Abstract: For typical perturbations of convex integrable Hamiltonian system with three degrees of freedom, a path of diffusion is established to cross strong double resonant point. Together with the uniform hyperbolicity of invariant cylinders got in \cite{C15}, one obtains a transition chain along which one is able to construct diffusion orbits suggested in \cite{A66}.

Abstract:For a nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems $H=h(p)+\epsilon P(p,q)$ with $(p,q)\in\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{T}^3$, large normally hyperbolic invariant cylinders exist along the whole resonant path, except for the $\sqrt{\epsilon}^{1+d}$-neighborhood of finitely many double resonant points. Abstract:In this paper, we analyze the adiabatic crossing of a resonance for Hamiltonian systems when a double-resonance condition is satisfied by the linear frequency at an elliptic fixed point. We discuss in detail the phase-space structure on a class of Hamiltonians and area-preserving maps with an elliptic fixed point in the presence of a time-dependent exciter. Various regimes have been identified and carefully studied. This study extends results obtained recently for the trapping and transport phenomena for periodically perturbed Hamiltonian systems, and it could have relevant applications in the adiabatic beam splitting in accelerator physics.

Abstract:We consider a 1D $2\times 2$ matrix-valued operator \eqref{System0} with two semiclassical Schrödinger operators on the diagonal entries and small interactions on the off-diagonal ones. When the two potentials cross at a turning point with contact order $n$, the corresponding two classical trajectories at the crossing level intersect at one point in the phase space with contact order $2n$. We compute the transfer matrix at this point between the incoming and outgoing microlocal solutions and apply it to the semiclassical distribution of resonances at the energy crossing level. It is described in terms of a generalized Airy function. This result generalizes \cite{FMW1} to the tangential crossing and \cite{AFH1} to the crossing at a turning point.

Abstract:In this paper, a general and systematic scheme is provided to research strong and weak resonances derived from delay-induced various double Hopf bifurcations in delayed differential systems. The method of multiple scales is extended to obtain a common complex amplitude equation when the double Hopf bifurcation with frequency ratio k1:k2occurs in the systems under consideration. By analyzing the complex amplitude equation, we give the conditions of the strong and weak resonances respectively in the analytical expressions. The weak resonances correspond to the codimension-two double Hopf bifurcations since the amplitudes and the phases may be decoupled, but the strong resonances to the codimension-three double Hopf bifurcations in the system. It is seen that the weak resonances happen in the system even for a lower-order ratio, i.e. k1+ k2≤ 4. As applications, two examples are displayed. Three cases of the delay-induced resonance with 1:2, 1:3, 1:5 and [Formula: see text] are discussed in detail and the corresponding normals are represented. Thus, the relative dynamical behaviors can be easily classified in the physical parameter space in terms of nonlinear dynamics. The results show the provided conditions may be used to determine that a resonance is strong or weak.
Resonant chains in triple-planetary systems

Abstract:A resonant chain may be formed in a multi-planetary system when ratios of the orbital periods can be expressed as ratios of small integers $T_1:T_2: \cdots :T_N=k_1: k_2: \cdots: k_N$. We investigate the dynamics and possible formation of resonant chain. The appropriate Hamiltonian for a three-planet resonant chain is defined and numerically averaged over the synodic period. The stable stationary solutions (apsidal corotational resonance, ACR) of this system, corresponding to the local extrema of Hamiltonian function, can be searched out numerically. The topology of the Hamiltonian around these ACRs reveals their stabilities. We further construct dynamical maps on representative planes to study the dynamics, and we calculate the deviation ($\chi^2$) of the resonant angle from the uniformly distributed values. Finally, the formation of resonant chain via convergent migration is simulated and stable configurations associated with ACRs are verified. We find that stable ACR families arising from circular orbits always exist for any resonant chain, and they may extend to high eccentricity. Around ACR solutions, regular motion are found in two types of resonant configurations. One is characterised by libration of both the two-body resonant angles and the three-body Laplace resonant angle, and the other by libration of only two-body resonant angles. The Laplace resonance seems not to contribute much to the stability. The resonant chain can be formed via convergent migration, and subsequently the resonant configuration evolves along the ACR families to eccentric orbits. Ideally, our methods introduced here can be applied to any resonant chain of any number of planets at any eccentricity.

Abstract:We investigate the width of the resonance zone in a degenerate Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom, in which the Hamiltonian lacks the quadratic term in the Taylor expansion. This leads to larger excursions of action in the phase space than the nondegenerate one, and corresponding resonance frequency widths would become narrower. However, in contrast to the nonautonomous Hamiltonian system with one and half degree of freedom, we find that the above case is not generic and only occurs at particular resonances. An example relevant to the interaction of resonances is considered. Analytic results are verified in numerical simulations.

Abstract:Nonlinear resonances in the classical phase space lead to a significant enhancement of tunneling. We demonstrate that the double resonance gives rise to a complicated tunneling peak structure. Such double resonances occur in Hamiltonian systems with an at least four-dimensional phase space. To explain the tunneling peak structure, we use the universal description of single and double resonances by 4D normal-form Hamiltonians. By applying perturbative methods, we reveal the underlying mechanism of enhancement and suppression of tunneling and obtain excellent quantitative agreement. Using a minimal matrix, we obtain model an intuitive understanding.

Abstract:An efficient method is proposed to study delay-induced strong resonant double Hopf bifurcation for nonlinear systems with time delay. As an illustration, the proposed method is employed to investigate the 1:2 double Hopf bifurcation in the van der Pol system with time delay. Dynamics arising from the bifurcation are classified qualitatively and expressed approximately in a closed form for either square or cubic nonlinearity. The results show that 1:2 resonance can lead to codimension-three and codimension-two bifurcations. The validity of analytical predictions is shown by their consistency with numerical simulations. Abstract:For a Hamiltonian system, in which the Hamiltonian is assumed to have an asymptotically linear gradient, the existence of nontrivial periodic solutions is proved under the assumption that the linearized operators have distinct Maslov indices at 0 and at infinity. Both the linearized operators may be degenerate. In particular, the results cover the “strong resonance” case.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate a class of reversible dynamical systems in four dimensions. The spectrums of their linear operators at the equilibria are assumed to have a pair of positive and negative real eigenvalues and a pair of purely imaginary eigenvalues for the small parameter μ > 0, where these two real eigenvalues bifurcate from a double eigenvalue 0 for μ = 0. It has been shown that this class of systems owns a generalized homoclinic solution with one hump at the center (a homoclinic solution exponentially approaching a periodic solution with a small amplitude). This paper gives a rigorous existence proof of two-hump solutions. These two humps are far away and are glued by the small oscillations in the middle if some appropriate free constants are activated. The obtained results are also applied to some classical systems. The ideas here may be used to study the existence of 2 k -hump solutions.

Abstract:The kink dynamics of the damped Frenkel-Kontorova (discrete sine-Gordon) chain driven by a constant external force is investigated. Resonant steplike transitions of the average velocity occur due to the competition between the moving kinks and their radiated phasonlike modes. A mean-field consideration is introduced to give a precise prediction of the resonant steps. Slip-stick motion and spatiotemporal dynamics on those resonant steps are discussed. Our results can be applied to studies of the fluxon dynamics of one-dimensional Josephson-junction arrays and ladders, dislocations, tribology, and other fields.

Abstract:Under investigation in this paper is a discrete modified exponential Toda lattice equation which may describe vibration of particles in a lattice. Firstly, we construct an integrable lattice hierarchy associated with this equation from a $2\times 2$ matrix spectral problem, and some related integrable properties such as Hamiltonian structures, Liouville integrability and conservation laws of this hierarchy are discussed. Secondly, we present the discrete generalized $(m, N-m)$-fold Darboux transformation of the modified exponential Toda lattice equation on the basis of its known Lax representation. As applications of the obtained discrete generalized Darboux transformation, multi-kink-soliton solutions on an exponential surface background and an inclined plane background are obtained when $m=2N$, the discrete rational and semi-rational solutions are derived when $m=1$, and the mixed solutions of usual soliton solutions and rational solutions are given when $m=2$. Based on the asymptotic and graphic analysis, soliton elastic interaction phenomena and limit states related to rational solutions are discussed and analyzed. Furthermore, some mathematical features of rational solutions are summarized. Finally, numerical simulations are used to explore the dynamical behaviors of such soliton solutions which show the soliton evolutions are robust against a small noise. These results and properties given in this paper might be useful for understanding nonlinear lattice dynamics.

Abstract:The dynamical behavior of a general n-dimensional delay differential equation (DDE) around a 1:3 resonant double Hopf bifurcation point is analyzed. The method of multiple scales is used to obtain complex bifurcation equations. By expressing complex amplitudes in a mixed polar-Cartesian representation, the complex bifurcation equations are again obtained in real form. As an illustration, a system of two coupled van der Pol oscillators is considered and a set of parameter values for which a 1:3 resonant double Hopf bifurcation occurs is established. The dynamical behavior around the resonant double Hopf bifurcation point is analyzed in terms of three control parameters. The validity of analytical results is shown by their consistency with numerical simulations.
Inverse resonance problem on a perturbed infinite hyperbolic cylinder

Abstract:We study an inverse resonance problem on a radially and compactly perturbed infinite hyperbolic cylinder. Using the symmetries of this kind of geometry, we are led to study a stationary Schr{ö}dinger equation on the line with a potential V which is the sum of a P{ö}schl-Teller potential and a perturbation which we consider integrable and compactly supported. We define the resonances as the poles of the reflection coefficients with a negative imaginary part. We prove that, under some assumptions on the support of the compact perturbation, we are able to solve the question of uniqueness in the inverse resonance problem. We also give asymptotics of the resonances and show that they are asymptotically localised on two logarithmic branches and according to the localisation of the support of q, sometimes also on parallel lines to the imaginary axis.

Abstract:Context. The mean motion resonance is the most important mechanism that may dominate the dynamics of a planetary system. In a multi-planetary system consisting of N ≥ 3 planets, the planets may form a resonant chain when the ratios of orbital periods of planets can be expressed as the ratios of small integers T 1 : T 2 : ⋯ : T N = k 1 : k 2 : ⋯ : k N . Due to the high degree of freedom, the motion in such systems could be complex and difficult to depict. Aims. In this paper, we investigate the dynamics and possible formation of the resonant chain in a triple-planet system. Methods. We defined the appropriate Hamiltonian for a three-planet resonant chain and numerically averaged it over the synodic period. The stable stationary solutions – apsidal corotational resonances (ACRs) – of this averaged system, corresponding to the local extrema of the Hamiltonian function, can be searched out numerically.
