Abstract:Morphology-controlled LiMn0.9Fe0.1PO4 nanoplatelets as high performance cathode material for lithium ion batteries have been synthesized via a simple ascorbic acid-assisted solvothermal process in water-ethanol solvent. The phase structure and morphology of the products were characterized by XRD, SEM and TEM. The results reveal that decreasing the crystallite size along b-axis direction and increasing the surface area of (010) plane can shorten Li+ diffusion path and increase the electrode reaction activity. The LiMn(0.9)Fe0.1PO(4) nanoplatelet holds the high capacity of 145 mA h g(-1), 134 mA h g(-1), 119 mA h g(-1) 97 mA h g(-1) and 68 mA h g(-1) at 0.1 C, 0.5 C, 1 C, 5 C and 10 C respectively, and it can retain 75% of the initial reversible capacity even after 100 cycles at 10 C rate. Abstract:LiMnPO4/C powders have been prepared by a solid-state method with sucrose as carbon source. The structure, morphology, and electrochemical performance of the LiMnPO4/C samples have been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electronic microscopy (TEM), galvanostatic charge and discharge, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The LiMnPO4/C sample prepared by the two-step solid-state method exhibits a specific capacity of 156 mA h g−1 after 40 cycles, and over 90 % of the initial capacity can be retained with a charge-discharge rate of 0.5 C and a voltage range of 2.5–4.4 V at 50 °C. The improvement of electrochemical performance attributes to the highly uniform distribution of the minimizing particle size as well as the superior electrical conductivity of the carbon-coated nano-LiMnPO4 materials by facile two-step solid-state synthesis.

Abstract:Low yield is a common problem for the solvothermal synthesis of LiMnPO4. Herein, a high-yield synthesis route is developed to obtain novel LiMnPO4/C nanoplates via a facile water-polyethylene glycol (PEG200)-assisted solvothermal approach followed by carbonization treatment. The reactant concentration plays an important role in the formation of LiMnPO4/C by effectively controlling the solution supersaturation of solvothermal reaction. When using optimal Mn concentration of 0.5 mol L−1, the as-prepared LiMnPO4/C exhibits outstanding rate capability with a high reversible value of 100.1 mAh g−1 at 10 C and excellent cycling stability with capacity and energy density retention of ∼89.7% and ∼91.7% after 300 cycles at 0.5 C, respectively, which can be attributed to its typical structure of high crystalline, uniform carbon coating and plate-like morphology with small size of 30∼80 nm along the [010] direction. This work provides a scalable route for the design of high-performance LiMnPO4 materials for commercial lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:LiMnPO4 is proposed as more promising cathode material as LiFePO4, while poor electronic conductivity and Jahn-Teller effects during charge/discharge processes hinder the electrochemical performance. To overcome these problems, one-step solid state reaction method is developed to synthesize LiMnPO4/C composites, which is with nanostructure, high crystallinity and good carbon coating. Manganese oxide sources and calcination temperature are investigated as factors for preparing high-performance LiMnPO4/C for Li-ion batteries. The results show that the LiMnPO4/C composites prepared with mixed manganese oxide deliver a superior initial capacity of 153mAhg−1 at 0.05C and high rate performance with discharge capacities of 123mAhg−1 at 1C and 103mAhg−1 at 2C. And the LiMnPO4/C composites synthesized at 600 °C can retain 94% of the initial capacity after 200 cycles at 1C, revealing a stable cycling stability. Therefore, one-step solid state reaction brings to light the synthesis of high performance LiMnPO4/C cathode materials and is suitable for large scale production.

Abstract:Flower-like LiMnPO4 nanostructures self-assembled with (010) nanosheets were successfully synthesized via a simple hydrothermal method by employing MnSO4 and Li2SO4 as raw materials and an EG-H2O mixture as the reaction medium solvent. The flower-like LiMnPO4 nanostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-resolution TEM. The primary LiMnPO4 nanosheets are about 30 nm in thickness and dominated by (010) facets. In order to understand the formation mechanism of the flower-like LiMnPO4 nanostructures, a series of time-dependent experiments were adopted. Based on the experimental results, a possible mechanism was proposed for the formation of LiMnPO4 nanosheets and the assembly of the flower-like nanostructures. Additionally, the electrochemical performance of the flower-like LiMnPO4 nanostructures as cathode materials in Li-ion batteries was also investigated by charge-discharge measurements.

Abstract:Olivine-type LiMnPO4 has been considered as a promising cathode material for the next-generation highpower lithium ion batteries. Preparing high-performance LiMnPO4 cathodes by a simple approach has been a subject of much scientific inquiry for several years. Here, we report a simple solvothermal synthesis of LiMnPO4 nanocrystals using LiOH center dot H2O, H3PO4 and MnSO4 center dot H2O as the precursors and ethylene glycol as the reaction medium. We found that the ratio of the starting materials exerts a significant influence on the morphology, size and crystal orientation of LiMnPO4 nanocrystals. We confirmed the critical role of H+ concentration in altering the crystallization characteristics of LiMnPO4. The results showed that after carbon coating, the plate-like LiMnPO4, which was synthesized from the precursor with a LiOH/H3PO4/MnSO4 ratio of 3:1.1:1, exhibited the best electrochemical performance, yielding a discharge capacity of 108.2 mA h g(-1) at 10 degrees C and maintaining a discharge capacity of 133.5 mA h g(-1) after 100 cycles at 0.5 C. This simple, one-spot solvothermal preparation method sheds light on the synthesis of high-performance LiMnPO4 cathode material.
Preparation of High Performance Carbon-Coated LiMnPO4 Nanocomposite by an Acetate-Assisted Antisolvent Precipitation Method

Abstract:A novel acetate-assisted antisolvent precipitation method combined with ball milling and heat treatment is developed to synthesize nanosized carbon-coated LiMnPO4 material. The precursor prepared by the precipitation process is composed of Mn-3(PO4)(2) and Li3PO4 nanoparticles. After heat treatment of the ball-milled mixture of precursor and glucose, the carbon-coated LiMnPO4 with the particle size of around 60 nm is obtained. The LiMnPO4 nanocomposite synthesized at the optimized conditions delivers specific discharge capacities of 154, 134, 120, 90, and 61 mAh g(-1) at the rates of 0.05, 0.2, 1, 5, and 10C, respectively, which are comparable to some of the best reported C-LiMnPO4 materials prepared by other synthesis methods. Abstract:We report a novel composite of fluorine-doped carbon-decorated LiMn0.75Fe0.25PO4 (LMFP) nanoplates synthesized via a facile method by using hybrid sucrose and polyvinylidene fluoride as carbon and fluorine sources. In the composite, the thin LMFP nanoplates expose large amounts of (010) crystal face which shortens the Li+ ion diffusion distance. Also, the fluorine-doped carbon coating layer can provide a sufficient pathway for rapid electron transport, and the partially formed metal fluorides in the interface between the LMFP nanoplates surface and fluorine-doped carbon coating layer will help reduce charge transfer resistance. Because of this unique structure, the resulting product exhibits a superior discharge capacity of 162.2 mA h g(-1) at the 1 C current rate, and the capacity is retained 94.8% over 200 cycles. Furthermore, this material also can deliver a reversible capacity of 130.3 mA h g(-1) at an ultrahigh current rate of 20 degrees C, in which the discharge procedure can be accomplished only in 144 s. The celerity and cycling capability of the prepared material endow it with great potential for application in high performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A simple one-pot solvothermal approach is employed to synthesize LiMnPO4 (LMP) nanomaterials by using Li3PO4 nanorods and MnSO4 center dot H2O as the precursors. Various experimental parameters, such as volume ratio of polyethylene glycol 600 (PEG600) to water, reactant feeding order, reaction time and pH value, are discussed. The phase and morphology changes of the product were characterized by XRD and TEM. A reaction mechanism is proposed based on the characteristic results. The charge-discharge properties show that the LMP nanomaterials synthesized at 180 degrees C for 4 h at a pH value of 6.46 followed by sintering with glucose at 600 degrees C for 3 h under argon atmosphere present the highest discharge capacity of 147 mA h g(-1) at 0.05 C rate (i.e. w8.55 mA g(-1) of current rate) under a galvanostatic charging-discharging mode, and it can retain 93% of the initial capacity of 46.6 mA h g(-1) after cycling 200 times at 1 C rate. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) was also used to investigate the carbon coated LMP electrode.

Abstract:MnO@C core-shell nanoplates with a size of similar to 150 nm have been prepared via thermal treatment deposition of acetylene with the precursor of Mn(OH)(2) nanoplates, which has been hydrothermally synthesized. The thickness of the carbon shells varied from similar to 3.1 to 13.7 nm by controlling the treatment temperature and reaction duration time. The electrochemical performance of the MnO@C nanoplates, which were synthesized at 550 degrees C for 10 h with a carbon shell thickness of similar to 8.1 nm, display a high reversible capacity of similar to 770 mA h g(-1) at a current density of 200 mA g(-1) and good cyclability after prolonged testing, which is higher than that of MnO@C nanoplates with a carbon shell thickness of similar to 3.1, 4.0, 4.2, 10.9 and 13.7 nm.

Abstract:Nanoengineering has proven to be an effective strategy to improve the electrochemical properties of LiMPO4 (M = Fe, Mn). In this work, we report an ` up-to-down' way to synthesize LiMPO4 nanorods through an ion-exchange route using pre-prepared NH4MPO(4)center dot H2O microplates as the precursor and LiAc as the Li source. The similarity in crystal structure between NH4MPO(4)center dot H2O and LiMPO4 allows the occurrence of the ion-exchange reaction, while their structural difference induces lattice stress that breaks the NH4MPO(4)center dot H2O microplates to form interconnected, orderly arranged LiMPO4 nanorods. This work provides a general method to synthesize nanosized LiMPO4 from microsized NH4MPO(4)center dot H2O by taking advantage of their crystallization characteristics. The nanoscaled LiMPO4/C composites exhibit promising electrochemical properties after carbon coating.

Abstract:Novel LiMnPO4 nanorods have been successfully synthesized via a facile solvothermal approach in a mixed solvent of ethylene glycol (EG) and water (11 : 1, vol.). The as-prepared LiMnPO4 sample is of single crystalline and has a rod-like morphology with a small size especially a thin thickness of less than 50 nm along the [010] direction, which is expected to favour faster lithium-ion extraction/insertion reactions. Detailed investigations indicate that EG plays an important role in the formation of the LiMnPO4 nanorods by effectively regulating the morphology, size, and crystal orientation. Benefiting from the special rod-like morphology and the uniform thin carbon coating, the LiMnPO4/C composite nanorods exhibit a high reversible capacity of 168 mA h g(-1) and 110 mA h g(-1) at 0.05 C and 10 C, respectively, and a remarkable stable capacity retention of similar to 94.5% after 100 cycles at 0.5 C.

Abstract:Eight typical LiMnPO4 nanocrystals with tunable morphologies have been controllably synthesized by varying the feeding sequence and the ratio of the reactants in an EG-assisted solvothermal approach. It is found that with the decrease of the OH− concentration induced by the primary LiOH/H3PO4 ratio, the predominately exposed planes of LiMnPO4 evolve from (010) for nanospindles to (100) for nanoplates in Li–P–Mn feeding sequence, and to both (010) and (100) for nanorods in Mn–P–Li feeding sequence. Further decrease of the OH− concentration hardly affects the formation of pure-phase LiMnPO4 but results in significant changes in the morphology with distinctly increased particle size. The electrochemical properties of the corresponding LiMnPO4/C composites are remarkably dependent on their particle size. By applying the Mn–P–Li sequence and the LiOH/H3PO4 ratio of 2.7–3.0, the as-prepared LiMnPO4/C nanorods exhibit superior rate capability (more than 105mAhg−1 at 10C) and remarkable cycling stability (a capacity retention of up to 93% after 100 cycles at 0.5C) among all the samples, owing to their small length of less than 60nm along the [010] direction. The results also confirm that excess LiOH amount is indeed required to yield LiMnPO4 crystals with small particle size and attractive electrochemical properties.

Abstract:LiMnPO4 is considered as an attractive cathode material owing to its high structural stability and much higher electrode potential than that of LiFePO4. However, LiMnPO4 reveals sluggish electrochemical kinetics due to its very poor electronic/ionic conductivity. By contrast, LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 (LiNCMO) possesses high electronic conductivity and fast Li+ diffusion. Nevertheless, LiNCMO is not suitable for high security-required energy storage devices on a large scale due to its inferior thermal stability. Therefore, it is expected that LiMnPO4 in combination with LiNCMO could improve both the thermal stability and reaction kinetics of the electrode. In this work, LiMnPO4 nanosheets adhered to LiNCMO particles. Compared with the pristine LiMnPO4, the specific capacity and rate capability of the LiMnPO4-LiNCMO composite electrodes are obviously improved.

Abstract:LiMnPO4 as a positive electrode material for lithium ion batteries has been considered as a potential replacement material for LiFePO4 because of its 20% higher redox potential than that of LiFePO4. However, its low electron and lithium ion migration rate make this material an unsatisfactory rate performance and cycle stability. In this work, we report a simple solvothermal route to synthesize a novel "face-to-face" structure for LiMnPO4/expanded graphene composites, which compose of LiMnPO4 nanoplatelets with (010) preferential crystal plane in situ grown on expanded graphite. It can be found that the expanded graphite effects on the preferential orientation and morphology of the LiMnPO4 nanoparticles. In the composites, the "face-to-face" contact structure between the LiMnPO4 nanoplatelets and expanded graphite sheets provides pathways for rapid electron transfer, meanwhile, the LiMnPO4 nanoplatelets with (010) preferential crystal plane improve the active sites and shorten the Li ion diffusion distances, resulting in excellent electrochemical performance. It displays an initial discharge capacity of 130 mAhg−1, and capacity retention of 100% after 200 cycles at 1 C. Even at a high rate of 10 C, it still shows a high discharge capacity (102 mAhg−1) and long-life cycle stability (∼72% capacity retention over 1000 cycles).

Abstract:A novel structure of a carbon-coated LiMnPO4 microcluster through emulsion-based self-assembly has been fabricated to yield a high-performance battery cathode. In this rational design, nanosized LiMnPO4 plates are assembled into microclusters to achieve a dense packing and robust interparticle contact. In addition, the conductive carbon framework wrapping around these clusters functions as a fast electron highway, ensuring the high utilization of the active materials. The designed structure demonstrates enhanced specific capacity and cycling stability in lithium-ion batteries, delivering a discharge capacity of 120 mAh g(-1) after 200 cycles at 0.2 C. It also shows a superior rate capability with discharge capacities of 139.7 mAh g(-1) at 0.05 C, 131.7 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C, and 99.2 mAh g(-1) at 1 C at room temperature.

Abstract:Li-ion batteries with high-energy and high-power density are pursued to apply in the electronic vehicles and renewable energy storage systems. In this work, layered Li-rich transition-metal oxide cathode Li1.2Ni0.2Mn0.6O2 nanoplates with enhanced growth of {010} planes (LNMO-NP) is successfully synthesized through a facile and versatile strategy. Ethylene glycol plays an important role in the formation of LNMO-NP nanoplates with {010} electrochemically active surface planes exposure. As cathode for Li-ion batteries, LNMO-NP demonstrates a high specific discharge capacity of 270.2 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 degrees C (1 C = 300 mA g(-1)) and an excellent rate capability. The good electrochemical performance can be attributed to the nanoplates with the growth of {010} electrochemically active planes which is in favor of Li+ intercalationideintercalation.
