Abstract:Software-defined radio (SDR), one of solutions to realize multi-mode terminal for mobile communication standards, has attracted intensive studies. A wideband wireless receiver is designed in a 40-nm CMOS process for SDR, which can cover the frequency range from 100MHz to 2GHz. The wideband RF front-end includes a low noise amplifier (LNA), a mixer, intermediate frequency amplifier (IF AMP) and a variable gain amplifier (VGA). The focal point of the design lies in the wideband LNA. The wideband inductorless LNA with 1.1-V supply is a two-stage amplifier that can operates from 100MHz to 2GHz. The noise figure (NF) of the LNA is 2.2-2.4 dB while it can achieve gains of 24-12 dB and 0- -12 dB when working under the active mode and passive mode, respectively. The whole system provides a NF of 3.2-3.5 dB with 5.02mw power consumption.

Abstract:A highly integrated wireless receiver of subsidiary communication authorization(SCA) was investigated in this article.A novel fully integrated SCA receiver architecture suitable for CMOS process was proposed.The new receiver adopts Weaver-zero-IF down-conversion topology and two demodulations on chip.The external image-rejection filter is no needed and it greatly increases the integration and lowered the power consumption and cost.It shows the potential prospects of application.

Abstract:We explore the challenges of designing RF transceivers for an ultra-low-voltage (ULV) supply with performance that is compatible to commercial standards. The ITRS roadmap projects that the aggressive device size scaling will result in supply voltage reductions to well below IV, in particular for low-power technologies. The use of alternative energy sources also requires ULV operation in some applications. Achieving sufficient linearity with low power consumption is very challenging for the ULV mixer and baseband circuits. The on-chip LO generation and distribution is difficult due to the low-voltage device bias. We present optimized mixer and filter topologies, and a polyphase LO buffer, used in a low-power ULV receiver for 2.4GHz applications like Bluetooth or Zigbee. The use of spiral inductors is kept to a minimum to avoid their excessive area. The design techniques demonstrated here can enable the continued integration of RF front-ends onto SoC devices in nano CMOS technologies without requiring dedicated supply voltages or thick oxide devices.

Abstract:In this paper, a low power transceiver for wireless sensor networks (WSN) is proposed. The system is designed with fully functional blocks including a receiver, a fractional-N frequency synthesizer, and a class-E transmitter, and it is optimized with a good balance among output power, sensitivity, power consumption, and silicon area. A transmitter and receiver (TX-RX) shared input-output matching network is used so that only one off-chip inductor is needed in the system. The power and area efficiency-oriented, fully-integrated frequency synthesizer is able to provide programmable output frequencies in the 2.4 GHz range while occupying a small silicon area. Implemented in a standard 0.18 μm RF Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology, the whole transceiver occupies a chip area of 0.5 mm2 (1.2 mm2 including bonding pads for a QFN package). Measurement results suggest that the design is able to work at amplitude shift keying (ASK)/on-off-keying (OOK) and FSK modes with up to 500 kbps data rate. With an input sensitivity of −60 dBm and an output power of 3 dBm, the receiver, transmitter and frequency synthesizer consumes 2.3 mW, 4.8 mW, and 3.9 mW from a 1.8 V supply voltage, respectively.

Abstract:The wireless power transfer characteristics of system architectures with single transmitter and multiple receiver coils are investigated. The transferred power and energy efficiency are presented through derivations of equations based on equivalent circuit model, which is validated against simulation results using Matlab SIMULINK and Ansoft Maxwell. The mutual coupling between receivers significantly affects the system resonant frequency and transmission performance, the power distribution between multiple receiver coils are addressed.

Abstract:Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) is emerged as a research hotspot of key technologies in future wireless communication systems with the purpose of achieving environment sensing within a wireless communication framework. To achieve complete and accurate sensing of the large-scale complex environment, multiple views from different user equipments (UEs) and base stations (BSs) in a wireless network should be fully and cooperatively exploited. In this article, both centralized and distributed architectures of multi-view sensing for wireless communications are proposed. For each architecture, the key performance indicators are pointed out. To realize the multi-view sensing, various signal processing as well as machine learning methods are discussed with detailed classifications and comparisons. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed architectures and schemes.

Abstract:To alleviate the complex communication problems arising in the network-on-chip (NoC) architectures as the number of on-chip components increases, several novel interconnect infrastructures have been recently proposed to replace the traditional on-chip interconnection systems that are reaching their limits in terms of performance, power and area constraints. Wireless NoC (WiNoC) is among the most promising scalable interconnection architectures for future generation NoCs. In this study, the authors first provide a general description of the WiNoC architecture. Then, they discuss the research problems under five categories: topology, routing, flow control, antenna and reliability. Open research issues for the realisation of the WiNoC are also discussed.

Abstract:Simultaneous information and power transfer over the wireless channels potentially offers great convenience to mobile users. Yet practical receiver designs impose technical constraints on its hardware realization, as practical circuits for harvesting energy from radio signals are not yet able to decode the carried information directly. To make theoretical progress, we propose a general receiver operation, namely, dynamic power splitting (DPS), which splits the received signal with adjustable power ratio for energy harvesting and information decoding, separately. Three special cases of DPS, namely, time switching (TS), static power splitting (SPS) and on-off power splitting (OPS) are investigated. The TS and SPS schemes can be treated as special cases of OPS. Moreover, we propose two types of practical receiver architectures, namely, separated versus integrated information and energy receivers. The integrated receiver integrates the front-end components of the separated receiver, thus achieving a smaller form factor. The rate-energy tradeoff for the two architectures are characterized by a so-called rate-energy (R-E) region. The optimal transmission strategy is derived to achieve different rate-energy tradeoffs. With receiver circuit power consumption taken into account, it is shown that the OPS scheme is optimal for both receivers. For the ideal case when the receiver circuit does not consume power, the SPS scheme is optimal for both receivers. In addition, we study the performance for the two types of receivers under a realistic system setup that employs practical modulation. Our results provide useful insights to the optimal practical receiver design for simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT).

Abstract:In recent years, demands on electronic implantable medical devices (IMDs) are significantly increasing. It is quite challenging to design energy-efficient IMDs. IMDs requiring wireless connection have two types of communications, i.e., the sensor data transmission, and the command/control information exchange. The design considerations for wireless IMD transceiver is reviewed, and a dual-band/mode transceiver architecture with high energy efficiency is proposed for the IMDs. The integrated circuit implementation techniques have been investigated. This is an ultra-low power transceiver working in the 400MHz frequency band and the 2.4GHz band simultaneously with a shared antenna.
A New Architecture of UHF RFID Digital Receiver for SoC Implementation

Abstract:A new architecture of UHF (ultra high frequency) RFID (radio frequency identification) digital receiver for SoC (system-on-chip) implementation is presented in this paper. For the system requirements, the design uses a unique two-stage correlation algorithm to estimate the frequency of the received data which may have large frequency deviation and also to achieve fast data decoding. Considering the single chip integration, we optimize the implementation for both low hardware cost and quick response. The function of the design is verified through FPGA implementation on Altera StratixII EP2S60 with great performance and its chip design used the SMIC 0.18mum process along with other parts of the UHF RFID interrogator chip.

Abstract:Ultra wideband radio is an emerging wireless standard that uses sub-nanosecond pulses to transmit data, resulting in several GHz bandwidths. The problem of generating a synchronized template respect to the received signal grows in complexity as the signal bandwidth increases. In this paper, an innovative, low cost, non-coherent receiver architecture is proposed for autonomous detection of ultra wideband signals. The new receiver will self-generate a synchronous template and hence, no transmitter-reference synchronizer is required. We validate its performance via simulations compared with coherent receivers and conventional non-coherent receivers, the new architecture is found much more robust to timing noise and hence greatly facilitates the synchronise problem in UWB receiver.

Receiver Selection and Transmit Beamforming for Multi-static Integrated Sensing and Communications

Abstract:Next-generation wireless networks are expected to develop a novel paradigm of integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) to enable both the high-accuracy sensing and high-speed communications. However, conventional mono-static ISAC systems, which simultaneously transmit and receive at the same equipment, may suffer from severe self-interference, and thus significantly degrade the system <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://performance.To" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> address this issue, this paper studies a multi-static ISAC system for cooperative target localization and communications, where the transmitter transmits ISAC signal to multiple receivers (REs) deployed at different positions. We derive the closed-form Cramér-Rao bound (CRB) on the joint estimations of both the transmission delay and Doppler shift for cooperative target localization, and the CRB minimization problem is formulated by considering the cooperative cost and communication rate requirements for the REs. To solve this problem, we first decouple it into two subproblems for RE selection and transmit beamforming, respectively. Then, a minimax linkage-based method is proposed to solve the RE selection subproblem, and a successive convex approximation algorithm is adopted to deal with the transmit beamforming subproblem with non-convex constraints. Finally, numerical results validate our analysis and reveal that our proposed multi-static ISAC scheme achieves better ISAC performance than the conventional mono-static ones when the number of cooperative REs is large.

Abstract:With the rapid growth of wireless data traffic and antennas configuration, higher spectrum efficiency and lower power consumption processing have evoked remarkable attention from the research and industry community for the deployment of future wireless communication. It has become a heated topic quickly in recent years and gives rise to the widespread interest around the world. As a core technology of the fifth-generation (5G) mobile communication, massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) technology can fully exploit the space resources and greatly improve the spectral and energy efficiency. However, massive MIMO systems are faced with the problems of mass data processing, high hardware cost, and huge total power consumption. To cope with these problems, a useful solution is that the receiver equips with finite resolution analog-to-digital (ADC) converters. A large number of research results show that the low-resolution quantization technology brings significant performance within the allowable loss of capacity. This promising technique has attracted many scholars to do tremendous endeavor on it. As a motivation, we make a comprehensive survey about low-resolution ADCs for wireless communication. This paper summarizes the latest developments in the design of low-resolution communication systems, focusing on system performance analysis, some key technologies of the receiver, and typical application scenarios for the low-resolution ADCs. In view of the adverse effects caused by coarse quantization, some potential implementations are presented to alleviate this dilemma. Future research directions are also given and suggested in this paper. This overview contributes significantly to providing an informative and tutorial reference for the key technologies of low-resolution ADCs as well as its applications in practical systems.

Abstract:This article presents a dual-band receiver front-end based on a reconfigurable Hartley architecture with double frequency conversion for millimeter-wave wireless communication. By controlling working states of band-select switches, the receiver is able to reach different RF bands without increasing or altering local-oscillator (LO) and intermediate-frequency bands. To reduce power consumption and save chip area, RF quadrature mixers are co-designed with the last stage of a dual-band low-noise amplifier and reuse its dc current. In addition, a self-mixing frequency tripler with a transformer-based compact hybrid is developed to multiply an input LO and provide quadrature LO signals for the RF mixers. The prototype receiver is demonstrated in a 65 nm CMOS process. Measurement results show that the receiver successfully covers two frequency bands of 24.6~28 GHz and 55.6~60 GHz, and the corresponding peak conversion gains are up to 24.5 dB and 26.3 dB, respectively. In these two bands, the minimum single-sideband noise figures are 7.5 and 7.8 dB. The tested image-rejection ratio of the dual-band receiver is better than 30 dB in both 26.5~30.0 GHz and 57.5~60.5 GHz bands. Besides, the receiver also demonstrates its capability of supporting up to 256QAM modulation and 3.2-Gb/s data-rate transmission.
