Abstract:For a nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems $H=h(p)+\epsilon P(p,q)$ with $(p,q)\in\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{T}^3$, large normally hyperbolic invariant cylinders exist along the whole resonant path, except for the $\sqrt{\epsilon}^{1+d}$-neighborhood of finitely many double resonant points. It allows one to construct diffusion orbits to cross double resonance.

Abstract:In this paper, we study Tonelli Lagrangian L is an element of C-r (TT2, R) with r >= 5. For a generic perturbation of Lagrangian L -> L + P where P is an element of C-r(T-2, R), we get simultaneous hyperbolicity of a family of minimal periodic orbits which share the same first homology class. Consequently, these periodic orbits make up one or more pieces of normally hyperbolic invariant cylinder in TT2.

Abstract:A heterodimensional cycle is an invariant set of a dynamical system consisting of two hyperbolic periodic orbits with different dimensions of their unstable manifolds and a pair of orbits that connect them. For systems which are at least $C^2$, we show that bifurcations of a coindex-1 heterodimensional cycle within a generic 2-parameter family create robust heterodimensional dynamics, i.e., a pair of non-trivial hyperbolic basic sets with different numbers of positive Lyapunov exponents, such that the unstable manifold of each of the sets intersects the stable manifold of the second set and these intersections persist for an open set of parameter values. We also give a solution to the so-called local stabilization problem of coindex-1 heterodimensional cycles in any regularity class $r=2,\ldots,\infty,\omega$. The results are based on the observation that arithmetic properties of moduli of topological conjugacy of systems with heterodimensional cycles determine the emergence of Bonatti-Díaz blenders.

Bifurcation analysis of quasi-periodic orbits of mechanical systems with 1:2 internal resonance via spectral submanifolds

Abstract:A 1:2 internally resonant mechanical system can undergo secondary Hopf (Neimark-Sacker) bifurcations, resulting in a quasi-periodic response when the system is subject to harmonic excitation. While these quasi-periodic orbits have been observed in practice, their bifurcations are not well studied, especially in high-dimensional mechanical systems. This is mainly because of the challenges associated with the computation and bifurcation detection of these quasi-periodic motions. Here we present a computational framework to address these challenges via reductions on spectral submanifolds, which transforms quasi-periodic orbits of high-dimensional systems as limit cycles of four-dimensional reduced-order models. We apply the proposed framework to analyze bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits in several mechanical systems exhibiting 1:2 internal resonance, including a finite element model of a shallow-curved shell. We uncover local bifurcations such as period-doubling and saddle-node, as well as global bifurcations such as homoclinic connections, isolas, and simple bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits. We also observe cascades of period-doubling bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits that eventually result in chaotic motions, as well as the coexistence of chaotic and quasi-periodic attractors. These findings elucidate the complex bifurcation mechanism of quasi-periodic orbits in 1:2 internally resonant systems.

Abstract:In this paper we consider families of holomorphic maps defined on subsets of the complex plane, and show that the technique developed in [24] to treat unfolding of critical relations can also be used to deal with cases where the critical orbit converges to a hyperbolic attracting or a parabolic periodic orbit. As before this result applies to rather general families of maps, such as polynomial-like mappings, provided some lifting property holds. Our Main Theorem states that either the multiplier of a hyperbolic attracting periodic orbit depends univalently on the parameter and bifurcations at parabolic periodic points are generic, or one has persistency of periodic orbits with a fixed multiplier.

Abstract:We prove that, for $C^{1}$ -generic diffeomorphisms, if the periodic orbits contained in a homoclinic class $H(p)$ have all their Lyapunov exponents bounded away from zero, then $H(p)$ must be (uniformly) hyperbolic. This is in the spirit of the works on the stability conjecture, but with a significant difference that the homoclinic class $H(p)$ is not known isolated in advance, hence the ‘weak’ periodic orbits created by perturbations near the homoclinic class have to be guaranteed strictly inside the homoclinic class. In this sense the problem is of an ‘intrinsic’ nature, and the classical proof of the stability conjecture does not work. In particular, we construct in the proof several perturbations which are not simple applications of the connecting lemmas.

Abstract:Resonance relations among periodic orbits on given energy hypersurfaces are very important for getting deeper understanding of the dynamics of the corresponding Hamiltonian systems. In this paper, we establish two new resonance identities for closed characteristics on every compact star-shaped hypersurface Σ in R^2n when the number of geometrically distinct closed characteristics on Σ is finite, which extend those identities established by C. Viterbo in 1989 for star-shaped hypersurfaces assuming in addition that all the closed characteristics and their iterates are non-degenerate, and that by W. Wang, X. Hu and Y. Long in 2007 for strictly convex hypersurfaces in R^2n.

Abstract:We show a $C^r$ connecting lemma for area-preserving surface diffeomorphisms and for periodic Hamiltonian on surfaces. We prove that for a generic $C^r$, $r=1, 2, ...$, $\infty$, area-preserving diffeomorphism on a compact orientable surface, homotopic to identity, every hyperbolic periodic point has a transversal homoclinic point. We also show that for a $C^r$, $r=1, 2, ...$, $\infty$ generic time periodic Hamiltonian vector field in a compact orientable surface, every hyperbolic periodic trajectory has a transversal homoclinic point. The proof explores the special properties of diffeomorphisms that are generated by Hamiltonian flows.

Abstract:We show that, for Cl-generic diffeornorphisms, every chain recurrent class C that has a partially hyperbolic splitting E-s circle plus E-c circle plus E-u with dim E-c = 1 either is an isolated hyperbolic periodic orbit, or is accumulated by non-trivial homoclinic classes. We also prove that, for C-1 -generic diffeomorphisms, any chain recurrent class that has a dorninated splitting E circle plus F with dim(E) = 1 either is a homoclinic class, or the bundle E is uniformly contracting. As a corollary we prove in dimension three a conjecture of Palis, which announces that any C-1 -generic diffeomorphism is either Morse-Smale, or has a non-trivial homoclinic class.

Together with the uniform hyperbolicity of invariant cylinders got in \cite{C15}, one obtains a transition chain along which one is able to construct diffusion orbits suggested in \cite{A66}.

Abstract:There is a long standing conjecture in Hamiltonian analysis which claims that there exist at least $n$ geometrically distinct closed characteristics on every compact convex hypersurface in $\R^{2n}$ with $n\ge 2$. Besides many partial results, this conjecture has been only completely solved for $n=2$. In this paper, we give a confirmed answer to this conjecture for $n=3$. In order to prove this result, we establish first a new resonance identity for closed characteristics on every compact convex hypersurface $\Sg$ in $\R^{2n}$ when the number of geometrically distinct closed characteristics on $\Sg$ is finite. Then using this identity and earlier techniques of the index iteration theory, we prove the mentioned multiplicity result for $\R^6$. If there are exactly two geometrically distinct closed characteristics on a compact convex hypersuface in $\R^4$, we prove that both of them must be irrationally elliptic.

Abstract:Transversality of stable and unstable manifolds of hyperbolic periodic trajectories is proved for monotone cyclic systems with negative feedback. Such systems in general are not in the category of monotone dynamical systems in the sense of Hirsch. Our main tool utilized in the proofs is the so-called cone of high rank. We further show that stable and unstable manifolds between a hyperbolic equilibrium and a hyperbolic periodic trajectory, or between two hyperbolic equilibria with different dimensional unstable manifolds also intersect transversely.

Abstract:In this paper we establish a closing property and a hyperbolic closing property for thin trapped chain hyperbolic homoclinic classes with one dimensional center in partial hyperbolicity setting. Taking advantage of theses properties, we prove that the growth rate of the number of hyperbolic periodic points is equal to the topological entropy. We also obtain that the hyperbolic periodic measures are dense in the space of invariant measures.

Abstract:In this paper we study the existence of nontrivial 2π-periodic solutions of asymptotically linear Hamiltonian systems. We consider the case of resonance both at zero and at infinity, and we permit time-dependent asymptotic matrices. Our main tools are an infinite dimensional cohomology theory and a corresponding Morse theory recently constructed by W. Kryszewski and the first author. We develop a method to compute the new critical groups.
