Abstract:The formation of ring-banded spherulites in double-layer semicrystalline polymer films has seldom been a concern. In this study, the nucleation and growth of ring-banded spherulites in poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(L-lactide) (PEO/PLA) double-layer films during isothermal crystallization at various temperatures above the melting point of the PEO layer have been investigated by using polarized optical microscopy (POM). The sequential crystallization of PLA and PEO components in the double-layer films was confirmed by a double quench crystallization procedure. The surface morphologies of ring-banded spherulites were examined by using scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results are compared with those for PLA/PEO blend films with 25 wt% PEO composition. It is interesting to find that the changing trend of band space in ring-banded spherulites at different isothermal crystallization temperatures in PEO/PLA double-layer films is more complex than that in PLA/PEO blend films. For the former ones, the ring-banded spherulites form at the lowest temperature approaching 65 degrees C and the band space slightly increases from 65 to 90 degrees C, is absent from 90 to 105 degrees C, obviously decreases from 105 to 115 degrees C, and significantly increases from 115 to 135 degrees C. For the latter ones, the band space only shows a monotonic increase with increasing temperature at above 105 degrees C. The mechanism for the formation of ring-banded spherulites in the PEO/PLA double-layer film system is proposed. The experimental results may shed some light on explaining the formation mechanism of ring-banded spherulites in semicrystalline polymers.

Abstract:Crystallization of a polystyrene-b-poly(ethylene oxide)-b-polystyrene (S–EO–S) triblock copolymer, S40EO136S40, with lamellar morphology in the melt and low glass transition temperature (Tg=47 °C) of the S block was studied. The triblock copolymer was cooled from ordered melt and isothermal crystallization was conducted at crystallization temperatures (Tc) near the Tg of the S block. It is found that crystallization behavior of S40EO136S40 strongly depends on Tc. When Tc is far below Tg, an Avrami exponent n=0.5 is observed, which is attributed to diffusion-controlled confined crystallization. As Tc slightly increases, the Avrami exponent is 1.0, indicating that crystallization is confined and crystallization rate is determined by the rate of homogeneous nucleation. When Tc is just below the Tg of the S block, crystallization tends to become breakout and accordingly Avrami exponent changes from 1.0 to 3.2. Crystallinity and melting temperature of the EO block in breakout crystallization are slightly higher than those in confined crystallization. Time-resolved small and wide angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) were used to monitor isothermal crystallization of S40EO136S40. It shows that the long period is constant in confined crystallization, but it gradually increases during breakout crystallization. WAXS result reveals that confined or breakout crystallization has no effect on the crystal structure of the EO block.
Effect of the Amorphous Segment on the Nonisothermal Crystallization and Morphology of Oxyethylene–oxybutylene Block Copolymers

Abstract:The nonisothermal crystallization and morphology of three oxyethylene-oxybutylene block copolymers with different architectures (E50B70, B65E75B65, and E35B114E35) were compared with those of three blends (E56B27/B-144, B37E77B37/B-14, and E38B38E38/B-14) With the same composition and morphology (E and B represent oxyethylene and oxybutylene units, respectively, and the subscripts denote the degree of polymerization), and the effect of the amorphous block was examined. The neat block copolymers had larger d-spacings and higher melting temperatures than the corresponding blends. In nonisothermal crystallization, the neat block copolymers had lower crystallization temperatures at high cooling rates. The difference in the crystallization temperatures became smaller at low cooling rates, and some of the neat block copolymers could have higher crystallization temperatures. Polarized optical microscopy showed that the neat block copolymers had smaller dimensions of crystal growth and smaller size of spherulites than the blends. The lower crystallization temperatures and less perfect morphology were attributed to the slower rate of conformational rearrangement of the amorphous block, which was required by the chain folding of the crystallizable block. This effect was more evident in the E35B114E35 tribtock copolymer, in which both ends of the amorphous B block were immobilized at the interface. (C) 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The superstructures of oxyethylene/oxybutylene block copolymers with different compositions and architectures (EmBn, BnEmBn and EmBnEm) were studied using polarized optical microscopy (POM). Several novel superstructures, such as fibril crystals and different frontiers of spherulites and crystallized regions, have been observed. It is found that the ability of forming spherulites is reduced with the decrease in the volume fraction of the crystallizable block. The unfavorable interaction between the blocks, which can be indicated by order-disorder transition temperature (TODT), also affects the formation of superstructure. The BnEmBn triblock copolymers exhibit the strongest ability of organization into spherulites, whereas the EmBnEm triblock copolymers show the weakest ability of organization into spherulites.
The Effect of Architecture on the Morphology and Crystallization of Oxyethylene/oxybutylene Block Copolymers from Micelles in N-Hexane

Abstract:The effects of polymer architecture on the morphology and crystallization of oxyethylene/oxybutylene diblock copolymers, E76B38, E114B56 and E155B76, in a concentration series of n-hexane solution were investigated with simultaneous synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS). It is observed that all the block copolymers form spherical micelles at higher temperature and the core of the micelles is partially ordered in some cases. On cooling to room temperature, the core becomes more anisotropic and there is an increase in crystallinity. After crystallization the three block copolymers behave quite differently. E76B38 precipitates as plates from the solution very easily, E114B56 only forms plate-like precipitates at high concentration whereas E155B76 remains a micellar solution. Analysis of the SAXS data shows that the B block is highly stretched in the shorter block copolymer. This is interpreted in terms of the aggregation of E76B38 being driven by the need to reduce the total area of the lateral interface because of the unfavorable interaction between the core and the solvent. By contrast, in longer block copolymers the B block is densely packed and an "over-spilling" effect can prevent aggregation by prevention of the interaction between the lateral crystal surfaces and the solvent. The dimensions of precipitated crystals in the presence of solvent are determined and found to be in good agreement with those calculated from self-consistent field theory.

Abstract:Enhanced phase separation and inverse order-to-order phase transition with increasing temperature was observed for a series of poly (acrylic acid)-b-poly (propylene oxide)-b-poly (acrylic acid) triblock copolymers with various block lengths by temperature-variable synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). This abnormal phase behavior was attributed to the change of hydrogen (H)-bonding interaction in block copolymers upon increasing temperature and theoretically explained from thermodynamic viewpoint. The temperature-dependent FTIR analysis revealed that increasing temperature led to the weakening of overall H-bonding interactions and the increase of free CO and C–O–C groups. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameter χ of PAA and PPO blocks was positive and increased with increasing temperature as determined from the SAXS profiles of disordered block copolymer. The thermodynamic calculation indicated that the increase of ΔH was larger than the decrease of –TΔS with increasing temperature because of the relatively large value of χ, leading to the increase of overall ΔGmix and hence the enhanced phase separation at higher temperature.

Abstract:The crystallization behavior of poly(oxyethylene)-b-poly(oxybutylene) block copolymers with different compositions, morphologies and architectures (EmBn diblock copolymers and EmBnEm, BnEmBn triblock copolymers) were investigated and the effect of volume fraction and architecture on the crystallization temperature (Tc) in non-isothermal crystallization was determined. It is found that the EmBn diblock copolymers having long E blocks exhibit similar crystallization temperatures, irrespective of volume fraction and morphology, but for the block copolymers with shorter E blocks the crystallization temperature increases with both the volume fraction, φE, and the length, m, of the E block. Some block copolymers with extremely low Tc, which fall into the temperature range normally associated with homogenous nucleation, were chosen for time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and isothermal crystallization kinetics experiments. The results show that breakout crystallization occurs in all these block copolymers. Therefore, unlike EmBn/Bh blends, there is no obvious relationship between Tc and crystallization behavior in neat block copolymers and homogeneous nucleation does not definitely lead to confined crystallization. The values of χc/χODT for all the block copolymers with hex and bcc morphology were also calculated. It is found that all the block copolymers have χc/χODT<3, in agreement with the previously reported critical value and consistent with their breakout crystallization behavior.
Observation of banded spherulites in pure poly(l-lactide) and its miscible blends with amorphous polymers

Abstract:Banded spherulites of pure poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) were observed via the ‘crystallization after annealing’ procedure, while only common spherulites were obtained via the ‘direct isothermal crystallization’ procedure. Wide angle X-ray diffraction revealed that the two types of spherulites had the same crystal lattice of α-modification. Atomic force microscopy demonstrated that the alternative negative and positive birefringent bands resulted from the alternative edge-on and flat-on lamellar orientations in the spherulites. Furthermore, the effect of thermal history on the spherulitic morphology was investigated in details. The PLLA samples melted for longer time or those with lower melting point were more likely to form banded spherulites. The possibility that the change of molecular weight was a determining factor of banding was excluded by the results on differently prepared samples with the same molecular weight. Therefore, we conclude that it was complete melting of the crystalline residues that favored formation of PLLA banded spherulites. Blending of PLLA with atactic poly(d,l-lactide) or poly[(R,S)-3-hydroxybutyrate], led to reduced band spacing. Effect of blending on the chain mobility, spherulite growth kinetics, supercooling and lamellar surface energy was quantitatively studied, which suggests that the blending-reduced band spacing cannot be attributed to the above factors. Therefore, there are other blending-relevant factors leading to the reduced band spacing.

Abstract:The chain microstructure, crystallization, and morphology of three olefinic blocky copolymers (OBCs) are compared. The weight percentage of the hard block and the octene content in it are calculated from the 13C NMR spectra with a two-site first-order Markovian model. The lengths of the hard blocks are compared from the melting and crystallization behaviors. The remarkable difference between the crystallinity measured by DSC, and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) indicates the presence of partially ordered phases. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) shows that the partially ordered phases in OBC-A are mainly located at the interface between the crystalline and amorphous phases, but exist as separated microdomains in OBC-B. As the hard block becomes shorter, there are also more, separated partially ordered phases in OBC-C. Spherulites are observed in all OBCs by POM and the size of the spherulites decreases in the order: OBC-A > OBC-B > OBC-C. TEM shows that spherulites are poorly developed in a thin film of OBC-B.
Observation of Double Gyroid and Hexagonally Perforated Lamellar Phases in ABCBA Pentablock Terpolymers

Abstract:Three symmetric linear pentablock terpolymers, poly(tert-butyl acrylate-b-styrene-b-ethylene oxide-b-styrene-b-tert-butyl acrylate) (TzSyOxSyTz)) with similar lengths of PS (S) and PtBA (T) blocks on the two sides but various lengths of the PEO (O) block in the middle, namely, T95S62O46S62T95, T105S60O90S60T105, and T107S65O136S65T107, were synthesized from their corresponding parent triblock copolymers poly(styrene-b-ethylene oxide-b-styrene) (SyOxSy), that is, S62O46S62, S60O90S60, and S65O136S65. The phase behaviors of TzSyOxSyTz pentablock terpolymers were studied using synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy. The PEO block length was found to significantly affect the phase structures of the obtained TzSyOxSyTz pentablock terpolymers. Although all three SyOxSy parent triblock copolymers were in disordered states, very interestingly, ordered structures were formed in all three TzSyOxSyTz pentablock terpolymers. Particularly, the double gyroid (Q(230)) network structure was experimentally observed for the first time in a symmetric linear ABCBA-type pentablock terpolymer, that is, T105S60O90S60T105. Moreover, the hexagonal perforated lamellae (HPL) structure was also observed in unsheared T107S65O136S65T107. Temperature-variable SAXS showed that T95S62O46S62T95 maintained an ordered lamellar phase structure in the temperature range of 25-210 degrees C, and an order-to-disorder transition occurred for T95S62O46S62T95 at around 170 degrees C. The HPL phase of T107S65O136S65T107 still partially remained with decreased ordering at a temperature of up to 210 degrees C.

Abstract:Poly(oxyethylene-b-oxybutylene) block copolymers of various chain lengths (EmBn) were blended with poly(oxybutylene) homopolymer (B-h), materials having different segregation strengths and morphologies (lamellae, cylinder, and sphere) were obtained. The isothermal crystallization kinetics and melting behavior of the blends were studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), respectively. Two types of crystallization are identified: confined crystallization occurring at lower temperature with Avrami exponent close to 1.0, having a strong dependence of crystallization halftime on crystallization temperature and a smooth change of q* in crystallization; breakout crystallization occurring at higher temperature with an Avrami exponent much bigger than 1.0 and a step change in q*. The relative segregation strength chi(c)/chi(ODT) has an important influence on the crystallization mechanism, and confined crystallization is observed at chi(c)/chi(ODT) > 3 whereas breakout crystallization occurs with chi(c)/chi(ODT) < 3. For the blends with chi(c)/chi(ODT) around 3 the mode of crystallization is dependent on the crystallization temperature (confined at lower temperature but breakout at higher temperature). In confined crystallization the interfacial energy a. can be determined from crystallization rate. It is found that the values of sigma(e) for the EmBn, block copolymers are slightly larger than that of PEO homopolymer. Confined crystallization can be further divided into three types based on melting behavior: partially confined crystallization for the blends with intermediate relative segregation strength having a cylinder structure in the melt, in which only part of the morphology in the melt is retained after crystallization and the other part is transformed into lamellae; "weakly",. confined crystallization with no step change of q* upon nonisothermal crystallization but remarkable change of q* during heating for the blends with strong relative segregation strength and a cylinder structure in the melt; and "strongly" confined crystallization showing little change of q* with temperature upon both crystallization and melting for the blends with sphere structure and strong relative segregation strength. In the range of molecular weight studied, only breakout crystallization was observed in lamellar melt morphologies.

Abstract:The decades-long paradigm of continuous and perpetual lamellar twisting constituting banded spherulites has been found to be inconsistent with several recent studies showing discontinuity regions between consecutive bands, for which, however, no explanation has been found. The present research demonstrates, in three different semicrystalline polymers (HDPE, PEG10000 and Pluronic F-127), that sequential transcrystallinity is the predominant mechanism of banded spherulite formation, heterogeneously nucleated on intermittent self-shear-oriented amorphous layers excluded during the crystals' growth. It is hereby demonstrated that a transcrystalline layer can be nucleated on amorphous self-shear-oriented polymer chains in the melt, by a local melt flow in the bulk or in contact with any interface—even in contact with the interface with air, e.g., in contact with an entrapped air bubble or at the edges of the sample—or nucleated following the multiple directions and orientations induced by a turbulent flow. The bilateral excessive local exclusion of amorphous non-crystallizable material, following a short period of initial non-banded growth, is found to be the source of dislocations leading to spirally banded spherulites, through the transcrystalline layers' nucleation thereon. The present research reveals and demonstrates the sequential transcrystalline morphology of banded spherulites and the mechanism of its formation, which may lead to new insights in the understanding and design of polymer processing for specific applications.

Unexpected Crystalline Memory Effect in Poly(l-Lactide)-based Block Copolymers

Abstract:The crystalline memory effect is frequently observed in polymer crystallization, but the melt structure remains unresolved. In this work, the preserved spherulites in the melt of poly(L-lactide)-based block copolymers are observed by polarized optical microscopy (POM) unexpectedly. These spherulites are not erased instantly on reaching the melting temperatures, but it takes tens of minutes at a designed melting temperature to completely erase the spherulites. These preserved spherulites in the melt, where some crystalline traces are lost but the Maltese cross appearance is still obvious, are possibly attributed to the long range of molecular orientation enhanced by microphase separation between two blocks. Moreover, these preserved spherulites have a significant effect on the subsequent crystallization, i.e. a faster radius growth rate and denser nucleation. This study highlights that a thermodynamically unstable structure can be fully preserved in a supercooled melt for a long time, which has never been reported elsewhere.
Formation of ring-banded spherulites of α and β modifications in Poly(butylene adipate)

Abstract:The morphology and crystalline structure of banded spherulites of poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) were investigated by polarized optical microscopy (POM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). It was found that after purification and fractionation, the obtained PBA fractions with different molecular weight formed ring-banded spherulites at different temperature ranges. Pure α and β form of PBA can form regular ring-banded spherulites. AFM and SEM observations of the thin film revealed that the alternative ridges and valleys along the radial direction consisted of edge-on and flat-on lamellae, respectively, indicating the ring-bands in PBA spherulites are the consequence of lamellar twisting. In addition, sequential growth of α and β form in one PBA spherulite at the same temperature is reported and interpreted by competition of primary nucleation and radial growth of the two crystalline modifications. At a certain temperature range, the α form PBA has larger primary nucleation rate but lower radial growth rate than the β form PBA, leading to formation of spherulites consisted of α form at center and β form at the outer region. But finally, a layer of α form ringless region appears at the outside of the β form ring-banded region before impingement of the neighboring spherulites. These results suggest that besides crystallization temperature, molecular weight has considerable effect on the formation of crystal modification of PBA and the corresponding banded spherulites.
Regulation of Crystallization Kinetics, Morphology, and Mechanical Properties of Olefinic Blocky Copolymers

Abstract:Two olefinic blocky copolymers (OBCs) were quenched from different mixing states in the melt, and crystallization kinetics and morphology at various crystallization temperatures (T(c)s) and corresponding mechanical properties were studied. It is observed that, at lower T(c)s, premesophase separation in the melt accelerates crystallization of OBC-A with a weak segregation strength and a larger fraction of the crystalline hard blocks due to enrichment of the hard blocks in the hard-block-rich domains. By contrast, premesophase separation retards crystallization of OBC-B with a stronger segregation strength and lower fraction of the hard blocks because of the prevailing confinement effect at lower T(c)s. Moreover, since the hard blocks dissolved in the soft-block-rich domains can crystallize at lower T(c)s, which can bridge the crystals formed in different hard-block-rich domains, the crystal growth is not restricted. At higher T(c)s, OBC-A crystallizes more slowly from the premesophase-separated melt than that from the homogeneous melt, which is attributed to the weaker crystallizability of the hard blocks dissolved in the soft-block-rich domains and thus the restricted crystal growth. Nevertheless, mesophase separation always takes place prior to crystallization at higher T(c)s for OBC-B because of the faster rate of mesophase separation. Therefore, the mixing state in the melt has little effect on crystallization and morphology of OBC-B at higher T(c)s. It is found that the mechanical properties of OBCs can be regulated in a wide range by alteration of crystallization conditions. Better mechanical properties can be achieved when OBCs crystallize from the homogeneous melt and at a lower T-c.

Abstract:Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and light scattering (LS) experiments were conducted to study the micellar morphologies and the transformation process of Polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide). The origin of morphological changes with temperature was also illustrated by the free energy calculation of micelles as a first approximation. 1,4-dioxane was chosen as the common solvent, and cyclohexane was selected as the selective solvent. At room temperature, spherical micelles are formed, and mixture of spherical micelles and cylindrical micelles are observed when the temperature decreased to 5°C. The PEO blocks are found to be slightly compressed in the core of the spherical micelle. Although the interfacial free energy is demonstrated to be the main driving force for the morphology transitions induced by decreasing temperature in this system, it is found that the reversible transformations when increasing to room temperature is not able to be observed in our experimental time range.

Abstract:The growth of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) spherulites was observed synchronously with a polarized optical microscope, which was equipped with a video detector, and so the whole growing process of the PEO spherulites was dynamically recorded as a movie. There was a series of concentric diffractive bands on the surface of the PEO spherulites; furthermore, the diffractive banding did not exist until at least two independent PEO spherulites came into contact with each other. However, the formation of the diffractive banding on the PEO spherulites was also related to the crystallization conditions. It was concluded qualitatively that the diffractive banding formed more easily at the crystallization temperature with a high degree of supercooling, and this was explained in kinetic terms. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:pherulitic morphologies of a series of linear poly(L-lactide)s(PLLA),which was synthesized by ring opening polymerization(ROP) using initiators with different structures,i.e.the incoming end groups,were observed through direct melt-crystallization process by polarized optical microscopy(POM).It has been verified that the flexibility of the end group has a significant influence on the banded structure of PLLA spherulites.It was found that the spherulitic band spacing periodicity of PLLA initiated by rigid benzyl alcohol(B-PLLA) was much smaller than that of PLLA initiated by flexible lauryl amine(L-PLLA) with similar molecular weight at certain crystallization temperature.However,this end group effect was decreasing with increasing molecular weight.For B-PLLAs,the band spacing periodicity of spherulites increased with molecular weight increasing noticeably,for example,B-PLLA1 having a molecular weight of about 1700 yielded spherulites with band spacing periodicity being only several micrometers and spherulites of B-PLLA4 having a molecular weight of about 7000 had the band spacing periodicity more than 150 micrometers.Meanwhile,the temperature windows for the formation of regular banded spherulites of B-PLLAs shifted to higher region and became narrower with increasing molecular weight.Finally,a model was suggested to illustrate the effects of end group and molecular weight on the formation of twisting PLLA lamellae.
