Abstract:Software defined optical networks（SDONs） integrate software defined technology with optical communication networks and represent the promising development trend of future optical networks. The key technologies for SDONs include software-defined optical transmission, switching, and networking. The main features include control and transport separation, hardware universalization, protocol standardization, controllable optical network, and flexible optical network applications.This paper introduces software defined optical networks and its innovation environment, in terms of network architecture,protocol extension solution, experiment platform and typical applications. Batch testing has been conducted to evaluate the performance of this SDON testbed. The results show that the SDON testbed has good scalability in different sizes.Meanwhile, we notice that controller output bandwidth has great influence on lightpath setup delay.

Abstract:With the features of network virtualization and resource programming, Software Defined Optical Network (SDON) is considered as the future development trend of optical network, provisioning a more flexible, efficient and open network function, supporting intraconnection and interconnection of data centers. Meanwhile cloud platform can provide powerful computing, storage and management capabilities. In this paper, with the coordination of SDON and cloud platform, a multi-domain SDON architecture based on cloud control plane has been proposed, which is composed of data centers with database (DB), path computation element (PCE), SDON controller and orchestrator. In addition, the structure of the multidomain SDON orchestrator and OpenFlow-enabled optical node are proposed to realize the combination of centralized and distributed effective management and control platform. Finally, the functional verification and demonstration are performed through our optical experiment network.

Abstract:We propose a semicentralized semidistributed network architecture based on active stateful path computation elements (PCEs) to intelligently provide end-to-end inter-domain connections in multi-domain optical transport networks supplied by different equipment vendors. A novel control entity, called an inter-domain communication control and management element (ICCME), is introduced into the architecture to achieve flexible distributed interdomain control and centralized intra-domain management by integrating with "proactive" and "reactive" stateful capabilities. Inter-domain routing and signaling are completed with the collaboration of multiple ICCMEs in a peer-to-peer manner, which decentralizes highly intensive computation and signaling to multiple ICCMEs. In addition, we put forward a unified inter-domain communication protocol to eliminate the differences in private signaling message formats of various vendors' domains. We report a successful field trial of providing inter-domain connections across a commercial three-domain three-vendor optical transport network. Also, experimental results indicate that ICCME-based architecture performs better than previous schemes in terms of scalability, i.e., low average routing load of control entities and low average delay in establishing interdomain connections, but results in higher message overhead and blocking probability.

Abstract:The coexistence of different types of equipment in an optical network makes the network complex and heterogeneous.If interconnection has not been realized,bottlenecks can occur that constrain the further development of the network.This article highlights control and internetworking problems in heterogeneous high-capacity optical networks.New technologies are introduced,including a novel centralized-distributed-mixed management and control architecture for large-scale heterogeneous optical networks,a K random-paths routing technology,an outer-ring based multi-domain topology,and an immediate re-routing signaling technology.Results of experiments carried out on our recently established heterogeneous network test-bed are also given.

Abstract:The emerging software defined networking (SDN) paradigm separates the data plane from the control plane and centralizes network control in an SDN controller. Applications interact with controllers to implement network services, such as network transport with quality of service. SDN facilitates the virtualization of network functions so that multiple virtual networks can operate over a given installed physical network infrastructure. Due to the specific characteristics of optical (photonic) communication components and the high optical transmission capacities, SDN-based optical networking poses particular challenges, but holds also great potential. In this article, we comprehensively survey studies that examine the SDN paradigm in optical networks; in brief, we survey the area of software defined optical networks (SDONs). We mainly organize the SDON studies into studies focused on the infrastructure layer, the control layer, and the application layer. Moreover, we cover SDON studies focused on network virtualization, as well as SDON studies focused on the orchestration of multilayer and multidomain networking. Based on the survey, we identify open challenges for SDONs and outline future directions.

Abstract:The combination of elastic optical networks (EONs) and software-defined networking (SDN) leads to SD-EONs, which bring a new opportunity for enhancing programmability and flexibility of optical networks with more freedom for network operators to customize their infrastructure dynamically. In this paper, we investigate how to apply multidomain scenarios to SD-EONs. We design the functionalities in the control plane to facilitate multidomain tasks, and propose an interdomain protocol to enable OpenFlow controllers in different SD-EON domains to operate cooperatively for multidomain routing and spectrum assignment. The proposed system is implemented and experimentally demonstrated in a multinational SD-EON control plane testbed that consists of two geographically distributed domains located in China and USA, respectively. Experimental results indicate that the proposed system performs well for resource allocation across multiple SD-EON domains.

It also seeks to explain how OpenFlow could be used as a part of this solution to overcome the limitations of GMPLS.

Abstract:Based on the analysis of data centre（DC） traffic pattern, we introduced a holistic software-defined optical DC solution. Architecture-on-Demand based hybrid optical switched（OPS/OCS） data centre network（DCN） fabric is introduced, which is able to realise different inter-and intra-cluster configurations and dynamically support diverse traffic in the DC. The optical DCN is controlled and managed by a software-defined networking（SDN） enabled control plane to achieve high programmability. Moreover, virtual data centre（VDC） composition is developed as an application of such softwaredefined optical DC to create VDC slices for different tenants.

Abstract:Hybrid TDM/WDM PON is a promising optical access network solution which taking advantages of both TDM-PON and WDM-PON, and suitable for near future deployment in pragmatic migration from current TDM-PONs to future WDM-PONs. In this paper, we review and compare five types of the representative hybrid TDM/WDM PON architectures: TDMA based hybrid PON, WDMA based hybrid PON, TDM over WDM hybrid PON, WDM over TDM hybrid PON, and SUCCESS hybrid PON. Several key issues and enabling technologies for deploying hybrid TDM/WDM PON, including wavelength assignment, media access control and wavelength management protocols, light sources, and protection, are also discussed in the paper.

Abstract:The rapid growth of the network traffic and the diversity of the network requirements bring network service providers new demands and challenges. In order to achieve better efficiency and resource utilization, we need to solve the problems caused by the heterogeneous network environment, such as the low resource utilization and the control and management collaboration problem of heterogeneous networks. The promotion of the software-defined network concept brings the network operators a new way of thinking to solve the problem caused by heterogeneous network environment, especially the convergence of packet and optical network. We propose a control architecture for packet and optical network convergence, including how to be compatible with the existing optical network control architecture. A series of network performance parameters have been demonstrated under various network environments on our testbed.
