Abstract:The flows in which thermal process plays an important role are discussed using the analytical method. An approximate expression for the variation of the stream-pipe cross-section with the temperature is obtained. Some basic properties of the thermofluid flow are dealt with, such as the phenomenon that the streamlines will ''reject when heated and attract when cooled'' or ''attract when heated and reject when cooled'' under different heat transfer conditions and the deviation of the sonic point from the point of the smallest cross-section area of the stream-pipe.

Abstract:The present work discusses the characteristics of the thermal effects at microscale. The thermal effects are divided into two types, steady and unsteady. The unsteady thermal effect focuses on the thermal response of object during heating. It relies on the object thermal inertia. Thermal response phenomena have seldom application of practical uses in devises at conventional scale. However, the miniaturization in device size due to the development of the state-of-the-art technology makes it possible to utilize thermal responses due to its significantly reduced thermal inertia. The swift thermal response can be utilized in the designs of micro dual-layered metal membrane pumps, phase change pumps, polymerase chain reaction (PRC). For steady type the thermal effect in microchennels varies with the boundary conditions and flow parameters. The relative importance of different forces changes with the scale going down. The viscous dissipation and the work due to expansion may not be neglected for the convection inside a microchannel; the conduction in the wall has to be considered in the calculation of the Nusselt number for microchannel. The. relative importance of different heat transfer mode also varies with size. The natural convection presides over the heat transport inside a microchamber and the heat through an air gap by thermal radiation may exceed that by conduction at nanoscale. All the above mentioned variations make the heat transfer at microscale different from that at conventional scale.

Abstract:When implemented on the nanoscale, material flows driven by gradients in temperature, sometimes known as thermocapillary flows, can be exploited for various purposes, including nanopatterning, device fabrication, and purification of arrays of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs). Systematic experimental and theoretical studies on thermocapillary flow in thin polymer films driven by heating in individual metallic SWNT over a range of conditions and molecular weights reveal the underlying physics of this process. The findings suggest that the zero-shear viscosity is a critical parameter that dominates the dependence on substrate temperature and heating power. The experimentally validated analytical models in this study allow assessment of sensitivity to other parameters, such as the temperature coefficient of surface tension, the thermal interface conductance, and the characteristic length scale of the heated zone.

Abstract:In order to have deep insight on flow and thermal phenomena at micro/nano scale it is necessary to classify the physical mechanisms of the size effect on the flow and heat transfer into two groups a) the relative importance of factors varies which influence the flow and heat transfer as the characteristic length decreases, even if the continuum assumption is still valid; b) the continuum assumption breaks down as the characteristic length of the flow becomes comparable to the mean free path of the molecules. For the first group, the departure of most flow and thermal phenomena at microscale from conventional ones is because factors related to surface effects have more impact to the flow and heat transfer at small scales. Among these are: the surface friction induced flow compressibility, the surface roughness, the axial heat conduction in the wall, channel surface geometry, surface electrostatic charges, and measurement errors. For the second group, the incontinuity of fluid medium near the wall is the origin of the size effect on the flow and heat transfer. Molecular dynamics simulations show that velocity slips between of the gas flow in the nano channel are determined by fluid property, the Knudsen number, and by the surface roughness as well. In addition, molecular dynamics study indicates that bubble nucleation starts from the nanoscale low-density region in liquid, and only the fluid repulsive nanoparticle with a size close to the critical radius can enhance the bubble nucleation remarkably.

Abstract:This work discusses the interfacial effects on flow and heat transfer at micro/nano scale. Different from bulk cases where interfaces can be simply treated as a boundary, the interfacial effects are not limited to the interface at microscale but extend into a significant, even the whole domain of the flow and heat transfer field when the characteristic size of the domain is close to the mean free path (MFP) of fluid particles. Most of microscale flow phenomena result from interfacial interactions. Any changes in the interactions between the fluid and solid wall particles could affect the flow and heat transfer characteristics, such as flow and temperature profiles, friction coefficient. The interactions depend on many parameters, such as the force between fluid and solid wall particles, microstructure of interfaces. The flow and heat transfer features does not only depend on the fluid itself, but also on the interaction with the solid wall because the interface impact can go deep inside the flow. Same fluid, same channel shape but different wall materials could have different flow characters.

Abstract:The interfacial effects on flow and heat transfer on micro/nano scale are discussed in this paper. Most of microscale thermal phenomena result from interfacial interactions. Any changes in the interactions between the object and boundary particles, such as the force between fluid and solid wall particles, microstructure of interfaces, could affect thermal properties, flow and heat transfer characteristics and hence change thermal conductivity, velocity and temperature profiles, friction coefficient and thermal radiative properties, etc. The properties of nano-structure or flow and heat transfer features of fluid in micro/nanostructures not only depend on themselves, but also on the interaction with the interface because the interface impact can go deep inside the flow. The same fluid, same channel geometry but different wall materials could have different flow and heat transport characteristics on microscale.

Abstract:In this paper we study the effects of variable viscosity and thermal conductivity on the heat transfer in the pressure-driven fully developed flow of a slurry (suspension) between two horizontal flat plates. The fluid is assumed to be described by a constitutive relation for a generalized second grade fluid where the shear viscosity is a function of the shear rate, temperature and concentration. The heat flux vector for the slurry is assumed to follow a generalized form of the Fourier’s equation where the thermal conductivity k depends on the temperature as well as the shear rate. We numerically solve the governing equations of motion in the non-dimensional form and perform a parametric study to see the effects of various dimensionless numbers on the velocity, volume fraction and temperature profiles. The different cases of shear thinning and thickening, and the effect of the exponent in the Reynolds viscosity model, for the temperature variation in viscosity, are also considered. The results indicate that the variable thermal conductivity can play an important role in controlling the temperature variation in the flow.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the effects of variable thermal conductivity on the flow and heat transfer in a slag-type non-linear fluid down a vertical wall. The constitutive relation for the heat flux vector is assumed to be the Fourier's law of conduction with a variable thermal conductivity which includes the second order effects of the volume fraction. We numerically solve the non-dimensional form of the governing equations to study the effects of various dimensionless numbers on the velocity, temperature and volume fraction. The results indicate that the thermal conductivity plays a major role in the temperature distribution. Also, for certain values of the dimensionless numbers, minor differences are observed in the velocity and volume fraction distribution compared with the case of constant thermal conductivity.

Abstract:Thermal conduction between solid and fluid is crucial in cooling technology based on micro and nanofluidics, while the impact mechanism of flow on interfacial thermal transport is yet to be studied due to the absence of simulation models. In this work, we propose a model to investigate the effect of fluid flow on the thermal boundary conductance between solid and fluid using molecular dynamics simulations. The present results indicate that the best way to eliminate viscous temperature rise is to control temperature by excluding velocity components along the flow direction rather than removing average velocity. The thermal conduction is insensitive to the fluid flow in atomic-smooth channel, but highly depends on the flow velocity in rough channel, where the thermal boundary conductance decreases by 11.7% when flow velocity reaches 18 m/s. The results are attributed to the variations of flow field, where the rough morphologies will disturb the parallel flow of fluid and restrain the thermal vibration of interfacial fluid. This work reveals the influence of fluid flow on interfacial thermal exchange, and the proposed model and results are helpful to improve the cooling systems based on microfluidics.

Abstract:Nozzle flowmeter has simple structure and wide application. In order to study the influence of temperature change on the inner wall of nozzle flowmeter on the thermal effect of flowmeter, the thermal effect of nozzle flowmeter was numerically simulated at five different inner wall temperatures in this paper. It is found that with the increase of the inner wall temperature, obvious stress concentration occurs in the upstream and downstream pressure inlets and the inlet and outlet areas of the flowmeter, and the thermal stress increases with the increase of the wall temperature. There are large thermal deformation areas in the inlet and outlet areas of the upstream and downstream pressure inlets and the eight-slot nozzle, and the thermal deformation value increases with the increase of wall temperature.

Abstract:The physical mechanisms for the size effects on the flow and heat transfer have been divided into two classifications: (a) variations of the predominant factors influence the relative importance of various phenomena in the flow and heat transfer as the characteristic length decrease, even if the continuum assumption is still valid; (b) the continuum assumption breaks down as the characteristic length of the flow becomes comparable to the mean free path of the molecules. The departure of most flow and thermal phenomena in the MEMS from conventional ones is due to the variation of predominant factors in the flow and heat transfer problems, rather than that Navier-Stokes equation and Fourier heat conduction equation etc are no longer valid. Due to the larger surface to volume ratio for microchannels and microdevices, factors related to surface effects have more impact to microscale flow and heat transfer. For example, surface friction induced flow compressibility makes the fluid velocity profiles flatter and leads to higher friction factors and Nusselt numbers; surface roughness is likely responsible for the increased friction factor; the early transition from laminar to turbulent flow and Nusselt number; and other effects, such as the axial heat conduction in the channel wall, the channel surface geometry, surface electrostatic charges, and measurement errors, could lead to different flow and heat transfer behaviors from that at conventional scales. The condensation/evaporation across the liquid-vapor interface and the liquid-vapor nucleation are processes at nanometer scale. In these cases the macroscopic approach is hard to reveal the details at nanometer scales, while the molecular dynamic simulation is a powerful tool to describe such microscopic processes, and has been applied to investigate the density and temperature profiles across the liquid-vapor interface. The condensation coefficient on the liquid-vapor interface under thermodynamic equilibrium condition has been well predicted based on. the characteristic time method, which can distinguish the condensed particles from the reflected particles. Molecular dynamics simulations show that liquid-vapor nucleation undergoes three stages, namely, cavity growth, cavity coalescence and bubble formation.

Abstract:Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of liquid flow through the surface were performed to investigate the flow resistance and thermal resistance under conditions of different solid–liquid interactions and surface temperatures. A novel phenomenon was observed in the simulation, namely the rise of surface temperature increases the flow resistance when solid–liquid interaction is weak, but decreases the flow resistance when solid–liquid interaction is strong. A higher density of the boundary layer brings a larger friction force to increase the flow resistance. For heat transfer, it is innovative to calculate the heat conduction and convection of the boundary region discretely. The results showed that the heat transfer performance of the interface is not positively correlated with the boundary liquid density, and the structure of the boundary liquid is also crucial. We believe that this research can improve the existing theory of flow heat transfer and provide a more effective method for analyzing the flow heat transfer of the solid–liquid interface.

Abstract:The role of temperature gradient induced nanoparticle motion on conduction and convection was investigated. Possible mechanisms for variations resulting from variations in the thermophysical properties are theoretically and experimentally discussed. The effect of the nanoparticle motion on conduction is demonstrated through thermal conductivity measurement of deionized water with suspended CuO nanoparticles (50 nm in diameter) and correlated with the contributions of Brownian diffusion, thermophoresis, etc. The tendencies observed is that the magnitude of and the variation in the thermal conductivity increases with increasing volume fraction for a given temperature, which is due primarily to the Brownian diffusion of the nanoparticles. Using dimensional analysis, the thermal conductivity is correlated and both the interfacial thermal resistance and near-field radiation are found to be essentially negligible. A modification term that incorporates the contributions of Brownian motion and thermophoresis is proposed. The effect of nanoscale convection is illustrated through an experimental investigation that utilized fluorescent polystyrene nanoparticle tracers (200 nm in diameter) and multilayer nanoparticle image velocimetry. The results indicate that both the magnitude and the deviation of the fluid motion increased with increasing heat flux in the near-wall region. Meanwhile, the fluid motion tended to decrease with the off-wall distance for a given heating power. A corresponding numerical study of convection of pure deionized water shows that the velocity along the off-wall direction is several orders of magnitude lower than that of deionized water, which indicates that Brownian motion in the near-wall region is crucial for fluid with suspended nanoparticles in convection.
On Effects of Temperature Boundary Conditions on Heat Transfer in Turbulent Low-Prandtl-Number Flows

Abstract:Abstract One important issue in understanding and modeling of turbulent heat transfer is the behavior of fluctuating temperature close to the wall. Common engineering computational approach assumes constant heat flux boundary condition on heated walls. In the present paper constant heat flux boundary condition was assumed and effects of temperature fluctuations are investigated using large eddy simulations (LES) approach. A series of large eddy simulations for two geometries is performed: First, forced convection in channels and second, forced convection over a backward facing step. LES simulation data is statistically analyzed and compared with results of direct numerical simulations (DNS) from the literature which apply three cases of heat flux boundary conditions: 1. ideal heat flux boundary condition, 2. non-ideal heat flux boundary condition, 3. conjugate heat transfer boundary condition. For low Prandtl number flows LES results show that, despite very good agreement for velocities and mean temperature, predictions of temperature fluctuations may have strong deficiencies if simplified boundary conditions are applied.

Abstract:We present two-dimensional numerical investigations of the temperature and velocity evolution of a pure near-critical fluid confined in microchannels. The fluid is subjected to two sides heating after it reached isothermal steady state. We focus on the abnormal behaviors of the near-critical fluid in response to the sudden imposed heat flux. New thermal-mechanical effects dominated by fluid instability originating from the boundary and local equilibrium process are reported. Near the microchannel boundaries, the instability grows very quickly and an unexpected vortex formation mode is identified when near-critical thermal-mechanical effect is interacting with the microchannel shear flow. The mechanism of the new kind of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability induced by boundary expansion and density stratification processes is also discussed in detail. This mechanism may bring about innovations in the field of microengineering.

The size effects will lead to a departure of the flow and heat transfer correlations in microchannels from standard ones. The physical mechanism of the size effects, such as compressibility effect, surface roughness, dominant viscous force over initial force and surface electrostatic charges are analyzed.

Abstract:Motivation and objectives: The basic aim of this investigation is to explore the energy transfer impact on Eyring-Prandtl fluid, a topic that has not been previously examined, thereby paving the way for future researchers. The present literature is crucial for advancing thermal management in engineering applications. This study aims to numerically investigate the thermophoretic effects and Brownian motion of non-Newtonian nanofluid relying on Eyring-Prandtl fluid model across the stretching sheet. The sheet is along the vertical direction under applied magnetic field. Energy and mass transfer rate is explored by considering Joule heating, thermal radiations and chemical reaction effects. Significance: The increasing potential of Eyring-Prandtl fluid lies in its applications in heat and mass transfer. The current analysis holds significant promise, particularly in scenarios where non-Newtonian working fluids are utilized. This research aids in optimizing industrial processes, designing of efficient cooling systems in electronic devices, and in polymer and food processing. Methodology: The similarity transformations are utilized to turn a set of partial differential equations (PDEs) into a system of ordinary differential equation (ODE). The resulting system is modified and effectively solved by mean of numerical method known as the Runge Kutta method with bvp4c in MATLAB. Outcomes: Graphical results show the behavior of several physical parameters across boundary layers of buoyancy assisting and buoyancy opposing region. The magnetic field enhances the thermal conductance of the fluid flow that give rise to flow rate at the surface as well as within the boundary layers. The existing outcomes in the study are attained as a special case of current study. Eyring-Prandtl fluids, with their unique rheological properties can improve the design and efficiency of microfluidic systems used in various applications such as chemical synthesis, drug delivery, and biomedical diagnostics.

Abstract:An investigation of the thermal drag phenomena is conducted both analytically and experimentally. The existence of thermal drag gives rise to the decrease of both the mass flow rate and Mach number in the flow systems. Defining the thermal drag coefficient C(t) and dimensionless heating number He, an approximate correlation between them is obtained for one-dimensional, inviscid duct flow with simple heating. The dependence of the ratio of friction-caused pressure drop DELTA-P(f) to heating-caused DELTA-P(t) on the heating number is presented for turbulent duct flow, and clarifies the relative importance of the thermal drag to the viscous drag for different heating intensity.
