Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) has received considerable interest for electrochemical energy storage and conversion. In this work, we demonstrate a material on synthesis of a unique hierarchical hollow structure by growing layered MoS2 nanosheets on assembled graphene nanotubes via a template-sacrificed approach (named as graphene@MoS2 nanotubes). As a proof of concept, the graphene@MoS2 nanotubes as the anode materials of lithium-ion batteries exhibit excellent cycling performance at 400 mA g(-1) up to 120 cycles without considerable capacity loss (830 mA h g(-1), with 96.5% capacity retention) and high rate behavior (502 mA h g(-1) at 2000 mA g(-1)), which is far beyond than that of the pure MoS2 nanosheets and even graphene@MoS2 nanosheets composites. Furthermore, combined with in-situ TEM lithiation experiments, we find a novel conversion reaction mechanism of MoS2 anodes that Li ions induce structural destruction in c-direction following a dynamic layer-by-layer dissociation with Mo/Li2S composites left, rather than well-known multistep reaction in bulk phase. The first-principles computations verify that the surfacial relaxation of Li2S to form an anti-fluorite structure on higher electric conductive LixMoS(2) surface is the primarily thermodynamic driving force for activating the above-mentioned reaction. These results are envisaged to be helpful for designing durable conversion-type MoS2 anodes by surface engineering, and the hierarchical tubular feature further points out a new protocol for graphene based hybrid anode for enhanced lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Hierarchical structured carbon@MoS2 (C@MoS2) microspheres and nanospheres composed of carbon-sandwiched monolayered MoS2 building blocks are synthesized through a facile one-pot polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) micelle-assisted hydrothermal route. The dimension and carbon content of C@MoS2 spheres are effectively controlled by singly adjusting the concentration of PVP, which plays the dual functions of soft-template and carbon source. As the anode materials of Li-ion batteries, C@MoS2 nanospheres present considerably higher capacity, better rate behavior and cycling stability than C@MoS2 microspheres. The reasons are attributed to the unique interconnected nanospherical morphology and the internal hierarchical construction of C@MoS2 nanospheres with expanded MoS2/carbon interlayer spacing.

Abstract:A facile strategy was designed for the in situ synthesis of MoS2 nanospheres on functionalized graphene nanoplates (MoS2@f-graphene) for use as lithium-ion battery anode materials. A modified Birch reduction was used to exfoliate graphite into few-layer graphene followed by modification with functional groups. Compared to the most common approach of mixing MoS2 and reduced graphene oxide, our approach provides a way to circumvent the harsh oxidation and destruction of the carbon basal planes. In this process, alkylcarboxyl functional groups on the functionalized graphene (f-graphene) serve as sites where MoS2 nanospheres crystallize, and thus create bridges between the MoS2 nanospheres and the graphene layers to effectively facilitate electronic transport and to avoid both the aggregation of MoS2 and the restacking of graphene. As anode materials, this unique MoS2@f-graphene heterostructure has a high specific capacity of 1173 mAh g-1 at a current density of 100 mA g-1 and a good rate capacity (910 mAh g-1 at 1600 mA g-1).

Abstract:Herein, MoO2 quantum dots (QDs; <5 nm) are synthesized through a one-step solvothermal process. MoO2 QD-bonded graphene sheets (MoO2-QDs@RGO) are facilely produced and can be further converted through sulfidation into MoS2 nanoparticle-bonded graphene sheets (MoS2-NPs@RGO). The novel MoO2-QDs@RGO electrodes demonstrate exceptionally attractive lithium storage capability (e.g., 1257 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1), being close to the highest values ever reported for a MoO2-based lithium ion battery electrode), rate capability, and cycle stability. Moreover, the MoS2-NPs@RGO delivered a superior capacity (1497 mA h g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1)) with outstanding rate retention and cycling stability. The superior lithium storage capabilities are ascribed to the synergetic effects of the high-surface-area graphene sheets, the well-dispersed MoS2 nanoparticles, and their strong bonding with each other, which effectively prevents aggregation of MoS2 while the composite architecture allows fast transport of electrons and ions.

Abstract:Reversible specific capacity and rate performance are required for MoS2 nanomaterials as lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) anodes. Here we reported a novel MoS2 structure with nano-size subgrain microstructure and thus enhanced electrochemical performance produced by a low-temperature hydrothermal synthesis technique. Ammonia solution treatment was proved feasible to remove the S-2(2-) and MoO3 impurities from the composite produces. After purification of the MoS2 prepared at a temperature of 160 degrees C, the (002) interlayer spacing was similar to 0.69 nm. In addition, the MoS2 sheets consisted of nano-size subgrains, with Mo enrichment at grain boundaries. As a result, a reversible specific capacity of 826 mAh g(-1) at a current density of 0.1 A g(-1) and rate performance of 700 mAh g(-1) at 1 A g(-1) were achieved. This shows that high purity MoS2 nanomaterials prepared via ammonia solution may act as promising materials for high performance anodes. (C) 2019 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Single-Layer Mos2/Graphene Dispersed in Amorphous Carbon: Towards High Electrochemical Performances in Rechargeable Lithium Ion Batteries

Abstract:Here we report a facile process to synthesize the novel nanocomposites comprised of single-layer MoS2, graphene and amorphous carbon (SL-MoS2/G@a-C) by a hydrothermal route employing sodium molybdate, sulfocarbamide, as-prepared graphene oxide and glucose as starting materials and then annealing in H-2/N-2 atmosphere at 800 degrees C. The samples were systematically investigated using X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. It was demonstrated that the single-layer MoS2 and graphene in the composites dispersed highly uniformly in the amorphous carbon. The mechanism of the formation of SL-MoS2/G@a-C nanocomposites was investigated. It was found that the SL-MoS2/G@a-C nanocomposites exhibited very high reversible capacity with excellent cyclic stability and high-rate capability as anode materials of Li-ion batteries. Among three SL-MoS2/G@a-C samples, the SL-MoS2/G@a-C (1 : 1) nanocomposite delivered the largest reversible capacity (1116 mAh g(-1)) with negligible fading of the capacity after 250 cycles, and still retained a high specific capacity of 850 mAh g(-1) and good cyclic stability at a high current density of 1000 mA g(-1).
One-Pot Hydrothermal Synthesis and Electrochemical Performance of Subspheroidal Core–Shell Structure MoS2/C Composite as Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its distinctive graphene-like structure and high specific capacity. However, its commercial application is hindered by the severe volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation and poor conductivity. In this paper, we report a facile one-pot enhanced hydrothermal synthesis strategy to prepare high-performance MoS2/C composite materials. The results indicate that the as-prepared MoS2/C composite is a subspheroidal core–shell structure material, with uniform coating, good particle dispersion, and an average grain size of approximately 80 nm. The morphology of the composite remained unchanged even after annealing at 500 °C for 2 h. The addition of glucose can accelerate the nucleation and growth of MoS2, and higher hydrothermal temperatures can improve the product yield. The addition of PVP has little effect on the yield, but significantly reduces the particle size. The XPS analysis reveals that the MoO3 may be generated as an intermediate product during the hydrothermal process. The electrochemical test results show that the unannealed MoS2/C samples exhibit discharge-specific capacities of 705.2 mAh·g−1 and 625.7 mAh·g−1 after the first cycle and the 100th cycle, respectively, at a current density of 500 mA·g−1, with a capacity retention rate of 88.7%. In contrast, the specific capacity of the MoS2/C specimens after annealing at 500 °C for 2 h shows a tendency to decrease and then slowly increase during the cycles, and the discharge specific capacity is 582.3 mAh·g−1 after the 100th cycle, which is lower than that of the unheated sample. The impedance analysis reveals that the lithium-ion diffusion coefficient of the MoS2/C material without calcination is 2.11 × 10−18 cm·s−2, which is superior to that of the annealed MoS2/C and pristine MoS2 samples. This characteristic is favorable for lithiation/delithiation during the charge/discharge process.

Abstract:A facile and scalable process was developed for the synthesis of single-layer MoS2-graphene nanosheet (SL-MoS2-GNS) composites based on the concurrent reduction of (NH4)(2)MoS4 and graphene oxide sheets by hydrazine in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), followed by annealing in a N-2 atmosphere. The morphology and microstructure of the composites were examined by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The formation process for the SL-MoS2-GNS composites was also investigated. The SL-MoS2-GNS composites delivered a large reversible capacity and good cycle stability as a Li-ion battery anode. In particular, the composites easily surpassed MoS2 in terms of rate performance and cycle stability at high current densities. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the GNS in the composite not only reduced the contact resistance in the electrode but also significantly facilitated the electron transfer in lithiation and delithiation reactions. The good electrochemical performance of the composites for reversible Li+ storage could be attributed to the synergy between the functions of SL-MoS2 and GNS.

Abstract:Porous NiO nanosheets prepared by hydrothermal method were tested as anode materials for lithium ion batteries. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images showed that the thickness of the sheet is about 100 nm with nanopores on the planes, forming a two-dimensional network structure. The electrochemical measurement showed that the porous NiO nanosheets had better electrochemical performance than bulk NiO. The improvement of the electrochemical properties could be attributed to its unique two-dimensional network structure.

Abstract:A hierarchical MoS2 architecture composed of nanosheet-assembled microspheres with an expanded interplanar spacing of the (002) planes was successfully prepared via a simple hydrothermal reaction. Electron microscopy studies revealed formation of the MoS2 microspheres with an average diameter of 230 nm. It was shown that the hierarchical structure of MoS2 microspheres possesses both the merits of nanometer-sized building blocks and micrometer-sized assemblies, which offer high surface area for fast kinetics and buffers the volume expansion during lithium insertion/deinsertion, respectively. The micrometer-sized assemblies were found to contribute to the enhanced electrochemical stabilities of the electrode materials. The mentioned advantages of the MoS2 electrode prepared in this work allowed enhanced cyclability and high rate capability of the material. Along with this, the material delivered a high initial discharge capacity of 1206 mAh g−1 and a reversible discharge capacity of 653 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g−1. Furthermore, the material delivered a high reversible capacity of 480 mAh g−1 at a high current density of 1000 mA g−1.

Abstract:A unique monodispersed MnCO3/graphene nanosheet composite is synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal method and used as anode of lithium-ion battery. X-ray diffraction patterns show the typical rhombohedral structure of MnCO3. A transmission electron micrograph reveals that MnCO3 is evenly distributed on the graphene nanosheet surface with a uniform diameter of 100 nm. Electrochemical performance results show that the specific discharge capacities of MnCO3/graphene nanosheet composite remain above 1015.9 mAh g−1 at a rate of 0.2 C after 85 cycles in the potential window of 0.01–2.0 V and even at a high rate of 1.0 C this parameter remains at 683.5 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles. Thus, the composite also exhibits favorable rate performance. The excellent reversible capacities are attributed to the highly dispersed and large nanosheet structure of the composite, which may not only facilitate the fast transport of Li+ ions between the electrode and electrolyte but also provide enough surfaces to accommodate extra Li+ ions that contribute to partial interfacial storage capacities. Additionally, graphene nanosheet can effectively improve electrical conductivity of the composite. Therefore, MnCO3/graphene nanosheet composite can be a great potential anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:We report on the design and Li-ion battery anode application of N-doped graphene/porous g-C3N4 nanosheets supporting layered-MoS2 hybrid. Few-layer MoS2 nanosheets are highly dispersed on the N-doped graphene/porous g-C3N4 nanosheet matrix, forming a two-dimensional multilayered nanostructure. Benefiting from the unique structure, the hybrid nanosheets exhibit superior electrochemical performance, including excellent cycling stability (maintaining 91% capacity after 100 cycles), a high rate capability (retaining 83% capacity from 50mAg−1 to 500mAg−1), and a considerably large capacity (achieving more than 800mAhg−1 at 100mAg−1).

Abstract:A facile one-pot hydrothermal method has been developed for the preparation of carbon-coated MoO2 nanocrystals. The annealed MoO2-C nanocomposite consists of interconnected MoO2@C nanocrystals. When evaluated for lithium storage capabilities, these MoO2@C nanocrystals exhibit high specific capacities (similar to 640 mA h g(-1) at 200 mA g(-1) and similar to 57.5 mA h g(-1) at 400 mA g(-1)) and excellent cycling stability. In view of the excellent lithium storage properties and the ease in large-scale preparation, the as-synthesized MoO2-C nanocomposite might be used as promising anode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Bi2S3-MoS2/graphene hybrids was synthesized via a hydrothermal method, and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) in order to develop high-performance anode materials for lithium ion battery. The effects of microstructure of hybrids on their electrochemical lithium storage properties were analyzed. Especially, the Bi2S3-MoS2/graphene with Bi to Mo of 1∶4 in molar ratio deliver a reversible specific capacity as high as 1 140 mA·h/g with stable cyclic performance. At the current density of 1 000 mA/g, its high-rate capability is 886 mA·h/g. The excellent electrochemical performance can be contributed to that MoS2 nanosheets exhibited few-layer structure with more edges and Bi2S3 nanoparticles displayed more uniform sizes. The nanostructured MoS2 and Bi2S3 were well dispersed on graphene surface. The lithium ion accommodation was enhanced, and the electrode kinetics of lithium storage was improved.

Abstract:A unique MoS2/graphene composite (MoS2/GrF) was synthesized via a facile hydrothermal method. XRD, FESEM, EDS, TEM, HRTEM, XPS, and BET analyses were performed to characterize the as-synthesized samples. The samples were demonstrated to present interesting uniform three-dimensional hierarchical heterogeneous structures where MoS2 microspheres (with an average diameter of 750 nm) penetrated the graphene layer. By the "space-confined" effect, the (002) plane of MoS2 is inhibited when grown in the interlayer of GO, which increases the interlayer spacing and improves the rate performance of the electrode. Moreover, MoS2 that grows between the graphene layers can form a good contact, reducing the contact resistance. As an anode material for lithium-ion batteries, the MoS2/GrF electrode exhibited an outstanding reversible capacity (1510 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 after 200 cycles) and excellent rate performance (~990 mAh g−1 at 1000 mA g−1).

Abstract:Metallic phase molybdenum disulfide (1 T MoS 2 ) has been extensively investigated as a promising energy storage material due to its various fascinating physical properties and potential for excellent performance. On this basis, 1 T MoS 2 nanosheets were grown on the accordion-like graphene oxide (GO) via a facile hydrothermal method for use as an anode of lithium-ion batteries. The content of 1 T phase MoS 2 was regulated by varying the amount of urea used during synthesis. When 1 g of urea was added to modulate the MoS 2 /GO (1 T MoS 2 /GO (1 g)), the metallic content of the MoS 2 reached a remarkable level of 81.12%. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of the two materials, the 1 T MoS 2 /GO (1 g) electrode has a first specific charging/discharging capacity of 1612 mA h g −1 at a current density of 0.1 A g −1 and maintained a specific capacity of 774 mA h g −1 after cycling for 60 cycles at high current density (1 A g −1 ). These results highlight enhanced electrochemical performance and cycling stability achieved with the utilization of this novel composite electrode.

Abstract:A facile process to synthesize graphene-like MoS2/amorphous carbon (a-C) composites was developed. MoS2/C composites were firstly prepared by hydrothermal method employing sodium molybdate, sulfocarbamide and glucose as starting materials. The graphene-like MoS2/a-C composites were obtained after annealing at 800 degrees C in H-2/N-2. The samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, EDS and HRTEM. It was confirmed that in the composites MoS2 has a structure of single-layer, which is named graphene-like nanostructure. The graphene-like MoS2 nanosheets were uniformly dispersed in amorphous carbon. The interlaminar distance of the adjacent graphene-like MoS2 nanosheets in the composites measured was similar to 1.0 nm. The mechanism of the formation of the graphene-like MoS2/a-C composites was investigated. The graphene-like MoS2/a-C composites exhibited high capacity and excellent cyclic stability used as anode materials for Li-ion batteries. The composite prepared by adding 1.0 g of glucose in hydrothermal solution exhibited the highest reversible capacity (962 mAh g(-1)) and excellent cyclic stability. After 100 cycles, it still retained 912 mAh g(-1). The significant improvements in the electrochemical properties of the graphene-like MoS2/a-C composites could be attributed to the graphene-like structure of the MoS2 nanosheets and the synergistic effects of graphene-like MoS2 and amorphous carbon.
