Abstract:We demonstrate spectral broadening in tapered optical fibres embedded in silica aerogel. The aerogel provides protection to the taper without noticeably affecting the refractive and dispersive properties or power handling.

Abstract:Silica aerogel is a very light and highly porous form of silica glass, with densities and refractive indices much lower than those of ordinary solids. We describe optical interactions with aerogel surrounding tapered fibres or inside the holes of photonic crystal fibres. This enables a new class of fibre devices exploiting the properties of the aerogel as a rigid yet porous replacement for air, as a nonlinear medium and as a host for dopants. Examples include a stable package for fused couplers, a gas sensor and a nonlinear light source.
Gradient All-Nanostructured Aerogel Fibers for Enhanced Thermal Insulation and Mechanical Properties

Abstract:Lightweight, nanoporous aerogel fibers are crucial for personal thermal management and specialized heat protection. However, wet-spinning methods, exemplified by aramid aerogels, inevitably form a dense outer layer, significantly reducing the volume fraction of efficient thermal barrier nanovoids and limiting the development of ultimate thermal resistance in fibers. Herein, we develop a microfluidic spinning method to prepare gradient all-nanostructure aramid aerogel fibers (GAFs). Benefiting from the simultaneous shear alignment and diffusion dilution of a good solvent within the channels, the precursor gel fibers assemble into a structure with a sparse exterior and dense interior, which reverses during supercritical drying to form sheath and core layers with average pore diameters of 150 nm and 600 nm, respectively. Experiments and simulations reveal that the gradient nanostructure creates high interfacial thermal resistance at heat transfer interfaces, resulting in a GAF radial thermal conductivity as low as 0.0228 W m–1 K–1, far below that of air and wet-spun aerogel fibers. Moreover, GAF's unique nano-entangled network efficiently dissipates stress, achieving exceptionally high tensile strength (29.5 MPa) and fracture strain (39.2%). This work establishes a correlation between multiscale nanostructures and superlative performance, thereby expanding the scope of aerogel applications in intricate environments.

Abstract:Nanofibres, optical fibres narrower than the wavelength of light, degrade in hours on exposure to air. We show that encapsulation in hydrophobic silica aerogel (refractive index 1.05) provides protection and stability (over 2 months) without sacrificing low attenuation, strong confinement and accessible evanescent field. The measured attenuation was <0.03 dB/mm, over 10 × lower than reported with other encapsulants. This enables many nanofibre applications based on their extreme small size and strong external evanescent field, such as optical sensors, nonlinear optics, nanofibre circuits and high-Q resonators. The aerogel is more than a waterproof box, it is a completely-compatible gas-permeable material in intimate contact with the nanofibre and hydrophobic on both the macroscopic and molecular scales. Its benefits are illustrated by experiments on gas sensing (exploiting the aerogel's porosity) and supercontinuum generation (exploiting its ultra-low index).

Abstract:Aerogel fibers are produced by integrating aerogel nanonetworks with structures possessing large aspect ratios, which provide enhanced thermal insulation, noise attenuation, and pollutant adsorption properties compared to those of bulk aerogels. The conventional method for fabricating aerogel fibers, which involves dynamic spinning, depends on the swift solidification of gels within a coagulation bath. This process inevitably affects the gel's internal three-dimensional network structure after it has assumed a formed state, posing substantial difficulties in regulating the pore structure and mechanical strength of the aerogel fibers. In this research, we present a novel technique for the fabrication of poly(methylsilsesquioxane) aerogel short fibers (PAFs), utilizing an ice template-based static molding process. Directional ice crystals act as "hard templates" to form prismatic structures within the wet gel matrix, whereas the electrostatic repulsion from the "soft template," cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), safeguards the fiber structure during its formation. Furthermore, the internal pore structure of the aerogel can be precisely controlled by modulating the aggregation states of CTAB micelles in water, which offers diverse reaction sites for silane hydrolysis. The fibers fabricated using this method exhibit large aspect ratios, low density, high specific surface area, and flexibility, displaying excellent insulation properties, stability at high and low temperatures, and hydrophobicity. They are suitable for use as functional fillers in high-performance wearable fabrics.

Abstract:Silica aerogel, renowned for its low thermal conductivity and high optical transparency, is widely used as a transparent insulating material. However, its inherent fragility significantly hinders its practical performance. In this study, a type of nanofibrous silica aerogel is investigated to strengthen the mechanical properties and achieve improved optical transparency. The fibrous microstructure of aerogel is numerically reproduced by the Voronoi Tessellation algorithm. Its radiative properties are analyzed through a combination of the discrete dipoles approximation (DDA) and the Monte Carlo (MC) method, examining the influence of frame structure, fiber radius, porosity, and thickness. Findings indicate that aerogels with fiber radius under 1 nm, over 95% porosity, and thickness below 1 cm fulfill the criteria for light transmission and haze necessary for energy-efficient windows. Energy simulations of fibrous aerogel windows across various Chinese climates suggested up to 45% of energy savings compared to traditional single-pane windows. Furthermore, the study assessed the economic and environmental advantages of aerogel windows throughout their life cycle, offering valuable insights for sustainable building design.

Abstract:A new ambient-dried silica aerogel nanocomposites reinforced by smaller diameter microglass fiber mat were synthesized. Effects of gel treatment and drying temperature, molar ratio of modification agent and volume content of microglass fiber on the composites’ structure and properties were investigated. Increasing the gel treatment temperature with a gradient multi-segment drying process, the aerogel density and volume shrinkage decreased rapidly. Homogeneous and translucent bulk aerogel could be obtained with the density of 0.129 g/cm3, specific surface area of 731.76 m2/g and average pore size of 20 nm. Fewer cracks, more silica matrix and stronger fiber/silica interface, which significantly improves the mechanical performance of the nanocomposites with a high bending strength of 1.4 MPa. The thermal conductivity of the ambient-dried nanocomposites decreased and the bending strength increased with increasing fibers’ volume content. The retrieved nanocomposites is an excellent thermal insulation material with lower thermal conductivity (0.022 W/m K, 650 °C) and high mechanical performance.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:We report a novel method to synthesize silica aerogel composite by fibers using low cost sodium silicate as precursors, ceramics fibers as reinforced skeleton (15wt %), via ambient pressure drying process. To minimize shrinkage during drying, surfaces of wet silica aerogel were modified using trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) via one-step solvent exchange and surface modification. Composite SiO2 aerogels exhibited stable hydrophobic (contact angel about ~135° in room temperature), low density (0.196 g/cm3), high specific surface area (630 m2/g) and large pore volume (2.6cm3/g). Thermal conductivities at desired temperatures were analyzed by transient plane heat source method. Thermal conductivity coefficients of composite aerogel monoliths changed from 0.0266 to 0.0572 W/(m·K) as temperature increased to 400°C, revealed an excellent heat insulation effect during thermal process. Our work will be helpful to provide a general guide on how to commercial exploitation composite aerogel monoliths, which possessing 7.2cm diameters and have desirable structure and properties using in heat insulation environment.

Abstract:The Applications of silica aerogel are limited due to its brittleness and low strength. As a result, it is essential to strengthen and toughen it. Organic nanofibers are one of the preferred reinforcement materials. In this work, we designed and fabricated flexible and compressible nanostructure-assembled aramid nanofiber/silica composites aerogel (ANF/SiO2 aerogel) to improve the mechanical strength and flexibility of silica aerogel without compromising thermal insulation properties. The aramid nanofiber/silica composite aerogels were prepared by immersing the aramid nanofiber wet gel into the silica sol for a certain period of time followed by freeze drying without solvent replacement. The surface modifier 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES) was used as a coupling agent to form chemical linkage between the ANF fiber and silica gel. It was observed that APTES can effectively drive the silica sol to infuse into ANF hydrogel, promoting the assembly of silica gel onto the fiber surface and a uniform distribution in the network of ANF. The compressive resilience, thermal stability, and thermal insulation properties of the composite aerogels were evaluated by inducing the silica aerogel into the ANF network to form a protective layer on the fiber and change the pore structure in the ANF network.

Abstract:Aerogel is a kind of high-performance lightweight open-porous solids with ultralow density, high specific surface area, and broad application in many emerging fields including biotechnology, energy, environment, aerospace, etc. A giant challenge remains in preventing of the hydrophilic aerogel framework shrinkage when replacing of solvent with air in its extremely abundant nanosized pores during its fabrication process in ambient conditions. In this work, started from a linear polymeric precursor with further condensation reaction, superhydrophilic silica aerogels with self-reinforced microstructure and the least volume shrinkage have been successfully obtained via ambient pressure drying process without use of any additives in the presence of a low surface tension solvent. The resulting superhydrophilic silica aerogels possess specific surface area up to 1065 m2/g, pore volume up to 2.17 cm3/g and density down to 84 mg/cm3, and these values are comparable to those of their counterparts obtained by supercritical CO2 drying process. Moreover, as an application demonstration, the bioinspired hydrogels with desirable mechanical flexibility and adhesive performance at extremely harsh environment (e.g., below −50 °C) have been successfully synthesized by mimicking carrier of a functional bioagent with the resulting superhydrophilic silica aerogel microparticles. Abstract:Aerogels are highly porous structures produced by replacing the liquid solvent of a gel with air without causing the collapse of the solid network. Recently, 1D polymer nanofibers have been widely researched as building blocks to develop a new species of 3D fibrous aerogels with a physically entangled and/or chemically crosslinked fibrous network. 3D fibrous aerogels not only hold intrinsic aerogel properties such as an open-cell pore structure, low density, high specific surface area, and large porosity, but also benefit from the inherent features of polymer nanofibers including excellent mechanical flexibility and toughness, a wide range of material selection, and additional functionality. In this review, recent research progress in the fabrication and application of 3D fibrous aerogels is systematically summarized. Relevant strategies for constructing 3D fibrous aerogels, including electrospinning, solution blow spinning, freeze-drying, thermally induced self-agglomeration, and carbonization, are presented. Typical applications in energy ( e.g. , pressure sensors, triboelectric nanogenerators, electromagnetic interference shielding, etc. ) and the environment ( e.g. , air filtration, thermal insulation, interfacial solar vapor generation, etc. ) are highlighted. Finally, challenges in the fabrication of 3D fibrous aerogels, limitations for their use, and trends for future developments are discussed.

Abstract:Aerogel fibers, the simultaneous embodiment of aerogel 3D network and fibrous geometry, have shown great advantages over natural and synthetic fibers in thermal insulation. However, as a fast gelation to ensure aerogel fiber spinning generally induces rapid local clustering of precursor particles (i.e., phase separation) and unavoidably results in nontransparency and nonuniformity in the gel state, a severe challenge remains in remedying the spinning to make transparent aerogel fibers come true. Herein, we report a reaction spinning toward highly porous silica aerogel fibers, where the Brownian motion (i.e., diffusion) of colloidal particles is hampered during spinning to allow the maintaining of the fiber shape, while a rapid gelation reaction is activated by concentrated ammonia to solidify the fiber. The aggregation degree of the primary particles can be precisely controlled by pH-dependent hydrolyzation, and thus, the final aerogel fiber can be either transparent or opaque, as dominated by Rayleigh or Mie scattering. Abstract:Silica aerogels with high porosity, low density, and unusual three-dimensional network space structure are interesting for various applications. However, there are easily collapsed structures and poor mechanical qualities, which present a great obstacle to their practical applications. Herein, we reported a universal strategy to realize by combining wet-laid glass fiber felt (80 % glass fiber and 20 % hot melt fiber) with silica aerogel to assemble micro-nanopore structures. The results demonstrated that, compared to glass fiber felt (GF), the silica aerogel/glass fiber/hot melt fiber composites (SGMs) increased 0.33 MPa in tensile strength, and sound transmission loss (STL) could be improved by more than 10 dB when the frequency was above 2000 Hz. Besides, SGMs had good thermal stability (375 °C) and excellent thermal insulation with the optimal thermal conductivity coefficient 0.038 W (m k) -1 . It can be widely used in the field of sound insulation and thermal insulation.

Abstract:Herein, the obtained aerogel fibers can achieve effective rebound even after 90% radial compression, and there is no obvious change after 50 cycles. They can be knotted, woven into textiles, and washed. This will promote the application of aerogel fibers in the field of thermal insulation textile. When nanoporous aerogels with excellent thermal insulation performance are processed into 1D fibers, they have great potential for application in the field of personal thermal management. However, coping with the impact of external forces, especially radial extrusion, and maintaining the macro morphology and microstructure of aerogels during use are remaining issues. To address these challenges, this study proposes a method that uses ultrafine and ultra‐highly entangled bacterial cellulose nanofibers as the basis to achieve high radial elasticity by forming an isomorphic coating of rigid silica on the soft gel skeleton of aerogel fibers. The obtained aerogel fibers can achieve an elastic recovery of 88% over 50 compression cycles under 90% strain, and they can be knotted, woven into textiles, and are washable. This strategy improves the radial compression resistance of aerogel fibers, providing rich possibilities for the development of aerogel fibers with excellent mechanical properties.

Abstract:Silica aerogels are utilized in the industry and scientific investigations. However, most silica aerogels are brittle, which hinders their development and application. In this paper, we reported the design and synthesis of a silica aerogel composite reinforced with silica nanowires by using two silicon sources: propyltriethoxysilane and tetraethoxysilane. The effects of varying silica nanowires contents on the properties of the silica aerogel composites were studied and compared with those of neat silica aerogel under identical conditions. The composites were obtained by mixing silica nanowires with hybrid silica sol without surface modification and dried in ambient atmosphere. The samples showed low density (0.172 g cm−3), high porosity (over 90%), and super hydrophobicity (the water contact angle reached 153°). The cross-linked silica aerogel composites showed excellent mechanical behavior and can be compressed by as high as 70% of their initial length before they were broken. The maximum completely recoverable compressive strain reached 50%. The elastic modulus of the optimal silica nanowires/silica aerogel composite increased by 67% (from 0.21 to 0.35 MPa) compared with that of the neat silica aerogel. The cross-linked propyltriethoxysilane and tetraethoxysilane can be used to synthesize new types of elastic silica aerogels, and the excellent performance of the silica nanowires/silica aerogels composite will enable its application in various fields.

Abstract:Ceramic aerogels are attractive for thermal insulation due to its lightweight and low thermal conductivity, while it is indispensable to address the obstacle of its brittleness nature and large-scale manufacturing for building efficiency applications. The economical manufacturing of large-scale elastic thermal insulation aerogels has remained challenging. Herein, we report a universal manufacturing of the fiberglass reinforced aerogel composites where the architectured three-dimensional fiber networks with the crosslinked silica aerogel exhibit superinsulation and mechanical elasticity. These remarkable performances are obtained through in-situ cross-linking reaction between molecular assembly induced aerogel and fiberglass under ambient pressure drying environment, in which the interfacial interactions are verified from its infrared spectra. The resulting ultralight aerogel composite sheet exhibits a density of 0.1 g cm(-3), large strain recovery (> 50%), and low thermal conductivity (0.0253 W m(-1) K-1). The thermal insulation aero gel composites shed light on the super-elastic aerogel manufacturing with scalability for energy saving building applications. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Aerogels attract a lot of attention due to their high porosity, high specific surface area, low density, and low thermal conductivity. However, high cost, complex manufacturing process, and poor mechanical properties hinder their application in the industrial sector. Herein, we examined the effect of strengthening silica-based aerogels with short jute ( Corchorus olitorius ) fibers. Gels containing a commercial silica sol, water, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and jute fibers were prepared, then freeze-dried for 36 h to yield SiO 2 /PVA/PEG-Jute aerogels with different jute fiber contents. The aerogel prepared with a fiber content of 3 wt.% possessed excellent thermal insulation properties (thermal conductivity of 0.05355 W/m K), a linear elongation of 80%, and a compressive strength of 1.1 MPa (8 times higher than the aerogel prepared without jute fibers). The addition of low-cost jute fibers thus maintains the desirable thermal insulation properties of SiO 2 -based aerogels whilst significantly improving their mechanical properties (aerogel flexibility, compression performance and shrinkage resistance) for different end uses.

Ultrahigh-strength silicone aerogels reinforced by an armor-like epoxy framework via a temperature-controlled sequential reaction strategy

Abstract:Aerogels with low density and high porosity are extremely attractive for high-performance insulation, but their brittleness, complicated fabrication, and poor mechanical properties greatly limit their practical applications. Herein, we report an ultrahigh-strength silicone aerogel with an armor-like epoxy framework via a temperature-controlled sequential reaction strategy. The key to this synthesis is forming a Si-O-Si framework via the polycondensation of silanes at 100 °C, followed by in-situ armoring an epoxy framework via an intermolecular cyclization at an elevated temperature of 150 °C. Owing to the enhanced framework, the resulting aerogel could withstand capillary tension in the drying process, enabling it to be dried at ambient pressure without shrinkage. The obtained aerogel possesses a tunable density of 0.17-0.45 g/cm3 and ultrahigh-strength with compressive modulus up to 37.8-244.3 MPa, which surpasses other polymer-reinforced silicone aerogels by a factor of five in mechanical properties. It also demonstrates outstanding thermal insulation, with an extremely low thermal conductivity from 0.025 to 0.051 W m-1 K-1 at room temperature, and maintains thermal characteristics across a temperature range of -20 to 300 °C. Furthermore, the aerogel composites prepared by the reinforcement of low-density fiber mats have tunable densities of 0.36-0.87 g/cm3, much enhanced tensile strengths of 15.9-72.3 MPa, and low thermal conductivities at room temperature of 0.042-0.078 W m-1 K-1. This study presents a cost-effective method for enhancing the production of silicone aerogel materials, offering considerable opportunities for their application in insulation, energy transport, and the aerospace sector.
