Abstract:With the evolution of traditional static optical networks towards dynamic and intelligent optical networks, the dynamic characteristics play a very important role in networks. Some control and manage strategies, routing algorithms and feasible signaling methods in limited network scales degenerate while the networks scale up. The scalabilities of optical networks become a hot topic in research. The dynamic characteristics and scalabilities both meet the request of network development while there was a tradeoff between dynamic characteristics and scalabilities in optical network engineering. A hierarchical and multi-domain architecture can help dealing with the problem. This architecture is a possible solution to actualize a scalable optical network with better dynamic characteristics and more intelligence.

Abstract:The coexistence of different types of equipment in an optical network makes the network complex and heterogeneous.If interconnection has not been realized,bottlenecks can occur that constrain the further development of the network.This article highlights control and internetworking problems in heterogeneous high-capacity optical networks.New technologies are introduced,including a novel centralized-distributed-mixed management and control architecture for large-scale heterogeneous optical networks,a K random-paths routing technology,an outer-ring based multi-domain topology,and an immediate re-routing signaling technology.Results of experiments carried out on our recently established heterogeneous network test-bed are also given.

Abstract:To meet diverse, bandwidth-intensive applications envisioned in future optical networks, as well as address the shortcomings of the current Internet, novel networking technologies will be of great importance. We discuss several key issues for the future Internet, including network virtualization mechanisms, a programmable network architecture, parallelism of optical transmission, and guaranteed quality of service provisioning. Moreover, a new type of virtualized optical substrate architecture is proposed that utilizes optical orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), along with subwavelength switching and generic packet routing to realize the network bandwidth programmability. The main features, benefits, and design and implementation challenges of optical OFDMA networking based on sliceable routers are also described. Finally, an adaptive subcarrier allocation and assignment algorithm for future OFDMA-based networking is investigated, and a performance comparison between the proposed approach and legacy time division multiple access (TDMA)-based techniques is drawn.

Abstract:The evolution of optical networks is enabled by both technological and architectural advances with the goal of reducing operational and capital expenditure per transmitted bit. While the former one stimulates significant system capacity, the latter paves the way for reducing the effective traffic load in network so that more traffic can be carried. Accordingly, optical node architectures have been transitioning from optical-electrical-optical mode to all-optical one, leveraging the scalability and efficiency of fully optical cross-connecting. Conventional wisdom in designing and architecting such switching nodes is nevertheless rooted in the intuition that when an optical channel crossing an intermediate node, it should be maximally isolated from other optical channels in order to avoid interference which may result in degrading signal quality. Such long-established paradigm perceiving the interference of optical channels transiting at the same node as an adversarial factor and should therefore circumvent, albeit reasonable, may leave vast unexplored opportunities. Indeed, the rapid advances in all-optical signal processing technologies has brought opportunities to re-define the optical node architecture by upgrading its naive functionalities from simply add/drop and cross-connecting to proactively mixing optical channels in photonic domain. Specifically, all-optical channel aggregation and de-aggregation technologies have been remarkably advancing in recent years, permitting two or more optical channels at lower bit-rate and/or modulation formats could be all-optically aggregated to a single channel of higher-rate and/or higher-order modulation format and vice versa. Such evolutionary technique is poised to disrupt the existing ecosystem for optical network design and planning, and thus necessitates for a radical change to unlock new potentials. To that end, this paper presents a new paradigm for future optical networks, namely, optical-processing-enabled networks , which are powered by in-network all-optical mixing capability. We introduce the operational principle of optical channel aggregation (de-aggregation) and show how spectrally beneficial such innovative operations could yield by an illustrative example. Next, in order to maximize the aggregation opportunity, we present a mathematical model for optimal routing based on integer linear programming model. Numerical results on the realistic network topology COST239 are provided to quantify the spectral gain of aggregation-aware routing compared to the conventional one.

Abstract:With the double growth of Internet traffic every six months, data exceeding voice traffic is only a problem of time, so, the network based on circuit switching will evolve to network based on packet switching unavoidably. But as for optical Internet, because of lacking of optical logical devices and optical buffer, very high bit-rate all-optical packet switching is difficult to realize. On the other hand, the new propose, optical burst switching, is simple compared to optical packet switching, and has better performance, thus, OBS is the prefered we think. We introduce the studying state-of-the-art of optical packet switching and optical burst switching, compare their characteristics and at last, point out the possible directions of OBS.

Abstract:The exponential growth of Internet traffic necessitates high-capacity optical networks and has also highlighted the importance of bandwidth-flexible and multi-granularity transport platforms. Improving both transport capacity and bandwidth flexibility is a significant challenge in optical networks. A bitrate flexible network architecture that is based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing has been proposed as a promising solution for meeting this challenge. In the current study, we focus on the online routing and spectrum assignment problems in the aforementioned network architecture and introduce a general solution for dynamic bitrate flexible traffic in distributed environments. A novel spectrum representation method based on continuous spectrum segments is introduced into the networks. Segment-based routing and signaling mechanisms provide general solutions that support both the conventional slot-based networks and the ideal fully gridless networks. The routing algorithms and spectrum selection approaches are demonstrated and compared in a simulation. Performance estimation indicates that random spectrum segment assignment achieves the lowest capacity blocking rate in light traffic, whereas the adaptive routing plus minimum residual spectrum scheme obtains the lowest capacity blocking rate under heavy traffic.

Abstract:Under the current and foreseeable limitations of optical technology, performance of the next generation optical network is mainly hampered at the network node by resource contention. Existing work addresses contention resolution mostly in the wavelength domain (as wavelength conversion, WC), the time domain (buffering by using fiber delay lines, FDLs, the space domain (as deflection routing), and the burst domain (as segmentation). In this paper, a new architecture of optical networks-the server view based on optical networks is proposed. From the point of this new architecture, the network can be modeled as a server system with three type servers-the access server, the node server and the link server. The network performances such as cost, energy consume and network capacity can be affected by the capability of these three type servers. Unlike existing research activities that are focused on the node server design, we present the Dual fiber link (the link server solution) and IP calking (the access server solution) to ease the resource contention. To evaluate the performance of the proposed methods, computer simulations are conducted. The simulation results show these solutions can reduce the contention effectively with existing commercial devices.

Abstract:Relying on the flexible-access interconnects to the scalable storage and compute resources, data centers deliver critical communications connectivity among numerous servers to support the housed applications and services. To provide the high-speeds and long-distance communications, the data centers have turned to fiber interconnections. With the stringently increased traffic volume, the data centers are then expected to further deploy the optical switches into the systems infrastructure to implement the full optical switching. This paper first summarizes the topologies and traffic characteristics in data centers and analyzes the reasons and importance of moving to optical switching. Recent techniques related to the optical switching, and main challenges limiting the practical deployments of optical switches in data centers are also summarized and reported.

Hybrid Packet/Fine-Grained-Optical Switching Architectures for Future Large-Scale Data Center Networks

Abstract:The rise of big data and cloud computing applications is driving an explosion in the growth of data centers (DCs), and is already resulting in networking bottlenecks and performance degradation. The size and capacity of DCs are being constrained by the traditional packet-based switching architectures due to high energy consumption.Introducing optical circuit switching (OCS) into the packet-based switching architectures becomes a promising solution to reduce energy consumption in future large-scale high-capacity DC networks. Current fiber/wavelength-switching-based OCS, however, requires each lightpath to occupy the full bandwidth of a fiber/wavelength, leading to coarse switching granularity, low bandwidth utilization, and weak scalability. In order to raise bandwidth utilization in high-capacity DC networks, we proposed and realized a novel hybrid packet/fine-grained optical switching architecture in a prototype DC test bed. In this architecture, optical time slice switching (OTSS) is used for sub-wavelength optical switching in the temporal domain. With high-precision time synchronization and accurate control of optical switches, ultra-fine switching granularity and much higher bandwidth utilization can be achieved. Similar to the spectrum fragments in spectrum-sliced elastic optical switching networks, time slot fragments exist in OTSS networks, which hinder the improvement of bandwidth utilization. In this work, we propose a new overlay hybrid packet/OTSS DC network architecture to get full utilization of time slot fragments. Compared with the peer-to-peer hybrid packet/OTSS architecture, the overlay architecture achieves better bandwidth utilization.

Abstract:The communication requirements imposed by the unabated growth in both the size and computational density of modern data centers will soon outpace the fundamental capabilities of conventional electronic interconnection networks. Optical interconnects represent a potentially disruptive technology that can simultaneously satisfy the throughput, latency, and energy demands of these next-generation systems. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end photonic networking platform for future optically-interconnected data center networks. A reconfigurable hybrid photonic network building block and a protocol-agnostic optical network interface comprise the key elements of our proposed system. A modular optical switch fabric prototyping platform is designed and implemented to support a wide variety of potential photonic technologies. We successfully demonstrate nanosecond-scale optical packet-switching at 1-Tb/s per port (40-Gb/s ×25λs) through our prototype, configured as a 4×4 switch, and confirm error-free transmission across all wavelengths. In order to flexibly allocate appropriate bandwidth for heterogeneous applications, we further implement and evaluate a novel wavelength-reconfigurable optical packet- and circuit-switch by utilizing our optical switch platform. Finally, we detail our implementation of an optical network interface card (O-NIC) designed to bridge the gap between the well-established protocol layers utilized in current networks and the physical layer of the proposed photonic networks and demonstrate its functionality by the streaming of high-definition video through the end-to-end optical network.

Optical switches can be applied in optical cross connects and optical add/drop multiplexing, etc. In this paper, many kinds of manufacture technologies are presented, including micro-opto-electro-mechanical-system, liquid crystals, holograms, liquid gratings, bubbles, and acousto-optics. Abstract:As one of the promising solutions for conveying high-bandwidth and low-latency services such as 5G, optical access networks face severe security challenges due to their tree-based topology and broadcast characteristics in downstream transmission. Even though physical-layer security mechanisms leverage the advantages of flexible implementation, low complexity, and full information confidentiality, these security enhancement schemes based on digital signal processing techniques are limited by the electrical bottleneck, leading to low processing speed for encryption and incapability of effectively detecting network attacks. In this article, we first discuss the potential security threats and present several existing solutions against security threats in optical access networks from the perspective of the medium access control and physical layers. We then elaborate novel optical-layer solutions based on optical signal processing techniques including all-optical encryption, optical layer authentication, and optical domain intrusion detection mechanisms. In particular, numerical simulation results have verified the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed solutions. Finally, we conclude this article and propose future challenges of security enhancement of optical access networks supporting 5G and beyond.

Abstract:Efforts in realizing all-optical packet switching are overwhelming in the past decade. While optical packet switching remains an attractive switching paradigm in the long run, technical challenges prohibit it from becoming a practical solution for the ever-growing bandwidth hunger during the next few years. Finding a technically viable way to meet the increasing capacity requirement with good scalability and flexibility becomes a clear pursue for the community. Hybrid packet and circuit switching is considered to be one promising technique in realizing high performance switching at low cost and less energy consumption, by taking the advantage of both packet switching and circuit switching. In this paper, we review existing work in hybrid optical packet and circuit switching. We discuss the key technical challenges in realizing hybrid optical packet and circuit switching. We further introduce our ongoing efforts in building a seamlessly transformable packet/circuit-switching node with hybrid optical and electronic components. We show that in a hybrid node, the scheduling complexity with typical scheduling algorithms may be reduced to half of a node running in full packet switching mode.
