Abstract:Driven by fundamental thermodynamic efficiency considerations, an emerging trend in the energy and propulsion systems is that the working fluid operates at a pressure above the critical pressure. Energy transport is thus accompanied by dramatic and strongly nonlinear variations of thermophysical properties, which cause abnormal heat transfer behavior and non-ideal gas effects. This situation raises a crucial challenge for the heat exchanger and turbomachinery design, overall energy and exergy efficiency. We aim to provide a multi-scale overview of the flow and thermal behavior of fluid above the critical point: microscopic physics and macroscopic transport. Microscopic physics, i.e. near-critical thermophysical properties, phase transition and fluid dynamics, are introduced. A particular focus will be on the supercritical pseudo boiling process, which is a generalization of classical liquid-vapor phase transitions to non-equilibrium supercritical states. These new perspectives lead to a revised view of the state space. Further, recent results demonstrated the possibility of stable supercritical fluid interfaces without surface tension. On the macroscale, recent progress on the modeling of turbulent flow and convective heat transfer of supercritical fluids are summarized. Direct numerical simulation is able to offer insights into the physics of thermal fluids. We start with a description of fundamental fluid mechanics problems related to supercritical fluids. In addition, the heat transfer deterioration in supercritical fluids is found to be closely connected to the flow relaminarization by the non-uniform body-force. Finally, various modeling approaches such as recently developed advanced Reynolds-averaged turbulence modeling as well as machine-learning methods are summarized.

Abstract:The flows in which thermal process plays an important role are discussed using the analytical method. An approximate expression for the variation of the stream-pipe cross-section with the temperature is obtained. Some basic properties of the thermofluid flow are dealt with, such as the phenomenon that the streamlines will ''reject when heated and attract when cooled'' or ''attract when heated and reject when cooled'' under different heat transfer conditions and the deviation of the sonic point from the point of the smallest cross-section area of the stream-pipe.

Abstract:A unified treatment of general fluid thermodynamics is developed to handle fluid flows over their entire thermodynamic states. The analysis is based on the concepts of partial-mass and partial-density properties, and accommodates thermodynamic non-idealities and transport anomalies in the transcritical regime. The resultant routine is incorporated into a preconditioning scheme. All the thermophysical properties and numerical Jacobian matrices are derived directly from fundamental thermodynamic theories, rendering a robust algorithm valid for fluid flows at all speeds and at all thermodynamic states. As a specific example, a modified Soave–Redlich–Kwong equation of state is employed to obtain the fluid p–V–T properties. Several test cases concerning supercritical droplet vaporization in both quiescent and convective environments are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the present algorithm.

Abstract:In the present work, a three-dimensional fictitious domain method for particulate flows with heat transfer is proposed. For the case of fixed particle temperature, an iterative scheme for the temperature Lagrange multiplier is proposed, in order to determine its initial value and overcome the spurious oscillation of the explicit scheme at the initial time stage for different initial fluid and particle temperatures. Both explicit and implicit schemes are proposed for the solution of coupled fluid and solid temperature equations in the case of freely evolving particle temperature. The implicit scheme is suited to the case of large density ratios, specific heat ratios, or thermal conductivity ratios. Our method for the case of fixed particle temperature is verified via the test problems of a stationary hot sphere heating the surrounding quiescent fluid, a fixed sphere, and spheroid, respectively, in uniform flow, and sedimentation of a sphere and spheroid, respectively, in a vertical channel. We propose a new correlation of particle Nusselt number for an isolated sphere in a relatively small domain. Our code for the case of varying particle temperatures is verified via the effective thermal conductivity of a motionless sphere and the rising of a catalyst particle in an enclosure. Our method is applied to the sedimentation of a sphere at different Grashof numbers, specific heat ratios, and conductivity ratios. In addition, some preliminary results on heat transfer in turbulent channel flows laden with neutrally buoyant spherical and spheroidal particles, respectively, from fully resolved simulations with our method are reported.

Abstract:<p>Thermodynamics is a science concerning the state of a system, whether it is stable, metastable or unstable, when interacting with the surroundings. In this overview, fundamentals of thermodynamics are briefly reviewed through the integration of first and second laws of thermodynamics for open and nonequilibrium systems to demonstrate that the reversible equilibrium and irreversible nonequilibrium thermodynamics can be integrated to enhance the power and utilities of thermodynamics. The recent progresses in computational thermodynamics, the remaining challenges, and potential impacts in broad scientific fields are discussed. It is shown that computational thermodynamics enables the modeling of thermodynamics of a state as a function of both external and internal variables and enables quantitative calculations of a broad range of properties of a multicomponent system in terms of first and second derivatives of energy, including not only equilibrium states when there are no driving forces for any internal processes and but also non-equilibrium states with driving forces for internal processes. Consequently, external constraints such as fixed strain and internal degree of freedoms such as ordering and defects can be described in a coherent framework and applied to materials design. Furthermore, two important but largely overlooked aspects in thermodynamics will be discussed, i.e. the rigorous application of statistical thermodynamics with the probability of configurations and their contributions to system properties, and the applications of second derivatives of energy with respect to either two extensive variables or two potentials or a mixture of them in terms of understanding and predicting emergent behaviors, critical phenomena, kinetic coefficients, and mechanical properties.</p>

Abstract:A new generation of efficient heat transfer and cooling technologies has been studied by researchers since the 1990s due to the rise of nanotechnology. In 1995, Professor S.U.S. The idea of 'nanofluids' was first proposed by Choi from the Aragon National Laboratory in the United States, which combines nanotechnology with traditional thermal engineering in an innovative way. Enhanced heat transfer is a field where nanofluid technology has broad application prospects and potential significant economic value, and is known as the 'future cooling and heat dissipation technology'. The theme of this article is the principles, preparation processes, and application fields of micro-nano fluids. The research on nanofluids still needs to be carried out. Due to their unique thermal conductivity properties, they can theoretically be widely used in fields such as industry, energy, aerospace, automobiles, air conditioning and refrigeration, electronics, etc. The aim of this study is to examine the heat conduction principle of nanofluids, the basic preparation process, and some applications of nanofluids in the field of enhanced heat conduction.
Development of a New Heat Transfer Optimization Method for Compressible Fluid Flows and It Numerical Verifications

Abstract:A general optimization criterion for heat transfer process is developed based on the entransy theory. Then, a modified field synergy principle for compressible viscous fluid, which represents the irreversibility of the specific heat transfer processes, is discussed. Modified field synergy equations are set up and theoretically, the solution of the modified field synergy equations under the constraint conditions of a given mean kinetic energy is able to show the optimal flow field, in which the amount of heat transfer is maximized. In the study, a numerical simulation of the heat transfer processes of air in a cavity is selected as the numerical verification of the modified field synergy equations. Numerical simulation results show that asymmetric vortices are generated in the flow field due to the variation of the density. These vortices enhance the heat transfer performance in the absence of too much work dissipation. Comparisons among the results of the Navier Stokes equations, the existed laminar field synergy equations, and the modified field synergy equations are made. The results confirm that the equations developed in this study correspond to the best heat-transfer performance when the density of fluid changes with temperature or pressure. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. Nanofluid two-phase flow and thermal physics: a new research frontier of nanotechnology and its challenges

Abstract:Nanofluids are a new class of fluids engineered by dispersing nanometer-size solid particles in base fluids. As a new research frontier, nanofluid two-phase flow and thermal physics have the potential to improve heat transfer and energy efficiency in thermal management systems for many applications, such as microelectronics, power electronics, transportation, nuclear engineering, heat pipes, refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat pump systems. So far, the study of nanofluid two-phase flow and thermal physics is still in its infancy. This field of research provides many opportunities to study new frontiers but also poses great challenges. To summarize the current status of research in this newly developing interdisciplinary field and to identify the future research needs as well, this paper focuses on presenting a comprehensive review of nucleate pool boiling, flow boiling, critical heat flux, condensation and two-phase flow of nanofluids. Even for the limited studies done so far, there are some controversies. Conclusions and contradictions on the available nanofluid studies on physical properties, two-phase flow, heat transfer and critical heat flux (CHF) are presented. Based on a comprehensive analysis, it has been realized that the physical properties of nanofluids such as surface tension, liquid thermal conductivity, viscosity and density have significant effects on the nanofluid two-phase flow and heat transfer characteristics but the lack of the accurate knowledge of these physical properties has greatly limited the study in this interdisciplinary field. Therefore, effort should be made to contribute to the physical property database of nanofluids as a first priority. Secondly, in particular, research on nanofluid two-phase flow and heat transfer in microchannels should be emphasized in the future.

Abstract:The classical heat transfer theory is established on the empirical models of Fourier's heat conduction law and Newton's cooling law. Although the classical theory has been successfully used in a wide range of industrial engineering applications, it lacks deep understanding of the physical mechanisms for energy transport and analytical methodology based on solid mathematical and mechanical principles. The rapid development of modern science and technology challenges the traditional heat transfer theory in two aspects: (1) Fourier's law of heat conduction is no longer valid under the ultra-fast laser heating or nanoscale conditions; (2) The optimization principle minimizing entropy generation is not suitable for heat transfer problems without heat to work conversion. In order to solve the first challenge, we re-examined the nature of heat and introduced new physical quantities, such as thermomass, thermomass velocity, thermomass energy. Then the heat transfer problems can be analyzed in the framework of vectorial fluid mechanics, and the thermomass momentum conservation equation has been established and known as a general law of heat transfer. For the second challenge, we introduced new physical quantities, entransy and entransy dissipation, by analogy between the heat conduction process and the electric conduction process. Unlike entropy as the core physical quantity in thermodynamics dealing with energy conversion, entransy is the quantity to represent the ability of heat transfer in an incompressible system. The entransy dissipation represents the irreversibility of heat transfer process. On this basis, the least action principle to minimize entransy dissipation can be used to optimize the heat transfer process and enhance energy efficiency. Because the physical essence of entransy is the thermomass potential energy, the entransy-based variational method is actually the energy method in heat transfer. All the new physical quantities, principles and methods form a new and independent knowledge system in heat transfer, which may be named "Physical heat transfer".
Thermal Relaxation and Critical Instability of Near-Critical Fluid Microchannel Flow.

Abstract:We present two-dimensional numerical investigations of the temperature and velocity evolution of a pure near-critical fluid confined in microchannels. The fluid is subjected to two sides heating after it reached isothermal steady state. We focus on the abnormal behaviors of the near-critical fluid in response to the sudden imposed heat flux. New thermal-mechanical effects dominated by fluid instability originating from the boundary and local equilibrium process are reported. Near the microchannel boundaries, the instability grows very quickly and an unexpected vortex formation mode is identified when near-critical thermal-mechanical effect is interacting with the microchannel shear flow. The mechanism of the new kind of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability induced by boundary expansion and density stratification processes is also discussed in detail. This mechanism may bring about innovations in the field of microengineering.

Abstract:In the last decades, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations established as an important tool for solving fluid flow and heat transfer problems at the nanoscale, with a significant perspective impact on a wide range of industrial and scientific applications. As usual, this happened with several scholarly papers on this topic being published in the same period. The present article provides a thorough review of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations in the domain of fluid flow and heat transfer. In the first section, a survey of the physical modelling of heat transfer phenomena by MD simulations is presented, focusing on bubble and droplet nucleation and interfacial thermal behaviours. Subsequently, MD simulations of fluid flow and heat transfer in nanochannels are discussed, including adiabatic flow, convective heat transfer, and two-phase flow. Particular emphasis was placed on critical phenomena such as evaporation and condensation, to assess the effects of confinement within nanochannels. Finally, some of the current and emerging challenges in MD simulations and suggests future research directions are discussed.

Relativistic dynamics of the motion of heat

Abstract:The motion of heat can be described by a thermal energy–momentum tensor. A general description of heat conduction in the geometrical language is developed based on a two-phase continuum model within the framework of relativistic continuum dynamics, and the momentum balance equation of heat, or the general heat conduction equation (GHCE), is derived by the balance equation of the thermal energy–momentum tensor. We demonstrate that the low-speed limit of the GHCE coincides the former version of GHCE of the thermomass theory that is based on the energy–mass equivalence and Newtonian dynamics. Numerical solutions of the GHCE are also provided to demonstrate that the GHCE not only overcomes the paradox of instantaneous heat propagation of the Fourier’s law, but also resolves the defect of the CV model that temperatures may drop below absolute zero under some conditions. The present work formulates a general description of the thermal transport processes, and can provide a deeper insight into the heat transfer discipline from the relativistic point of view.

Abstract:Thermodynamic systems play an inestimable role in engineering applications. With the rising demands for information and automation in operation and maintenance in thermodynamic systems, the essential technologies of operation management have been quickly advancing in recent years. It is challenging to direct engineers to choose a focused strategy to accomplish effective matching between the rich monitoring information, experiential knowledge, and practical applications given the variety of thermodynamic technologies now available and suggested for distinct functional requirements. The limited adaptability of field applications is further hampered by the low compatibility between the current technologies and engineering backgrounds. The detailed technical advancements and drawbacks of managing thermodynamic systems using dynamic modeling, performance simulation, system control, fault detection, and isolation were summarized in this paper. There is a thorough comparison and analysis of the traits and adaptability of various technologies, a thorough discussion of the technical shortcomings impeding engineering applications, and some fresh suggestions for future advancement. These studies primarily focus on the use of advanced dynamic modeling techniques, effective performance simulation approaches, precise operating control schemes, and sophisticated defect detection algorithms to increase the reliability, automation, and informationalization of engineering decision-making. It supports the information development of knowledge-intensive thermodynamic systems toward human–computer intelligent interaction by providing scientific basis, improvement direction, and unique additions to contemporary research for engineers and researchers. Additionally, it offers certain focused strategies for effectively resolving technical issues.

Abstract:Variable property effects on vertical channel natural convection in air are studied systematically. Numerical solutions of the governing equations show that both the mass flow rate and heat transfer in the channel are not only lower than the constant property results, but also show a nonmonotonic variation with increasing wall temperature or wall heat flux. This phenomenon, which seemingly conflicts with the conventional knowledge, has also been identified by experiments. For a vertical channel with a uniform heat flux boundary condition, the wall may experience a sharp rise in temperature up to damage of the channel if the wall heat flux is greater than the critical heat flux. This implies that the crisis phenomenon (or burnout) may occur in channel natural convection in gas as well as in the boiling process.

Abstract:Addressing the growing severe heat-generation and temperature-rise issues of the civil aircraft hydraulic system, this paper proposes a thermal dynamic model and thermal management strategies for the system within full mission profile. Firstly, a new thermal dynamic modeling towards general hydraulic components is conducted. Secondly, thermal dynamic governing equations are derived. Then a thermal management mechanism of the system is proposed. The conducted research is prerequisite to future numerical simulation of the thermal dynamic characteristics, evaluation and improvement of thermal management strategies for the system.

Abstract:The temperature field and heat transfer for fluid flow around the heating solid spheres in tandem have been measured by laser holographic interferometry together with an infrared scanning technique. The heat transfer characteristics for heating solid spheres with equal or unequal diameters as affected by various parameters such as Re, ΔT, x and d2d1, are obtained experimentally in detail. The numerical simulation has been made to predict conditions of constant and variable physical properties. The numerical results are quite close to the experimental ones, and show that more systematic and audio-visual results can be obtained.

Abstract:Extended from its electromagnetic counterpart [1,2], transformation thermodynamics applied to thermal conduction equations can map a virtual geometry into a physical thermal medium, realizing the manipulation of heat flux with almost arbitrarily desired diffusion paths, which provides unprecedented opportunities to create thermal devices unconceivable or deemed impossible before [3,4]. In this talk we report our recent work on manipulation of transient heat flux employing this technique and showed two thermal devices: a heat flux cloak and an efficient plate heater. In the cloaking device we will show that heat flux can be guided by a transformed medium to flow around a vacuum obstacle and restore its diffusion direction as if nothing inhomogeneous exists in their trajectories [5]. In the second experiment we design an efficient plate heater that can transiently achieve a large surface of uniform temperature powered by a small thermal source [6]. As opposed to the traditional approach of relying on the deployment of a resistor network, our approach fully takes advantage of an advanced functional material system to guide the heat flux to achieve the desired temperature heating profile. Our research results are good examples of the powerful application of coordinate transformation on wave/flux manipulation and may help to broaden research in acquiring extraordinary ways to control and utilize heat energy or configure novel heat devices.

Abstract:A second look has been given at the mechanism of convective heat transfer based on the analogy between convection and conduction with heat sources. The strength of convective heat transfer depends not only on the fluid velocity and fluid properties, but also on the coordination of fluid velocity and heat flow fields. Hence, based on the included angle of velocity and temperature gradient vectors, the presence of fluid motion may enhance or reduce heat transfer, With this concept, the known heat transfer phenomena may be understood in a deeper way, More important is that some novel approaches of heat transfer control can be developed.
