Abstract:In the present paper we apply the geometrical mechanism of diffusion in an \emph{a priori} unstable Hamiltonian system with 3 $+$ 1/2 degrees of freedom. This mechanism consists of combining iterations of the \emph{inner} and \emph{outer} dynamics associated to a \emph{Normallly Hyperbolic Invariant Manifold} (NHIM), to construct diffusing \emph{pseudo-orbits} and subsequently apply shadowing results to prove the existence of diffusing orbits of the system.

Abstract:It is well known that under generic C(R) smooth perturbations, the phenomenon of global instability, known as Arnold diffusion, exists in a priori unstable Hamiltonian systems. In this paper, by using variational methods, we will prove that under generic Gevrey smooth perturbations, Arnold diffusion still exists in the a priori unstable Hamiltonian systems of two and a half degrees of freedom.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the nearly integrable system of the form H(x,y) = h(y) + ε P(x,y), x ∈𝕋^n, y ∈ℝ^n, n ⩾ 3 admits orbits that pass through any finitely many prescribed small balls on the same energy level H−1(E) provided that E > min h, if h is convex, and εP is typical. This settles the Arnold diffusion conjecture for convex systems in the smooth category. We also prove the counterpart of Arnold diffusion for the Riemannian metric perturbation of the flat torus.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove that the net of transition chain is $\delta$-dense for nearly integrable positive definite Hamiltonian systems with 3 degrees of freedom in the cusp-residual generic sense in $C^r$-topology, $r\ge 6$. The main ingredients of the proof existed in \cite{CZ,C17a,C17b}. As an immediate consequence, Arnold diffusion exists among this class of Hamiltonian systems. The question of \cite{C17c} is answered in Section 9 of the paper.

Abstract:This paper constructs a certain planar four-body problem which exhibits fast energy growth. The system considered is a quasi-periodic perturbation of the Restricted Planar Circular three-body Problem (RPC3BP). Gelfreich-Turaev's and de la Llave's mechanism is employed to obtain the fast energy growth. The diffusion is created by a heteroclinic cycle formed by two Lyapunov periodic orbits surrounding L_1 and L_2 Lagrangian points and their heteroclinic intersections. Our model is the first known example in celestial mechanics of the a priori chaotic case of Arnold diffusion.

Abstract:The almost sure asymptotic stability of higher-dimensional linear stochastic systems and of a special class of nonlinear stochastic systems with homogeneous drift and diffusion coefficients of order one is studied. Based on the well-known Khasminskii's theorem, a new approach for obtaining the regions of almost sure asymptotic stability and instability without evaluating the stationary probability density of the diffusion process defined on unit hypersphere is proposed. Two examples of two and three degree-of-freedom linear stochastic systems are given to illustrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed approach combined with stochastic averaging.

Abstract:Ann-degree-of-freedom quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian system is first reduced to anItôequation of one-dimensional averaged Hamiltonian by using the stochastic averaging method developed by the first author and his coworkers. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability in probability of the trivial solution of the quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian system are then obtained approximately by examining the sample behaviors of the one-dimensional diffusion process of the square-root of averaged Hamiltonian at the two boundaries. A system of linearly and non-linearly coupled two non-linearly damped oscillators subject to parametric excitations of Gaussian white noises is employed as an example to illustrate the procedure, and the effects of non-linear damping and non-linear coupling on the stability are analyzed in detail.

Abstract:Global diffusion of Hamiltonian dynamical systems is investigated by using a coupled standard maps. Arnold web is visualized in the frequency space, using local rotation numbers, while Arnold diffusion and resonance overlaps are distinguished by the residence time distributions at resonance layers. Global diffusion in the phase space is shown to be accelerated by diffusion across overlapped resonances generated by the coupling term, rather than Arnold diffusion along the lower-order resonances. The former plays roles of hubs for transport in the phase space, and accelerate the diffusion.

Abstract:We present a diffusion mechanism for time-dependent perturbations of autonomous Hamiltonian systems introduced in [25]. This mechanism is based on shadowing of pseudo-orbits generated by two dynamics: an `outer dynamics', given by homoclinic trajectories to a normally hyperbolic invariant manifold, and an `inner dynamics', given by the restriction to that manifold. On the inner dynamics the only assumption is that it preserves area. Unlike other approaches, [25] does not rely on the KAM theory and/or Aubry-Mather theory to establish the existence of diffusion. Moreover, it does not require to check twist conditions or non-degeneracy conditions near resonances. The conditions are explicit and can be checked by finite precision calculations in concrete systems. As an application, we study the planar elliptic restricted three-body problem. We present a rigorous theorem that shows that if some concrete calculations yield a non zero value, then for any sufficiently small, positive value of the eccentricity of the orbits of the main bodies, there are orbits of the infinitesimal body that exhibit a change of energy that is bigger than some fixed number, which is independent of the eccentricity. We verify numerically these calculations for values of the masses close to that of the Jupiter/Sun system. The numerical calculations are not completely rigorous, because we ignore issues of round-off error and do not estimate the truncations, but they are not delicate at all by the standard of numerical analysis. (Standard tests indicate that we get 7 or 8 figures of accuracy where 1 would be enough). The code of this verifications is available. We hope that some full computer assisted proofs will be obtained in a near future since there are packages (CAPD) designed for problems of this type.
