Abstract:The significant advances in nonlinear stochastic dynamics and control in Hamiltonian formulation during the past decade are reviewed. The exact stationary solutions and equivalent nonlinear system method of Gaussian-white -noises excited and dissipated Hamiltonian systems, the stochastic averaging method for quasi Hamiltonian systems, the stochastic stability, stochastic bifurcation, first-passage time and nonlinear stochastic optimal control of quasi Hamiltonian systems are summarized. Possible extension and applications of the theory are pointed out. This review article cites 158 references.

Abstract:Ann-degree-of-freedom quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian system is first reduced to anItôequation of one-dimensional averaged Hamiltonian by using the stochastic averaging method developed by the first author and his coworkers. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability in probability of the trivial solution of the quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian system are then obtained approximately by examining the sample behaviors of the one-dimensional diffusion process of the square-root of averaged Hamiltonian at the two boundaries. A system of linearly and non-linearly coupled two non-linearly damped oscillators subject to parametric excitations of Gaussian white noises is employed as an example to illustrate the procedure, and the effects of non-linear damping and non-linear coupling on the stability are analyzed in detail.

Abstract:Some new developments in nonlinear stochastic structural dynamics recently made by the present author and his co-workers are reviewed. A nonlinear structure under random loading is modeled as a stochastically excited and dissipated Hamiltonian system of finite degree-of-freedom (DOF). The functional form of the exact stationary solution, the equivalent nonlinear system and the stochastic averaging equations of a stochastically excited and dissipated Hamiltonian system are constructed based on the integrability and resonance of the associated Hamiltonian system, and thus the response of the system is predicted. The stochastic stability, stochastic bifurcation and optimal nonlinear feedback control of the system are treated by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi-Hamiltonian systems. It is pointed out that the theory is promising and deserves further development.

Abstract:The averaged equations of integrable and nonresonant Hamiltonian systems of multi-degree-of-freedom subject to light damping and real noise excitations of small intensities are first derived. Then, the expression for the largest Lyapunov exponent of the square root of the Hamiltonian is formulated by generalizing the well-known procedure due to Khasminskii to the averaged equations, from which the stochastic stability and bifurcation phenomena of the original systems can be determined approximately. Linear and nonlinear stochastic systems of two degrees-of-freedom are investigated to illustrate the application of the proposed combination approach of the stochastic averaging method for quasi-integrable Hamiltonian systems and Khasminskii’s procedure.

Abstract:The paper consists of two parts. In the first part the stochastic averaging of quasi-integrable-Hamiltonian systems with real noise excitations is introduced. The expression for the largest Lyapunov exponent of the square root of the Hamiltonian is formulated by generalizing the Khasminskii's procedure to the averaged systems, based on which the stochastic stability and bifurcation of the original systems are studied. In the second part, an n-degree-of-freedom quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian system is reduced to an Ito equation of one-dimensional averaged Hamiltonian by using the stochastic averaging method for quasi-non-integrable-Hamiltonian systems. The necessary and sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability in probability of the trivial solution and the condition for the Hopf bifurcation of the original systems are obtained approximately by examining the sample behaviors of the one-dimensional diffusion process of the square-root of averaged Hamiltonian and the averaged Hamiltonian, respectively, at the two boundaries.

Abstract:The almost sure asymptotic stability of higher-dimensional linear stochastic systems and of a special class of nonlinear stochastic systems with homogeneous drift and diffusion coefficients of order one is studied. Based on the well-known Khasminskii's theorem, a new approach for obtaining the regions of almost sure asymptotic stability and instability without evaluating the stationary probability density of the diffusion process defined on unit hypersphere is proposed. Two examples of two and three degree-of-freedom linear stochastic systems are given to illustrate the application and effectiveness of the proposed approach combined with stochastic averaging.

Abstract:Systems which specifications change abruptly and statistically, referred to as Markovian-jump systems, are considered in this paper. An approximate method is presented to assess the asymptotic stability, with probability one, of nonlinear, multi-degree-of-freedom, Markovian-jump quasi-nonintegrable Hamiltonian systems subjected to stochastic excitations. Using stochastic averaging and linearization, an approximate formula for the largest Lyapunov exponent of the Hamiltonian equations is derived, from which necessary and sufficient conditions for asymptotic stability are obtained for different jump rules. In a Markovian-jump system with unstable operating forms, the stability conditions prescribe limitations on time spent in each unstable form so as to render the entire system asymptotically stable. The validity and utility of this approximate technique are demonstrated by a nonlinear two-degree-of-freedom oscillator that is stochastically driven and capable of Markovian jumps.

Abstract:The stability of synchronized states (including equilibrium point, periodic orbit or chaotic attractor) in stochastic coupled dynamical systems (ordinary differential equations) is considered. A general approach is presented, based on the master stability function, Gershgorin disc theory and the extreme value theory in statistics, to yield constraints on the distribution of coupling to ensure the stability of synchronized dynamics. Three types of different behaviour: global-stable, exponential-stable and power-stable, are found, depending on the nature of the distribution of the interactions between units. Systems with specific coupling schemes are used as examples to illustrate our general method.

Abstract:In this talk, we shall discuss stability of one-dimensional dynamical systems, from both topological and measure-theoretical point of view. A time-discrete dynamical system is represented by a self map f : M → M . For n ≥ 0, let f denote the n-th iterate of f . For each x ∈ M , the orbit of x is defined to be the sequence orb(x) = {f(x)}n=0. The theory of dynamical system studies the orbit structure. Stability, roughly speaking, means that the global dynamical property remains unchanged under a small perturbation of the system. It is generally believed that “most” dynamical systems have certain kind of hyperbolicity which in turn implies stability in a suitable sense.

Abstract:Dynamic instability in the mechanics of elastic structures is a fascinating topic, with many issues still unsettled. Accordingly, there is a wealth of literature examining the problems from different perspectives (analytical, numerical, experimental etc.), and coverings a wide variety of topics (bifurcations, chaos, strange attractors, imperfection sensitivity, tailor-ability, parametric resonance, conservative or non-conservative systems, linear or non-linear systems, fluid-solid interaction, follower forces, etc.). This paper provides a survey of selected topics of current research interest. It aims to collate the key recent developments and international trends, as well as describe any possible future challenges. A paradigmatic example of Ziegler paradox on the destabilizing effect of small damping is also included.
