Abstract:Air-clad silica nanofibers, named for their submicrometer diameters, have a large core–cladding index contrast for efficient optical confinement. For single-mode operation, these fibers are usually thinner than the wavelength of the light they carry and are therefore also called sub wavelength-diameter fibers. The small diameter of a nanofiber and the large core–cladding index contrast yield a number of interesting optical properties such as tight optical confinement, large evanescent fields, strong field enhancement, and large waveguide dispersions. A few techniques can be used to fabricate silica nanowires or nanofibers such as photo or electron beam lithography, chemical growth, and taper drawing of optical fibers. The taper-drawing method exhibits simplicity in fabrication and also the ability to fabricate nanofibers with extraordinary diameter uniformities, atomic-level surface smoothness, and long length that are difficult to achieve by any other means. The nanofibers obtained with the two-step taper-drawing techniques consist of three parts—a millimeters-long taper that is connected to the starting microfiber, a uniform nanofiber with a length up to tens of millimeters, and an abruptly tapered end that is usually several to tens of micrometers in length.

Abstract:Subwavelength-diameter silica wires fabricated using a taper-drawing approach exhibit excellent diameter uniformity and atomic-level smoothness, making them suitable for low-loss optical wave guiding from the UV to the near-infrared. Such air-clad silica wires can be used as single-mode waveguides; depending on wavelength and wire diameter, they either tightly confine the optical fields or leave a certain amount of guided energy outside the wire in the form of evanescent waves. Using these wire waveguides as building blocks we assembled microscale optical components such as linear waveguides, waveguide bends and branch couplers on a low-index, non-dissipative silica aerogel substrate. These components are much smaller than comparable existing devices and have low optical loss, indicating that the wire-assembly technique presented here has great potential for developing microphotonics devices for future applications in a variety of fields such as optical communication, optical sensing and high-density optical integration.

Abstract:Silica aerogel is a very light and highly porous form of silica glass, with densities and refractive indices much lower than those of ordinary solids. We describe optical interactions with aerogel surrounding tapered fibres or inside the holes of photonic crystal fibres. This enables a new class of fibre devices exploiting the properties of the aerogel as a rigid yet porous replacement for air, as a nonlinear medium and as a host for dopants. Examples include a stable package for fused couplers, a gas sensor and a nonlinear light source.

Abstract:Silica nanowires provide strong mode confinement in a cylindrical silica-core/air-cladding geometry and serve a model system for studying nonlinear propagation of short optical pulses inside fibers. We report on the fiber diameter dependence of the supercontinuum generated by femtosecond laser pulses in silica fiber tapers with average diameters in the range of 200 nm to 1200 nm. We observe a strong diameter-dependence of the spectral broadening, which can be attributed to the fiber's diameter-dependent dispersion and nonlinearity. The short interaction length (less than 20 mm) and the low energy threshold for supercontinuum generation (about 1 nJ) make tapered fibers with diameters between 400 nm and 800 nm an ideal source of coherent white-light source in nanophotonics.

Abstract:Subwavelength- and nanometer-diameter glass nanofibers have been fabricated using a high-temperature taper-drawing process. As-drawn nanofibers show extraordinary uniformities in terms of diameter variation and surface roughness and are suitable for single-mode optical wave guiding. Measured optical losses of these nanofibers are typically below 0.1dB/mm. Photonic devices such as linear waveguides, optical couplers and microrings assembled with nanofibers are also demonstrated. Our results show that taper-drawn glass nanofibers are promising building blocks for micro- and nano-scale photonic devices.

Abstract:Nanofibres, optical fibres narrower than the wavelength of light, degrade in hours on exposure to air. We show that encapsulation in hydrophobic silica aerogel (refractive index 1.05) provides protection and stability (over 2 months) without sacrificing low attenuation, strong confinement and accessible evanescent field. The measured attenuation was <0.03 dB/mm, over 10 × lower than reported with other encapsulants. This enables many nanofibre applications based on their extreme small size and strong external evanescent field, such as optical sensors, nonlinear optics, nanofibre circuits and high-Q resonators. The aerogel is more than a waterproof box, it is a completely-compatible gas-permeable material in intimate contact with the nanofibre and hydrophobic on both the macroscopic and molecular scales. Its benefits are illustrated by experiments on gas sensing (exploiting the aerogel's porosity) and supercontinuum generation (exploiting its ultra-low index).

Abstract:Silica aerogel, renowned for its low thermal conductivity and high optical transparency, is widely used as a transparent insulating material. However, its inherent fragility significantly hinders its practical performance. In this study, a type of nanofibrous silica aerogel is investigated to strengthen the mechanical properties and achieve improved optical transparency. The fibrous microstructure of aerogel is numerically reproduced by the Voronoi Tessellation algorithm. Its radiative properties are analyzed through a combination of the discrete dipoles approximation (DDA) and the Monte Carlo (MC) method, examining the influence of frame structure, fiber radius, porosity, and thickness. Findings indicate that aerogels with fiber radius under 1 nm, over 95% porosity, and thickness below 1 cm fulfill the criteria for light transmission and haze necessary for energy-efficient windows. Energy simulations of fibrous aerogel windows across various Chinese climates suggested up to 45% of energy savings compared to traditional single-pane windows. Furthermore, the study assessed the economic and environmental advantages of aerogel windows throughout their life cycle, offering valuable insights for sustainable building design.

Abstract:Optical transmission measurements were made on 98% porosity silica aerogel samples under various degrees of uniaxial strain. Uniaxially compressed aerogels exhibit large birefringence, proportional to the amount of compression, up to the 15% strain studied. The birefringence is mostly reversible and reproducible through multiple compression-decompression cycles. Our study demonstrates that uniaxially strained high porosity aerogels can be used as tunable waveplates in a broad spectral range.

Abstract:Lightweight, nanoporous aerogel fibers are crucial for personal thermal management and specialized heat protection. However, wet-spinning methods, exemplified by aramid aerogels, inevitably form a dense outer layer, significantly reducing the volume fraction of efficient thermal barrier nanovoids and limiting the development of ultimate thermal resistance in fibers. Herein, we develop a microfluidic spinning method to prepare gradient all-nanostructure aramid aerogel fibers (GAFs). Benefiting from the simultaneous shear alignment and diffusion dilution of a good solvent within the channels, the precursor gel fibers assemble into a structure with a sparse exterior and dense interior, which reverses during supercritical drying to form sheath and core layers with average pore diameters of 150 nm and 600 nm, respectively. Experiments and simulations reveal that the gradient nanostructure creates high interfacial thermal resistance at heat transfer interfaces, resulting in a GAF radial thermal conductivity as low as 0.0228 W m–1 K–1, far below that of air and wet-spun aerogel fibers. Moreover, GAF's unique nano-entangled network efficiently dissipates stress, achieving exceptionally high tensile strength (29.5 MPa) and fracture strain (39.2%). This work establishes a correlation between multiscale nanostructures and superlative performance, thereby expanding the scope of aerogel applications in intricate environments.

Abstract:Aerogel fibers, the simultaneous embodiment of aerogel 3D network and fibrous geometry, have shown great advantages over natural and synthetic fibers in thermal insulation. However, as a fast gelation to ensure aerogel fiber spinning generally induces rapid local clustering of precursor particles (i.e., phase separation) and unavoidably results in nontransparency and nonuniformity in the gel state, a severe challenge remains in remedying the spinning to make transparent aerogel fibers come true. Herein, we report a reaction spinning toward highly porous silica aerogel fibers, where the Brownian motion (i.e., diffusion) of colloidal particles is hampered during spinning to allow the maintaining of the fiber shape, while a rapid gelation reaction is activated by concentrated ammonia to solidify the fiber. The aggregation degree of the primary particles can be precisely controlled by pH-dependent hydrolyzation, and thus, the final aerogel fiber can be either transparent or opaque, as dominated by Rayleigh or Mie scattering. Synthesis and characterization of ambient-dried microglass fibers/silica aerogel nanocomposites with low thermal conductivity

Abstract:A new ambient-dried silica aerogel nanocomposites reinforced by smaller diameter microglass fiber mat were synthesized. Effects of gel treatment and drying temperature, molar ratio of modification agent and volume content of microglass fiber on the composites’ structure and properties were investigated. Increasing the gel treatment temperature with a gradient multi-segment drying process, the aerogel density and volume shrinkage decreased rapidly. Homogeneous and translucent bulk aerogel could be obtained with the density of 0.129 g/cm3, specific surface area of 731.76 m2/g and average pore size of 20 nm. Fewer cracks, more silica matrix and stronger fiber/silica interface, which significantly improves the mechanical performance of the nanocomposites with a high bending strength of 1.4 MPa. The thermal conductivity of the ambient-dried nanocomposites decreased and the bending strength increased with increasing fibers’ volume content. The retrieved nanocomposites is an excellent thermal insulation material with lower thermal conductivity (0.022 W/m K, 650 °C) and high mechanical performance.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Silica aerogels with high porosity, low density, and unusual three-dimensional network space structure are interesting for various applications. However, there are easily collapsed structures and poor mechanical qualities, which present a great obstacle to their practical applications. Herein, we reported a universal strategy to realize by combining wet-laid glass fiber felt (80 % glass fiber and 20 % hot melt fiber) with silica aerogel to assemble micro-nanopore structures. The results demonstrated that, compared to glass fiber felt (GF), the silica aerogel/glass fiber/hot melt fiber composites (SGMs) increased 0.33 MPa in tensile strength, and sound transmission loss (STL) could be improved by more than 10 dB when the frequency was above 2000 Hz. Besides, SGMs had good thermal stability (375 °C) and excellent thermal insulation with the optimal thermal conductivity coefficient 0.038 W (m k) -1 . It can be widely used in the field of sound insulation and thermal insulation.

Abstract:Silica aerogels are applied extensively in thermal insulation due to their extra-low density and thermal conductivity. However, this can be heavily undermined under high temperature, especially beyond 700-800 degrees C, due to not only a high transparency for radiation heat transfer, but also an instability caused by nanoparticle collapse. The present study demonstrated a solution to this problem by two steps. Firstly, the size effect of nanoparticles is explored by experimentally preparing unconventional samples composed of large-diameter particles (larger than 20 nm). The prepared sample microstructures and radiative characteristics are investigated by SEM apparatus and FTIR measurements, respectively. Additionally, based on the fractal structures reconstructed using the Diffusion-Limited Colloid Aggregation (DLCA) method, the effects of particle size on thermal stability of silica aerogels are theoretically investigated and the light shielding performance is numerically analyzed by the Generalized Multiparticle Mie-solution (GMM) method. The simulation and experimental results indicate that the enhanced size of nanoparticles can improve the radiative inhibition and thermal stability property under high temperature significantly. However, the ideal above should be refined as it brings an increasing contribution of conduction heat transfer. Thus, a novel structure of core-mantle nanoparticle is proposed to retain the excellent resistance in radiation but avoid an increased thermal conduction. The present work may pave a new direction for developing aerogels under extreme temperature conditions, compared with the widely-used opacifier addition.

Abstract:An improved analytical model for the total thermal conductivity of fiber-loaded silica aerogels was developed based on the complex refractive index, size, orientation, volume fraction and morphology of the fibers and silica aerogel. A cubic array of spherical porous secondary nanoparticles and a modified parallel-series model were proposed to model the combined solid and gaseous thermal conductivities. An anomalous diffraction theory (ADT) was used to predict the fiber extinction coefficient. Five common fiber types in the composites were studied including amorphous SiO2 glass, silicon glass, common float glass, soda lime silica glass and borosilicate glass. The results show that the total extinction coefficient of the silica aerogel system is largest by loading with the common float glass fiber and lowest by loading with the soda lime silica glass among the five fiber types. The model provides theoretic guidelines for material designs with optimum parameters, such as the type, inclination angle, volume fraction and diameter of the fibers as well as the aerogel nanoparticle and pore sizes. The optimum fiber for improved thermal insulation should have a large spectral complex refractive index throughout the infrared region.

Abstract:We review our recent progress in the production and characterization of tapered optical fibers with a sub-wavelength diameter waist. Such fibers exhibit a pronounced evanescent field and are therefore a useful tool for highly sensitive evanescent wave spectroscopy of adsorbates on the fiber waist or of the medium surrounding. We use a carefully designed flame pulling process that allows us to realize preset fiber diameter profiles. In order to determine the waist diameter and to verify the fiber profile, we employ scanning electron microscope measurements and a novel accurate in situ optical method based on harmonic generation. We use our fibers for linear and non-linear absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy of surface-adsorbed organic molecules and investigate their agglomeration dynamics. Furthermore, we apply our spectroscopic method to quantum dots on the surface of the fiber waist and to caesium vapor surrounding the fiber. Finally, towards dispersive measurements, we present our first results on building and testing a single-fiber bi-modal interferometer.

Abstract:Aerogels attract a lot of attention due to their high porosity, high specific surface area, low density, and low thermal conductivity. However, high cost, complex manufacturing process, and poor mechanical properties hinder their application in the industrial sector. Herein, we examined the effect of strengthening silica-based aerogels with short jute ( Corchorus olitorius ) fibers. Gels containing a commercial silica sol, water, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyethylene glycol (PEG) and jute fibers were prepared, then freeze-dried for 36 h to yield SiO 2 /PVA/PEG-Jute aerogels with different jute fiber contents. The aerogel prepared with a fiber content of 3 wt.% possessed excellent thermal insulation properties (thermal conductivity of 0.05355 W/m K), a linear elongation of 80%, and a compressive strength of 1.1 MPa (8 times higher than the aerogel prepared without jute fibers). The addition of low-cost jute fibers thus maintains the desirable thermal insulation properties of SiO 2 -based aerogels whilst significantly improving their mechanical properties (aerogel flexibility, compression performance and shrinkage resistance) for different end uses.

Abstract:Due to pure silica aerogel is fragile and nearly transparent to 3-8 mu m infrared beam, reinforced fiber and opacifier are composited with silica aerogel to optimize its performance. The suppression of radiative heat transfer is related to opacifier type, size and content. However, the addition of opacifier will enhance solid conduction inevitably. In addition, the influence of doping opacifier will also be affected by temperature since thermal radiation is temperature and wavelength dependent. Therefore thermal conductivities of 10 fiber and opacifier doped silica aerogel composites are studied experimentally and theoretically. Transmittances of silica aerogel doped with opacifier of different type, size and content are measured within 1.4-25 mu m by FTIR. The spectral extinction coefficient of fiber/opacifier loaded silica aerogel composite is obtained by considering the practical absorption of KBr diluents. The thermal conductivity of silica aerogel composite is measured by transient plane source method at different temperature and gas pressure. Effective model with considering heat conduction via gaseous molecules, matrix skeleton, fiber, opacifier and thermal radiation via skeleton, fiber and opacifier is developed for fast predicting the thermal conductivity of fiber/opacifier doped silica aerogel composite. It is found that the silica aerogels doped with SiC or TiO2 particles has lower radiative thermal conductivity than that doped with ZrO2 particles with volume fraction of 3.75% and diameter of 3.5 mu m. Silica aerogel doped with 3.75%, 3.5 mu m SiC particles has the lowest thermal conductivity at temperature less than 1000 K. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
