Abstract:Industrial processing of polymeric products often involves stretching from glassy state. Therefore, the understanding of structural evolution of glassy polymers during stretching around glass transition temperatures (T-g) is of fundamental significance to predict suitable processing parameters for industrial purpose. However, former reviews have mostly focused on the structural evolution of polymers being stretched from melt or crystalline state, whereas there still lacks summaries dedicated to stretching studies from the amorphous state. This work summarizes important advances of researches on both non-crystallizable and crystallizable polymers concerning their stretching behavior near T-g. Based on case studies on typical examples of each kind, the review systematically presented the structural changes including chain orientation/relaxation kinetics, dynamic network evolution, and stretch-induced phase transition. A discussion about the influence of these structural evolutions on essential end-use properties of materials is also included, in the hope of providing guidance on future stretching-related studies.

Abstract:In this review,state-of-the-art technology of polyolefin-based elastomer manufacture, including major producers and product trademarks,grades and properties were summarized. Research and developments on production process and catalyst system for the ethylene-propylene binary and ternary rubbers(EPM,EPDM,mEPDM),the poly(ethylene-co-α-olefin) elastomer(POE)and the poly(ethylene-block-α-olefin) elastomer(OBC)were also introduced. It has been pointed out that the thermoplastic elastomer,such as POE and OBC,and the polyolefin plastomer not only had excellent mechanical and physical properties of polyolefin-based elastomer,but also was easy molding and processing,and can be recycled and reused. And the metallocene catalyst had the advantages of high activity,good ability to catalyze copolymerization withα-olefin,and single active site. In order to independently develop the polyolefin-based elastomer,the thermoplastic elastomer and plastomer with more excellent performance and more profitable,such as mEPDM,POE and OBC et al,the researches on the metallocene catalyst with high temperature adaptability and the high temperature solution polymerization process must be strengthened.

Abstract:The decades-long paradigm of continuous and perpetual lamellar twisting constituting banded spherulites has been found to be inconsistent with several recent studies showing discontinuity regions between consecutive bands, for which, however, no explanation has been found. The present research demonstrates, in three different semicrystalline polymers (HDPE, PEG10000 and Pluronic F-127), that sequential transcrystallinity is the predominant mechanism of banded spherulite formation, heterogeneously nucleated on intermittent self-shear-oriented amorphous layers excluded during the crystals' growth. It is hereby demonstrated that a transcrystalline layer can be nucleated on amorphous self-shear-oriented polymer chains in the melt, by a local melt flow in the bulk or in contact with any interface—even in contact with the interface with air, e.g., in contact with an entrapped air bubble or at the edges of the sample—or nucleated following the multiple directions and orientations induced by a turbulent flow. The bilateral excessive local exclusion of amorphous non-crystallizable material, following a short period of initial non-banded growth, is found to be the source of dislocations leading to spirally banded spherulites, through the transcrystalline layers' nucleation thereon. The present research reveals and demonstrates the sequential transcrystalline morphology of banded spherulites and the mechanism of its formation, which may lead to new insights in the understanding and design of polymer processing for specific applications.

Abstract:Poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) has been reported to have polymorphic crystal structures and only the mixture of two crystal modifications (a and crystals) forms banded spherulites. However, how the two crystals coexist in banded spherulites remains to be solved. In this work, the morphological structure of PBA banded spherulites was analyzed from their biodegradation behavior by means of polarized optical microscopy (POM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). It was found that the banded spherulites were made up of alternate flat-on and edge-on domains in lamellar crystals along the radiating direction. To determine the distribution of two crystal modifications in banded spherulites and the interrelationships between the alternate domains with polymorphic crystal structures, the relative contents of two crystal modifications in banded spherulites were first quantified, and their changes were then correlated to the morphological changes of banded spherulites in the course of biodegradation in terms of the difference in biodegradation kinetics of two crystal modifications. It was found that the flat-on domains show a slower crystal growth rate but a faster biodegradation rate than the edge-on domains. The analysis indicates that the flat-on domains in spherulites are composed of alpha crystals, while the edge-on domains are composed of crystals. The primary growth mechanism of PBA banded spherulite was proposed based on the difference in crystallization heat and kinetics of two crystal modifications. (C) 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Banded spherulites of pure poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) were observed via the ‘crystallization after annealing’ procedure, while only common spherulites were obtained via the ‘direct isothermal crystallization’ procedure. Wide angle X-ray diffraction revealed that the two types of spherulites had the same crystal lattice of α-modification. Atomic force microscopy demonstrated that the alternative negative and positive birefringent bands resulted from the alternative edge-on and flat-on lamellar orientations in the spherulites. Furthermore, the effect of thermal history on the spherulitic morphology was investigated in details. The PLLA samples melted for longer time or those with lower melting point were more likely to form banded spherulites. The possibility that the change of molecular weight was a determining factor of banding was excluded by the results on differently prepared samples with the same molecular weight. Therefore, we conclude that it was complete melting of the crystalline residues that favored formation of PLLA banded spherulites. Blending of PLLA with atactic poly(d,l-lactide) or poly[(R,S)-3-hydroxybutyrate], led to reduced band spacing. Effect of blending on the chain mobility, spherulite growth kinetics, supercooling and lamellar surface energy was quantitatively studied, which suggests that the blending-reduced band spacing cannot be attributed to the above factors. Therefore, there are other blending-relevant factors leading to the reduced band spacing.

Abstract:Engineering ceramics in the system Si-O-C-N-B manufactured from preceramic silicon containing polymers gain in significance with increasing availability of advanced precursor materials such as poly(carbosilane), -(silazane), -(siloxane) or -(borosilazane). While high temperature resistant Si-C and Si-N ceramic fibers are already used to reinforce ceramic matrix composites (CMC) in air- and spacecraft structures, novel products such as coatings, tapes, foams, and complex shaped components for medium and low temperature applications in the fields of energy, environmental, transportation, and communication technologies become more important in the future. The synthesis of preceramic polymer, properties of polymer derived ceramic, methods of manufacturing and effects on polymer pyrolysis were reviewed.

Abstract:The formation of ring-banded spherulites in double-layer semicrystalline polymer films has seldom been a concern. In this study, the nucleation and growth of ring-banded spherulites in poly(ethylene oxide)/poly(L-lactide) (PEO/PLA) double-layer films during isothermal crystallization at various temperatures above the melting point of the PEO layer have been investigated by using polarized optical microscopy (POM). The sequential crystallization of PLA and PEO components in the double-layer films was confirmed by a double quench crystallization procedure. The surface morphologies of ring-banded spherulites were examined by using scanning electron microscopy. The experimental results are compared with those for PLA/PEO blend films with 25 wt% PEO composition. It is interesting to find that the changing trend of band space in ring-banded spherulites at different isothermal crystallization temperatures in PEO/PLA double-layer films is more complex than that in PLA/PEO blend films. For the former ones, the ring-banded spherulites form at the lowest temperature approaching 65 degrees C and the band space slightly increases from 65 to 90 degrees C, is absent from 90 to 105 degrees C, obviously decreases from 105 to 115 degrees C, and significantly increases from 115 to 135 degrees C. For the latter ones, the band space only shows a monotonic increase with increasing temperature at above 105 degrees C. The mechanism for the formation of ring-banded spherulites in the PEO/PLA double-layer film system is proposed. The experimental results may shed some light on explaining the formation mechanism of ring-banded spherulites in semicrystalline polymers.

Abstract:Due to their unique supersoft, superelastic, quick strain hardening, and other fascinating viscoelastic features, cylindrical side-chain polymer systems, such as bottlebrush polymers, have gained significant interest recently. In this mini-review, we intend to summarize the relevant research progresses. Several typical side-chain polymers that demonstrate the structure of the single-chain supramolecular columns, including bottlebrushes, dendronized polymers and mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymers, are introduced along with their linear viscoelasticity. Furthermore, the features of multi-chain supramolecular columns are illustrated by using the self-assembly of wedge-shaped side-chain polymers as the example. After a brief overview of the functional applications of cylindrical side-chain polymer systems, we give some comments on the obstacles and challenges in this research field. Even though the physical mechanisms underlying the complex relaxation behavior of cylindrical side-chain polymers caused by entanglement and microphase separation are still not fully understood, research on these polymers will offer fresh perspectives and a theoretical foundation for creating brand-new viscoelastic materials. Abstract:New growth features of PHBHHx banded spherulite were observed during two-stage crystallization. The spherulites consisted of two layers, with new layer sometimes originating from the edge region and growing forward and backward. Though the new layer crystallized at room temperature, it still showed the same band spacing as that crystallized at 90°C due to the template effect of the old layer.

Abstract:Hyperbranched polymers are a type of highly branched polymers with a multitude of end groups. Because of their highly branched three-dimensional and sphere-like molecular architecture, hyperbranched polymers have shown very different properties from those of their linear analogues, such as low viscosity, high solubility and a large number of terminal functional groups that can be modified. Hence, a great deal of attention has been focused on hyperbranched polymers due to their unique structure, broad application fields, relatively easy synthetic methods and low cost. This paper reviews the development and the most recent advance of hyperbranched polymers in structure (including traditional structure and novel π conjugated structure), synthetic methods, properties and applications, with an emphasis being laid on the intrinsic relationships between structure, properties and applications as novel functional materials, such as nano-materials, drug delivery agents, electroluminescent materials and sensory materials. Additionally, the perspectives and the problems should be solved in the future are provided.
Formation of ring-banded spherulites of α and β modifications in Poly(butylene adipate)

Abstract:The morphology and crystalline structure of banded spherulites of poly(butylene adipate) (PBA) were investigated by polarized optical microscopy (POM), wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), atomic force microscopy (AFM) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). It was found that after purification and fractionation, the obtained PBA fractions with different molecular weight formed ring-banded spherulites at different temperature ranges. Pure α and β form of PBA can form regular ring-banded spherulites. AFM and SEM observations of the thin film revealed that the alternative ridges and valleys along the radial direction consisted of edge-on and flat-on lamellae, respectively, indicating the ring-bands in PBA spherulites are the consequence of lamellar twisting. In addition, sequential growth of α and β form in one PBA spherulite at the same temperature is reported and interpreted by competition of primary nucleation and radial growth of the two crystalline modifications. At a certain temperature range, the α form PBA has larger primary nucleation rate but lower radial growth rate than the β form PBA, leading to formation of spherulites consisted of α form at center and β form at the outer region. But finally, a layer of α form ringless region appears at the outside of the β form ring-banded region before impingement of the neighboring spherulites. These results suggest that besides crystallization temperature, molecular weight has considerable effect on the formation of crystal modification of PBA and the corresponding banded spherulites.

Abstract:Banded spherulites in bulk crystallization of polyCethylene oxide) (PEO) are observed with polarizing optical microscopy. The interesting phenomenon is that the concentric bands can still be observed without polars and are assumed to results from the step-growing or spiral-growing of spherulites rather than from the lamellae twisting. The concentric cracks are also observed within every single spherulite together with the bands, which might be meaningful for research and application.

Abstract:Due to the effects of microphase separation and physical dimensions, confinement widely exists in the multi-component polymer systems (e.g., polymer blends, copolymers) and the polymers having nanoscale dimensions, such as thin films and nanofibers. Semicrystalline polymers usually show different crystallization kinetics, crystalline structure and morphology from the bulk when they are confined in the nanoscale environments; this may dramatically influence the physical performances of the resulting materials. Therefore, investigations on the crystalline and spherulitic morphology of semicrystalline polymers in confined systems are essential from both scientific and technological viewpoints; significant progresses have been achieved in this field in recent years. In this article, we will review the recent research progresses on the crystalline and spherulitic morphology of polymers crystallized in the nanoscale confined environments. According to the types of confined systems, crystalline, spherulitic morphology and morphological evolution of semicrystalline polymers in the ultrathin films, miscible polymer blends and block copolymers will be summarized and reviewed.

Abstract:The properties of semicrystalline polymeric materials depend remarkably on their structures, especially for those exhibiting a polymorphic behavior. This offers an efficient way to tailor their properties through crystal engineering. For control of the crystal structure, and therefore the physical and mechanical properties, a full understanding of the polymorph selection of polymers under varied conditions is essential. This has stimulated a mass of research work on the polymorphic crystallization and related phase transformation. Considering that the isotactic poly(1-butene) (iPBu) exhibits pronounced polymorphs and complicated transition between different phases, the study on its crystallization and phase transformation has attracted considerable attention during the past decades. This review provides the context of the recent progresses made on the crystallization and phase transition behavior of iPBu. We first review the crystal structures of known crystal forms and then their formation conditions and influencing factors. In addition, the inevitable form II to form I spontaneous transition mechanism and the transformation kinetics is reviewed based on the existing research works, aiming for it to be useful for its processing in different phases and the further technical development of new methods for accelerating or even bypass its form II to form I transformation.

Abstract:On polyhydroxybutyrate banded spherulites, concentric rings were observed between cross polarizers or without polarizers. The rings used to be considered as cracks. In this paper, we provide evidences to distinguish the concentric rings from cracks observed on PHB spherulites. Furthermore, atomic force microscopy confirmed that these concentric rings with varying spacing were growth terraces rather than cracks. The height of the terraces reached up to several hundred nanometers. It was observed that the external terraces were higher than the internal terraces, which was proposed to result from layer-by-layer growth. This is the first report on the new microscopic feature of polyhydroxybutyrate spherulites. Spherulites with birefringent bands, wavy fluctuation of height were also observed.
A new method for preparing nascent spherulites

Abstract:A new method is presented for preparing nascent spherulites, which can be used to investigate the formation of spherulites of polymers. Different morphologies of nascent spherulites were found, and they correspond to two orthogonal views of sheaf-like entities. Splaying of lamellae in two dimensions and branching were observed directly. The nucleation could not be found to be indicative of shish-kebab morphology.
