Abstract:We present high efficiency and stable inverted PSCs (i-PSC) by employing sol-gel processed simultaneously doped ZnO by Indium and fullerene derivative (BisNPC60-OH) (denoted as InZnO-BisC60) film as cathode interlayer and PTB7-Th:PC71BM as the active layer (where PTB7-Th is a low bandgap polymer we proposed previously). This dual-doped ZnO, InZnO-BisC60, film shows dual and opposite gradient dopant concentration profiles, being rich in fullerene derivative at the cathode surface in contact with active layer and rich in In at the cathode surface in contact with the ITO surface. Such doping in ZnO not only gives improved surface conductivity by a factor of 270 (from 0.015 to 4.06 S cm−1) but also provides enhanced electron mobility by a factor of 132 (from 8.25*10−5 to 1.09*10−2 cm2 V−1 s−1). The resulting i-PSC exhibits the improved PCE 10.31% relative to that with ZnO without doping 8.25%. This PCE 10.31% is the best result among the reported values so far for single junction PSC.

Abstract:Indium tin oxide (ITO) is a transparent conductive material which is extensively used in organic solar cells (OSCs) as electrodes. In inverted OSCs, ITO is usually employed as a cathode, which should be modified by cathode buffer layers (CBLs) to achieve better contact with the active layers. In this paper, an amine group functionalized fullerene derivative (DMAPA-C-60) is used as a CBL to modify the transparent cathode ITO in inverted OSCs based on PTB7 as a donor and PC71BM as an acceptor. Compared with traditional ZnO CBL, DMAPA-C-60 exhibited comparable transmittance. OSCs based on DMAPA-C-60 show much better device performance compared with their ZnO counterparts (power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) improved from 6.24 to 7.43%). This is mainly because a better contact between the DMAPA-C-60 modified ITO and the active layer is formed, which leads to better electron transport and collection. Nanoscale morphologies also demonstrate that the surface of DMAPA-C-60-modified ITO is plainer than the ZnO counterparts, which also leads to the better device performance.

Abstract:High-performance non-fullerene OSCs with PCEs of up to ca. 6.0% are demonstrated based on PBDTT-F-TT polymer and a molecular di-PBI acceptor through comprehensive molecular, interfacial, and device engineering. Impressive PCEs can also be retained in devices with relatively thick BHJ layer and processed through non-halogenated solvents, indicating these high-performance non-fullerene OSCs are promising for large-area printing applications.

Abstract:An amine-based, alcohol-soluble fullerene [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid 2-((2-(dimethylamino)ethyl)(methyl)amino)-ethyl ester (PCBDAN) with 4-fold electron mobility of 6,6-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) is applied successfully as an acceptor and cathode interfacial material in polymer solar cells ITO/P3HT:PCBDAN/MoO3/Ag, where indium tin oxide (ITO) alone is used as the cathode and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) is used as a donor. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) depth profile confirming a favorable vertical phase separation is formed where P3HT is rich at the air/active blend interface and PCBDAN is rich at the buried interface with ITO and, thus, reduces the work function of ITO for use as the cathode. A moderate power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 3.1% is achieved. The slightly low PCE could be due to unoptimized morphology and low structure ordering of P3HT in the blends. However, this result demonstrates that the amine-based fullerene could be used as the acceptor and cathode interfacial material, which eliminated the multilayer device fabrication process. Because PCBDAN has high electron mobility, it would have potential applications in nano-structured organic solar cells. In the near future, alcohol-processable, high-efficient organic/polymer solar cells can be anticipated.

Abstract:We present a novel idea for overcoming the drawback of poor contact between the ZnO cathode and active layer interface in an inverted polymer solar cell (i-PSC), simply by incorporating an electron-acceptor self-assembled monolayer (SAM)--tetrafluoroterephthalic acid (TFTPA)--on the ZnO cathode surface to create an electron-poor surface of TFTPA on ZnO. The TFTPA molecules on ZnO are anchored on the ZnO surface by reacting its carboxyl groups with hydroxyl groups on the ZnO surface, such that the tetrafluoroterephthalate moieties lay on the surface with plane-on electron-poor benzene rings acting as positive charge centers. Upon coating a layer of fullerenes on top of it, the fullerene molecules can be physically adsorbed by Coulombic interaction and facilitate a promoted electron collection from the bulk. The active layer is composed of the mid bandgap polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) or low bandgap polymer, poly[[4,8-bis[(2-ethylhexyl)oxy]benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dithiophene-2,6-diyl][3-fluoro-2-[(2-ethylhexyl) carbonyl]thieno[3,4-b]thiophenediyl]] (PTB7), as the donor and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PC61BM) or [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the acceptor. Significant enhancement in power conversion efficiency (PCE) was observed for the devices with the active layer P3HT:PC61BM (or PC71BM) by promoting from 3.20 to 4.03% (or from 3.27 to 4.04%) and with the active layer PTB7:PC71BM from 6.03 to 6.90%. This method should be also applicable to other types of active layer.
A Narrow Band Gap Non-Fullerene Electron Acceptor Based on a Dithieno-3,2-b:2′,3′-Dlpyrrole Unit for High Performance Organic Solar Cells with Minimal Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital Offset

Abstract:Here, a new narrow band gap non-fullerene small molecular acceptor (NFSMA) based on a dithieno-3,2-b:2 ',3 '-dlpyrrole(DTP) unit, namely SNIC-F, was designed and synthesized. Due to the strong electron-donating ability of the DTP-based fused-ring core, SNIC-F showed a strong intramolecular-charge transfer (ICT) effect and thus gave a narrow band gap of 1.32 eV. Benefiting from the low band gap and efficient charge separation, when pairing with a copolymer PBTIBDTT, the device optimized by 0.5% 1-CN gave a high short circuit current (J(sc)) of 19.64 mA cm(-2). In addition, a high open-circuit voltage (V-oc) of 0.83 V was obtained due to the near 0 eV highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) offset between PBTIBDTT and SNIC-F. As a result, a high power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.25% was obtained, and the PCE was maintained above 9.2% as the active layer thickness increased from 100 nm to 250 nm. Our work indicated that designing a narrow band gap NFSMA-based DTP unit and blending it with a polymer donor with small HOMO offset is an efficient strategy for achieving high performance OSCs.

Abstract:A method has been developed to fabricate organic solar cell based on poly(3-hexylthiopene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM) film with a thickness as thin as ∼60 nm. The P3HT chain ordering can be dramatically enhanced by slow solvent evaporation process, which is verified by obvious vibronic features and enhanced absorption capability. Due to the improvement of P3HT chain ordering degree, the solar cell based on ultrathin film achieves the power conversion efficiency of 3.7%. Furthermore, the fabrication process does not require any post-treatments such as solvent-vapor or thermal annealing process, which is more compatible with future plastic substrates.

Abstract:Two cheliforrn non-fullerene acceptors, DTPC-IC and DTPC-DFIC, based on a highly electron-rich core, dithienopicenocarbazole (DTPC), are synthesized, showing ultra-narrow bandgaps (as low as 1.21 eV). The two-dimensional nitrogen-containing conjugated DTPC possesses strong electron-donating Capability, which induces intense intramolecular charge transfer and intermolecular pi-pi stacking hi derived acceptors. The solar cell based on DTPC-DFIC and a spectrally complementary polymer donor, PTB7-Th, showed a high power conversion efficiency of 10.21% and an extremely low energy loss of 045 eV, which is the lowest among reported efficient OSCs.

Abstract:A new fused‐ring electron acceptor FOIC1 is designed and synthesized. FOIC1 exhibits intense absorption in the range of 600–1000 nm, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)/the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy levels of −5.39/−3.99 eV, and electron mobility of 1.8 × 10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1. Organic solar cells based on sequentially processed heterojunction (SHJ) with an unusual inverted structure are fabricated. Through sequentially spin‐coating polymer donor PTB7‐Th as the bottom layer and acceptor FOIC1 as the top layer, a better vertical phase distribution is formed in this SHJ compared with that in traditional bulk heterojunction (BHJ). In the upper‐half part, a more balanced donor/acceptor distribution is beneficial for exciton dissociation. At the bottom interface, more FOIC1 accumulation is beneficial for exciton generation and charge transport. Overall, the SHJ cells exhibit power conversion efficiency as high as 12.0%, higher than that of the BHJ counterpart (11.0%).
Boosting the Efficiency of Non-fullerene Organic Solar Cells via a Simple Cathode Modification Method

Abstract:This work demonstrates a simple yet effective method to significantly improve the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of highly efficient non-fullerene organic solar cells by mixing two electron transport materials. The new electron transport layer shows an energy level better aligned with the active layer and an improved morphology that could reduce the active layer-electrode contact. These improvements lead to enhanced charge extraction, better charge selectivity, suppressed exciton recombination, and finally a boosted PCE in the PM6:Y6-based solar cells. When applied in conjunction with the non-halogenated solvent-processed PM6:PY-IT-based active layer, the mixed ETL also gives rise to a leading result for binary all-polymer solar cells (PCE of >16%) with a concurrent increase in VOC, JSC, and FF.

Abstract:Although high power conversion efficiencies (PCE) have already been demonstrated in conventional structure polymer solar cells (PSCs), the development of high performance inverted structure polymer solar cells is still lagging behind despite their demonstrated superior stability and feasibility for roll-to-roll processing. To address this challenge, a detailed study of solution-processed, inverted-structure PSCs based on the blends of a low bandgap polymer, poly(indacenodithiophene-co-phananthrene-quinoxaline) (PIDT-PhanQ) and [6,6]-phenyl-C71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as the bulk heterojunction (BHJ) layer is carried out. Comprehensive characterization and optical modeling of the resulting devices is performed to understand the effect of device geometry on photovoltaic performance. Excellent device performance can be achieved by optimizing the optical field distribution and spatial profiles of excitons generation within the active layer in different device configurations. In the inverted structure, because the peak of the excitons generation is located farther away from the electron-collecting electrode, a higher blending ratio of fullerene is required to provide higher electron mobility in the BHJ for achieving good device performance.

Abstract:A nonfullerene electron acceptor (IEIC) based on indaceno[1,2-b:5,6-b']dithiophene and 2-(3-oxo-2,3-dihydroinden-1-ylidene)malononitrile was designed and synthesized. IEIC exhibited good thermal stability, strong absorption in the 500-750 nm region with an extinction coefficient of 1.1 x 10(5) M-1 cm(-1) at 672 nm, deep LUMO energy level (-3.82 eV) close to those of fullerenes, and a relatively high electron mobility of 2.1 x 10(-4) cm(2) V-1 s(-1). Fullerene-free polymer solar cells (PSCs) based on the blends of the IEIC acceptor and a low-bandgap polymer donor PTB7-TH, using a perylene diimide derivative as a cathode interlayer, showed power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of up to 6.31%, which is among the best PCEs reported for fullerene-free PSCs.

Abstract:Non-fullerene organic solar cells (OSCs) have attracted great attention due to their advantages such as tunable energy levels, reduced energy loss, strong light absorption. Here, three small molecules with polar functional groups were utilized to modify the surface of zinc oxide (ZnO) electron transport layer through self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formation. Inverted non-fullerene OSCs with PBDB-T: ITIC blend as active layer based on the ZnO with SAMs modification showed enhanced device performance (10.90%) compared to that without SAM treatment (10.03%). The ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy results revealed that the SAMs could lower the surface work function of ZnO, allowing for better electron extraction. The analysis results of J-V characteristics under different light illumination intensities suggested more efficient charge dissociation and weaker trap-assisted bimolecular recombination in the devices with SAMs modification. Our work provides an effective approach to modify the ZnO surface for efficient non-fullerene OSCs.

Abstract:High-quality ZnO films (ZnO-MS) are prepared via magnetron sputtering deposition with a high mobility of about 2 cm2/(V·s) and are used as electron transport layer for inverted polymer solar cells (PSCs) with polymer poly[4,8-bis(5-(2-ethylhexyl)thiophen-2-yl)benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]dithiophene-co-3-fluorothieno[3,4-b]thiophene-2-carboxylate]:[6,6]-phenyl C71-butyric acid methyl ester as the active layer. A significant improvement of JSC, about 20% enhancement in contrast to the devices built on sol-gel derived ZnO film (ZnO-Sol), is found in the ZnO-MS based device. High performance ZnO-MS based PSCs exhibit power conversion efficiency (PCE) up to 8.55%, which is much better than the device based on ZnO-Sol (PCE = 7.78%). Further research on cathode materials is promising to achieve higher performance.

Abstract:Compared to the traditional fullerene derivatives, non-fullerene acceptors show more tunable absorption bands as well as adjustable energy levels which are favorable for further PCE enhancement of organic solar cells. In order to enhance light-harvesting property of dithienonaphthalene (DTN)-based acceptors, we designed and synthesized two novel non-fullerene acceptors (DTNIF and DTNSF) based on a ladder-type DTN donor core flanked with two different acceptor units. In combination with a benchmark wide bandgap copolymer (PBDB-T), the best performance device based on DTNIF displayed a high PCE of 8.73% with a short-circuit current (J sc) of 13.26 mA cm-2 and a large fill factor (FF) of 72.77%. With a reduced bandgap of DTNSF, the corresponding best performance device showed an increased J sc of 14.49 mA cm-2 although only a moderate PCE of 7.15% was achieved. These findings offer a molecular design strategy to control the bandgap of DTN-based non-fullerene acceptors with improved light-harvesting.

Abstract:Combining wide bandgap and narrow bandgap organic materials to construct tandem organic solar cells (OSCs) offers opportunities for overcoming the efficiency limitation of single-junction OSCs. Commonly, the inorganic metal oxide of zinc oxide (ZnO) was considered as the most efficient electron collection layer (ECL) for the tandem device. Herein, the tin oxide (SnO2) nanoparticles are employed as the ECL in the inverted tandem devices due to their advantages of low-temperature solution processability, excellent transmittance, and high electron mobility. Thereby, the two tandem organic devices based on PBDB-T (or J71):IT-M-front cells and the PCE10:IEICO-rear cell with 10 nm-thick SnO2 ECLs in inverted structures provide power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 12.06% and 12.34%, respectively. Abstract:The efficient near-infrared response of light-active materials is one of the prerequisites for the most advanced organic solar cells (OSCs). Two benzodithiophene fused-ring cores (BT-4T and DBT-4T), featured with stepwise enlarged conjugations and improved electron-donor characteristics, are designed and used as the central donor units for the construction of acceptor–donor–acceptor-type molecules ZB8 and ZB10. The significantly enhanced intramolecular charge transfer endows ZB8- and ZB10-based OSCs with a photoelectronic response over 1000 nm. With more favorable molecular energy levels and an asymmetric configuration, ZB8-based best OSCs afford a 12.30% power conversion efficiency, better than that of 11.08% for the ZB10-based one. Abstract:Tetra-nuclear Zinc(II) complex Zn4O(AID)(6) [AID = 7-azaindolate] is a wide band gap luminescent material that exhibits efficient emission matching the absorption spectra of organic donor materials such as polythiophene (P3HT). This work demonstrates polymer solar cells (PSC) based on P3HT: PCBM (phenylC61-butyric acid methyl ester) blend active layer with a Zn4O(AID)(6) cathode interfacial layer achieving a power conversion efficiency (PCE) significantly higher than that of the reference devices. The energy level and impedance spectroscopy analysis show that the Zn4O(AID)(6) cathode interfacial layer acts as an efficient exciton/ hole blocking layer, and reduces charge recombination rate with more efficient electron extraction. The Zn4O(AID)(6) interfacial layer also helps achieve longer lifetime of PSC devices. The improved efficiency and stability combined with low cost and nontoxicity of Zn4O(AID)(6) make it a promising cathode interfacial material for high-performance and stable PSC devices. Efficient and Stable Inverted Perovskite Solar Cells Enabled by a Fullerene‐Based Hole Transport Molecule

Abstract:Designing an efficient modification molecule to mitigate non-radiative recombination at the NiOx/perovskite interface and improve perovskite quality represents a challenging yet crucial endeavor for achieving high-performance inverted perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Herein, we synthesized a novel fullerene-based hole transport molecule, designated as FHTM, by integrating C60 with 12 carbazole-based moieties, and applied it as a modification molecule at the NiOx/perovskite interface. The in-situ self-doping effect, triggered by electron transfer between carbazole-based moiety and C60 within the FHTM molecule, along with the extended π conjugated moiety of carbazole groups, significantly enhances FHTM's hole mobility. Coupled with optimized energy level alignment and enhanced interface interactions, the FHTM significantly enhances hole extraction and transport in corresponding devices. Additionally, the introduced FHTM efficiently promotes homogeneous nucleation of perovskite, resulting in high-quality perovskite films. These combined improvements led to the FHTM-based PSCs yielding a champion efficiency of 25.58% (Certified: 25.04%), notably surpassing that of the control device (20.91%). Furthermore, the unencapsulated device maintained 93% of its initial efficiency after 1000 hours of maximum power point tracking under continuous one-sun illumination. This study highlights the potential of functionalized fullerenes as hole transport materials, opening up new avenues for their application in the field of PSCs.
