Abstract:It is challenging to effectively purge wastewater containing heavy metal ions at low concentration. In order to remove trace Cr (VI) from wastewater efficiently, a positively charged microporous membrane was prepared by firstly non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) of amphiphilic polymer and secondly surface quaternization modification. The morphologies, surface roughness, surface charge, hydrophilicity, and pore size of membranes were characterized. Based on the dual action of micellar adsorption and charge repulsion, when surfactant is 4 mM and Cr (VI) is 60 ppm, the surface quaternization membrane (Q-MPVD) achieves 99.8 % Cr (VI) rejection simultaneously accompanied by a permeability of 100 LMH/bar. Meanwhile, the effects of STAC concentration, Cr (VI) concentration, pH as well as inorganic salt concentration on the composite micellar size, and Cr (VI) rejection performance were investigated, respectively. Moreover, the Q-MPVD membrane shows an excellent separation stability over a wide pH range, indicating its application perspective in engineering process. In summary, this work provided a positively charged membrane with high-efficiency performance for treating practical trace Cr (VI)-containing industrial wastewater.
Highly efficient hexavalent chromium removal on polyethylenimine@NH2-MIL-101(Cr) composite

Abstract:Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) is regarded as a water pollutant because of its high toxicity in aquatic environments. In this study, polyethyleneimine-functionalised NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) (PEI@NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr)) was fabricated by a facile wet impregnation method, and its effectiveness at removing Cr(VI) from wastewater was systematically investigated. As suggested by the experimental findings, pH was a significant determinant of Cr(VI) uptake by the fabricated PEI@NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr). Preferable depiction of adsorption system was achievable with the Langmuir adsorption model and the pseudo-order 2 kinetic model. At 288, 298, and 308 K, the highest adsorbability values were 241.55, 310.56, and 408.16 mg g −1 , respectively. Processes like electrostatic attraction, reduction and chelation helped promote the Cr(VI) elimination. SO42− ions had a relatively large impact on the Cr(VI) adsorption compared with other coexisting ions such as NO3− , Cl − and H2PO4−1 . Because of its properties of high adsorption capacity and Cr(VI) detoxification, the potential of PEI@NH 2 -MIL-101(Cr) in the Cr(VI) elimination from wastewater appears to be promising.

Abstract:A series of imidazolium-based ionic polymer (ImIP2Br, ImIP3Br and ImIP4Br) were successfully prepared by quaternization reaction of 1,4-dimethyl bromide benzene, 1,3,5-tri(bromomethyl), 1,2,4,5-tetramethyl and 1,3,5-tri(1H-imidazol-1-yl)benzene. The as-prepared ImIP2Br, ImIP3Br and ImIP4Br ionic polymers were characterized by SEM, STEM, FTIR, TG and solid-state 13C NMR measurement. In the aqueous solution of [imidazolium] to [Cr] 1:1, the removal rate of Cr(VI) by ImIP4Br was 98.4%, which was much higher than that of ImIP2Br, ImIP3Br. In addition, the ImIP4Br was applied for efficient removal of Cr(VI) for extremely low concentration of Cr(VI) solution and electroplating industry wastewater by anion exchange. Finally, a series of experimentals studies were performed to study the enrichment of hexavalent chromium and evaluate the recycling and reproducibility of ImIP4Br. The result showed the concentration of the residual Cr(VI) is only 0.09 mg L−1, which is lower than the permissible limit of Cr(VI) discharge (0.10 mg L−1) according to the regulations of the US Environmental Protection Agency. For the actual electroplating wastewater, the adsorption efficiency of ImIP4Br for Cr(VI) is over 99.8%, despite the competitive adsorption of other ions in the solution. In a word, ImIP4Br shows outstanding enrichment ability, good regenerative ability and superior recyclability for removal of Cr(VI). The combination of promising removal performances endows ImIP4Br with great promises for capture and separation of Cr(VI) from contaminated water systems.

Abstract:In this study, polyethylenimine-functionalized poly(vinyl alcohol) (PEI-PVA) films were prepared for the first time to remove aqueous Cr(vi). The results indicate that our PEI-PVA films have an excellent potential for Cr(vi) removal and their maximum removal capacity was 396.83 mg g-1. The optimized pH value was 2, the adsorption of Cr(vi) was fitted to the Langmuir model, and the kinetics of uptake could be described well by a pseudo-second-order rate model. Taking into account the simplified separation method of adsorbents and solutions, we used a PVA film as a carrier in which PEI-PVA microspheres were filled to obtain a PEI-PVA functionalized film (PPF). The PPF shows a great efficiency in the removal of Cr(vi) ions in solution, which can absorb and reduce the Cr(vi) ion concentration in the solution in 90 min. PPF has excellent selectivity and the removal efficiency of Cr(vi) ions in the presence of co-existing ions is not reduced. It also has good recycling properties; the removal efficiency remains at 77% over four cycles. The removal mechanism of Cr(vi) ions by PEI-PVA microspheres involves the reduction of the adsorbed Cr(vi) ions to Cr(iii) ions, which are less toxic.
Efficient Removal of Cr(VI) Through Adsorption with Reduced Cr(III) Sequestration by Highly Hydrophilic Poly(pyrrole Methane)

Abstract:The present study successfully synthesized a novel functionalized poly(pyrrole methane) adsorbent with superior hydrophilicity, which effectively combines polypyrrole and polyphenols for the efficient removal of Cr(VI) through adsorption-reduction-sequestration in water. The removal of Cr(VI) by polyphenol-functionalized poly (pyrrole methane) (PhPPm) is pH-dependent, with the optimum value of pH 1.5. For the high hydrophilicity, PhPPm demonstrates rapid Cr(VI) removal from water, reducing the Cr(VI) from 10 and 50 mg center dot L-1 center dot L- 1 to less than 0.1 mg center dot L-1 center dot L- 1 within 3 and 30 min, respectively. The maximum Langmuir theoretical adsorption capacity of PhPPm for Cr(VI) is estimated as 648 mg center dot g- center dot g- 1 at 318 K. And the thermodynamic parameters show that the adsorption process of Cr(VI) is endothermic, entropy-increasing and spontaneous. Co-existing ions such as K+, + , Na+, + , Mg2+, 2+ , Ca2+, 2+ , Cl-and- and NO3-do 3- do not interfere with the Cr(VI) removal, while only SO42-exhibits 4 2- exhibits a slight inhibitory effect due to its more negative charge and similar molecular structure to Cr(VI). Characterization techniques (FT-IR, XPS) combined with DFT calculations confirm that the removal mechanism of Cr(VI) involves electrostatic interactions, adsorption-reduction and chelation, among which strong chelation is the main contributor to the effective sequestration of Cr(III). This study demonstrated that PhPPm is an effective adsorbent for the purification of Cr(VI)-contaminated wastewater.

Abstract:Cr (VI) accumulates in an aqueous environment and exhibits huge harm to human health and the ecological system. Developed lignin biomass materials are complicated to prepare and have limited properties, and advances in lignin phenolic modification are lacking. Herein, an aminated poplar lignin-pyrogallol (PLP-PEI) with a simple design and adjustable phenolic hydroxyl content was developed using the acid hydrolysis-phase separation (AH-PS) method, and modified by the atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) strategy. Through diverse characterization analysis, the structural changes of PLP-PEI in the step-by-step synthesis process were monitored. An effective biomass capture system (Bio-Cap) was shown via systematically investigating the adsorption behaviors of Cr (VI) on PLP-PEI under various environmental conditions. Benefiting from introducing phenolic hydroxyl and amino groups, PLP-PEI demonstrated efficient adsorption capacity (598.80 mg/g for Cr (VI)). Additionally, the material also exhibited advantages, including monomeric chemisorption properties, strong reduction capability, and stable regeneration properties. Multiple driving forces were involved in the capture and removal process of Cr (VI), including complexation and electrostatic interaction. The low-cost natural biomass resources supported the industrial-scale synthesis and practical application of advanced aminated lignin polyphenol material, which showed outstanding advantages and enormous potential in the field of water environmental restoration.

Abstract:Adsorbents with fast kinetics and high capacity have always been attractive for wastewater treatment. Herein, multi-shelled hollow mesoporous organosilica functionalized by hydroxyphosphatoethyl groups on dual-pore surfaces (P-HMO) is prepared by general one-pot co-condensation. The resulting P-HMO exhibits high hydrophilicity, large surface area and well-developed pore structure, providing P-HMO fast adsorption kinetics (C 0 = 320 mg·L -1 , equilibrium within 5 min) and ultrahigh adsorption efficiency for Pb(II) and Cr(VI), the adsorption capacity reaches 1056.53 and 869.56 mg·g −1 , respectively. Furthermore, P-HMO displays outstanding reusability over 10 adsorption–desorption cycles thanks to the stable framework structure that can resist wear and tear during water treatment. The advantages of long service life, high efficiency and broad pH range make P-HMO promising in industrial water purification.

Abstract:Facile fabrication of the ultra-high-performance adsorbent can effectively ameliorate the Cr(VI)-pollution elimination in sewage control. Herein, a simple synthesis strategy is proposed to tap a versatile chelating resin poly(pyrogallol-tetraethylene pentamine) (PPTA) with respect to Cr(VI) removal from solution. Multiple changing factors which affect the adsorption behavior of PPTA are explored sequentially, such as initial pH, adsorbate concentration, adsorbent dosage, temperature, foreign ions, etc. The microstructure and functional mechanism of synthetic adsorbent are investigated systematically by means of various characterizations including TEM, EDS, FT-IR, XPS, etc. Consequently, the as-prepared PPTA-3 microsphere by reactant ratio of 1: 1 represents a brilliant synergistic adsorption and reduction result for Cr(VI) by the drastic electrostatic interaction of -NH3+ and -OH2+ groups, including satisfactory removal efficiency which closes to 100 % in low concentration, favorable specificity for the influence from coexistent ions (Mo(VI), Mn(VII), Cl-, Cr(III), etc), and passable recyclability. Following the surpassingly fitting with Langmuir isotherm model, its maximum capacity reaches 714.29 mg g-1 at 30 °C. The removal performance is essentially in agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetics, simultaneously, suffers the rate-limiting impact depending on intra-particle diffusion process. In brief, this newly developed chelating resin presents an effective means with regard to the Cr(VI)-wastewater treatment or other uses in the future.

Abstract:The porous N-methylimidazolium functionalized strongly basic anion exchange resins (PCl) were synthesized, characterized and applied for Cr(VI) adsorption from electroplating wastewater. FT-IR and elemental analysis of PCl were used to characterize the structure and the content of functional groups of PCl. The bath model results show that the adsorption capacities of PCl for Cr(VI) are above 139 mg g(-1) at pH range 2.0-5.0, and the Cr(VI) can be easily desorbed with the mixture solution of 0.2 mol L-1 NaOH + 0.2 mol L-1 NaCl. PCl resins with precipitation technologies were successfully used for the separation and recovery of toxic Cr(VI), and co-existing Cr(III), Fe(III), Cu(II), Zn(II), Ni(II), and Al(III) heavy metals from electroplating wastewater in the bench scale. Cr(VI) was separated and precipitated as value industrial product BaCrO4 with purity higher than 99%. The recovery yields of other heavy metals are more than 99% within the optimum pH values range from 8.0 to 9.0. After the treatment of the wastewater using PCl-based high efficient, economical and clean technique, the concentrations of total Cr, Cr(VI) and other heavy metals in water are less than the national emission standard.

Abstract:In this study, flower molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) was surface-modified with polyethyleneimine(PEI) to prepare PEI/MoS2 composite adsorbents for Cr(VI) enrichment in aqueous solution. The physicochemical properties of PEI/MoS2 were characterized by SEM, TEM, XRD, FTIR, BET and XPS methods. The influences of PEI loading, solution pH, contact time, adsorption temperature, and initial Cr(VI) ion concentration on the adsorption performance of PEI/MoS2 for Cr(VI) were investigated. Under the optimal conditions, and the initial Cr(VI) ion concentration is 50 mg L− 1, the adsorption capacity of PEI/MoS2 is 120.7 mg g− 1. The adsorption rate is fast, equilibrium time is 6 h. Competitive adsorption studies of the Cr(VI), Co(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) quaternion system were also investigated, the results indicated that selectively adsorbed amount of Cr(VI) on PEI/MoS2 is significantly higher than that of Co(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) ions. The adsorption process was spontaneous and conformed to Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second kinetic model. The consecutive adsorption-desorption experiments indicated that the PEI/MoS2 has excellent reusability.

An Integrated Process for Removal and Recovery of Cr(VI) from Electroplating Wastewater by Ion Exchange and Reduction–precipitation Based on a Silica-Supported Pyridine Resin

Abstract:Chromium and its compounds are widely used in industry, but Cr(VI) derived from processes such as electroplating is harmful to humans. Thus, it is necessary to remove and recycle Cr(VI) for chromium resource preservation and to prevent toxicity issues. In this study, a facile process that combines ion exchange and reduction-precipitation based on a silica-based pyridine resin is proposed to remove and recover Cr(VI) from electroplating wastewater. A strong-base silica-supported pyridine resin, SiPyR-N4, was firstly employed to selectively remove Cr(VI) through ion exchange. Batch experiment results suggested that SiPyR-N4 could reach sorption equilibrium within 5 min with a 99.3% removal efficiency from a 100 mg/L Cr(VI) solution at a pH of 4, which demonstrates the excellent adsorption kinetics. Furthermore, silica-based resin in a column functions even at a high flow rate of 6 mL/min. By comparison, the Cr(VI) treatment capacity of the D201 resin was less than half that of SiPyR-N4, and the IRA-400 resin was completely disabled under the same conditions. These results demonstrated that ion exchange using SiPyR-N4 is a rapid and efficient approach for Cr(VI) removal. For reduction-precipitation, reductive desorption desorbed 96.67% with a concentration factor of 11.84 at a desorption rate of 2 mL/min, and 98.6% high-purity chromium was recovered by precipitation. Based on these results, a procedure combining ion exchange and reduction-precipitation was employed, which could rapidly remove highly toxic Cr(VI) to protect the environment and effectively recycle chromium resources for sustainable development. Abstract:The effective removal of toxic Cr(VI) from wastewater remains an important environmental issue. The low adsorption capacity and the complex processes to separate the adsorbents from the treated wastewater are the main scientific and technological challenges. In this study, a flexible and free-standing pristine polypyrrole (PPy) membrane with a nanotube structure (PPy-N) was synthesized via template-assisted interfacial polymerization (TIP) for the selective removal of Cr(VI) through a simple separation and collection process. The superior Cr(VI) adsorption capacity as high as 250.31 mg/g was endowed by the unique structure of the PPy-N membrane. The Langmuir adsorption isotherm model was used to describe the adsorption behavior, with the adsorption kinetics followed a quasi-second-order kinetic model. After four adsorption-and–desorption cycles, the PPy-N membrane adsorption capacity fell by only 8.2%. The mechanism of the selective removal of Cr(VI) was proposed, including electrostatic adsorption, ion exchange and reduction. A combination of the highly attractive material properties, including mechanical processability, large surface area, superior Cr(VI) adsorption capacity and regeneration, makes the single-component PPy-N membrane a good candidate for removing Cr(VI) ions from wastewater.

Abstract:Polyethyleneimine(PEI) was used in polymer enhanced ultrafiltration to remove strontium ion(Sr2+) and cobalt ion(Co2+) from industrial wastewater.Effects of concentration ratio of polymer and metal ion,pH and ionic strength on Sr2+ and Co2+ removal were investigated.Optimum pH values on Sr2+ and Co2+ removal are 5 and 9,respectively;optimum P / M values are 10 for both metals.Under optimum conditions,removal rates of Sr2+ and Co2+ are 59 % and 100 %,respectively.The results show that PEI enhanced ultrafiltration can effectively increase the removal rates of Sr2+ and Co2+(especially Co2+) from industrial wastewater.

Abstract:To date, highly toxic heavy metal ions from wastewater seriously deteriorate the aquatic environment safety. This study proposes an adsorbent that can be adopted to remove heavy metal ions by combining environmentally friendly cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), sodium alginate (SA), and amino-rich polyethyleneimine using a ferric chloride- and glutaraldehyde-mediated crosslinking process and yielding a porous hollow bead (CS-Fe@PEI). The bead has a hollow porous structure according to SEM and a high nitrogen content of 13.85 wt% with numerous active adsorption sites, which are beneficial to the adsorption of heavy metal ions. Chromium was chosen as the main model pollutant for batch adsorption experiments. CS-Fe@PEI has excellent adsorption capacity of 526.32 mg/g for Cr(VI) at 298 K, which conforms with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. The stable hollow structure allowed the regeneration of the CS-Fe@PEI beads for more than six cycles after Cr(VI) adsorption. According to FT-IR, Zeta, and XPS analyses, the beads effectively adsorbed the pollutants by electrostatic interaction, reducing the hypertoxic Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Furthermore, the beads also possessed a superior adsorption capacity for heavy metal cations (Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), and Pb(II)). These results demonstrated that the fabricated CS-Fe@PEI beads were an efficient and reusable adsorbent, with a high potential for removing heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater.

Abstract:Hierarchical porous polypyrrole (PPy) nanoclusters composed of small PPy nanospheres were successfully prepared in one-step by a reactive-template method without any surfactants. The Fe3O4 nanoclusters acted as both the template for shaping PPy structure and oxidant source simultaneously. The dosage of pyrrole monomer, the concentration of HCl acid had significant influence on the structures and conductivities of the resulting PPy nanoclusters. By carefully controlling the experimental conditions, hierarchical porous PPy nanoclusters with the surface area as high as 10(4) m(2) g(-1) were obtained. The value was about 3.5 times larger than that of traditional PPy nanoparticles. Based on the transmission electron microscope (TEM) images and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectra, a possible formation mechanism was proposed and investigated in detail. To test the feasibility of using the PPy nanoclusters in real applications, the capacity of nanoclusters as a heavy metal ion remover was explored. The resulting PPy nanoclusters showed an excellent ability to remove Cr(VI) ions in aqueous solution.

Abstract:The detrimental effects of anthropogenic heavy metal pollution on the environment have recently become a pressing concern, with Pb2+ ions emerging as a particularly hazardous pollutant. In this paper, we report the synthesis and characterization of light-driven mesoporous silica-IP (iron phthalocyanine) nanomaterials that exhibit remarkable efficiency and selectivity in the removal of Pb2+ ions from wastewater. The fibrous structure of the material provides a large specific surface area and adsorption sites, enabling it to achieve a theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 69.78 mg/g. In addition, our studies of the adsorption effect of actual wastewater showed a significant reduction in the concentration of Pb2+ ions to 1.76 mg/L, indicating the excellent effectiveness of the material in treating contaminated water sources. In addition, the photosensitive material on the surface of the material provides reliable light-driving capability, enabling rapid separation of Pb2+ ions from wastewater with a maximum movement speed of 26 μm/s.

Abstract:In this study, a simple two-step preparation method was used to prepare a new type of composite fiber adsorbent, metal–organic framework/chitosan/hydroxyapatite (ZIF-8 @CS/HAP), for the efficient removal of Lead ions(Pb(II))from water. The composite fiber was first characterized, and its surface morphology, functional groups, crystallinity, and pore structure were investigated. Subsequently, its optimal use environment was studied, and results found that the adsorbent could achieve the best effect in Pb(II) solution with a starting concentration of 200 mg/L at pH ≥ 6 and a temperature of around 298 K. The presence of coexisting ions (Co 2+ , Sr 2+ , Ni 2+ , Cd 2+ , and Cu 2+ ) had no significant effect on the selective removal of Pb(II) by ZIF-8 @CS/HAP. The process of ZIF-8 @CS/HAP adsorbing Pb(II) corresponded to the Langmuir model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, according to isotherm and kinetic investigations. The adsorption data fitted with the Langmuir model at 298 K reached a fitting degree (R 2 ) of 0.996, and the largest adsorption capacity up to 1058.2 mg/g, which is better than that in most fiber adsorbents. The adsorption mechanism could be attributed to the complexation of hydroxyl and amino groups on the surface of the composite fiber with Pb(II), the coprecipitation of phosphate groups with Pb(II), ion exchange, and electrostatic adsorption. This study provides an efficient adsorbent for treating Pb(II)-contaminated wastewater. Its preparation process is environmental-friendly and easy to use, and it has a high adsorption capacity. Therefore, it has a wide array of potential applications in the field of water treatment.

Abstract:The discharge of lead and cadmium wastewater, along with the pollution caused by phosphogypsum, represents a particularly urgent environmental issue. This study employed a straightforward hydrothermal method to convert phosphogypsum into porous calcium silicate hydrate (P-CSH), which was then used to remove and recover Pb(II) and Cd(II) from wastewater. The adsorption capacities of P-CSH for Pb(II) and Cd(II) were notably high at 989.3 mg/g and 290.3 mg/g, respectively. The adsorption processes adhered to the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Langmuir isotherm model. Due to identical adsorption sites on P-CSH for both Pb(II) and Cd(II), competitive interaction occurred when both ions were present simultaneously. Additionally, the adsorption efficacy was minimally impacted by the presence of common coexisting cations in wastewater. The dominant mechanisms for removing Pb(II) and Cd(II) via P-CSH were chemical precipitation and surface complexation. Moreover, the adsorbed heavy metals were efficiently separated and reclaimed from the wastewater through a stepwise desorption process. The primary components of the residue from stepwise desorption were quartz and amorphous SiO2. Following dissolution via pressurized alkaline leaching, this residue could be recycled for synthesizing P-CSH. This research offered a new strategy for the resourceful use of phosphogypsum and heavy metal wastewater.

Abstract:Sorptive removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) bears the advantages of simple operation and easy construction. Customized polymeric materials are the attracting adsorbents due to their selectivity, chemical and mechanical stabilities. The mostly investigated polymeric materials for removing Cr(VI) were reviewed in this work. Assembling of robust functional groups, reduction of self-aggregation, and enhancement of stability and mechanical strength, were the general strategies to improve the performance of polymeric adsorbents. The maximum adsorption capacities of these polymers toward Cr(VI) fitted by Langmuir isotherm model ranged from 3.2 to 1185 mg/g. Mechanisms of complexation, chelation, reduction, electrostatic attraction, anion exchange, and hydrogen bonding were involved in the Cr(VI) removal. Influence factors on Cr(VI) removal were itemized. Polymeric adsorbents performed much better in the strong acidic pH range (e.g., pH 2.0) and at higher initial Cr(VI) concentrations. The adsorption of Cr(VI) was an endothermic reaction, and higher reaction temperature favored more robust adsorption. Anions inhibited the removal of Cr(VI) through competitive adsorption, while that was barely affected by cations. Factors that affected the regeneration of these adsorbents were summarized. To realize the goal of industrial application and environmental protection, removal of the Cr(VI) accompanied by its detoxication through reduction is highly encouraged. Moreover, development of adsorbents with strong regeneration ability and low cost, which are robust for removing Cr(VI) at trace levels and a wider pH range, should also be an eternally immutable subject in the future. Work done will be helpful for developing more robust polymeric adsorbents and for promoting the treatment of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.
