Abstract:With the ever-increasing bandwidth demand of the end-customers, the 100-Gb/s access solution has attracted more and more attention. In this letter, we propose a symmetric 100-Gb/s digital signal processing-enhanced time wavelength division multiplexed passive optical networ (TWDM-PON) architecture with four pairs of wavelengths. A 4 x 25-Gb/s TWDM-PON is experimentally demonstrated over a 26.7-km fiber using double sideband (DSB) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. The reflective semiconductor optical amplifier is deployed in the optical network unit (ONU) to enhance the receiver sensitivity of downstream OFDM signals, and DSB single-carrier frequency domain equalization modulation is used for upstream transmission to reduce the complexity and cost of the ONU.

Abstract:Recently, digital signal processing (DSP) methods have been extensively studied and various DSP-based schemes have been proposed for next-generation passive optical network (PON). In this paper, we combine the time-division-multiplexing (TDM) architecture with advanced DSP methods to achieve high spectrum-efficiency colorless transmission. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), as the original form of various DSP methods with frequency-domain equalization (FDE), is chosen for both upstream and downstream transmissions. In the TDM-PON based on OFDM (TDM-OFDM-PON) architecture, OFDM symbols are transmitted in different time slots instead of on-off-key (OOK) bits in conventional TDM-PON. This architecture can be extended for single-carrier with FDE easily. Due to the same TDMA scheme, it can achieve maximum compatibility with current TDM-PON. A DSP-based evolution scheme from conventional TDM-PON to TDM-OFDM-PON is proposed and experimentally demonstrated by upgrading the optical line terminal (OLT) to support both OOK and OFDM signals, which can maintain the current optical distribution network (ODN) and minimize the impact for the existing service and equipment.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose to use a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) in the optical network unit (ONU) to improve the loss budget in time and wavelength division multiplexed-passive optical network (TWDM-PON) systems. The SOA boosts the upstream signal to increase the output power of the electro-absorption modulated laser (EML) and simultaneously pre-amplifies the downstream signal for sensitivity improvement. The penalty caused by cross gain modulation (XGM) effect is negligible due to the low extinction ratio (ER) of upstream signal and the large wavelength difference between upstream and downstream links. In order to achieve a higher output power, the SOA is driven into its saturation region, where the self-phase modulation (SPM) effect converts the intensity into phase information and realizes on-off-keying (OOK) to phase-shifted-keying (PSK) format conversion. In this way, the pattern effect is eliminated, which releases the requirement of gain-clamping on SOA. To further improve the loss budget of upstream link, an Erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is used in the optical line terminal (OLT) to pre-amplify the received signal. For the downstream direction, directly modulated laser (DML) is used as the laser source. Taking advantage of its carrier-less characteristic, directly modulated signal shows high tolerance to fiber nonlinearity, which could support a downstream launch power as high as + 16 dBm per channel. In addition, the signal is pre-amplified by the SOA in ONU before being detected, so the sensitivity limitation for downstream link is also removed. As a result, a truly passive symmetric 40-Gb/s TWDM-PON was demonstrated, achieving a link loss budget of 51 dB.

Abstract:A novel 25-GHz-spaced dense wavelength-division multiplexing passive optical network (DWDM-PON) is proposed to improve the utilization of wavelength resource and mitigate the Rayleigh backscattering (RB) and back-reflection effects. A colorless optical network unit (ONU) is realized by remodulating the downstream (DS) signal via a gain-saturated reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA). Due to the simple interconnecting architecture at the remote node (RN), the DS and upstream (US) signals in each feed fiber (FF) are carried on different channels. Therefore, the RB and back-reflection effects are significantly reduced. The feasibility and merits of the proposed system are experimentally demonstrated with the error-free transmission of 10-Gb/s DS and 1.25-Gb/s US signals over a 25-km single-mode fiber.

Abstract:In this letter, for the first time, a novel 100G pre-amplified self-coherent passive optical network (SC-PON) architecture is proposed and experimentally verified. To mitigate the reduction in receiver sensitivity resulting from co-transmitted carriers in self-coherent systems, a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) was deployed for pre-amplification with a noise figure of 7.5dB and a small-signal gain of 30dB. As a proof-of-concept, a system experiment of pre-amplified 25-GBaud 16-QAM SC-PON is demonstrated in the downstream, achieving a data rate of 100 Gb/s/ over 20-km single-mode fiber (SMF) with a receiver sensitivity of -22dBm. We achieve a power budget beyond 33.6 dB under the 15% SD-FEC threshold of , surpassing the power budget specified by ITU-T class N1 and IEEE class PR(X). The results indicate that the proposed SC-PON has the potential applicability for next-generation beyond 100G access systems.

Abstract:We propose a long reach double-side band (DSB) time-division-multiplexing PON architecture based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDM-OFDM-PON). To avoid severe power fading induced by chromatic dispersion for DSB long reach transmission, we adopt higher-order modulation and small guard-band between carrier and signal band. 20-Gb/s upstream long-reach DSB TDM-OFDM-PON transmission is experimentally demonstrated over 100-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), enabled by 64-QAM OFDM modulation and 0.85-GHz carrier-to-signal guard-band.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the downstream transmission of a 100 Gb/s/lambda time division multiplexed passive optical network (TDM-PON) based on four-level pulsed amplitude modulation (PAM-4) in the O-band using 10 Gbps transmitters with semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver. Considering the soft-decision FEC (SD-FEC) threshold (1 x 10(-2)), power budget of 30.3 dB and 29.3 dB have been achieved after 22 km and 50 km fiber transmission, respectively. There is no observable dispersion penalty after 22 km and 50 km transmission. The possibility of 100 Gb/s/lambda PON is first investigated using intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) schemes rather than coherent detection schemes.

Abstract:The coherent passive optical network (PON) is a cost-effective point-to-multipoint solution to accommodate the ever-increasing traffic demands in the future optical access network. Recently, time and frequency division multiplexing (TFDM) coherent PON have attracted increasing interest, due to its advantages of providing low latency access and flexible bandwidth allocation. One critical challenge for TFDM-PON system is the upstream burst-mode digital signal processing (DSP). DSP should converge fast in the specific time slot to ensure low latency for subcarrier allocation. The conventional subcarrier recognition and demultiplexing are realized in the frequency domain. The process of time-frequency conversion introduces extra computational complexity if the burst-mode DSP use time-domain algorithms. In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a data-aided DSP scheme for burst-mode detection in coherent TFDM-PON. Subcarrier demultiplexing is implemented in the time domain by using coarse and fine filtering. Coarse and fine filtering are achieved by convolving the signal with finite impulse response (FIR) pulse-shaping filters. Least square (LS) algorithm is used for channel estimation achieving fast convergence. With a 79.36-ns training sequence, -37.5-dBm and -29-dBm sensitivities are achieved for QPSK and 16QAM signal-based 200G TFDM-PON with four subcarriers after 20-km fiber transmission.

Abstract:We propose a polarization division multiplexing (PDM) WDM-PON architecture based on intensity modulation and coherent detection. Single carrier frequency domain equalization (SCFDE) technique is used to effectively combat the linear distortion. And 2×2 multiple inputs multiple outputs (MIMO) algorithm is used to remove the crosstalk between the two orthogonal polarizations. 20-Gb/s PDM-BPSK transmission over 50-km SSMF is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:Time and frequency division multiplexing (TFDM) coherent passive optical networks (PONs) are considered as a promising candidate for future optical access networks due to the advantage of high sensitivity, high spectral efficiency, and flexibility. We propose a novel, to our knowledge, bidirectional TFDM 200-Gb/s coherent PON architecture based on the digital subcarrier multiplexing (DSCM) technology. A polarization-insensitive simplified coherent receiver is achieved at the ONU side by Alamouti coding and heterodyne detection. We experimentally demonstrate this bidirectional coherent PON with a 50-Gbaud Alamouti 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signal transmitted downstream and a 25-Gbaud dual polarization (DP)-16QAM signal transmitted upstream. By using a single sideband modulated transmitter, only one laser source is required at the optical network unit (ONU) side. The power budgets can reach 30 and 33 dB for the downstream and upstream, respectively, after the 20-km transmission over a standard single-mode fiber (SSMF).
