Abstract:Enhanced phase separation and inverse order-to-order phase transition with increasing temperature was observed for a series of poly (acrylic acid)-b-poly (propylene oxide)-b-poly (acrylic acid) triblock copolymers with various block lengths by temperature-variable synchrotron small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). This abnormal phase behavior was attributed to the change of hydrogen (H)-bonding interaction in block copolymers upon increasing temperature and theoretically explained from thermodynamic viewpoint. The temperature-dependent FTIR analysis revealed that increasing temperature led to the weakening of overall H-bonding interactions and the increase of free CO and C–O–C groups. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameter χ of PAA and PPO blocks was positive and increased with increasing temperature as determined from the SAXS profiles of disordered block copolymer. The thermodynamic calculation indicated that the increase of ΔH was larger than the decrease of –TΔS with increasing temperature because of the relatively large value of χ, leading to the increase of overall ΔGmix and hence the enhanced phase separation at higher temperature.

Abstract:A “direct mixing” synthesis strategy has been demonstrated for the first time that allows fast (e.g., 0.5 h) synthesis of bulk quantity of thermally stable and highly porous metal–organic coordination polymers (MOCP) nanocrystals (30–150 nm diameter) at room temperature with high yield (∼90%). The MOCP materials constructed from Zn(NO3)2·6H2O and 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid (H2BDC) were characterized with scanning electron microscope, powder X-ray diffraction, thermal gravimetric analysis, FT-IR, and volumetric Ar adsorption/desorption. The direct mixing method also produced a highly porous nanometer-sized MOCP material, which is likely to be a new phase that has not been discovered by the more commonly used “diffusion” approach. “Soft” and “hard” template approaches were used to successfully manipulate the morphology of MOCP materials at nanometer scale. In addition, water molecules were shown to play an important role in the synthesis and eventual composition of MOCP materials. Exposure of MOCP materials to water resulted in dramatic drop in surface area and porosity because of possible hydrolysis of the framework. An acid hydrolysis process of MOCP materials was also revealed in which the crystals could be hydrolyzed back into metal salts and organic acid under acid treatment.

Thermoreversible Order–Order Transition of a Diblock Copolymer Induced by the Unusual Coil–Rod Conformational Change of One Block

Abstract:Unusual liquid crystalline (LC) behavior and interesting nanophase separation behavior in the self-assemblies of a series of diblock copolymers (BCPs), poly( dim ethylsiloxane)-b-poly{2,S-bis [(4-butoxyphenyl)oxycarbonyl] styrene} (PDMS-b-PBPCS), were observed. The synthesized PDMS-b-PBPCS BCPs with PBPCS blocks of different molecular weights had volume fractions of PBPCS (f(PDPCS)'s) from 77% to 90%. At the molecular scale, the BCPs with f(PBPCS) values of 77% and 83% were in amorphous isotropic state in the entire temperature range studied, and thus, they were in coil-coil BCPs. For the BCPs with f(PBPCS) values of 87% and 90%, the PBPCS blocks displayed a thermodynamically stable isotropic phase at lower temperatures and an LC phase at higher temperatures. Therefore, they exhibited a transition from the coil coil to rod coil BCPs with increasing temperatures. At the nanophase structure scale, all of the BCPs were coil coil type and self-assembled into body-centered cubic (BCC) structures in the low temperature range. Moreover, some of the nanophase-separated structures of these BCPs could be thermoreversibly transformed by changing temperatures. For the BCPs with f(PBPCS) values between 77% and 83%, they remained BCC nanophase-separated structures during heating (up to 260 degrees C) as well as during subsequent cooling. For the BCPs with f(PBPCS) values of 87% and 90%, when the temperature was higher than the isotropic-to-LC transition temperatures of the PBPCS blocks, the new nanophase-separated hexagonally packed cylinder (HEX) structures started to form. However, only the nanophase-separated structure of the BCP with an f(PBPCS), value of 90% could completely transform to the HEX structure when the temperature reached 250 degrees C. As the temperature was reduced, the nanophase-separated structures of these two samples gradually reverted to the BCC structures below the LC-to-isotropic transition temperatures of the PBPCS blocks.

Abstract:The string method is introduced to the self-consistent mean-field theory for rodcoil diblock copolymers to investigate the phase transition kinetics. The equal arc length parametrization used in our improved string method is constrained on both the density and orientation order parameters to obtain accurate and stable minimum energy pathways (MEP). Focusing on different single networks formed by rods as the target structures, we developed an inverse design strategy of kinetic pathways. By designing distinct initial structures (lamellae or cylinders) with specific symmetry matching the target structure as the two ends of the string, we calculated the MEP and analyzed the effects of chain rigidity on the phase transition kinetics. The results indicate that the reordering transition between lamellae belonging to the same crystallographic plane group can induce the formation of metastable single networks. The shape and arrangement of the rigid rods will influence the epitaxial phase transition. The long-term stability of the target structures can be regulated by tailoring the block composition as well as the geometrical asymmetry between rigid and flexible segments, which may guide the experiments to fabricate long-lived single networks.
Programmable Morphology Evolution of Rod-Coil-Rod Block Copolymer Assemblies Induced by Variation of Chain Ordering

Abstract:Morphology transition of block copolymer assemblies in response to external stimuli has attracted considerable attention. However, our knowledge about the mechanism of such a transition is still limited, especially for rod-coil block copolymers. Here, we report a programmable morphology evolution of assemblies induced by variation of chain ordering for rod-coil-rod triblock copolymers. A sequence of morphology transition from ellipsoids to disks, bowls, and vesicles is observed by increasing the solution temperature. At high temperatures, the mobility of the rod chain increases and the rigidity of the rod chain decreases. This gives rise to an ellipsoid-to-vesicle morphology transition. Dissipative particle dynamics theoretical simulations were performed to reveal the mechanism of this morphology transition process. It was found that the increase of rod chain mobility and the decrease of rod chain rigidity induce a decrease of chain ordering of rod blocks as temperature increases, which results in an ellipsoid-to-vesicle morphology transition. Abstract:ABSTRACTA mesogen‐jacketed liquid crystalline polymer (MJLCP) containing triphenylene (Tp) moieties in the side chains with 12 methylene units as spacers (denoted as PP12V) was synthesized. Its liquid crystalline (LC) phase behavior was studied with a combination of solution 1H NMR, solid‐state NMR, gel permeation chromatography, thermogravimetric analysis, polarized light microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and one‐ and two‐dimensional wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction. By simply varying the temperature, two ordered nanostructures at sub‐10‐nm length scales originating from two LC building blocks were obtained in one polymer. The low‐temperature phase of the polymer is a hexagonal columnar phase (ΦH, a = 2.06 nm) self‐organized by Tp discotic mesogens. The high‐temperature phase is a nematic columnar phase with a larger dimension (a′ = 4.07 nm) developed by the rod‐like supramolecular mesogen—the MJLCP chain as a whole. A re‐entrant isotropic phase is found in the medium temperature range. Partially homeotropic alignment of the polymer can be achieved when treated with an electric field, with the polymer in the ΦH phase developed by the Tp moieties. The incorporation of Tp moieties through relatively long spacers (12 methylene units) disrupts the ordered packing of the MJLCP at low temperatures, which is the first case for main‐chain/side‐chain combined LC polymers with MJLCPs as the main‐chain LC building block to the best of our knowledge. The relationship of the molecular structure and the novel phase behavior of PP12V has implications in the design of LC polymers containing nanobuilding blocks toward constructing ordered nanostructures at different length scales. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Ordered Solid‐State Microstructures of Conjugated Polymers Arising from Solution‐State Aggregation

Abstract:Controlling the solution-state aggregation of conjugated polymers for producing specific microstructures remains challenging. Herein, a practical approach is developed to finely tune the solid-state microstructures through temperature-controlled solution-state aggregation and polymer crystallization. High temperature generates significant conformation fluctuation of conjugated backbones in solution, which facilitates the polymer crystallization from solvated aggregates to orderly packed structures. The polymer films deposited at high temperatures exhibit less structural disorders and higher electron mobilities (up to two orders of magnitude) in field-effect transistors, compared to those deposited at low temperatures. This work provides an effective strategy to tune the solution-state aggregation to reveal the relationship between solution-state aggregation and solid-state microstructures of conjugated polymers.

Abstract:Abstract Solution-state self-assemblies of block copolymers to form nanostructures are tremendously attractive for their tailorable morphologies and functionalities. While incorporating moieties with strong ordering effects may introduce highly orientational control over the molecular packing and dictate assembly behaviors, subtle and delicate driving forces can yield slower kinetics to reveal manifold metastable morphologies. Herein, we report the unusually convoluted self-assembly behaviors of a liquid crystalline block copolymer bearing triphenylene discotic mesogens. They undergo unusual multiple morphological transitions spontaneously, driven by their intrinsic subtle liquid crystalline ordering effect. Meanwhile, liquid crystalline orderedness can also be built very quickly by doping the mesogens with small-molecule dopants, and the morphological transitions are dramatically accelerated and various exotic micelles are produced. Surprisingly, with high doping levels, the self-assembly mechanism of this block copolymer is completely changed from intramolecular chain shuffling and rearrangement to nucleation-growth mode, based on which self-seeding experiments can be conducted to produce highly uniform fibrils.

Abstract:Thermal stability on a mixture of triblock polymer (P123) and fluorocarbon surfactant (FC-4) in acidic media for synthesis of ordered mesoporous materials has been carefully investigated by NMR spectroscopy at various treated temperatures (RT-180 degrees C) and the templating mechanism of the mixture on high-temperature synthesis has been proposed. Accordingly, we have designed fluorocarbon-free templates for syntheses of ordered mesoporous silica materials at high temperatures. As expected, ordered mesoporous silica materials with high degree of silica condensation are synthesized at high temperatures from these designed templates.

Abstract:The Keggin polyoxometalates (POM) H3PW12O40 (PW) electrostatically complexed with poly(styrene-block-2-vinyl pyridine) (PS-b-P2VP) in DMF, and ordered microphase separation occurred through solvent evaporation. The phase behaviors of PS-b-P2VP/PW in bulk were systematically investigated by using SAXS and TEM to discover the effect of POM content and molecular weight of the block copolymers. Computational simulation was also performed to reveal the same phase transition sequence as the experimental results. As the POM content increases, the PS-b-P2VP/PW complex with a low molecular weight changed from lamellar phase (LAM) to hexagonal cylindrical phase (HEX), and finally transited into spherical phase (SPH). Unexpectedly, PS-b-P2VP/PW complexes with a high molecular weight were inclined to form a kinetic-trapped intermediate phase (inverted HEX). The mechanism of formation of inverted phases was proposed based on simulation that asymmetric swelling in the concentrated DMF solution would result in the ultimate kinetic-trapped nanostructure in the bulk.

Abstract:A series of narrowly distributed rod-coil diblock copolymers, polystyrene-block-(2,5-bis-[4-methoxyphenyl]oxycarbonyl)styrene) (PS-PMPCS), were synthesized by 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-l-pip-eridinyloxy (TEMPO)-mediated living free radical polymerization. Differential scanning calorimetry, wide-angle X-ray diffraction, small-angle X-ray scattering, polorized light microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy were used to study the phase structure of this series of rod-coil polymers. It was found that the block copolymers microphase separate into ordered structures at temperatures below ca. 240 degreesC. PMPCS blocks form supramolecular columnar nematic phase (phiN) within the microphase-separated block copolymers. LC columnar axes were identified to be parallel to the block copolymer lamellar normal. Two layers of LC columns are confined in each LC domain, and the hierarchical structure resembles the "bilayer smectic A" phase observed in small molecular liquid crystals and rod-coil oligomers.
Ordered Bicontinuous Network Structures Regulated by Orientational Interactions in a Rod-Coil Block Copolymer

Abstract:The rich phase behavior of block copolymers (BCPs) has drawn great attention in recent years. However, the double diamond (DD) phase is rarely obtained because of the competition between the minimization of interfacial energy and packing frustration. Here, a rod-coil BCP containing mesogen-jacketed liquid crystalline polymer is designed to acquire ordered bicontinuous network nanostructures. The reduction of internal energy originating from the orientational interaction among the rod blocks can compensate for the free energy penalty of packing frustration to stabilize the DD structure. The resulting BCP can also experience lamellae-to-DD and double gyroid-to-lamellae transitions by changing the annealing temperature. These results make the rod-coil BCP an excellent candidate for the self-assembly of ordered network structures, demonstrating great potential in nanopatterning and metamaterials.

Abstract:Powders having stoichiometric composition of Co2Z (Ba3Co2Fe24O41) were prepared by gel self-propagating method and processed at different temperatures to study phase evolution process. Unlike other ferrites, Co2Z hexaferrite was not synthesized directly by gel self-propagating technique, but was formed gradually from some intermediate phases due to its complicated crystalline structure. After Z-type phase formed at relatively low temperatures of 1200°C, the powders were annealed at temperatures lower than 1200°C. It was found that, once formed, this phase was quite stable. At the same time, the morphology and distribution of hexagonal particles was improved, and ceramic samples thus achieved from the relative powders presented excellent ultrahigh frequency magnetic properties.

Abstract:A simple and general procedure has been developed fbr the syntheses of ordered large-pore (up to 14 nm) mesoporous metal oxides, including TiO2, ZrO2, Nb2O5, Ta2O5, Al2O3, SiO2, SnO2, WO3, HfO2, and mixed oxides SiAlOy, Al2TiOy, ZrTiOy, SiTiOy, ZrW2Oy. Amphiphilic poly(alkylene oxide) block copolymers were used as structure-directing agents in nonaqueous solutions for organizing the network-forming metal oxide species. Inorganic salts, rather than alkoxides or organic metal complexes, were used as soluble and hydrolyzable precursors to the polymerized metal oxide framework. These thermally stable mesoporous oxides have robust inorganic frameworks and thick channel walls, within which high densities of nanocrystallites can be nucleated. These novel mesoporous metal oxides are believed to be formed through a mechanism that combines block copolymer self-assembly with alkylene oxide complexation of the inorganic metal species.
Morphology Development of Mesoporous Materials: A Colloidal Phase Separation Mechanism

Abstract:Synthetic conditions such as temperature, stirring rate, ionic strength, acidity, and reactant ratios that affect the mesostructures and macrostructures of mesoporous materials have been extensively studied in the nonionic block copolymer templating system. Highly ordered SBA-15 materials with similar to100% rodlike morphologies (similar to1-2 mum long) have been obtained in the presence of inorganic salts. Synthesis conditions such as low temperature, low acidity, and low ionic strength that increase the induction time give rise to the morphologies of mesoporous silica with increased curvatures. The particle growth process of rodlike SBA-15 materials from solutions has been examined by directly observing the morphologies of particles as a function of time. A colloidal phase separation mechanism (CPSM) for the formation of mesoporous materials is proposed. It is suggested that the formation process of mesoporous materials involves three stages: (1) cooperative self-assembly of inorganic/organic composites; (2) formation of a new crystal-like phase rich in aggregates of block copolymer/silica species; and (3) phase separation of this liquid crystal-like phase from the solution and further growth of solid mesostructures driven by further condensation of silica species. The morphologies of mesoporous materials are developed after the phase separation stage and influenced by the competition mainly between the free energy of mesostructure self-assembly (DeltaG) and the colloidal surface free energy (F), as well as other interactions such as the shearing force. When the phase separation stage occurs early, DeltaG is dominant and the macrostructure of mesoporous materials is developed together with the formation of mesostructure; therefore, mesoporous materials with crystal-like morphologies can be generated. The role of inorganic salts is well explained based on the CPSM by taking into account the colloidal interaction enhanced by inorganic salts. Cubic (Im (3) over barm) mesoporous single crystals have been obtained with exclusively rhombdodecahedron shapes (1-2 mum in size). Ultrathin microtoming TEM measurements confirm that such polyhedral particles are perfect single crystals. The different influences of hydrothermal treatments upon the mesostructures and macrostructures have been discussed in the hexagonal and cubic synthesis systems. By employing the CPSM, hexagonal mesoporous single crystals have been obtained in the absence of inorganic salts; the size limitation (similar to1-2 mum) of mesoporous single crystals has also been discussed. Such understandings may be useful in the fabrication of mesoporous materials with well-defined, crystal-like morphologies.
Diffusionless Transformation of Soft Cubic Superstructure from Amorphous to Simple Cubic and Body-Centered Cubic Phases

Abstract:In a narrow temperature window in going from the isotropic to highly chiral orders, cholesteric liquid crystals exhibit so-called blue phases, consisting of different morphologies of long, space-filling double twisted cylinders. Those of cubic spatial symmetry have attracted considerable attention in recent years as templates for soft photonic materials. The latter often requires the creation of monodomains of predefined orientation and size, but their engineering is complicated by a lack of comprehensive understanding of how blue phases nucleate and transform into each other at a submicrometer length scale. In this work, we accomplish this by intercepting nucleation processes at intermediate stages with fast cross-linking of a stabilizing polymer matrix. We reveal using transmission electron microscopy, synchrotron small-angle X-ray diffraction, and angle-resolved microspectroscopy that the grid of double-twisted cylinders undergoes highly coordinated, diffusionless transformations. In light of our findings, the implementation of several applications is discussed, such as temperature-switchable QR codes, micro-area lasing, and fabrication of blue phase liquid crystals with large domain sizes.

Abstract:Liquid-crystalline behaviour of rod-coil molecules is normally associated with the formation of calamitic mesophases; by increasing the volume fraction of coil segments via substitution of poly(propylene oxide) with degree of polymerization of 12 to an elongated rod, the rod-like mesogen can be assembled into cylindrical micelles, showing a hexagonal columnar mesophase.

Abstract:The self-assembly of symmetric coil-rod-coil ABA-type triblock copolymer melts is studied by applying self-consistent field lattice techniques in a three-dimensional space. The self-assembled ordered structures differ significantly with the variation of the volume fraction of the rod component, which include lamellar, wave lamellar, gyroid, perforated lamellar, cylindrical, and spherical-like phases. To understand the physical essence of these phases and the regimes of occurrence, we construct the phase diagram, which matches qualitatively with the existing experimental results. Compared with the coil-rod AB diblock copolymer, our results revealed that the interfacial grafting density of the separating rod and coil segments shows important influence on the self-assembly behaviors of symmetric coil-rod-coil ABA triblock copolymer melts. We found that the order-disorder transition point changes from f(rod)=0.5 for AB diblock copolymers to f(rod)=0.6 for ABA triblock copolymers. Our results also show that the spherical-like and cylindrical phases occupy most of the region in the phase diagram, and the lamellar phase is found stable only at the high volume fraction of the rod.
