Abstract:A single-frequency ytterbium fiber laser was demonstrated by introducing a loop mirror filter, a polarization controller (PC), and dual-cascaded fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in linear laser cavity. The loop mirror with unpumped ytterbium fiber as a narrow bandwidth filter discriminated and selected laser longitudinal modes efficiently. The spatial hole burning effect was restrained by adjusting PC appropriately. Dual closely cascaded FBGs as the output coupler, acting as an etalon, expanded the operation range of single frequency. Output power up to 18 mW at 1064 nm were obtained under the launched pump power of 107 mW at 976 nm, the optical-optical conversion efficiency was about 16.8%; the slope efficiency was about 20%.

Abstract:By using a loop mirror filter, a novel wavelength-tunable single-frequency ytterbium-doped fiber laser is developed to select single longitudinal modes in a linear cavity. The output wavelength could be tuned 2.4nm intervals range from 1063.3 to 1065.7nm with the temperature change of the fiber Bragg grating. The maximum output power could reach 32mW while the pump power increases to 120mW. The corresponding optical-to-optical conversion efficiency is 26.7% and the slope efficiency is 33.9%, respectively. The output power fluctuation is below 2%, and its highest signal-to-noise ratio is 60 dB.

Abstract:A pulsed laser for laser guide stars with a 100 MHz repetition rate and 1 ns pulse width was achieved by external modulation of a continuous wave (CW) laser with a 70 kHz spectrum width. The laser is amplified first by two fiber pre-amplifiers and then by four solid-state power amplifiers. The laser achieves gains as high as 36 dB in the fiber pre-amplifiers due to the long gain medium length. The output power from the fiber amplifiers is 2.1 W. The laser receives further amplification in the solid-state amplifiers and retains good beam quality by aberration compensation. The final output average power is 102.9 W, and the beam quality factor M-2 is 1.46. The laser reaches high power without spectrum width and pulse width broadening at the 100 MHz repetition rate. The spectrum width of the pulsed laser is less than 0.8 GHz, which is close to the Fourier transform limit. Such a laser with single-frequency, high-repetition, and high-power features along with good beam quality will be valuable for many research areas. (C) 2014 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Single frequency 1083nm ytterbium fiber master oscillator power amplifier system was demonstrated. The oscillator was a linear fiber cavity with loop mirror filter and polarization controller. The loop mirror with unpumped ytterbium fiber as a narrow bandwidth filter discriminated and selected laser longitudinal modes efficiently. Spatial hole burning effect was restrained by adjusting polarization controller appropriately in the linear cavity. The amplifier was 5 m ytterbium doped fiber pumped by 976nm pigtail coupled laser diode. The linewidth of the single frequency laser was about 2 KHz. Output power up to 177 mW was produced under the launched pump power of 332 mW.

Abstract:A high-slope-efficiency single-frequency (SF) ytterbium-doped fiber laser, based on a Sagnac loop mirror filter (LMF), was demonstrated. It combined a simple linear cavity with a Sagnac LMF that acted as a narrow-bandwidth filter to select the longitudinal modes. And we introduced a polarization controller to restrain the spatial hole burning effect in the linear cavity. The system could operate at a stable SF oscillating at 1064 nm with the obtained maximum output power of 32 mW. The slope efficiency was found to be primarily dependent on the reflectivity of the fiber Bragg grating. The slope efficiency of multi-longitudinal modes was higher than 45%, and the highest slope efficiency of the single longitudinal mode we achieved was 33.8%. The power stability and spectrum stability were <2% and <0.1%, respectively, and the signal-to-noise ratio measured was around 60 dB.

Abstract:An ytterbium-doped stretched-pulse mode-locked fiber oscillator was fabricated by applying a nonlinear amplifier loop mirror (NALM). The fiber cavity was built using a large-mode area (LMA) polarization-maintaining (PM) double-cladding (DC) fiber. The central wavelength of the generated 24.7 MHz laser can be modified from 1034 to 1104 nm by tuning the intra-cavity loss. The output power of this laser with a wavelength of 1104 nm at the transmission and reflection ports is 7.61 and 0.33 mW, respectively. The corresponding compressed pulse durations are 192 and 187 fs, which are 1.54 and 1.02 times the Fourier-transform-limited pulse duration, respectively.

Abstract:A widely tunable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) ytterbium-doped fiber laser is experimentally demonstrated, which is achieved by combining a fiber Lyot filter and a saturable absorber in a ring cavity. Stable SLM operation from 1045 nm to 1076 nm is obtained by properly adjusting the polarization state. The output power reaches 7.5 dBm with a fluctuation of less than 2 dB. The optical signal-to-noise ratio is 42.5 dB with a fluctuation of less than 6 dB in this wavelength range.

Abstract:An all-normal dispersion tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is experimentally investigated. The laser employs an all-polarization-maintaining figure-8 cavity consisted of main loop and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. At 1030 nm, the stable mode-locked laser is initiated by adjusting two loops' pump power, which delivers pulse width of 17.61 ps, repetition frequency of 4.133 MHz, and average power of 2.151 mW. A tunable filter is employed in the cavity to select the laser wavelength as well as force the laser operating in all-normal dispersion dissipative regime. The wavelength tuning range is 1015-1080 nm while the pulse duration ranges from 7.86 ps to 17.80 ps.

Abstract:A compact 1064 nm linearly polarized low-noise single-frequency fiber laser has been demonstrated. An over 200 mW stable polarization-maintaining (PM) single-longitudinal-mode laser was achieved from an 8-mm-long custom-built non-PM Yb3+-doped phosphate fiber. The linear polarization extinction ratio (LPER) is larger than 30 dB. The measured relative intensity noise (RIN) is less than -125 dB/Hz at frequencies over 700 kHz. Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a nanosecond square pulse ytterbium doped fiber laser in the 1060 nm band. The laser is based on the figure-8 structure and has a tunable pulse bandwidth from 3 ns to beyond 100 ns, showing excellent temporal tuning ability. The experimental results show that a steady square pulse can be generated when the parameters of the cavity are chosen appropriately.

Abstract:We report a short‐cavity fiber laser configured with a high‐concentration erbium‐doped fiber with stable singlefrequency output. The fiber laser utilized a fiber Bragg grating inscribed into a piece of polarization‐maintaining optical fiber as the output coupler to ensure a stable single frequency laser output. The polarization‐maintaining optical fiber used in the output coupler is intended to provide the linearly polarized singlefrequency laser output. The fiber laser had a maximum hundreds of micron‐Watt level power output pumped by a fiber pigtailed laser diode working at 980 nm. Mode hopping phenomenon was eliminated in such a short‐cavity fiber laser. Laser frequency stability less than 400 MHz over 10 minutes was obtained. Abstract:A compact frequency-modulation Q-switched single-frequency fiber laser is demonstrated at 1083 nm. The short linear resonant cavity consists of a 12 mm long homemade Yb3+-doped phosphate fiber and a pair of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in which the Q-switching and the frequency excursion is achieved by a tensile-induced period modulation. Over 375 MHz frequency-tuning range is achieved with a modulation frequency varying from tens to hundreds of kilohertz. The highest peak power of the output pulse reaching 6.93 W at the repetition rate of 10 kHz is obtained.

Abstract:A linearly frequency-modulated, actively Q-switched, single-frequency ring fiber laser based on injection seeding from an ultra-short cavity is demonstrated at 1083 nm. A piezoelectric transducer is employed to obtain linearly frequency-modulating performance and over 1.05 GHz frequency-tuning range is achieved with a modulating frequency reaching tens of kilohertz. A maximum peak power of the stable output pulse is over 3.83 W during frequency-modulating process. This type of pulsed fiber laser provides a promising candidate for coherent LIDAR in the measurement of thermosphere.

Abstract:We demonstrate a self-starting 700 MHz repetition rate Yb:fiber laser incorporated with a phase biased nonlinear amplifying loop mirror as an artificial saturable absorber. The laser delivers a maximum power of 150 mW and a pulse width of 215 fs at a pump power of 710 mW. The integration of relative intensity noise (RIN) between 10 Hz and 10 MHz results in a minimum integrated RIN of 0.015%. The phase noise of the fundamental repetition rate was also characterized at different net-cavity dispersion. Although the laser is made of nonpolarization maintaining fiber, the mode locking sustains over two weeks in open air, showing its environmental stability.

Abstract:A 1560 nm high-power linearly-polarized all-fiber single-frequency narrow-linewidth laser with near diffraction-limited beam quality is demonstrated. The Yb–Er energy transfer efficiency and the ability of the signal laser to capture pump light have been improved by specifically choosing the pumping wavelength and the input signal power in the final power amplifier stage of this laser system. Under the off-peak absorption pumping wavelength of 940 nm, along with the maximum input signal power of 6 W, a maximum output power of 102 W with a slope efficiency of 40.5% is acquired. At the highest output power status, a polarization extinction ratio (PER) of 15.5 dB, a linewidth of 3.05 kHz, and a beam quality of Mx2 = 1.14, My2 = 1.06 are obtained, respectively. This advanced single-frequency fiber laser has great potential for the long-range coherent Doppler lidar and the next generation of gravitational wave detection.

Abstract:A wavelength-tunable erbium-doped fiber laser with asymmetric narrow band fiber loop mirror(FLM) is proposed.The erbium-doped active fiber is pumped by 980nm light.The resonator is composed of a common FLM and a narrow band FLM which contains a high-birefringence FLM,a polarization controller(PC) and a coupler.By changing the status of the PC in the cavity,the reflection spectrum of the FLM can be adjusted so that the laser operates in single longitudinal mode,and the output wavelength can be tuned from 1527nm to 1535nm,about 8nm tuning range.Experiments show that the maximum output power is 4mW when the laser is pumped by 980nm laser-diode.The Side Mode Suppression Ratio(SMSR) is larger than 20dB,and Full Width Half Maximum(FWHM) is 0.2nm.

Abstract:A compact, low-noise, single-frequency fiber laser by using a newly developed Yb3+ heavily doped single-mode phosphate glass fiber has been demonstrated. Over 400 mW stable continuous wave single transverse and longitudinal mode laser at 1.06 μm was achieved from a 0.8 cm long active fiber. The measured slope efficiency and estimated quantum efficiency of laser emission are 72.7% and 93%, respectively. The signal-to-noise ratio is higher than 72 dB, and the linewidth of the fiber laser is less than 7 kHz, while the measured relative intensity noise is less than −130 dB/Hz at frequencies of over 1.5 MHz.
