Abstract:In the present study, a new low-cost bioceramic nanocomposite based on porous hydroxyapatite (HAp) and cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) as surfactant was successfully obtained by a simple chemical co-precipitation. The composition and structure of the HAp-CTAB were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscope (SEM) equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometer, and N2 adsorption/desorption analysis. The capacity of HAp-CTAB nanocomposites to remove the lead ions from aqueous solutions was studied by adsorption batch experiments and proved by Langmuir and Freundlich models. The Pb2+ removal efficiency of HAp-CTAB biocomposite was also confirmed by non-destructive ultrasound studies. The cytotoxicity assays showed that the HAp-CTAB nanocomposites did not induce any significant morphological changes of HeLa cells after 24 h of incubation or other toxic effects. Taken together, our results suggests that the obtained porous HAp-CTAB powder could be used for the decontamination of water polluted with heavy metals, such as Pb2+.

Abstract:It is of great significance and value to develop new phosphorus adsorbents to reduce water pollution and recycle phosphorus. In this work, Y 3+ was embedded in chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel beads by adsorption of amino functional groups and heavy metal ions, and a new type of yttrium chitosan-based hydrogel adsorbent (PC-Y-OH) was synthesized in situ on the hydrogel spheres by alkali treatment. The experimental results showed that the equilibrium pH affected the adsorption process of phosphate, and the adsorption capacity reached the highest value at pH 3. In addition, PC-Y-OH preferentially adsorbs phosphate when other substances (Cl - , NO 3 - , NO 2 - , HCO 3 - , SO 4 2- , NH 4 + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and humic acid) coexist. The adsorption mechanism of phosphate was mainly electrostatic interaction and ligand exchange under acidic conditions. However, ligand exchange and Lewis acid-base interaction were the main mechanisms in alkaline conditions. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics showed that the adsorption of phosphate was a multi-layer covering and chemisorption process and was non-spontaneous exothermic.

Abstract:Contamination of water with heavy metals such as lead is a major worldwide problem because they affect the physiological functions of living organisms, cause cancer, and damage the immune system. Hydroxyapatite, (Ca5(PO4)3OH) is considered one of the most effective materials for removing heavy metals from contaminated water. The hydroxyapatite nanopowders (N-HAp) obtained by a co-precipitation method were used in this research to determine the effectiveness in removing lead ions from contaminated solutions. In this study, we have investigated the structure and morphology of N-HAp nanopowders using X-ray diffraction (XRD), electronic transmission microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The structure information was also obtained by spectroscopy measurements. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy measurements revealed the presence of peaks corresponding to the phosphate and hydroxyl groups. The ability of N-HAp nanopowders to adsorb lead ions from aqueous solutions were established. The results of the kinetic and equilibrium studies on the removal of Pb (II) from aqueous solution revealed that the adsorption of lead (II) cations is due to the surface reaction with the hydroxyl terminal groups on the adsorbent and the combination of the positive charges of the metal cations with the negative charges on the adsorbent surfaces. These observations could validate the use of these ceramic nanopowders in ecological remediation strategies.

Abstract:In this study, a strontium-doped hydroxyapatite (Sr-HAP) was synthesized by the solgel method, which was used as adsorbent to remove lead ions (Pb2+) from water. The results showed that the adsorption capacities of the Sr-HAP were obviously higher than those of the HAP, the adsorption capacities of which for Pb2+ reached 651.175 mg/g. The proper increasement in the dosage of adsorbent was beneficial to the removal of Pb2+ by Sr-HAP. Meanwhile Sr-HAP had a wide applicable pH range for Pb2+. And the increasement in temperature could increase the adsorption capacity of Sr-HAP for Pb2+ to a certain extent. The Langmuir model was used to fit the isotherm adsorption process of Sr-HAP to Pb2+ in water. Compared with HAP, the specific surface area of Sr-HAP has increased by 11.1%, and the pore size distribution of Sr-HAP tended to be smaller and more uniform. Hence, Sr-HAP could be used as an ideal adsorbent to remove Pb2+ in wastewater.

Abstract:In this study, a simple two-step preparation method was used to prepare a new type of composite fiber adsorbent, metal–organic framework/chitosan/hydroxyapatite (ZIF-8 @CS/HAP), for the efficient removal of Lead ions(Pb(II))from water. The composite fiber was first characterized, and its surface morphology, functional groups, crystallinity, and pore structure were investigated. Subsequently, its optimal use environment was studied, and results found that the adsorbent could achieve the best effect in Pb(II) solution with a starting concentration of 200 mg/L at pH ≥ 6 and a temperature of around 298 K. The presence of coexisting ions (Co 2+ , Sr 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Cu 2+ ) had no significant effect on the selective removal of Pb(II) by ZIF-8 @CS/HAP. The process of ZIF-8 @CS/HAP adsorbing Pb(II) corresponded to the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, according to isotherm and kinetic investigations. The adsorption data fitted with the Langmuir model at 298 K reached a fitting degree (R 2 ) of 0.996, and the largest adsorption capacity up to 1058.2 mg/g, which is better than that in most fiber adsorbents. The adsorption mechanism could be attributed to the complexation of hydroxyl and amino groups on the surface of the composite fiber with Pb(II), the coprecipitation of phosphate groups with Pb(II), ion exchange, and electrostatic adsorption. This study provides an efficient adsorbent for treating Pb(II)-contaminated wastewater. Its preparation process is environmental-friendly and easy to use, and it has a high adsorption capacity. Therefore, it has a wide array of potential applications in the field of water treatment.

Abstract:Herein, novel porous hydroxyapatite sheets with high pore homogeneity are prepared via a self-assembly nonaqueous precipitation method. The optimized calcium source, phosphorus source and solvent are calcium acetate, disodium hydrogen phosphate and glycerin, respectively. Hexagonal plate-like hydroxyapatite polycrystals form in the replacement-rearrangement groups of raw materials and grow along the (002) crystal plane of the hydroxyapatite phase. Large hydroxyapatite sheets have homogeneous pore sizes of approximately 110 nm and thicknesses of approximately 20 nm. The hydroxyapatite sheets prepared via the nonaqueous precipitation method are highly active carbonate apatite. In a nonaqueous environment, assembly units of hexagonal plate-like hydroxyapatite polycrystals are triggered by the replacement and rearrangement of groups in the raw materials, and they self-assemble to form large hydroxyapatite sheets in the form of edge sharing. The degree of curvature in the process of plate-like hydroxyapatite self-assembly triggers the formation of porous hydroxyapatite sheets. This material has excellent adsorption performance for Pb2+ ions. The material developed in this work has wide application prospects in the fields of adsorption treatment of wastewater containing toxic ions (such as Pb2+), and it is expected to become a novel type of lead ion adsorbent.

Removal of Lead from Aqueous Solutions by Complexation Ultrafiltration with Chitosan

Abstract:The removal of lead from aqueous dilute solutions by complexation-ultrafiltration with chitosan was studied. Experiments were performed as a function of aqueous pH, chitosan/Pb2+ ratio, and background electrolyte concentration. The value of pH was found to be the most important parameter to effect the lead removal. The lead removal rate reaches the plateau at almost 100% when the chitosan and lead ratio goes more than 4.0 at pH 6.0. With transmembrane pressure (TMP) 0.1 MPa, chitosan/Pb2+ ratio 4 and pH 6, the lead removal rate decreases sharply from 99.2% to 19.5% as the adding NaCl concentration increases from 0 to 500 mmol. The regeneration of the chitosan by acidification using diafiltration technique was further performed. In the end, the effect of regenerated chitosan on the lead removal was evaluated. At the optimum experimental condition of pH 6.0, regenerated chitosan/Pb2+ ratio 4 and TMP 0.10 MPa, the lead removal rate was found to be 96.2%, which is almost the same as that obtained on the original chitosan. The overall results from the two-step process of complexation-UF and decomplexation-UF separation showed that it could be a promising method for lead removal and recovery from aqueous solutions.
Fabrication of electrospun cellulose/chitosan/ball-milled bone char membranes for efficient and selective sorption of Pb(II) from aqueous solutions

Abstract:Separation materials have received increasing attention given their broad applications in the management of environmental pollution. It is desired to balance the contradiction between high separation efficiency and selectivity of separation materials. The integration of ball-milled bone chars with electrospun membranes might achieve this balance. In this study, electrospun cellulose/chitosan/ball-milled bone char (CL/CS/MB) membranes were by well-dispersing ball-milled bone chars with nanoscale size (98.9-167.5 nm) and developed porosity (40.2-373.1 m2/g) in the electrospinning solvent. The synergistic integration of distributed MBs (5.4-31.5 wt.% of loading hydroxyapatite on the membrane matrix) allowed the efficient sorption of Pb(II) with fast kinetics (20.0 min), excellent capacity (219.9 mg/g at pH 5.0, T 298 K), and favorable selectivity coefficients (2.76-6.79). The formation of minerals was dominant for the selective sorption of Pb(II) by combining the spectral analysis and quantitative determination. The surface complexation with O-/reductive N-species, the cation exchange with inorganic Ca2+, the electrostatic attraction with deprotonated O-, and the cation-π coordination with the aromatic carbon via the π-electrons should be not ignored for the capture of Pb(II). This work demonstrated the feasibility of electrospun CL/CS/MB membranes as a promising candidate for the remediation of aquatic pollutants.

Abstract:We report the synthesis of rod-like hydroxyapatite nanopowder from waste eggshells (decomposed to CaO) and phosphoric acid at room temperature without pH control. The procedure involves the use of a syringe pump to control the addition rate of the phosphoric acid in order to maintain a stable pH. Results revealed that pure, rod-like, and nano-size hydroxyapatite particles were produced at various addition rates. Moreover, the sample obtained from 200 ml/h addition rate exhibited large surface area (160.1 m(2)/g) and pore volume (1.0 cm(3)/g). Consequently, the prepared hydroxyapatite and that previously produced as adsorbents showed fast adsorption rates (10 min) as well as very high maximum adsorption (q(m) = 994.5 mg/g and 1000.5 mg/g, respectively) for Pb2+ in aqueous solution. Furthermore, the adsorption process revealed a pseudo-second-order reaction model and the equilibrium adsorption could be described by Langmuir model. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Novel HAp porous skeleton material with high pore homogeneity is prepared via nonaqueous precipitation method combined with medium-temperature induced intermolecular polycondensation. The obtained porous skeleton HAp material, which has characteristics of highly uniform hexagonal pore, is characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and Pb2+ removal performance test. The results show that the porous skeleton material presents with a highly uniform hexagonal pore. Both of the pore sizes and pore wall particles sizes have the average values of about 350 nm, with a different sizes range of 120–680 nm and 120–780 nm, respectively. HAp porous skeleton material has Pb2+ ions removal performance almost equivalent to that of nano porous sheets, because of its very uniform distribution of elements and three-dimensional structure caused by the uniform connection of the penetrating structure, group assembly, and intermolecular condensation. HAp porous skeleton material has much better separation performance and can effectively avoid problems of secondary pollution and difficulty for separation. HAp porous skeleton material is expected to be a novel excellent adsorbent for Pb 2+ ions purifying in industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Alkaline residue, a common solid waste generated from the ammonia-soda process for the production of soda ash, has been converted into hydroxyapatite for Pb2+ removal from wastewater. Response surface methodology was used to optimize the preparation conditions which were Ca/P (molar ratio), reaction temperature and reaction time, with the Pb2+ removal percentage as targeted response. The optimum conditions were identified to be Ca/P of 1.29, reaction temperature of 165.87 degrees C and reaction time of 14.5h. Batch tests were conducted to evaluate the adsorption performance of optimum adsorbent ( O-HAP), and the adsorption data were analyzed with different kinetic and isotherm models. The results showed that the pseudo-second order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model could best describe the adsorption of Pb2+ on O-HAP. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated from Langmuir equation was 1429 mg/g, which was greater than other familiar adsorbents. The MINTEQ results predicted that the formation of different Pb precipitates was the main mechanism in Pb2+ removal process, which was in good agreement with the kinetic and thermodynamic studies and were confirmed by the SEM-EDS and XRD analysis. Performance of oxalate-doped hydroxyapatite as well as relative contribution of oxalate and phosphate for aqueous lead removal

Abstract:An oxalate-doped hydroxyapatite (O-HAP) was hydrothermally synthesized for aqueous lead (Pb) removal based on the solubility-limiting ability of oxalate and phosphate over pH range 4–9. Free Pb2+ activities in oxalate and/or phosphate systems were controlled by oxalate to form soluble ion pairs Pb-Ox (aq) and Pb-Ox22− at pH 4–7 while in preference to persist as PbHPO4 (aq) when pH ≥ 8. Both phosphate and oxalate exhibited excellent efficiency in reducing Pb solubility, causing over 99 % of Pb precipitated from solution following oxalate < oxalate-phosphate < phosphate. The Visual MINTEQ model overestimated dissolved Pb and free Pb2+ in nearly all of the reaction systems due to the ill-defined stability constants and solubility products for Pb ion-pair formation. The addition of phosphate acting as a buffer in Pb-oxalate systems tended to lessen the spontaneous pH shifts within 24 h to equilibrate proton release from Pb precipitation and hydrolysis, indicating lower solubility products and faster kinetics of Pb-phosphate mineral formation. The TEM-EDS, FTIR and XRD identified a block-shaped Pb-oxalate mineral phase as the only precipitate at acidic pH while substituted by phosphate to form rod-shaped Pb5(PO4)3OH and Pb3(PO4)2 precipitates as pH increased. The optimum hydrothermal conditions of O-HAP were 433 K, pH 9 and P/Ox doping ratio of 0.5 for 24 h. Batch experiments revealed the endothermic process of O-HAP toward Pb with the maximum adsorption capacity reaching 2333 mg/g at a pH of 7, reaction time of 12 h, initial Pb concentration of 600 mg/L and temperature of 308 K, which were best fitted with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm. The synergetic mechanisms of O-HAP for Pb removal involved dissolution-precipitation, adsorption and ion exchange. This study provides an insight in developing effective remediation strategies for heavy metal contamination by interacting between low-molecular-weight organic acids and secondary mineral phases.

Abstract:The aim of the work is to develop a novel chitosan modified MCM-41-A, for Pb(II) removal from aqueous solution. This novel material was synthesized by one-step crystallization method and modified by chitosan. The adsorbent was characterized via scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, N-2-BET analysis and thermo-gravimetric analysis. Batch experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of contact time, initial pH, adsorbent dose and initial concentration on Pb(II) adsorption. Kinetic and thermodynamic modelings were carried out and sorption data interpreted in terms of the Langmuir and Freundlich equations. Results showed that, the optimal dosage, initial pH and reaction time in the initial Pb(II) concentration of 100 mg L-1 solution are 3 g L-1, pH = 6, and 60 min, respectively, at which the removal efficiency of Pb(II) was 99.83%. The equilibrium data fitted Langmuir isotherm better than Freundlich isotherm, and they were well explained by pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Abstract:With rising global concerns about the discharge of large volumes of waste materials derived from industrial manufacture and human life, methods for utilizing waste materials have been greatly developed. In this study, an ingenious hydroxyapatite (Hap) functionalized hierarchical porous biochar (HB) composite is fabricated using a filtrate rich in Ca2+ ions after steel slag reuse and spent Hami melon peel as raw materials. Microstructural analyses indicate that Hap nanoparticles are loaded on HB with hierarchical pores produced from a pyrolysis process of Hami melon peel. A series of HB-Hap materials by tuning HB addition amount (0.5, 1, and 2 g) can be obtained through a coprecipitation process. As a case study, HB-0.5Hap exhibits high specific surface area of 66.92 m(2)/g and high-efficiency removal performance for Pb(II) and Cd(II) ions in wastewater. The maximum adsorption capacities of HB-0.5Hap are 134.4 (Pb(II)) and 60.4 (Cd(II)) mg/g, which are 1.77 and 1.23 times higher than that of pure HB, respectively. It is attributed to a synergistic mechanism involving ion exchange, chemical precipitation, surface complexation, and cation-pi interaction. According to a semi-quantitative calculation, ion exchange plays a major role in the removal of Pb(II) (78.61%, the relative contribution of ion exchange mechanism) and Cd(II) (77.77%). This study demonstrates a facile, economical, and sustainable strategy for the value-added utilization of steel slag and spent Hami melon peel, which can be critical in solving environmental problems.

The hydroxyapatite composite was synthesized by using CaCl2 and (NH4)2HPO4 powders as raw material through simple grinding, and then being assisted with microwave. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses were applied to characterize the adsorbent sample. Pb2+ adsorption was performed by discussing the effects of various factors, such as initial pH, initial Pb2+ concentration, adsorbent dosage, and contact time. Co-existing ions (Na+ and Ca2+) showed little influence on Pb2+ adsorption, and were absorbed onto MHAP on the contrary. The adsorption kinetics of MHAP was well described by the pseudo-second-order model, and the equilibrium adsorption data showed a high correlation coefficient with the Langmuir isotherm model. Thermodynamically, the adsorption process of Pb2+ onto MHAP was spontaneous, endothermic and favorable in nature as ΔG° < 0, ΔH° > 0, and ΔS° > 0. The maximum adsorption capacity of synthesized MHAP for Pb2+ was 1438.85 mg/g according to the Langmuir adsorption model, significantly higher than many other adsorbents. It suggested that the mesoporous MHAP synthesized in this study was an effective and promising material for Pb2+ removal from aqueous solution.

Abstract:This paper presents the utilization of sodium alginate (SA) as a raw material to construct a double network structure through the incorporation of chitosan (CS) and the electrostatic polymerization of SA. Subsequently, by employing polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a functional material, a modified SA/CS/PVA composite hydrogel (SCPH) was prepared via the Ca(II) ion exchange method. The hydro-gel exhibited a flocculent form, thereby greatly enhancing the removal of Pb(II). The adsorption process of Pb(II) by the SCPH reached equilibrium within 30 min, achieving a remarkable removal rate of 97.45% and a maximum adsorption capacity of 147.93 mg/g (298 K). A series of characterization analyses have been employed to investigate the structure and adsorption mechanism of hydrogels, and the adsorption mechanism involves ion exchange, electrostatic attraction, as well as the complexation of hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted at different temperatures and pH levels, and the kinetics and isotherms were investigated. The Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model were found to best fit the experimental data, suggesting the feasibility of using the SCPH as an efficient adsorbent for Pb(II) removal. Moreover, the dual network structure constructed by SA and CS significantly enhances the adsorption performance of SCPH. At the same time, PVA strengthens the mechanical strength of SCPH, which is favorable for recycling. As a low-cost and efficient adsorbent, SCPH can be widely used in water treatment.

Abstract:In this study, novel composite titanium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) beads were synthesized from titanium based metal organic framework MIL-125 and chitosan (CS) and used to remove Pb(II) from wastewater. The MIL-125-CS beads were prepared by combining the titanium-based MIL-125 MOF and chitosan using a template-free solvothermal approach under ambient conditions. The surface and elemental properties of these beads were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies, as well as thermal gravimetric analysis. Moreover, a series of experiments designed to determine the influences of factors such as initial Pb(II) concentration, pH, reaction time and adsorption temperature was conducted. Notably, it was found that the adsorption of Pb(II) onto the MIL-125-CS beads reached equilibrium in 180 min to a level of 407.50 mg/g at ambient temperature. In addition, kinetic and equilibrium experiments provided data that were fit to the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetics. Furthermore, reusability tests showed that MIL-125-CS retained 85% of its Pb(II)-removal capacity after five reuse cycles. All in all, we believe that the developed MIL-125-CS beads are a promising adsorbent material for the remediation of environmental water polluted by heavy metal ions.
Preparation of Freeze-Dried Porous Chitosan Microspheres for the Removal of Hexavalent Chromium

Abstract:Novel porous chitosan microspheres were successfully produced by a freezing–lyophilization drying method in this study and were then used as adsorbents to remove a toxic iron metal, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The effects of the concentration of the chitosan solution, syringe diameter, and freezing time on the morphologies of porous chitosan microspheres were characterized. The metal ion adsorption for Cr(VI) was also studied. Results showed that freezing chitosan hydrogel beads at a temperature of −20 °C and subsequently lyophilizing the frozen structure allowed to easily obtain the porous chitosan microspheres with rough surfaces and large pores, which were more suitable for adsorption materials to remove metal ions. A chitosan solution concentration of 3% (w/v) and a syringe diameter of 500 μm allowed the porous microspheres to have a good sphericity, thinner pore walls, and small pore sizes. The adsorption capacity of porous chitosan microspheres for Cr(VI) increased with the increase in freezing time. The pH of the initial adsorption solution ranged from 3.0 to 5.0 and was beneficial to the maximum adsorption efficiency for Cr(VI). The porous chitosan microspheres prepared with 3% (w/v) chitosan solution at −20 °C for a freezing time of 72 h had a higher adsorption capacity of 945.2 mg/g for Cr(VI) than the those at 24-h and 48-h freezing times. Kinetic study showed that the adsorption process could be described by a pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetic model. The equilibrium adsorption rate constant and the adsorption amount at equilibrium for the porous chitosan microspheres increased with an increase in the freezing time, and those for the porous microspheres prepared with 3% chitosan solution at −20 °C for a 72-h freezing time were 1.83 × 10−5 g mg−1 min−1 and 1070.5 mg g−1, respectively. The porous chitosan microspheres have good potential to facilitate the separation and recycling of expensive and toxic Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Abstract:ZIF-67@CS composites were prepared by in-situ growth method. The phase and structure of ZIF-67@CS composite were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). The morphology of the materials was characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (SEM). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements demonstrated the existence of Pb(II) after the adsorption process of composite materials. The adsorption of Pb(II) by composite material conforms to Langmuir model, the theoretical maximum adsorption capacity is 505.051 mg/g. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model can well describe the adsorption kinetic process.
