Abstract:We propose and demonstrate an improved Ethernet passive optical network (EPON) architecture supporting bandwidth-scalable physical layer local area network (LAN) emulation. Due to the use of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) technology for the LAN traffic transmission, there is no need to change the existing EPON architecture. Only one receiver at each optical network unit (ONU) is required to detect both LAN traffic and EPON downstream traffic, which makes the proposed system simple and cost-effective. Moreover, flexible assignment of LAN traffic bandwidth is realized by allocating different number of subcarriers or using different modulation formats. The 250 Mb/s 4-quadrature amplitude modulation (4-QAM) and 500 Mb/s 16-QAM OFDM LAN traffic are successfully emulated with the EPON traffic in our experiment. © 2011 Elsevier Inc. Abstract:We propose a spectral efficient radio over wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system by combining optical polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and wireless multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing techniques. In our experiment, a training-based zero forcing (ZF) channel estimation algorithm is designed to compensate the polarization rotation and wireless multipath fading. A 797 Mb/s net data rate QPSK-OFDM signal with error free (<1 × 10(5)) performance and a 1.59 Gb/s net data rate 16QAM-OFDM signal with BER performance of 1.2 × 10(2) are achieved after transmission of 22.8 km single mode fiber followed by 3 m and 1 m air distances, respectively.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel WDM-PON architecture to support efficient and bandwidth-scalable virtual private network (VPN) emulation over both inter-PON and intra-PON. The virtual ring link for the VPN communications among ONUs is realized by using additionally low-cost optical passive components and OFDMA technology. Moreover, the downstream traffic wavelength is reused for the upstream traffic signal by using re-modulation technology. We report on a successful transmission of 10.7 Gbps OOK upstream and 10.7 Gbps DPSK downstream, together with 1.25 Gbps 16-QAM OFDM VPN traffic, over 20 km no-zero dispersion shifted fiber (NZDSF).

Abstract:We demonstrate for the first time to the best of our knowledge an analogue orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based electrical code division multiplexing access (ECDMA) passive optical network (PON) for next generation access applications. Advantages of the system include low cost, high capacity, and enhanced spectral efficiency. A proof-of-principle 16 QAM OFDM ECDMA PON downlink experiment is used to show the transmission of an aggregate data rate of 24.8 Gb/s within an eight-user system. Transmission is achieved over 25 km of single-mode telecommunications fiber (SMF) with negligible dispersion and crosstalk penalties.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel WDM-ROF-PON architecture based on 16QAM-OFDM modulation for bidirectional access networks is proposed and demonstrated. We theoretically investigate the operating principle of the system, in our simulation, the intensity modulation of 10Gb/s 16-quadrature-amplitude-modulation (16-QAM) orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing (OFDM) signals are employed for downlink and the demodulated base-band signals are demonstrated, and the optical carrier is reused for uplink. Both the downstream and upstream signals have been transmitted over 40-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF-28) without optical dispersion compensation. Our theoretical analysis and numerical simulation results show the WDM-ROF-PON architecture will be a promising candidate in next generation optical networks.

Abstract:The introduction of OFDM into PON networks is to leverage the merits of OFDM to provide the flexibility and reduce the cost. In this paper, we present our latest works on OFDM-PON. Firstly, we propose and demonstrate a novel OFDM-PON upstream transmission architecture with traffic aggregation by orthogonal band multiplexing. The multiplexed 10Gb/s OFDM signal is collectively received. We also conduct a proof-of-concept experiment to verify the architecture. Secondly, we propose and experimentally demonstrate wavelet packet transform based OFDM (WPT-OFDM) using real-valued transforms, which enables the cost-effective intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD). Unlike conventional FFT-based OFDM, the need for cyclic prefix is eliminated due to the time-frequency localization properties of the wavelet.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel Passive Optical Network based on Optical Code Division Multiple Access (OCDMA-PON) is presented. The design of the Optical Line Terminator (OLT) and the Optical Network Unit (ONU) for the OCDMA-PON are studied in detail. The proposed OCDMA-PON combines the advantages of PON and OCDMA technology and it can be applied to an optical access network with full services on demand, such as internet protocol, video on demand, tele-presence and high quality audio. Compared to other multiple access technologies, the proposed OCDMA-PON provides more ONU and assembly flexibly for PON. We analyze in detail the scalability and system transmission performance of such a network. Simulation results indicate that the proposed scheme is feasible and that the novel design can improve the scalability and transmission performance of the optical access networks.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrated a novel passive optical network access architecture based on orbital angular momentum (OAM) multiplexing. Multiple data channels are multiplexed by orthogonal OAM modes on the same wavelength to achieve efficient utilization of bandwidth resources. Twenty OAM modes, with each mode carrying 10-Gb/s on-off keying signal, are transmitted over 0.4-m free-space optics link. The bit error ratio (BER) performances of all data channels can be under a 3.8 × 10-3 enhanced forward error correction limit. The experimental results show the potentiality of the proposed architecture for providing user access with flexibility and bandwidth efficiency in future ultrahigh-capacity passive optical networks.

Abstract:We demonstrate the feasibility of a 16 × 3.75 Gb/s (60 Gb/s aggregate) Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-code division multiple access passive optical network for next-generation access applications. 3.75 Gb/s PON channel transmission over 25 km single-mode fiber shows 0.1 dB dispersion and 0.9 dB crosstalk penalties. Advantages of the system include high capacity, enhanced spectral efficiency, coding gain, and networking functions such as increased security and single-wavelength operation.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel architecture for the SSB-ADM-based OFDM-PON system.Its downlink transmission is based on 10 Gbit/s SSB-based OFDM-4-QAM modulation,while the uplink transmission is based on 2.5 Gbit/s ASK modulation in the Time Division Multiple Access(TDMA) mode by using the other sideband retained in the downlink signals.This architecture can perfectly overcome the Rayleigh backscattering effect in the bidirectional transmission.When the backscattering effect is considered,the power penalty will be <0.8 dB for downlink signals and <1.8 dB for uplink signals.

Abstract:A novel hybrid WDM/TDM optical access network architecture called wavelength shared WDM PON and its media access control mode is proposed. The system is based on a two-stage distribution tree connecting OLT and ONUs.and uses ALOHA protocol for control channel and FIFO scheduler to efficiently assign bandwidth. The packet delay in the system is analyzed and the numerical results demonstrate that the system possesses well performance of packet delay.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a distance-adaptive bandwidth allocation scheme to realize high-capacity long-reach orthogonal frequency division multiple access passive optical network (OFDMA PON) with cost-effective electro-absorption modulator (EAM). In our scheme, the subcarriers in downstream OFDM signal are properly allocated to the optical network units (ONUs) with different fiber transmission lengths. By this means, the detrimental influence of power fading induced by dispersion and chirp can be avoided, thus all OFDM subcarriers can be modulated with high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) format, leading to a high transmission capacity. A proof-of-concept experiment is performed, in which three ONUs with transmission distances of 25, 50, and 100 km are assigned with different subcarriers, respectively. By using distance-adaptive bandwidth allocation technique, an OFDM signal of 34.5 Gb/s is successfully delivered to the ONUs with a bit error ratio (BER) lower than 2 × 10(-3).

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel wavelength-division-multiplexing orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing passive-optical-network (WDM-OFDM-PON) architecture with centralized lightwave sources and polarization shift keying (PolSK) multicast overlay. The 10-Gb/s 16QAM-OFDM point to point (P2P) signal, 2.5-Gb/s multicast PolSK signal and 2.5-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) upstream signal are experimentally demonstrated. After transmission over 25km standard single mode fiber (SMF), 1.5dB crosstalk between the downstream signals is eliminated by employing a low pass electrical filter at the PolSK receiver. The power penalty of the upstream OOK signal at BER of 10(-9) is less than 0.1dB.
