-synthesized ZnO@Co3O4 HCs are characterized in detail by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermo gravimetric analysis. The results confirm that ZnO@Co3O4 HCs with porous surfaces are successfully synthesized via a self-templating strategy followed by an annealing process, in which bimetal self-assembled MOF are used as a sacrificial template. The formation mechanism of single-shelled ZnO@Co3O4 HCs is discussed. Gas sensors based on ZnO@Co3O4 HCs not only possess high response, fast response-recovery capability, and good selectivity for toluene at 290 °C, but also show a good linear range from 10 to 100 ppm, good repeatability, and long-term stability. The improved toluene sensing performance compared with the ZnO or Co3O4 components is mainly attributed to their single-shelled hollow structure, which provides larger surface area, more active sites for gas diffusion, catalytic effect of Co3O4, and the synergistic effect of p-n heterojunctions between ZnO and Co3O4.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered potential materials in the gas sensor field because of their extremely porous, adjustable characteristics and high surface area. In this paper, based on a ZIF-8 precursor, ZnO-CuO hollow nanocage heterostructure materials were successfully fabricated by a multistep method, and the prepared ZnO-CuO sensor exhibited excellent respond to H2S. We found that when the mass ratio of CuO reaches 1 wt %, the response to 10 ppm hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was as high as 70, and the recovery time was 55 s at a low temperature of 115 degrees C. Such a ZnO-CuO sensor has a highly selective response to H2S gas. In addition, the lower detection limit can reach 200 ppb. Furthermore, the gas sensors also had high consistency and repeatability. Gas sensing mechanism studies have shown that the special nanocage structure with larger specific surface area helps to increase gas adsorption and diffusion on the surface of sensing materials, and the formation of p-n heterostructures by the introduction of CuO improves the sensitive and selective response to H2S. This work will improve the practical application of H2S gas sensors for their simple preparation method and research into the response mechanism.

Abstract:Metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived ZnCo2O4 was synthesized by utilizing the template agent 2-methylimidazole, zinc and cobalt nitrate by an easy solvothermal process followed by annealing for the first time. The porous hierarchical ZnCo2O4 microstructure possesses a microflower structure assembled by 3D nanosheets. The obtained flower-like structure has abundant open spaces between nanosheets, which allows for facile gas diffusion while providing plentiful active sites for gas adsorption. The hierarchical ZnCo2O4 microflower-based sensor exhibits a high response of 32.32 and fast response/recovery rates (2.6/8.8 s) at 200 °C to 100 ppm acetone gas. In addition, the porous hierarchical ZnCo2O4 microflower-based sensor has a detection limit below 50 ppb with a response of 2.51 to acetone gas. The excellent sensing performance of this porous hierarchical structure-based sensor is ascribed to the good gas accessibility of the microflower morphology with a high specific surface area, small particle size and highly porous structure. This work explores an efficient way to synthesize MOF-derived bimetallic oxides with microflower structures assembled by 3D nanosheets for gas sensing applications.

Abstract:In this study, one-dimensional (1D) zinc oxide was loaded on the surface of cobalt oxide microspheres, which were assembled by single-crystalline porous nanosheets, via a simple heteroepitaxial growth process. This elaborate structure possessed an excellent transducer function from the single-crystalline feature of Co3O4 nanosheets and the receptor function from the zinc oxide nanorods. The structure of the as-prepared hybrid was confirmed via a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). Gas-sensing tests showed that the gas-sensing properties of the as-designed hybrid were largely improved. The response was about 161 (Ra/Rg) to 100 ppm ethanol, which is 110 and 10 times higher than that of Co3O4 (Rg/Ra = 1.47) and ZnO (Ra/Rg = 15), respectively. And the as-designed ZnO/Co3O4 hybrid also showed a high selectivity to ethanol. The superior gas-sensing properties were mainly attributed to the as-designed nanostructures that contained a super transducer function and a super receptor function. The design strategy for gas-sensing materials in this work shed a new light on the exploration of high-performance gas sensors.
Metal-Organic Framework Templated Synthesis of Ultrasmall Catalyst Loaded ZnO/ZnCo2O4 Hollow Spheres for Enhanced Gas Sensing Properties

Abstract:To achieve the rational design of nanostructures for superior gas sensors, the ultrasmall nanoparticles (NPs) loaded on ternary metal oxide (TMO) hollow spheres (HS) were synthesized by using the polystyrene (PS) sphere template and bimetallic metal-organic framework (BM-MOFs) mold. The zinc and cobalt based zeolite imidazole frameworks (BM-ZIFs) encapsulating ultrasmall Pd NPs (2-3 nm) were assembled on PS spheres at room temperature. After calcination at 450 °C, these nanoscale Pd particles were effectively infiltrated on the surface of ZnO/ZnCo2O4 HSs. In addition, the heterojunctions of Pd-ZnO, Pd-ZnCo2O4, and ZnO-ZnCo2O4 were formed on each phase. The synthesized Pd-ZnO/ZnCo2O4 HSs exhibited extremely high selectivity toward acetone gas with notable sensitivity (S = 69% to 5 ppm at 250 °C). The results demonstrate that MOF driven ultrasmall catalyst loaded TMO HSs were highly effective platform for high performance chemical gas sensors.
Co sites induced synergistic effect in hollow Co3O4/ZnO nanocage for enhanced H2S sensing performance

Abstract:Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) derived Co3O4/ZnO heterostructure has been widely investigated to achieve the high sensing performance. However, the synergistic effects generated from the Co sites and the relationship between the surface structure and sensing performance is still ambiguous. Herein, the hollow Co3O4/ZnO nanocage heterojunctions have been successfully synthesized, and the state of Co sites can be modulated by finely tuning the coordination environment of Co species. Notably, the Co3O4/ZnO-1 materials exhibit superior sensing response (Ra/Rg = 546.2, 32 folds than ZnO sensors) to 5 ppm H2S at 110 °C, with low detection limit (9 ppb), fast recovery (35 s) and high selectivity. Detail structural analysis illustrates O2 can be easily activated around the Co3O4/ZnO hetero-interface, and the formation of O− species with high mobility improves the surface reaction rate. Additionally, the catalytic reaction between highly dispersed Co species and H2S also facilitates the formation of CoS, which can synergistically enlarge the sensing response of sensors. Our work illustrates the state of Co species can greatly affect the sensing performance and pave the way for design of high performance sensing materials.

Abstract:The hollow porous tube assembled ZnCo2O4 hierarchical porous architectures (HPA) have been prepared by a solvothermal strategy and subsequent annealing treatment. Various techniques are employed for the characterization of the morphology, structure and surface area of as-prepared ZnCo2O4 HPA. To demonstrate its potential application, ZnCo2O4 HPA is fabricated to be gas sensors to test their gas sensing properties. The ZnCo2O4 HPA sensor shows an enhanced response, fast response/recovery speed (1 s/12 s) and well repeatability and stability toward xylene gas at a working temperature of 260 °C. Such xylene sensing behaviors are attributed to the appropriate catalytic activity of p-type semiconductor ZnCo2O4 and the distinctive hierarchical porous structures, which not only promote the oxidation of xylene and improve surface chemical reaction between chemisorbed oxygen ions and xylene gas, but also facilitate gas permeation and adsorption/desorption. ZnCo2O4 hierarchical porous architectures with high xylene sensing performances hold great prospect in the actual xylene gas detection.

Abstract:We report one kind of Micro-Electro-Mechanical system (MEMS) H2S gas sensors with excellent sensing performance on ppb level (the lowest detection limit is 5 ppb). The sensors were fabricated with ZnO/Co3O4 sensing materials derived from Zn/Co-ZIF by annealing at a suitable temperature 500°C. ZnO/Co3O4-500 exhibits the highest response when exposed to 10 ppb H2S gas at 120°C, and the response/recovery times are 10 s/21 s. What's more, it exhibits outstanding selectivity, long-terms stability (kept 95% response after 45 days), and moisture resistance (had only a minor fluctuation of 2% even at the 90 RH%). This can be ascribed the reason that ZnO/Co3O4-500 has regular morphology, abundant oxygen vacancies (52.8%) and high specific surface area (96.5 m2/g). This work provided not only a high performance H2S MEMS gas sensor but also a systematical study of the effect of the annealing temperature on sensing performance of ZnO/Co3O4 sensing materials derived from bimetal organic frameworks.

Abstract:Surmounting the inhomogeniety issue of gas sensors and realizing their reproducible ppb-level gas sensing are highly desirable for widespread deployments of sensors to build networks in applications of industrial safety and indoor/outdoor air quality monitoring. Herein, a strategy is proposed to substantially improve the surface homogeneity of sensing materials and gas sensing performance via chip-level pyrolysis of as-grown ZIF-L (ZIF stands for zeolitic imidazolate framework) films to porous and hierarchical zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheets. A novel approach to generate adjustable oxygen vacancies is demonstrated, through which the electronic structure of sensing materials can be fine-tuned. Their presence is thoroughly verified by various techniques. The sensing results demonstrate that the resultant oxygen vacancy-abundant ZnO nanosheets exhibit significantly enhanced sensitivity and shortened response time toward ppb-level carbon monoxide (CO) and volatile organic compounds encompassing 1,3-butadiene, toluene, and tetrachloroethylene, which can be ascribed to several reasons including unpaired electrons, consequent bandgap narrowing, increased specific surface area, and hierarchical micro-mesoporous structures. This facile approach sheds light on the rational design of sensing materials via defect engineering, and can facilitate the mass production, commercialization, and large-scale deployments of sensors with controllable morphology and superior sensing performance targeted for ultratrace gas detection.

Abstract:Gas sensors based on semiconductor metal oxides are identified as a highly promising candidate for toxic gas detection, yet they still suffer from high operating temperature due to low surface activity at low temperature. To address this issue, we present an elaborate design for the homogeneous functionalization of ZIF-L(Co) derived cobalt (Co) catalysts into hollow In 2 O 3 frameworks, aiming to highly activate the redox capacity and catalytic efficacy of the In 2 O 3 sensor to HCHO gas. Benefiting from the Co catalysts doping boosts the catalytic activity and generates abundant oxygen vacancies, the optimized 1 wt% Co-doped In 2 O 3 HNFs sensor exhibits a high response of 40.4 toward 100 ppm HCHO at a moderately low temperature of 180 °C, which is 4 times higher than that of pristine In 2 O 3 HNFs. Moreover, 1 wt% Co-doped In 2 O 3 HNFs sensor has virtues of high selectivity and excellent long-term stability for HCHO sensing. This study highlights the important influence of Co catalyst on the modulation of surface active sites of metal oxides-based sensors, inspiring the development of cost-effective sensors for indoor hazardous gas monitoring.

Abstract:As a typical metal oxide semiconductor, ZnO has been investigated deeply for the application of gas sensing materials. In this study, an ultrahigh sensitive and selective NO2 gas sensor based on porous ZnO nanocubes derived from metal organic frameworks (MOFs) was reported. The MOF-derivatives were obtained by precisely control of the subsequent pyrolysis process. The sensitivity of MOF-derivatives toward 1 ppm NO2 at 200 degrees C was 51.41 under 500 degrees C pyrolysis treatment. Compared with similar work, the sensitivity has been greatly improved. Furthermore, the fabricated gas sensor demonstrated excellent selectivity to NO2 over other gases (CO, C2H5OH, H2, H2S, NO, NH3). The ultrahigh sensitivity and selectivity were attributed to the unique structure after pyrolysis, which provides more exposed active sites and connected pore channels.

Abstract:Highly selective methane sensing remains a formidable challenge in the field of metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based gas sensors. To address this issue, zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) modulation is considered as an effective approach because of its pore size sieving and polarity sieving effects. In this work, core-shell ZnO/Pd@Co node-replaced ZIF-8 (ZIF-8/67) nanorods were synthesized by self-sacrificial template method, followed by post-synthetic modification of ZIF-8. When the replacement ratio of Co nodes reached 12.4%, ZnO/Pd@ZIF-8/67 exhibited a response of 12.2% to 500 ppm CH4 at 210°C but no response to 50 ppm CO, 50 ppm NH3 and 5 ppm NO2, showing excellent selectivity. By limiting rotational freedom of 2-methylimidazole, Co node replacement decreased the effective pore size from 4.0-4.2Å to 3.8-4.0Å and hindered the diffusion of NO2 with the dynamic diameter of 4.5Å, thus enhancing the pore size sieving effect. Moreover, polarity sieving effect is also enhanced due to the favourable adsorption of polar CO (3.76Å) and NH3 (2.6Å) by ZIF. Therefore, the selectivity of nonpolar CH4 (3.8Å) was improved. This work provides a new strategy for reasonably controlling and modulating the ZIF structure to achieve high selectivity in MOS-based sensors.

Abstract:It is an effective way to produce core–shell composite materials by coating nano-metal oxides with metal-organic framework. A self-sacrificial method was reported. ZnO was transformed into ZIF-8 and attached to ZnO. Through the in situ transformation of zinc oxide particles in the matrix, a great many pores are formed to ensure that all parts of ZnO can contact the gas. ZnO has three main functions, providing Zn 2+ for ZIF-8 and serving as a template for ZIF-8’s growth, and as an active material to detect gases. ZIF-8 has two functions. Firstly, it has hydrophobicity to avoid the impact of steam on the gas detection of ZnO; secondly, it can provide a large amount of pores, increase the specific surface area. A great many defects created at the interface of the two materials increases the active sites. The gas-sensing performance of ZnO to volatile organic compounds can be improved using the advantages of both materials. The composite sensor has an optimal operating temperature of 350 °C and has more than tripled its response to 50 ppm gases relative to the ZnO sensor. In addition, a gas-sensing mechanism is proposed. An effective strategy for developing high-response VOC sensors is presented in this work.

Redox Synergy: Enhancing Gas Sensing Stability in 2D Conjugated Metal–Organic Frameworks via Balancing Metal Node and Ligand Reactivity

Abstract:Two-dimensional conjugated metal–organic frameworks (2D c-MOFs) have emerged as promising candidates in gas sensing, owing to their tunable porous structure and conductivity. Nevertheless, the reported gas sensing mechanisms heavily relied on electron transfer between metal nodes and gas molecules. Normally, the strong interaction between the metal sites and target gas molecule would result poor recovery and thus bad recycling property. Herein, we propose a redox synergy strategy to overcome this issue by balancing the reactivity of metal sites and ligands. A 2D c-MOF, Zn3(HHTQ)2, was prepared for nitrogen dioxide (NO2) sensing, which was constructed from active ligands (hexahydroxyl-tricycloquinazoline, HHTQ) and inactive transition-metal ions (Zn2+). Substantial characterizations and theoretical calculations demonstrated that by utilizing only the redox interactions between ligands and NO2, not only high sensitivity and selectivity, but also excellent cycling stability in NO2 sensing could be achieved. In contrast, control experiments employing isostructural 2D c-MOFs with Cu/Ni metal nodes exhibited irreversible NO2 sensing. Our current work provides a new design strategy for gas sensing materials, emphasizing harnessing the redox activity of only ligands to enhance the stability of MOF sensing materials.

Abstract:The surface states of gas sensing materials based on oxide semiconductors are closely related to their sensing dynamics. In this work, p-type ZnCo2O4 architectures with surface engineering are prepared through a feasible hydrothermal strategy followed by subsequent annealing treatment, and are applied for inert xylene gas detection. The as-prepared ZnCo2O4 architecture (ZCO-300) exhibits a higher response and selectivity toward xylene gas at a working temperature of 170 °C. Moreover, the ZCO-300 sensor also presents superior stability/reliability, well moisture resistance and a low detection limit of 0.1 ppm. The more oxygen vacancy defects and higher specific surface area in ZCO-300 not only promote the catalytic oxidation of xylene gas by p-type semiconductor ZnCo2O4, but also provide more gas adsorption sites and surface reaction sites on sensing material surfaces, thereby making ZCO-300 present superior xylene gas sensing properties.

Abstract:Highly sensitive and selective gas sensors based on heterostructured p-CuO/n-SnO2 core-shell nanowires (NWs) with precisely controlled shell thickness were synthesized through a sequential process combining a solution processing and atomic layer deposition. The gas sensing devices were fabricated on micro-electromechanical systems, which has triggered great research interest for low power consumption and highly integrated design. The designed p-CuO/n-SnO2 core-shell NW structured gas sensors exhibited superior gas sensing performance, which is closely related to the thickness of the SnO2 shell. Specifically, p-CuO/n-SnO2 core-shell NWs with a 24 nm thick SnO2 shell displayed a high sensitivity (R-a/R-g) of 2.42, whose rate of resistance change (i.e. 1.42) is 3 times higher than the pristine CuO NW sensor when detecting 50 ppm formaldehyde (HCHO) at 250 degrees C. The enhanced gas sensing performance could be attributed to the formation of p-n heterojunction which was revealed by specific band alignment and the heterojunction-depletion model. Besides, the well-structured p-CuO/n-SnO2 core-shell NWs achieved excellent selectivity for HCHO from commonly occurred reducing gases. In a word, such heterostructured p-CuO/n-SnO2 core-shell NW gas sensors demonstrate a feasible approach for enhanced sensitive and selective HCHO detection.
