Abstract:Bulk-phase doping and surface oxygen-defective engineering of TiO2-based nanostructures are identified as effective routes for enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Here, we reported a reduced Ti–Ni–O nanotubes photoanode with anatase-rutile crystalline-core and oxygen vavancies amorphous-shell for boosted PEC water splitting. The core-shell hetero-phase reduced Ti–Ni–O nanotubes were fabricated through phase-structure modulation by a thermal treatment of anodized Ti–Ni–O nanotubes on Ti–Ni alloy and with one-step electrochemical reduction. Microstructure, optical and PEC measurement results confirmed effective bulk-phase Ni-doping and surface oxygen vacancies self-doping into the reduced mixed-phase Ti–Ni–O nanotubes, which enabled high capability of optical-absorption and simultaneously favored charge separation-transfer for remarkably improved the PEC water splitting. A higher photocurrent density of 1.66 mA/cm2 at 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl and solar-to-hydrogen efficiency of 0.79% were achieved for the reduced Ti–Ni–O system, which was 5.35 and 5.27 times that of undoped TiO2, respectively. This work may shed an insight view on fabricating high-performance Ti-based nano-photoanodes with enhanced light harvesting and carrier kinetics for efficient PEC water splitting, through synergistic strategy of bulk-phase elements doping and surface oxygen vacancies self-doping.

Significantly Enhanced Visible Light Photoelectrochemical Activity in TiO2 Nanowire Arrays by Nitrogen Implantation

Abstract:Titanium oxide (TiO2) represents one of most widely studied materials for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting but is severely limited by its poor efficiency in the visible light range. Here, we report a significant enhancement of visible light photoactivity in nitrogen-implanted TiO2 (N-TiO2) nanowire arrays. Our systematic studies show that a post-implantation thermal annealing treatment can selectively enrich the substitutional nitrogen dopants, which is essential for activating the nitrogen implanted TiO2 to achieve greatly enhanced visible light photoactivity. An incident photon to electron conversion efficiency (IPCE) of ∼10% is achieved at 450 nm in N-TiO2 without any other cocatalyst, far exceeding that in pristine TiO2 nanowires (∼0.2%). The integration of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) cocatalyst with N-TiO2 can further increase the IPCE at 450 nm to ∼17% and deliver an unprecedented overall photocurrent density of 1.9 mA/cm2, by integrating the IPCE spectrum with standard AM 1.5G solar s...
Facile Synthesis of Ni-doped TiO2ultrathin Nanobelt Arrays with Enhanced Photocatalytic Performance

Abstract:Because of the high specific surface area and enhanced charge migration, TiO2 with unique belt-like nanostructures finds promising applications in various fields such as photocatalysis, dye-sensitized solar cells, gas sensors, and Li-ion batteries. In the current study, a solution combustion procedure was firstly adopted to prepare a black water-proof precursor. The black precursor interacted with H2O2 at ambient temperature, achieving a precursor solution that is capable of fabricating hydrogen titanate (H2Ti2O5·H2O) nanobelt arrays on metallic Ti substrates at 60 °C. Subsequent calcination in air at 400 °C achieved arrays of ultrathin anatase TiO2 nanobelts of ca. 2–4 nm in thickness. The addition of nickel nitrate in the combustion solution achieved the Ni-doping into the resultant TiO2 nanobelts, which did not alter the nanobelt structure but significantly reduced the band gap from 3.2 eV to 2.9 eV. When compared with the commonly alkali-hydrothermal synthesized anatase TiO2 nanobelts, the present ultrathin nanobelts exhibited much improved photocatalytic activity when utilized to assist photodegradation of rhodamine B in water. The ultrathin nanobelt structure is believed to contribute to the high specific surface area, the much reduced charge migration path, and the enhanced charge transport along the longitudinal direction. The appropriate Ni-doping further enhanced the photocatalytic performance, because of the increased light harvesting efficiency and reduced charge recombination.

Abstract:Solar-driven water splitting to produce hydrogen is an important solution to the problem of energy shortage and environmental pollution. The photolysis of water to produce hydrogen requires highly efficient and stable photocatalysts, and the anode used as catalyst for oxygen evolution is a bottleneck in this process. In this paper, the a-TNTAs/Ni2P composite photo-anode was constructed by electrodeposition to anchor the Ni2P co-catalyst for oxygen evolution at the active site of TiO2 nanotube arrays (TNTAs). The a-TNTAs/Ni2P delivered excellent oxygen evolution at a photocurrent density of 1.058 mA cm-2, an improvement of 2.78 times, 13.2 times, and 15.8 times over a-TNTAs, TNTAs/Ni2P, and TNTAs photo-anodes, respectively. The Mott-Schottky curve showed that Ni2P as co-catalyst for oxygen evolution accelerated the rates of separation and transfer of the photogenerated electrons. This research provides a simple and efficient method to promote the OER performance of optical semiconductors.

Abstract:The increasing demand for renewable and substantial energy has aroused the development of semiconductors for applications in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, we demonstrate the synthesis of the nitrogen-doping NiFeOOH modified TiO 2 nanorods (N-TiO 2 /NiFeOOH) as photoanode. The N-TiO 2 /NiFeOOH photoanode has the core-shell structure. The "core" is nitrogen doping TiO 2 nanorods with anatase and rutile phase while the "shell" is NiFeOOH layers. The XPS characterization presents the oxygen vacancy (O v ) increase with the substitutional N sites increase. The trends of applied bias photon-to-current efficiency are agreed with the substitutional N sites and O v atomic content. That infers that the substitutional N sites affect the O v content, which could function as the active sites for the enhanced PEC properties by increase the charge separation/injection efficiencies. After NiFeOOH modification, that leads to an enhanced photocurrent density of 3.61 mA cm −2 for the N-TiO 2 /NiFeOOH photoanode, which is 1.2 and 2.4 times larger than that of the N-TiO 2 and original TiO 2 photoanodes. The enhancement in the PEC performance and efficiency are attribute to the synergetic effect of the substitutional N doping for the defect modulation and NiFeOOH modification for the oxygen evolution reaction kinetics promotion, thus enhance the charge separation/injection efficiencies at the interface between the N-TiO 2 /NiFeOOH photoanode and the electrolyte.

Abstract:Herein, we present the decoration of NiFeCoAlOOH nanoparticles onto titanium doped nanoporous hematite (Ti-PH) utilizing a simple electroless ligand-controlled oxidation method for photoelectrochemical water splitting. Owing to the improved oxygen evolution reaction kinetics and reduced charge transfer resistance, the resulting Ti-PH/NiFeCoAlOOH photoanode presents an excellent photocurrent density of 2.46 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. RHE and good stability compared to Ti-PH or bare hematite. Furthermore, the onset potential of the photocurrent density is shifted cathodically by ∼60 mV with reference to the titanium doped nanoporous hematite. This work offers a promising method for designing high-performance, stable, and inexpensive catalysts for photoelectrochemical applications.

Abstract:In this work, a solution combustion followed by dissolution in hydrogen peroxide is adopted to achieve a precursor for decorating anatase TiO2 nanosheets along single-crystalline rutile TiO2 nanorods, which achieves balsam-pear-like core/shell nanorod arrays with enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting. The enhanced photoelectrochemical performance is attributed to the novel nanoarchitecture, which can simultaneously offer a high surface area, enhanced light-harvesting, a rutile/anatase junction for charge carrier separation and a conductive pathway for charge carrier collection. The photoanode design can also give hints to other functional materials.

Abstract:Manganese and iron co-doped TiO 2 nanotube arrays (TNTs) are grown on Ti foil by in situ electro-anodization method and employed for overall photoelectrochemical water splitting. The band gap of TiO 2 is reduced from 3.3 eV to 3.1 eV with co-doping of Mn and Fe in Mn/Fe-TNT@Ti sample. Annealing Mn/Fe-TNT@Ti at 500 °C leads to the formation of trap states associated with the Fe 3+ and Mn 2+ ions present in the TiO 2 lattice. The anatase structure of TNTs in Mn/Fe-TNT@Ti-500 sample is confirmed by XRD and Raman spectroscopy. An anodic shift in the onset potential from 0.2 V RHE to 0.08 V RHE is observed in Mn/Fe-TNT@Ti-500 sample compared to Mn/FeTNT@Ti sample. The overall photocurrent density at −0.4 V RHE is higher for Mn/Fe-TNT@Ti-500 sample (331μA/cm 2 ) than Mn/Fe-TNT@Ti sample (251μA/cm 2 ). The oxygen evolution activity shows similar trend with Mn/Fe-TNT@Ti-500 displaying a photocurrent density of 13.6 μA/cm 2 at 1.23 V RHE . The anodic photocurrent density of Mn/Fe-TNT@Ti-500 sample is six times higher than that of the Mn/Fe-TNT@Ti at 0.8 V RHE . The incident photon to current efficiency (IPCE) measurements show that the photon absorption and conversion efficiency of the Mn/Fe-TNT@Ti-500 sample are significantly higher than that of the Mn/Fe-TNT@Ti sample. The results of this study complement the DFT calculations carried out with the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) technique. This work demonstrates possibility of designing composite materials for efficient photoreduction studies using n-type titanium nanotubes as precursors.

Abstract:This work firstly introduced Si quantum dots (QDs) to modify TiO2 nanotube arrays for photoelectrochemical water splitting. A systematic study using surface and optical characterization tools reveals the nature of the combination of Si QDs and TiO2 nanotube arrays. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results show that Si QDs were assembled on the surface of vertically aligned TiO2 nanotube arrays. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra indicate the improved visible light absorbance. The enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting was demonstrated under visible light illumination and the photocurrent density was 1.6 times larger than that of pristine TiO2 electrodes. Electrochemical impedance behavior was measured for the electrodes and the impedance is slightly reduced for the nanocomposite electrode with the presence of Si QDs. This work demonstrated that Si QDs would be a novel and effective choice for improving the utilization of visible light for TiO2 nanotubes. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Enhanced light-driven photoelectrochemical catalysis of water splitting by TiO 2 nanotubes grown on acid-etched titanium foils

Abstract:Titanium dioxide with suitable band edges is one of promising photocatalysts for water splitting. Nanotubes with one-dimensional structure can induce efficient charge transfers and hollow centers can provide large surface area for surface reactions. Modifying Ti foils for anodization can enhance light utilization of TiO 2 nanotube photoelectrodes. In this work, it is firstly to fabricate TiO 2 nanotube photoelectrodes on acid-etched Ti foils by anodization (MNT) for photoelectrochemical catalyzing water splitting. Different acid-etching durations are applied on Ti foils to induce various rugged surfaces. The resulting photoelectrodes present largely enhanced light utilization than that fabricated by the pristine Ti foil. The anodization duration is also optimized to find suitable lengths of MNT. The smallest overpotential of 524.7 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 and Tafel slope of 167 mV/dec are obtained for the optimal MNT photoelectrode. The TiO 2 nanotubes grown on the pristine Ti foil shows the overpotential of 679.3 mV at 10 mA/cm 2 and Tafel slope of 285 mV/dec. This result opens a blueprint for raising the photocatalytic ability by simply modifying the surface property of the conductive substrate. Other modifications may be applicable to enhance the roughness of Ti foils for growing more efficient MNT array as photocatalysis of water splitting.

Abstract:TiO 2 has been widely used in photocatalytic water splitting, but its wide band gap and easy recombination carrier limit its further application. In this work, highly ordered TiO 2 nanotube arrays (TiO 2 NBs) were prepared by anodic oxidation, and more oxygen vacancies were provided by local amorphous. The increase of oxygen vacancy improves the carrier separation efficiency, and the array structure achieves faster electron transport. In addition, WO 3 semiconductor was coupled with TiO 2 to construct heterojunction, expand the range of light absorption, and enhance the electron–hole pair separation efficiency. In addition, by introducing co-catalyst CoPi, the active site of the reaction was increased, and the catalytic reaction efficiency was improved kinetically. The results show that the photocurrent of CoPi/WO 3 /TiO 2 NBs is 10.2 μ A/cm 2 , which is 1.68 times that of TiO 2 NBs.

3d Nanoflower-Structured Tio2 Photoanode For Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:In this study, 3-dimensional nanoflower structured TiO2 photoanodes were successfully grown onto tin oxide doped with fluorine substrates. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy were performed. The 3-dimensional TiO2 nanoflowers presented improved photoelectrochemical performance compared with a TiO2 layer. Meanwhile, TiO2 nanoflowers with 2.5 h preparation time substantially increased the production of H-2 compared with the TiO2 layer. The improved performance could be ascribed to the 3-dimensional nanoflower structure with many carriers and fast reaction kinetics, which enhanced light absorption and enlarged the contact area between the photoanode and electrolyte. Moreover, this nanoflower structure with trunks connected to the FTO substrate also improved the transfer of photogenerated carriers.
Enhanced Charge Separation and Transfer by BiVO 4 Heterojunction and N-Doped for TiO 2 Nanotubes during Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Photoelectrochemical water splitting for hydrogen and oxygen evolution by a TiO2 photoanode is a promising strategy for clean energy generation. The BiVO4 decorated N-Doped TiO2 nanotubes (BiVO4/TiO2–N) were synthesized by the anodization and hydrothermal procedure. The physical and chemical characterization indicates that the BiVO4 nanoparticles are successfully decorated on the surface of the TiO2–N nanotubes (∼600 nm) to form the heterojunction structure. After the nitrogen doping and BiVO4 modification of TiO2, the UV–visible light absorption ability is broadened, the band gap energy shifts from 3.2 to around 2.82 eV, and the injection and separation efficiency of charge carriers is increased. Nitrogen doping and BiVO4 modification have little effect on TiO2 crystallization. The optimal photocurrent density of BiVO4/TiO2–N reached 1.02 mA/cm2 at 1.23 VRHE, which is about 1.76-fold more than that of the TiO2 photoanodes. The mechanism studies for BiVO4/TiO2–N indicate that the key factors for boosting PEC performance are the light absorption and the charge separation enhancement by the N-doping and the n–n heterojunction by BiVO4 with the TiO2 photoanode. The mechanism for the BiVO4/TiO2–N photoanode during the PEC water splitting process is proposed for further understanding and designation.

Facile synthesis of a heterogeneous Li2TiO3/TiO2 nanocomposite with enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting

Abstract:A heterogeneous Li2TiO3/TiO2 nanocomposite was successfully prepared from anodized amorphous TiO2 nanotube arrays in CH3COOLi solution by using a facile hydrothermal method. Morphology transformation from nanotubes into diamond-shaped nanoparticles can be attributed to the water-induced dissolution and recrystallization processes of the nanotube arrays in a weak acid salt solution. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction results showed that a large amount of Li2TiO3/TiO2 diamond-shaped nanoparticles were formed on the surface of the TiO2 nanotube arrays. UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra indicated improved visible light absorbance. The enhanced photoelectrochemical water splitting was demonstrated under UV-vis light illumination, and the photocurrent density of the electrode prepared in 0.1 M CH3COOLi was greater than that of other electrodes. The semiconductor characteristics were studied using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy in detail. This work is expected to guide next studies to design and fabricate photo-catalysts for efficient photoelectrochemical water splitting.
Controlled Sn-doping in TiO2 Nanowire Photoanodes with Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Conversion.

Abstract:We demonstrate for the first time the controlled Sn-doping in TiO(2) nanowire (NW) arrays for photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Because of the low lattice mismatch between SnO(2) and TiO(2), Sn dopants are incorporated into TiO(2) NWs by a one-pot hydrothermal synthesis with different ratios of SnCl(4) and tetrabutyl titanate, and a high acidity of the reactant solution is critical to control the SnCl(4) hydrolysis rate. The obtained Sn-doped TiO(2) (Sn/TiO(2)) NWs are single crystalline with a rutile structure, and the incorporation of Sn in TiO(2) NWs is well controlled at a low level, that is, 1-2% of Sn/Ti ratio, to avoid phase separation or interface scattering. PEC measurement on Sn/TiO(2) NW photoanodes with different Sn doping ratios shows that the photocurrent increases first with increased Sn doping level to >2.0 mA/cm(2) at 0 V vs Ag/AgCl under 100 mW/cm(2) simulated sunlight illumination up to ~100% enhancement compared to our best pristine TiO(2) NW photoanodes and then decreases at higher Sn doping levels. Subsequent annealing of Sn/TiO(2) NWs in H(2) further improves their photoactivity with an optimized photoconversion efficiency of ~1.2%. The incident-photon-to-current conversion efficiency shows that the photocurrent increase is mainly ascribed to the enhancement of photoactivity in the UV region, and the electrochemical impedance measurement reveals that the density of n-type charge carriers can be significantly increased by the Sn doping. These Sn/TiO(2) NW photoanodes are highly stable in PEC conversion and thus can serve as a potential candidate for pure TiO(2) materials in a variety of solar energy driven applications.

Abstract:The present work reports on the enhancement of TiO2 nanotubes photoelectrochemical water splitting rate by decorating the nanostructure with an amine layer in a hydrothermal process using diethylenetriamine (DETA). The aminate coated TiO2 tubes show a stable improvement of the photoresponse in both UV and visible light spectrum and under hydrothermal conditions, 4-fold increase of the photoelectrochemical water splitting rate is observed. From intensity modulated photocurrent spectroscopy (IMPS) measurements significantly faster electron transport times are observed indicating a surface passivating effect of the N-decoration.

With Ti foil as both the conducting substrate and the Ti3+/Ti4+ source, one‐dimensional blue Ti3+/TiO2 crystals were grown by a one‐step hydrothermal reaction. The concentration of Ti3+ was further tuned by N2H4 reduction, leading to a greater photoelectrocatalytic activity, as evidenced by a high photocurrent density of 0.64 mA cm−2 at 1.0 V vs RHE under simulated AM 1.5 G illumination. Electron paramagnetic resonance and Mott–Schottky plots reveal that higher charge‐carrier density owing to N2H4 reduction contributes to the observed improvement. The generality of this synthesis method was demonstrated by its effectiveness in improving the performance of other types of photoanodes. By integrating the advantages of the 1D TiO2 architecture with those of Ti3+ self‐doping, this work provides a versatile tool toward the fabrication of efficient TiO2 photoanodes.
Facile Fabrication of Three-Dimensional Interconnected Nanoporous N-TiO 2 for Efficient Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) interconnected porous architectures are expected to perform well in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting due to their high specific surface area as well as favourable porous properties and interconnections. In this work, we demonstrated the facile fabrication of 3D interconnected nanoporous N-doped TiO2 (N-TiO2 network) by annealing the anodized 3D interconnected nanoporous TiO2 (TiO2 network) in ammonia atmosphere. The obtained N-TiO2 network exhibited broadened light absorption, and abundant, interconnected pores for improving charge separation, which was supported by the reduced charge transfer resistance. With these merits, a remarkably high photocurrent density at 1.23V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) was realized for the N-TiO2 network without any co-catalysts or sacrificial reagents, and the photostability can be assured after long term illumination. In view of its simplicity and efficiency, this structure promises for perspective PEC applications.
Electrochemical reduction induced self-doping of oxygen vacancies into Ti–Si–O nanotubes as efficient photoanode for boosted photoelectrochemical water splitting

Abstract:Self-doping of oxygen vacancies (VO) states into TiO2-based nanotubes was an efficient way for improving photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting properties. Here we induced oxygen vacancies into Si-doped TiO2 (Ti–Si–O) nanotubes on Ti–Si alloy via a facile electrochemical surface reduction, and applied it for PEC water splitting. Systematic studies revealed that the self-doped oxygen vacancies not only promoted optical absorption of the doped nanotubes but also enhanced separation-transport processes of the photo-generated charge carriers, and thus resulted in improved PEC water splitting properties. The VO/Ti–Si–O co-doping system exhibited a higher photocurrent density of 1.63 mA/cm2 at 0 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Corresponding solar-to-hydrogen efficiency could reach 0.81%, which was about 5.4 times that of undoped TiO2. It's believed that elements doping and oxygen vacancies self-doping synergistic strategy employed in this work, may provide theoretical and practical significance for designing and fabricating efficient TiO2-based nanostructures photoanodes in PEC water splitting for boosted solar-to-hydrogen conversion.

Abstract:Construction of high-efficient and low-cost heterostructure photocatalyst is crucial for hydrogen production in solar driven water splitting. Herein, g-C3N4-modified TiO2 nanotubes (TNTs) with confined Pt nanoparticles were prepared via a facile two-step process. The results of structure characterizations by XRD, TEM, and XPS reveal that Pt nanoparticles with the average size of 2–3 nm are embedded in the inner cavity of the TiO2 nanotube, and amorphous g-C3N4 is attached to the outer wall of anatase TNTs. The as-prepared g-C3N4/TNTs@Pt ternary composite displays an enhanced visible light-induced absorbance capacity and improved charge carrier recombination rate than that of pure TNTs. The photocatalytic performance is evaluated by hydrogen evolution from water splitting by using methanol as sacrifice agent under solar light illumination. Compared with TNTs@Pt and g-C3N4/Pt photocatalysts, the as-prepared ternary nanocomposite exhibits the highest photocatalytic performance with a H2 evolution rate of 15.36 mmol h−1 g−1. A possible mechanism of photocatalytic H2 production over the ternary g-C3N4/TNTs@Pt composite is also proposed. This work not only provides a promising low-cost heterostructure candidate for water splitting, but also paves the way to rational design high-performance photocatalysts in solar-to-fuel conversion.
