Abstract:The coexistence of different types of equipment in an optical network makes the network complex and heterogeneous.If interconnection has not been realized,bottlenecks can occur that constrain the further development of the network.This article highlights control and internetworking problems in heterogeneous high-capacity optical networks.New technologies are introduced,including a novel centralized-distributed-mixed management and control architecture for large-scale heterogeneous optical networks,a K random-paths routing technology,an outer-ring based multi-domain topology,and an immediate re-routing signaling technology.Results of experiments carried out on our recently established heterogeneous network test-bed are also given.

Abstract:Control methods in the traditional optical network heavily rely on the deployment of underlying hardware resources and the requirements of network applications, which hinders the flexible control in large-scale optical networks. The design thought of software defined network was introduced, with the status transition regularity of traditional finite state machines analyzed, and with a common programmable finite state machine (pFSM) model then presented for flexible control in large-scale optical networks. By using pFSM, a flexible control system was designed based on the path computation element (PCE) architecture and a dynamic control experimental platform was constructed for multi-domain heterogeneous optical networks. The platform was used to test intra-domain/interdomain traffic establishment and removal using different switching granularities and different survivability strategies. The results show that the platform provides dynamic controlling and flexible scheduling using the pFSM model in the multi-domain heterogeneous optical network environment.

Abstract:Multi-layer and multi-domain optical networks have drawn much attention in current research, and the wavelength switched optical network (WSON) is viewed as one of the best solutions in optical networks. In this paper, a novel Cooperative Control and Management Framework (CCMF) in multi-domain WSON is proposed to support the arising intelligent applications and optimize resource utilization with more scalability and robustness. In CCMF, we focus on the mechanism with the consideration of requirements of intelligent applications with complex flows, performance guarantees and traffic engineering in a traditional optical network. Thus, a combined provisioning approach, synergetic between the control plane (CP) and the management plane (MP), is presented with the policy based management system, in which a mobile agent is introduced to support the communication between MP and CP. Furthermore, one application, a novel multi-domain impairment aware routing and wavelength assignment (MIA-RWA) algorithm at the Bit Error Rate level, based on the proposed CCMF, is presented. It is proposed to improve the routing performance in multi-domain WSON. Finally, comprehensive simulations are conduced to verify the effectiveness of CCMF and the proposed mechanisms.

Abstract:With the evolution of traditional static optical networks towards dynamic and intelligent optical networks, the dynamic characteristics play a very important role in networks. Some control and manage strategies, routing algorithms and feasible signaling methods in limited network scales degenerate while the networks scale up. The scalabilities of optical networks become a hot topic in research. The dynamic characteristics and scalabilities both meet the request of network development while there was a tradeoff between dynamic characteristics and scalabilities in optical network engineering. A hierarchical and multi-domain architecture can help dealing with the problem. This architecture is a possible solution to actualize a scalable optical network with better dynamic characteristics and more intelligence.

Abstract:The rapid growth of the network traffic and the diversity of the network requirements bring network service providers new demands and challenges. In order to achieve better efficiency and resource utilization, we need to solve the problems caused by the heterogeneous network environment, such as the low resource utilization and the control and management collaboration problem of heterogeneous networks. The promotion of the software-defined network concept brings the network operators a new way of thinking to solve the problem caused by heterogeneous network environment, especially the convergence of packet and optical network. We propose a control architecture for packet and optical network convergence, including how to be compatible with the existing optical network control architecture. A series of network performance parameters have been demonstrated under various network environments on our testbed.

Abstract:The exponential growth in emerging applications in datacenters leads to significant increases in traffic and bandwidth consumption in datacenter networks. Fine-grained optical switching technology can provide low-latency end-to-end connection with flexible granularity in intra-data-center networks. In such a scheme, the centralized network controller will compute an end-to-end path and provide switch state commands for each connection request. However, as network scale and traffic requirements continually increase, the centralized controller will face a significant challenge in low-latency end-to-end connection provisioning under a heavy traffic load. Limited by the controller's computation and processing performance, the continuously arriving connection requests may block the server's message queue and slow down the controller's processing rate. In this paper, we propose a multi-controller control scheme for fine-grained all-optical datacenter networks. We take optical time slice switching as an example of fine-grained all-optical switching to illustrate our detailed control scheme. Partitioning rules for the network and controllers' responsibilities, the routing algorithm, and the signaling process are also discussed. The proposed multi-controller control scheme can greatly reduce each controller's computation and processing burden and improve network performance. Dynamic datacenter network emulations are launched to verify our proposed scheme. The emulation results indicate that the multi-controller scheme can reduce connection setup delays and request and data failure rates, while the single controller fails to handle all the requests.

Abstract:A Dynamic clustering scheme based on coordination of management and control is proposed to reduce network congestion rate and improve the blocking performance of hierarchical routing in Multi-layer and Multi-region intelligent optical network. Its implement relies on mobile agent (MA) technology, which has the advantages of efficiency, flexibility, functional and scalability. The paper's major contribution is to adjust dynamically domain when the performance of working network isn't in ideal status. And the incorporation of centralized NMS and distributed MA control technology migrate computing process to control plane node which releases the burden of NMS and improves process efficiently. Experiments are conducted on Multi-layer and multi-region Simulation Platform for Optical Network (MSPON) to assess the performance of the scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, we put forward an integrated traffic control structure and the associated control laws for multidomain networks. This control structure performs per-edge-to-edge-based multinext-hop or multipath rate adaptation and load balancing among domain edge nodes in a multidomain network. This control structure is underpinned by a large family of distributed control laws, with provable convergence and optimality properties. With any user-defined global design objective, a set of control laws can be selected from this family of control laws that track an operational point where the global design objective is achieved, while providing traffic engineering (TE) and fast failure recovery (FFR) features for class-of-service (CoS)-aware flow aggregates. The structure allows the user to have full control over how the domains should be created and whether to use point-to-multipoint and/or point-to-point multipath. The flexibility and versatility of the control structure makes it an ideal theoretical underpinning for the development of integrated traffic control solutions for large-scale networking systems, in particular, software-defined networks in which the data plane is fully programmable via a well-defined south-bound interface, such as OpenFlow. The simulation testing demonstrates the viability of the solution in providing TE, FFR, and CoS features.

Abstract:A domain-level gradient-based routing (DLR) algorithm for heterogeneous optical networks with synchronous digital hierarchy and optical transport network domains is proposed and experimentally validated. This algorithm classifies domains into groups with incremental levels on the basis of domain-level partitioning, and guides paths level by level along a gradient on the basis of interdomain routing tree evolution. The proposed algorithm is implemented in the hierarchical path computation element-based control architecture for connection provisioning. Testbeds with commercial and emulated nodes are established to verify the feasibility and performance of the algorithm. Experimental and emulation results show that DLR effectively performs in terms of network blocking probability, real time characteristics, and scalability.

Abstract:We propose a semicentralized semidistributed network architecture based on active stateful path computation elements (PCEs) to intelligently provide end-to-end inter-domain connections in multi-domain optical transport networks supplied by different equipment vendors. A novel control entity, called an inter-domain communication control and management element (ICCME), is introduced into the architecture to achieve flexible distributed interdomain control and centralized intra-domain management by integrating with "proactive" and "reactive" stateful capabilities. Inter-domain routing and signaling are completed with the collaboration of multiple ICCMEs in a peer-to-peer manner, which decentralizes highly intensive computation and signaling to multiple ICCMEs. In addition, we put forward a unified inter-domain communication protocol to eliminate the differences in private signaling message formats of various vendors' domains. We report a successful field trial of providing inter-domain connections across a commercial three-domain three-vendor optical transport network. Also, experimental results indicate that ICCME-based architecture performs better than previous schemes in terms of scalability, i.e., low average routing load of control entities and low average delay in establishing interdomain connections, but results in higher message overhead and blocking probability.

Abstract:The rise of big data and cloud computing applications is driving an explosion in the growth of data centers (DCs), and is already resulting in networking bottlenecks and performance degradation. The size and capacity of DCs are being constrained by the traditional packet-based switching architectures due to high energy consumption.Introducing optical circuit switching (OCS) into the packet-based switching architectures becomes a promising solution to reduce energy consumption in future large-scale high-capacity DC networks. Current fiber/wavelength-switching-based OCS, however, requires each lightpath to occupy the full bandwidth of a fiber/wavelength, leading to coarse switching granularity, low bandwidth utilization, and weak scalability. In order to raise bandwidth utilization in high-capacity DC networks, we proposed and realized a novel hybrid packet/fine-grained optical switching architecture in a prototype DC test bed. In this architecture, optical time slice switching (OTSS) is used for sub-wavelength optical switching in the temporal domain. With high-precision time synchronization and accurate control of optical switches, ultra-fine switching granularity and much higher bandwidth utilization can be achieved. Similar to the spectrum fragments in spectrum-sliced elastic optical switching networks, time slot fragments exist in OTSS networks, which hinder the improvement of bandwidth utilization. In this work, we propose a new overlay hybrid packet/OTSS DC network architecture to get full utilization of time slot fragments. Compared with the peer-to-peer hybrid packet/OTSS architecture, the overlay architecture achieves better bandwidth utilization.

Abstract:Aiming at providing united control of multi-domain optical networks orchestration, we design the Federated Platform based on Open Network Operating System (ONOS). Our implementation includes adding and extending modules in ONOS to provide the global view of multi-domain networks and support cross-domain end-to-end services by communicating with the individual domain controllers through RESTCONF protocol. It illustrates the feasibility of the proposed architecture through analyzing the construction of the platform and the functional testing data.
Novel Architecture of Multi-Granularity OXC Combining Static and Dynamic Photonic Switching

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed a novel architecture of MG-OXC (Multi-Granularity Optical Cross Connect) that can support both the static and dynamic optical switching. It can obviously reduce the complexity of the switching matrix and the number of the switching ports without increasing the network blocking probability. We gave the ILP model to describe the multi-granularity switching optical network. This model is applicable not only to the novel MG-OXC, but also to the traditional MG-OXC network. We also proposed a novel routing and wavelength assignment algorithm for dealing with multi-granularity traffic in optical network that was set up by this kind of novel MG-OXC. It is shown that when the network load is low, the network blocking probability of the novel MG-OXC will be quite lower than the ordinary multi-layer and single-layer MG-OXC with the strategy of the shortest wavelength path and random choice of the wavelength. While when the network load is comparatively higher, the network blocking probabilities of these structures are more or less the same.
