Abstract:We present the design, fabrication, and characterization of a temperature insensitive lower-index-mode photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam (NB) cavity by overlaying SU-8 cladding. The lower-index-mode is utilized to control the amount of light confined in the SU-8 cladding to compensate for the thermo-optic effect of silicon. The temperature sensitivity of the PhC NB cavity can be tuned by changing the radius of the air holes. The temperature dependence of the PhC NB cavity with SU-8 cladding is demonstrated to be 5.1 pm/degrees C over 50 degrees C temperature range. The measured quality factor of the temperature insensitive lower-index-mode PhC NB cavity is similar to 1 x 10(4). (C) 2015 Optical Society of America
Robust One-Way Modes in Photonic Crystals Without an External Magnetic Field

Abstract:Photonic crystal (PhC) consisting of a square lattice of ferrite rods with remanence in the air is theoretically investigated. It is shown that such a PhC can possess a large band gap with a nontrivial topological property. By interfacing the PhC with different cladding materials, which have (bulk-mode) band gaps with different topological properties, different types of one-way modes that are immune to backscattering are achieved in the absence of an external magnetic field. It is numerically demonstrated that by using such one-way modes, waves can be flexibly and effectively manipulated in PhC systems without almost any power loss.

Abstract:The exploration of parity-time (PT) symmetry in micro-/nano-cavity lasers has recently gained immense research interest. The PT symmetric phase transition to single-mode lasing has been achieved by arranging the spatial distribution of optical gain and loss in single or coupled cavity systems. In terms of photonic crystal (PhC) lasers, a non-uniform pumping scheme is usually employed to enter the PT symmetry-breaking phase in a longitudinal PT symmetric system. Instead, we use a uniform pumping scheme to enable the PT symmetric transition to the desired single lasing mode in line-defect PhC cavities based on a simple design with asymmetric optical loss. The flexible control of gain-loss contrast is realized by removing a few rows of air holes in PhCs. We obtain single-mode lasing with a side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) of around 30 dB without affecting the threshold pump power and linewidth. The output power of the desired mode is six times higher than that in multimode lasing. This simple approach enables single-mode PhC lasers without sacrificing the output power, threshold pump power, and linewidth of a multimode cavity design.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a single-mode double-cavity photonic crystal (PhC) sensor for simultaneous detection of ambient refractive index (RI) and temperature. L3 cavity and L4 cavity are cascaded on both sides of the photonic crystal W1 waveguide. Two 0th-order modes generated by the two cavities with Q-factors over 16,330.80 and 8358.21 are used for sensing, which have a strong constraint on photons than the higher-order modes. By simulating the refractive index and temperature of the PhC structure, the sensing matrix can realize simultaneous sensing of two parameters. The maximum crosstalk of the two cavities is very low and can increase the accuracy of the detection. And the structure shows a good fabrication tolerance considering the deviation of the hole radius. The application of the PhC to dual-parameter sensing with high accuracy is proposed, which provides an idea for dual-parameter sensing.

Abstract:The properties of truly confined modes of a 2D hex horizontal photonic crystal slot slab waveguide are analyzed. Then the dispersion of liner defect waveguide is calculated. In addition, what influence the slots with different height have over the band structure and the group velocity dispersion of the defect mode waveguide are analyzed. Based on these studies, an ultra-compact silicon-based Mach-Zehnder amplitude modulator is proposed. For a design with almost negligible first order chromatic dispersion in an optical bandwidth of 1THz, we predict a modulation bandwidth of 40GHz and a length of about 80 mu m. This is achieved by infiltrating an electro-optic polymer into a slotted photonic crystal waveguide, the strong field confinement in slotted waveguides and the slow light interaction enhancements provided by the photonic crystal waveguide, where group velocity and dispersion may be controlled.

Abstract:We proposed and demonstrated a high sensitivity temperature sensor in an avoided-crossing-based selective-filling photonic crystal fiber (SFPCF) which was designed by selectively filling two symmetrical air holes around the fiber core of an index-guiding PCF with a kind of high index liquid. The avoided-crossing effect caused by the resonant couplings rather than the crossings between the two-high-index-rod modes and the fundamental mode results in unique birefringence characteristics. The temperature response of the modal phase and group birefringence were both calculated in detail. And the phase and group birefringence are highly sensitive to temperature. Then, the transmission characteristics of a Sagnac interferometer (SI) based on the SFPCF were discussed both in theory and in experiments. The experimental results present that the weak mode couplings have no influence on the transmission spectrum of the SFPCF based SI. The interference dips at different wavelengths present distinctive transmission and temperature characteristics. In experiment, the highest temperature sensitivity of −6.9 nm/°C at 36.5°C was achieved.

Abstract:We investigate and simulate the light transmitting and coupling characteristics of surface mode waveguides (SMWs) based on photonic crystals (PhCs) with a triangular lattice of air holes. We demonstrate that surface waves can be efficiently propagated and served as a new kind of high-efficiency single-SMW-based filter with broad bandwidth in the outer space of PhCs. We also explore the highly efficient coupling of hetero-SMWs constructed by cascading different truncated surfaces. The coupling efficiency is insensitive to the interface position. Abstract:We present the design, fabrication and characterization of a high sensitivity temperature sensor based on cascaded silicon photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam cavities. Two PhC nanobeam cavities, one with stack width modulated structure and the other one with parabolic-beam structure are utilized to increase the sensitivity. Most of the light is designed to be confined in the cladding and the core for these two cavities, respectively. Due to the positive thermo-optic (TO) coefficient of silicon and the negative TO coefficient of SU-8 cladding, the wavelength responses red shift for parabolic-beam cavity and blue shift for stack width modulated cavity as the increase of the ambient temperature, respectively. Thus, the sensitivity for the temperature sensor can be improved greatly since the difference in resonant wavelength shifts is detected for the temperature sensing. The experimental results show that the sensitivity of the temperature sensor is about 162.9 pm/degrees C, which is almost twice as high as that of the conventional silicon based resonator sensors. Abstract:A two-core photonic crystal fiber (TC-PCF) based highly-sensitive temperature sensor was proposed and demonstrated. By selectively infiltrating the central airhole with refractive index liquid (RIL), a three-parallel-waveguide structure was formed. A dual-component interference pattern, consisting of a large spectrum envelope and fine interference fringes, was observed in the transmission spectrum. The simulation results confirmed that the interference was arising from a few hybrid supermodes in the fiber coupler structure. They were in good agreement with the experimental observation on the discrete temperature windows with different temperature sensitivities due to couplings between different hybrid supermodes in respective temperature windows. By tracing the wavelength shifts of the large spectrum envelope, high sensitivities were achieved at 42.621 nm /°C in the temperature range from 54.2 °C to 55 °C and 32.159 nm /°C from 51.8 °C to 52.6 °C.

Abstract:We present the design of an ultra-low power consumption tunable photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam cavity. The simulated temperature dependence of the PhC cavity is about 79 pm/K, due to the high thermo-optic coefficient of silicon. And the calculated tuning efficiency of the tunable PhC cavity is 45.8 pm/μW, which is the highest efficiency ever reported.

Abstract:We proposed and fabricated a double-slots photonic crystal waveguides (PCWGs) structure formed by introducing two slots into PCWGs with air-bridge structure on silicon-on-insulator substrate. The mode characteristics of double-slots PCWGs were investigated theoretically and experimentally. The transmission spectra present a sharp and deep dip (22 dB with bandwidth of 6 nm) caused by ministop band in the proposed structure, which is 15 dB deeper than that in the W3 PCWG. Additionally, dependence of the dip on temperature in the double-slots PCWG was measured and a temperature coefficient 0.159 nm/°C can be concluded.

Abstract:We present the design, fabrication, and the characterization of high-Q slotted 1D photonic crystal (PhC) cavities with parabolic-width stack. Their peculiar geometry enables the location of the resonating mode close to the air-band. The majority of optical field distributes in the slotted low-index area and the light matter interaction with the analytes has been enhanced. Cavities with measured Q-factors similar to 10(4) have been demonstrated. The refractive index sensing measurement for NaCl solutions with different concentrations shows a sensitivity around 410. Both the achieved Q-factor and the sensitivity are higher than the one reported recently by using 2D slotted PhC cavities. The total size for the sensing part of the present device is reduced to 16.8 x 2.5 mu m(2). (C)2013 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:We fabricate a simple, compact, and stable temperature sensor based on a liquid-sealed photonic crystal fiber (PCF) in-line nonpolarimetric modal interferometer. Different from other reported PCF devices, it does not need expensive polarimetric devices, and the liquid is sealed in one fiber. The device consists of a stub of isopropanol-filled PCF spliced between standard single-mode fibers. The temperature sensitivity (-166 pm/degrees C) increases over an order of magnitude compared with those of the previous sensors based on air-sealed PCF interferometers built via fusion splicing with the same mechanism. In addition, the refractive index sensitivity also increases. Higher temperature sensitivity can be realized by infiltrating some liquid having a higher thermo-optic coefficient into the microholes of the PCF. (C) 2012 Optical Society of America

Abstract:This article describes a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) temperature sensor that utilizes a flat, metal-coated trapezoidal surface. The PCF is made up of two layers of elliptical air holes and a polished trapezoidal surface that allows temperature sensing. An external sensing approach is used to deposit a thin silver layer on the reflective surface, while a thin SiO2 film acts as an oxidation-resistant coating. The top elliptical air hole serves as the interface for energy transformation from the core-guided mode to the surface plasmon-polariton (SPP) mode. Simulations carried out using the finite element method indicate that the proposed SPR-PCF temperature sensor can achieve a maximum temperature sensitivity and resolution of up to 5200 pm/°C and 0.01923 °C, respectively, across a temperature range of 10 to 60 °C. This research has significant potential for sensor design and real-time temperature remote sensing applications.

Abstract:An optical sensor based on One-Dimensional photonic crystal (1D PhC) stack mode-gap cavity has been designed, fabricated and characterized. By introducing quadratically modulated width tapering structure, a waveguide coupled 1D PhC stack mode-gap cavity with calculated Q-factor 1.74 × 10(7) and an effective mode volume 1.48(λ/n(Si))(3) has been designed. This cavity has been used for sensing applications by immersing into water-ethanol mixture of different volume concentrations. Transmission measurement shows a quality factor as high as 27, 000 can be achieved for the cavity immersed in analytes. A sensitivity of 269nm/RIU has been demonstrated.
Simultaneous Detection of Refractive Index and Temperature Using High-Order Air and Dielectric Modes in a Single Photonic Crystal Nanobeam Cavity

Abstract:A single photonic crystal nanobeam cavity (PCNC) supporting both high-order air and dielectric modes was firstly proposed for on-chip dual-parameter sensing. Due to the different field distributions of the two modes, they have quite different response to ambient refractive index and temperature variations. The geometrical parameters of the PCNC were optimized to achieve a suitable bandgap as well as make the wavelength locate at the commonly used wavelength band. The proposed PCNC shows a refractive index sensitivity of 172.5 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) and a temperature sensitivity of 47.4 pm/K for the air mode, while a refractive index sensitivity of 145.5 nm/RIU and a temperature sensitivity of 54.1 pm/K for the dielectric mode. The footprint of the sensing unit is only 0.8x7.6 mu m(2).

Abstract:A highly sensitive photonic crystal fiber temperature sensor based on Sagnac interferometer with full liquid filling is proposed. All of the air holes in the PCF are filled with temperature-sensitive liquid, the structure is analyzed theoretically and numerically using the finite element method. Since the sensitivity is related to the group birefringent grating, the size of the sensitivity can be reflected by comparing the absolute value of the group birefringent grating. The structure is optimized by modifying the diameter of d0, d1 and d2 of the air holes for the photonic crystal fiber. In the process of numerical calculation, the best parameters are selected by comparing the absolute value of the group birefringent grating near the special wavelength to obtain higher sensitivity. The average sensitivity of 35.14 nm/°C and − 27.71 nm/°C are obtained at 27–32 °C in a parametrically optimized structure and R2 are 0.98455 and 0.9779. The RI sensitivity is also studied as RI changes from 1.404 to 1.409, the average sensitivity are − 53,714 nm/RIU and − 47,714.29 nm/RIU.

Abstract:By selective filling of one of the air holes in the photonic crystal fiber, the fundamental core mode can be effectively coupled to the fundamental mode of the adjacent liquid rod waveguide at the resonant wavelength with extremely high temperature sensitivity. The spectral power of the rod mode can be filtered out by fusion splicing the selectively infiltrated photonic crystal fiber with conventional single-mode fiber, resulting in a sharp dip in the transmission spectrum. Such a device is demonstrated in our experiment by filling standard 1.46 refractive index liquid into one of the air holes of the commercially available photonic crystal fiber by use of femtosecond laser-assisted selective infiltration technique. The average temperature sensitivity achieved is ~54.3 nm/°C.
