Abstract:Wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is a promising architecture for next-generation access networks because of its large bandwidth, protocol transparency and scalability. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, high-speed upstream WDM-PON scheme adopting polarization division multiplexed (PDM) on-off keying (OOK) modulation at the optical network unit (ONU) and digital coherent/self-coherent detection with a novel blind dual-modulus equalization algorithm at the optical line terminal (OLT). As such, the upstream capacity can be directly enhanced at low ONU expenditure, and receiver sensitivity as well as power budget can be also improved. Enabled by the scheme, 40-Gb/s upstream transmission in 80-km WDM-PON is experimentally demonstrated. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The coherent passive optical network (PON) is a cost-effective point-to-multipoint solution to accommodate the ever-increasing traffic demands in the future optical access network. Recently, time and frequency division multiplexing (TFDM) coherent PON have attracted increasing interest, due to its advantages of providing low latency access and flexible bandwidth allocation. One critical challenge for TFDM-PON system is the upstream burst-mode digital signal processing (DSP). DSP should converge fast in the specific time slot to ensure low latency for subcarrier allocation. The conventional subcarrier recognition and demultiplexing are realized in the frequency domain. The process of time-frequency conversion introduces extra computational complexity if the burst-mode DSP use time-domain algorithms. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a data-aided DSP scheme for burst-mode detection in coherent TFDM-PON. Subcarrier demultiplexing is implemented in the time domain by using coarse and fine filtering. Coarse and fine filtering are achieved by convolving the signal with finite impulse response (FIR) pulse-shaping filters. Least square (LS) algorithm is used for channel estimation achieving fast convergence. With a 79.36-ns training sequence, -37.5-dBm and -29-dBm sensitivities are achieved for QPSK and 16QAM signal-based 200G TFDM-PON with four subcarriers after 20-km fiber transmission.

Abstract:Recently, digital signal processing (DSP) methods have attracted a lot of attention for next-generation passive optical network (PON). To achieve high spectrum-efficiency colorless transmission, we combine the time-division-multiplexing (TDM) architecture with advanced DSP methods to propose a DSP-enhanced TDM-PON, in which DSP-based symbols are transmitted in different time slots instead of on-off-key (OOK) bits in conventional TDM-PON. Four DSP methods with frequency-domain equalization (FDE) are discussed in terms of computational complexity, peak-to-average ratio (PAPR), and flexibility. A DSP-based evolution scheme from conventional TDM-PON to DSP-enhanced TDM-PON is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by upgrading the optical line terminal (OLT) to support both OOK and DSP-based signals, which can maintain the current optical distribution network (ODN) and minimize the impact for the existing service and equipment.

Abstract:Recently, digital signal processing (DSP) methods have been extensively studied and various DSP-based schemes have been proposed for next-generation passive optical network (PON). Abstract:We propose an upstream PON transmission scheme based on optical carrier suppression at ONU and heterodyne detection at OLT. Simulation results of 25-Gb/s upstream OFDM-PON show a power budget improvement of 8-dB compared to traditional IM-DD scheme. In addition, it is observed that the scheme does not suffer from dispersion-induced power fading in traditional double sideband (DSB) transmission.

Abstract:Coherent optics has been proved to be a promising candidate for 100 Gb/s and even beyond single-wavelength time-division multiplexing passive optical networks (TDM-PONs). However, one of the key issues in TDM coherent-PON is how to efficiently and robustly achieve upstream burst-mode coherent detection. To solve this problem, we proposed and demonstrated a reliable and efficient preamble design with corresponding burstmode digital signal processing (DSP) for coherent upstream burst-mode detection in TDM coherent-PON. To reduce the preamble length, a special designed preamble unit is used for three burst-mode DSP functions including frame synchronization, state-of-the polarization estimation, and frequency-offset estimation. The efficiency of the designed preamble and the overall performances under different test conditions are experimentally verified. We also confirmed the robust performance in large frequency offset, residual fiber dispersion, and long-time running. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate the coherent upstream burst-mode detection of 100-Gb/s polarization-division-multiplexed quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) signals based on a 71.68-ns preamble and corresponding burst-mode DSP, achieving a 36-dB power budget after 50-km singlemode fiber transmission. Around 20-dB dynamic range of received power is also experimentally verified for burst signals in the 100 Gb/s/lambda TDM coherent-PON. (C) 2020 Optical Society of America

Abstract:As the capacity of the next-generation passive optical network (PON) is reaching 100 Gb/s and beyond, cost-effective transceivers have been widely discussed. In this work, we provide a comprehensive comparison of various simplified coherent and direct detection (DD) schemes operating at a 100 G b / s / λ 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation signal through numerical simulation. According to the cost, the coherent receivers can be divided into three levels: intensity-only coherent receivers and phase-insensitive and phase-sensitive complex-value coherent receivers. The received power sensitivity at back-to-back, influence of laser frequency offset, local oscillator power, laser linewidth, analog-to-digital convertor resolution, fiber dispersion, and hardware complexity are investigated and analyzed for each transceiver structure. The results show the following: (1) Transmitter-side optical amplification is suggested for DD and intensity-only coherent receivers to meet the 29 dB power budget requirement, and these schemes have a large dispersion penalty. (2) Compared with 3 × 3 coupler and 2 × 4 hybrid-based coherent receivers, 2 × 2 coupler and balanced-photodiode-based heterodyne detection exhibit similar performance with a simpler structure. (3) Both phase-insensitive and phase-sensitive complex-value coherent receivers have superior power budget and dispersion tolerance, and their application in PON would depend on the cost.

Abstract:We introduce digital coherent superposition (DCS) into optical access network and propose a DCS-OFDM-PON upstream transmission scheme using intensity modulator and collective self-coherent detection. The generated OFDM signal is real based on Hermitian symmetry, which can be used to estimate the common phase error (CPE) by complex conjugate subcarrier pairs without any pilots. In simulation, we transmit an aggregated 40 Gb/s optical OFDM signal from two ONUs. The transmission performance with DCS is slightly better after 25 km transmission without relative transmission time delay. The fiber distance for different ONUs to RN are not same in general and there is relative transmission time delay between ONUs, which causes inter-carrier-interference (ICI) power increasing and degrades the transmission performance. The DCS can mitigate the ICI power and the DCS-OFDM-PON upstream transmission outperforms the conventional OFDM-PON. The CPE estimation is by using two pairs of complex conjugate subcarriers without redundancy. The power variation can be 9 dB in DCS-OFDM-PON, which is enough to tolerate several kilometers fiber length difference between the ONUs. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Abstract:<p>Optical access networks have been evolving to meet the explosive growth of data traffic. It is foreseeable that the 100Gb/s/λ and beyond passive optical network (PON) will be required in future optical access networks. Coherent optical communication is a promising solution for the future beyond 100G PON. However, the traditional digital signal processing (DSP) for coherent optical communication is difficult to realize fast convergence due to blind and complex algorithms. In this paper, we design a specific preamble structure and propose a burst-mode DSP to achieve fast convergence for the coherent PON. For verifying the feasibility of the proposed scheme, point-to-multi-point (P2MP) coherent PON is experimentally built up based on digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM), which is a kind of frequency division multiple access. When the allocated frequency of the optical network unit is suddenly changed, the DSP should converge fast to ensure a low handoff latency. In P2MP coherent PON, the proposed specific preamble structure and burst-mode DSP jointly implement the fast convergence using a short preamble with only 416 symbols. The experimental results show that the 8-Gbaud/SC×8-SCs 400Gb/s-net-rate coherent PON in burst-mode detection achieves the receiver sensitivity of approximately −27dBm at the 20% soft-decision forward error correction limit and approximately 35.5dB optical power budget with an optical pre-amplifier.</p>

Abstract:In this letter, a WDM-OFDM-PON architecture using LDPC code is brought up to increase transmission range and system performance. In optical line terminal (OLT), LDPC-coded OFDM signal at 10-Gb/s is transmitted as downstream. At each optical network unit (ONU), the optical OFDM signal is demodulated with direct detection, and on-off keying date at 2.5-Gb/s is returned as upstream. Simulation results show that the transmission distance could exceed 20-km with negligible penalty.

Abstract:We introduce an "ultra-dense" concept into next-generation WDM-PON systems, which transmits a Nyquist-WDM uplink with centralized uplink optical carriers and digital coherent detection for the future access network requiring both high capacity and high spectral efficiency. 80-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission of Nyquist-WDM signal with 13 coherent 25-GHz spaced wavelength shaped optical carriers individually carrying 100-Gbit/s polarization-multiplexing quadrature phase-shift keying (PM-QPSK) upstream data has been experimentally demonstrated with negligible transmission penalty. The 13 frequency-locked wavelengths with a uniform optical power level of -10 dBm and OSNR of more than 50 dB are generated from a single lightwave via a multi-carrier generator consists of an optical phase modulator (PM), a Mach-Zehnder modulator (MZM), and a WSS. Following spacing the carriers at the baud rate, sub-carriers are individually spectral shaped to form Nyquist-WDM. The Nyquist-WDM channels have less than 1-dB crosstalk penalty of optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) at 2 × 10(-3) bit-error rate (BER). Performance of a traditional coherent optical OFDM scheme and its restrictions on symbol synchronization and power difference are also experimentally compared and studied.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate and investigate high-speed passive optical networks (PON) in the O-band without using any digital signal processing (DSP) at the ONU side, meanwhile still adopting cost-effective low-bandwidth optics. We show that with commercial 10G-class optics including DML and PIN-TIA, 50Gb/s PAM4 PON with a power budget up to 29dB is achieved under the HD-FEC BER limit. We present the detailed design procedure of the DSP including the downlink Nyquist pulse shaping and pre-equalization and uplink post-equalization, and conduct a comprehensive study on this system including DSP complexity, DAC/ADC sampling rate requirement and tolerance to the response diversity of ONU receivers. We conclude that, 1) 55 and 35 taps are sufficient for downlink and uplink digital filters to approach the BER floor; 2) the minimum required DAC and ADC sampling rate are respectively 33.75GS/s and 32GS/s to achieve the optimal performance; and 3) with 1dB sensitivity penalty at the HD-FEC BER limit, the allowable response diversity of ONU receivers can be from -2.2dB/10GHz to 1.8dB/10GHz. Furthermore, we explore and demonstrate the suitable data rate based on on-off keying and duobinary modulation formats in this system and present corresponding results.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a new structure of PON system based on coherent heterodyne receivers. The coherent detection enables a filterless ultra-dense WDM system. We simulated a 64 channel system with 10GHz channel spacing, offering symmetrical 1 Gbit/s sustained data rate per user both downlink and uplink by single fiber. The quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) modulation format is applied to downstream data for higher spectrum efficiency, while we use Amplitude Modulation (AM) on upstream data to reduce the system cost. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, a symmetric 100-Gb/s DSP-enhanced TWDM-PON architecture with four pairs of wavelengths is proposed. 4×25-Gb/s TWDM-OFDM-PON is experimentally demonstrated over 26.7 km fiber using double sideband (DSB) modulation.
