Abstract:A method for measuring a distributed external pressure field along an optic fiber is discussed, which is based on the principle of mode-coupling of polarization-maintaining fiber and optical path compensation in the interference of two beams from a broadband light source. A modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer is used to process the optical signal representing the distributed pressure information, and a polarization light heterodyne detecting technique is used to improve the signal-to-noise ratio and to eliminate the influences of light source fluctuation and background light. For the automatic measurement of the distributed pressure information, an A/D and interface circuit is designed. Under the control of the microcomputer, the arm of the interferometer with an optical path scanning setup scans a distance corresponding to the length of the fiber, then the information of the pressure field is obtained. The experimental results have shown that the measuring system has a high measurement accuracy and a rather large pressure measuring range (10 g/mm - 500 g/mm).

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate a high pressure sensor based on a polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PMPCF) with Sagnac loop configuration for downhole application. The pressure sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 4.21 nm/MPa and 3.27 nm/MPa at ~1320 nm and ~1550 nm respectively. High pressure measurement up to 20 MPa has been achieved in our experiment. The sensor also shows reduced temperature sensitivity, making it an ideal candidate for pressure sensing in harsh environment.

Abstract:A novel intrinsic fiber optic pressure sensor realized with a polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) based Sagnac interferometer is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. A large wavelength-pressure coefficient of 3.42 nm/MPa was measured using a 58.4 cm long PM-PCF as the sensing element. Owing to the inherently low bending loss and thermal dependence of the PM-PCF, the proposed pressure sensor is very compact and exhibits low temperature sensitivity. Abstract:A high-sensitivity and fast distributed optical fiber pressure sensor based on optical frequency-agile phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (φ-OTDR) technique is proposed, and the standard single-mode fiber (SMF) is used as sensing fiber to demonstrate its pressure sensing performance. Two electro-optic modulators (EOMs) are connected in series in the same optical path and modulated by an arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) to generate a set of frequency agile pulses. The duration of single frequency pulse is 250 ns, and the interval between the two sets of frequency-agile pulses sequence is 5 μs. The injection locking technique is used to filter and amplify the frequency-agile pulses with a higher extinction ratio, and make the peak power of the frequency-agile pulses more stable. The measurement results show that in the pressure range of 0 to 1.8 MPa, and the pressure sensitivity of Rayleigh scattering spectrum frequency shift difference of the standard SMF is 702.5 MHz/MPa, which is about 1000 times that of the standard SMF based on BOTDA method. With an average of 64 times, the single pressure measurement time is only 1.92 ms.
A Novel High-Sensitivity Fiber Grating Sensor for Simultaneous Measurement of Temperature and Pressure

Abstract:A novel sensor based on a single fiber Bragg grating is described.The sensor is configured by encapsulating half of a fiber Bragg grating in a polymer filled metal cylinder and fixing the other half to the metal cylinder.The fixed part of the fiber Bragg grating is immune to the strain while the other part is sensitive to both the strain and the temperature,therefore the novel structure can realize the separate sense of strain and temperature.Using a novel tactic to transfer the applied pressure to the axial extended-strain on the fiber Bragg grating,the pressure sensitivity can be greatly improved.The results show that this novel sensor can simultaneously measure pressure and temperature,meanwhile the pressure sensitivity reaches to 9.65×10-3MPa-1,which is about 4770 times larger than that of the bare fiber Bragg grating.

Abstract:In this study, a new type of structure of optical fiber pressure sensor (OFPS) based on polarization modulation is proposed, which selects a high-birefringence fiber (HBF) as the sensing unit to measure the pressure in the fluid medium. The PM-1550-01 fiber produced by NTK Photonics Inc. is evaluated as the sample in our subject. Firstly, the regularities of birefringence variation on the PM-1550-01 followed by the external pressure load and the ambient temperature are analyzed by the finite element method (FEM). The results show that the pressure sensitivity is 2.05 x 10(-6) RIU/MPa in the pressure range of 0-100 MPa, and the temperature sensitivity is 7.27 x 10(-)(10) RIU/degrees C in the temperature range of 0-100 degrees C. Thus, the pressure-temperature cross-sensitivity is only 0.355 kPa/degrees C in theory. Secondly, the expression of the output light intensity of the introduced OFPS is deduced based on the principles of polarization interference and phase modulation. Combined with simulation results, the measurement ranges of the sensor can be set and adjusted by the length of the sensing unit. Finally, the proposed OFPS is fabricated and external pressure tests within the range of 0-50 MPa are completed. The results show that the pressure sensitivity is approximately 0.145 dB/MPa in the pressure range of 0-44 MPa. There is a fine consistency between the experimental data and simulation results. In addition, the proposed OFPS has many other advantages, such as small size, simple fabrication process and large measurement range, which make it appropriate to be applied in high-pressure measurement in hostile conditions, e.g., downhole and ocean-bottom.
Novel pressure sensor based on distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser

Abstract:We suppose a novel pressure sensor based on the polarization characteristic of fiber, which uses a distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser as the sensing element. Using full-vector finite-element method, we computed the transmit mode and double refraction coefficient of two mutual polarized beam in cavity of the laser varying with different pressure. Accordingly, we deduced the frequency difference transformation with pressure. Within the pressure range of 0-4000 KN, the relation frequency difference with pressure is linear and its linearity reaches 100%. Owing to the excellent characteristic of fiber, the sensor has a wider measurement range, and higher stability and interference resistance. In addition, owing to the characteristic of fiber Bragg grating, using beat frequency and wavelength double parameter coding mode, the sensor could measure multi-parameter simultaneously.

Abstract:Microstructured optical fiber based distributed pressure sensor is proposed and demonstrated for high resolution manometry (HRM), which adopts the hybrid wavelength and frequency division multiplexing architecture, and hyperelastic packaging. The microstructure acting as a sensing element is composed of two identical and closely spaced ultrashort fiber Bragg gratings with the reflectivity of only 1%. In theory, 243 microstructures can be multiplexed along one single fiber with an interval of 10 mm beneficial from the compact structure, hybrid encoding feature, and low insertion loss. Homogeneous elastic packaging is explored to protect the fiber and greatly enhance the lateral pressure sensitivity of the sensor. Moreover, a mechanical model is established through the finite element method to analyze the sensitizing effect of the packaging. A prototype system is built and experimentally demonstrated the distributed pressure measurementwith the spatial resolution of 10 mm and the pressure sensitivity up to 2.2 Nm/mPa. Due to the advantage of high spatial resolution, high multiplexing capacity, and high pressure sensitivity, the proposed sensor is suitable for HRM in medical application.

Abstract:An optical fiber pressure sensor was designed,fabricated and characterized.It employed a Fabry-Perot (F-P) interferometer and simple intensity-demodulation technology.A square silicon cup processed by anisotropic etching serves as sensitive element for the better consistency than that of circular diaphragm.A large area ratio of the moving mirror to the stationary one is introduced to reduce the nonlinearity due to the non-planarity of the deflection.Reference light generated from a 2×2 optical fiber coupler is used to decrease the influence of intensity variations of the light source.Single-value measurement was achieved under the pressure range from 0 to 38 kPa.The experimental results demonstrate an upmost relative sensitivity of 0.7%/kPa and a reasonable repeatability,consisting well with the theoretical analysis and simulation.A new method of multi-wave or multi-sensor is presented to expand the measurement range with high sensitivity.

Abstract:A mono-fiber optic pressure sensor aimed to reduce the size of sensors is designed. A single optic fiber is used to replace the traditional optic fiber bundle, and to collect the light reflected by an elastic spherical diaphragm, which is part of the light emitted out by itself. The single optic fiber works as emitting light fiber as well as receiving light fiber. The diaphragm coils when force is performed upon, and light intensity received by the fiber changes depending on the deformation of the elastic spherical diaphragm. The relationship between sensitivities of the sensor and the distance from the terminal of fiber to the initial diaphragm before force performed upon are researched experimentally. According to the analysis of virtual light spot, light distributing theory is modified, and it makes the consequence of calculations fit the results of experiment well. The sensor with the unique structure can not only minish the size of sensor but also solve the un-detecting-area problem of multi-fiber optic sensors.
New Optically Powered Pressure Sensor with Optical Fiber Link

Abstract:An optically powered sensor for measuring pressure which linked by optical fiber is developed in a new scheme. Its pulse position modulation (PPM) optical signal and optical supply power for electronics in probe are transmitted to and fro via a single optical fiber. The optical power is carried by a laser diode (LD) source with 1300 nm wavelength and the sensing data are carried by LED 850 nm source. The remote probe uses all CMOS chips and particular modulations (PPM and PWM). Its electrical consumption including signal manipulation and LED driven current from optical conversion is less than 100 (mu) W. The laser diode supplies 5 mW of optical power into the fiber. An advanced photodetector converts sufficiently the section of this power into electrical power to drive the whole probe operation. The optically powered distance gets up to 500 m. The novel sensor combines advanced optical fiber and electronics technology into a system. It continuously measures pressure in real time. Because of using the principle of ratio measurement between mesurand and reference signals, as well as light feedback for light source stability, the system is available with high reliability, outstanding accuracy, and repeatability.
Dynamic Distributed Brillouin Optical Fiber Pressure Sensor

Abstract:A dynamic distributed Brillouin optical fiber pressure sensor based on frequency agility technology is proposed, and the performance of dynamic and static pressure sensing is experimentally demonstrated. A set of frequency-agile pump pulse sequences with single pulse duration of 250 ns are generated by an arbitrary waveform generator. The interval of the frequency sweep pulse sequence is 30 μs, the maximum repetition frequency is 18.2 kHz, and the average is 64 times. Double-coated single-mode fiber (SMF) is used as the sensing fiber to enhance the pressure sensitivity of Brillouin frequency shift (BFS), which the outer coating diameter is 3000 μm. The BFS pressure sensitivity of -3.32 MHz/MPa is achieved in the pressure range of 0-24 MPa, which is about 4.5 times that of SMF. The measurement time of the proposed optical fiber pressure sensing system is only 3.52 ms. Furthermore, the dynamic pressure measurement experiment is carried out, and the continuous measurement of the dynamic range of 6-0 MPa is achieved, and the dynamic distributed pressure measurement ability of the sensing system is verified.

Abstract:A fiber-optic extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (EFPI) and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) based pressure sensor system is designed. Using polyimide coated optical fiber, this sensor works in harsh environment of high temperature and high pressure such as oilfield application with the advantages of high sensitivity, quick response and good reliability. Experiments show the sensor system has a pressure accuracy of 0.05MPa over a range of 0.1MPa to 60MPa at room temperature and in the mixed environment of high temperature and high pressure, the pressure accuracy gets to 0.07MPa under the experimental condition.

Abstract:The measuring principle of low pressure sensors based on fiber optical Fabry-Perot interference and intensity is described.An EFPI pressure sensor and a pure quartz membrane mainly compose the low pressure measuring sensor probe.According to the design of the quartz membrane,a low pressure measurement sensor with a range of 0～0.15 MPa was achieved.Under measurements of the Fabry-Perot interferometric/intensity modulated single-mode fiber sensing system,a minimum pressure resolution of 50Pa and an accuracy of 0.1% were obtained over the full pressure measurement range.

Abstract:A high accuracy interferosetric fiber-optic pressure sensor is disclosed in this paper. The var-ying pressure-induced displacement is measured by a micro-interferometer installed in the sensing probe of this sensor. The adoption of a tong 0.6328gm single-mode fiber enables the coherent laser beam to be transmitted into the sensing probe and the varying interferosetric light beam to be out-transmitted to the opto-electronic receiver which say be located faraway from the sensing probe. This sensor is,therefore, suitable for the pressure measurements in hazardous environment where electromagnetic interference, poisonous gases, etc. are involved. The measuring accuracy of this sensor is 0.5% of the pressure changes being measured, The dynamic range varies from 3Pa to 125 KPa.

Abstract:Silica fiber under high pressure increases the risk of fiber breakage or permanent deformation, which may cause sensor failure due to mechanical strength limitations. High pressure can also induce birefringence in optical fiber. In this study, we present a simple design and low-cost high pressure sensor using polymer optical fiber (POF) based on the intensity-variation technique. A side-coupling mechanism in the sensor structure is adopted, which varies the intensity with applied pressure. Two POFs are twisted together to create a sensing region where the light is launched in the first fiber and measurement is taken from the second fiber. In sensing phenomena, cladding mode frustrated total internal reflection occurs when pressure increases. Silicone gel is used in the pressure chamber for sealing and preventing leakage. The sensor structure is able to detect high pressure in the MPa range, where we tested up to 4 MPa. For higher sensitivity, twisted and bend structure is analyzed, and sensitivity is achieved at about 432.21 nW/MPa. However, twisted helical structure is adopted to enhance sensing range which is about 50 cm. The proposed high-pressure sensor structure is easier to fabricate and has high stability because it doesn't require any destructive method as compared to other conventional methods.
