Abstract:It is well known that under generic C(R) smooth perturbations, the phenomenon of global instability, known as Arnold diffusion, exists in a priori unstable Hamiltonian systems. In this paper, by using variational methods, we will prove that under generic Gevrey smooth perturbations, Arnold diffusion still exists in the a priori unstable Hamiltonian systems of two and a half degrees of freedom.

Abstract:In the present paper we apply the geometrical mechanism of diffusion in an \emph{a priori} unstable Hamiltonian system with 3 $+$ 1/2 degrees of freedom. This mechanism consists of combining iterations of the \emph{inner} and \emph{outer} dynamics associated to a \emph{Normallly Hyperbolic Invariant Manifold} (NHIM), to construct diffusing \emph{pseudo-orbits} and subsequently apply shadowing results to prove the existence of diffusing orbits of the system.

Abstract:In this paper we study the following nonperiodic second order Hamiltonian system−u¨(t)+L(t)u(t)=∇uR(t,u),∀t∈R, where L(t) may not be uniformly positive definite for all t∈R, and R(t,u) is asymptotically quadratic in u as |u|→∞. By applying a generalized linking theorem in Bartsch and Ding (2006) [8], we obtain the existence and multiplicity of homoclinic orbits for the above system.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the nearly integrable system of the form H(x,y) = h(y) + ε P(x,y), x ∈𝕋^n, y ∈ℝ^n, n ⩾ 3 admits orbits that pass through any finitely many prescribed small balls on the same energy level H−1(E) provided that E > min h, if h is convex, and εP is typical. This settles the Arnold diffusion conjecture for convex systems in the smooth category. We also prove the counterpart of Arnold diffusion for the Riemannian metric perturbation of the flat torus.
A canonical Hamiltonian for open quantum systems

Abstract:If an open quantum system is initially uncorrelated from its environment, then its dynamics can be written in terms of a Lindblad-form master equation. The master equation is divided into a unitary piece, represented by an effective Hamiltonian, and a dissipative piece, represented by a hermiticity-preserving superoperator; however, the division of open system dynamics into unitary and dissipative pieces is non-unique. For finite-dimensional quantum systems, we resolve this non-uniqueness by specifying a norm on the space of dissipative superoperators and defining the canonical Hamiltonian to be the one whose dissipator is minimal. We show that the canonical Hamiltonian thus defined is equivalent to the Hamiltonian initially defined by Lindblad, and that it is uniquely specified by requiring the dissipator's jump operators to be traceless, extending a uniqueness result known previously in the special case of Markovian master equations. For a system weakly coupled to its environment, we give a recursive formula for computing the canonical effective Hamiltonian to arbitrary orders in perturbation theory, which we can think of as a perturbative scheme for renormalizing the system's bare Hamiltonian.

Abstract:Ann-degree-of-freedom quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian system is first reduced to anItôequation of one-dimensional averaged Hamiltonian by using the stochastic averaging method developed by the first author and his coworkers. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability in probability of the trivial solution of the quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian system are then obtained approximately by examining the sample behaviors of the one-dimensional diffusion process of the square-root of averaged Hamiltonian at the two boundaries. A system of linearly and non-linearly coupled two non-linearly damped oscillators subject to parametric excitations of Gaussian white noises is employed as an example to illustrate the procedure, and the effects of non-linear damping and non-linear coupling on the stability are analyzed in detail.

Suppose that H,b and V depend periodically on t and x, and that H(t,x,z) is superquadratic in z as |z|→∞. Without a symmetry assumption on H, we establish the existence of infinitely many geometrically distinct solutions via a variational approach.

The result relies on the cusp-generic existence of chains in nearly integrable a priori stable systems, proved in a previous paper, together with the existence of diffusion orbits along such chains. Variational method has been shown a powerful tool for the study of Arnold diffusion of Hamiltonian systems convex in actions. Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the net of transition chain is $\delta$-dense for nearly integrable positive definite Hamiltonian systems with 3 degrees of freedom in the cusp-residual generic sense in $C^r$-topology, $r\ge 6$. The main ingredients of the proof existed in \cite{CZ,C17a,C17b}. As an immediate consequence, Arnold diffusion exists among this class of Hamiltonian systems. The question of \cite{C17c} is answered in Section 9 of the paper.

Abstract:An open quantum system with multiple levels coupled to a bosonic environment at zero temperature is investigated systematically using the non-Markovian quantum-state-diffusion (QSD) method [W. T. Strunz, L. Diosi, and N. Gisin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 82, 1801 (1999)]. We have established exact time-local QSD equations for a set of interesting multilevel open systems, including high-spin systems, multiple-transition atomic models, and multilevel atomic models driven by time-dependent external fields. These exact QSD equations have paved the way to evaluate the dynamics of open multilevel atomic systems in the general non-Markovian regimes without any approximation.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the chaotic motion of a massive particle moving in a perturbed Schwarzschild or Kerr background. We discover three novel orbits that do not exist in the unperturbed cases. First, we find zoom-whirl orbits moving around the photon shell which simultaneously exhibits Arnold diffusion: large oscillations of particle's angular momentum and energy. Next, we show the existence of oscillating orbits between a bounded region and infinity, analogous to Newtonian three-body problem. Thirdly, we find that in perturbed Kerr, there exists chaotic orbits around the event horizon that escapes the event horizon after approaching it.

Abstract:For a nearly integrable Hamiltonian systems $H=h(p)+\epsilon P(p,q)$ with $(p,q)\in\mathbb{R}^3\times\mathbb{T}^3$, large normally hyperbolic invariant cylinders exist along the whole resonant path, except for the $\sqrt{\epsilon}^{1+d}$-neighborhood of finitely many double resonant points. It allows one to construct diffusion orbits to cross double resonance.

Abstract:In this paper, we study the problem of homoclinic orbits to Aubry sets for time-periodic positive definite Lagrangian systems. We show that there are infinitely many homoclinic orbits to some Aubry set under the conditions that the associated Mather set is uniquely ergodic and the first relative homology group of the projection of this Aubry set is nonzero.

Abstract:In this paper, we show the existence of non-contractible periodic orbits in Hamiltonian systems defined on T*T-n separating two Lagrangian tori under a certain cone assumption. Our result gives a positive answer to a question of Polterovich in [P]. As an application, we find periodic orbits in almost all the homotopy classes on a dense set of energy levels in Lorentzian type mechanical Hamiltonian systems defined on T*T-2. This solves a problem of Arnold in [A].
