Abstract:Context was an unconscious and latent way of thinking in ancient Greece.As a paradigm in contemporary philosophy,context has developed into the three paths: philosophy of language(including analytic philosophy,especially the ordinary language school of philosophy and Continental Ontology),knowledge of contextualism and ontology of context.Whether context is treated as a cognitive model of human beings or an academic theory or a pursuit of the ultimate,it is laden with ontic and ultimate pursuit.Therefore,it is quite advisable to analyze context in the three levels: ontology,epistemology and methodology,so as to build a metaphysical system for philosophical context.

Abstract:Context is a rich concept and is an elusive concept to define. The concept of context has been studied by philosophers, linguists, psychologists, and recently by computer scientists. Within each research community the term context was interpreted in a certain way that is well-suited for their goals, however no attempt was made to define context. In many areas of research in computer science, notably on web-based services, human-computer interaction (HCI), ubiquitous computing applications, and context-aware systems there is a need to provide a formal operational definition of context. In this brief survey an account of the early work on context, as well as the recent work on many working definitions of context, context modeling, and a formalization of context are given. An attempt is made to unify the different context models within the formalization. A brief commentary on the usefulness of the formalization in the development of context-aware and dependable systems is included.

Abstract:This essay explores numerous and complicated naturalized epistemology against the background of pragmatism. We distinguish three programmes of naturalized epistemology: strong, moderate, and weak. By considering commitments of pragmatism on which different programmes depend, we point out the close-knit relationship between pragmatism and naturalized epistemology. We also illustrate the essential origin of today s controversy over naturalized epistemology and predict the uptrend of naturalized epistemology.

Abstract:The contributions of Walter Kintsch that are especially relevant for the field of discourse studies are his studies on mental models, knowledge, and strategic discourse processing. Based on his earlier work regarding mental models and how they account for the cognitive semantics of discourse, this paper advocates for the extension of this theory to the pragmatics of discourse in the form of context models, featuring the parameters of the communicative situation: time, place, participants (identities, roles, relations), action, goals, knowledge, and their expression in deictic or indexical structures of text or talk.

Abstract:There exists a dispute in philosophy, going back at least to Leibniz, whether is it possible to view the world as a network of relations and relations between relations with the role of objects, between which these relations hold, entirely eliminated. Category theory seems to be the correct mathematical theory for clarifying conceptual possibilities in this respect. In this theory, objects acquire their identity either by definition, when in defining category we postulate the existence of objects, or formally by the existence of identity morphisms. We show that it is perfectly possible to get rid of the identity of objects by definition, but the formal identity of objects remains as an essential element of the theory. This can be achieved by defining category exclusively in terms of morphisms and identity morphisms (objectless, or object free, category) and, analogously, by defining category theory entirely in terms of functors and identity functors (categoryless, or category free, category theory). With objects and categories eliminated, we focus on the "philosophy of arrows" and the roles various identities play in it (identities as such, identities up to isomorphism, identities up to natural isomorphism...). This perspective elucides a contrast between "set ontology" and "categorical ontology".

Abstract:Within the framework of a broadly Wittgensteinian approach, we criticize metaphysical realism, structural realism and Platonism in philosophy of physics and propose to replace them with what we call "contextual scientific realism." According to this position, ontology is sensitive to context. Our view is illustrated with both ordinary and physical examples. In particular, we claim that the Higgs boson is a contextual entity within the framework of the Standard Model and the practice of its application, and that, in a sense, the nature of gravitational waves depends on the choice of a physical theory to describe them. A physical theory is interpreted as a Wittgensteinian rule (norm) for measuring physical reality within the language games if its applications. Contextual scientific realism explains the success of our best scientific theories and (dis)solves the problem of pessimistic meta-induction.

Abstract:Why does a science about "Being as being" occupy the position of the "First Philosophy?" Three reasons are in order. At the beginning,the concern is not that Being as being is perceived as the divine,but that the possibility of speaking and thinking must be re-established after the Heraclitic shock. Later on,philosophers realized that there might be different kinds of "beings" and some of them are more essential than the other. However,Aristotle's profound move is to finally locate this essentiality in particular "activities" of things. Thus,a system of "activities" has organized everything in an ontological cosmos and makes them meaningful than merely "subsisting."

Abstract:This paper introduces the Quantum Contextual Topos (QCT), a novel framework that extends traditional quantum logic by embedding contextual elements within a topos-theoretic structure. This framework seeks to provide a classically-obedient tool for exploring the logical foundations of quantum mechanics. The QCT framework aims to address the limitations of classical quantum logic, particularly its challenges in capturing the dynamic and contextual nature of quantum phenomena. By integrating modal operators and classical propositional logic within a topos structure, the QCT offers a unified approach to modeling quantum systems. The main result of this work is demonstrating that the internal logic of QCT corresponds to a form of classical propositional polymodal logic. We do this by generalizing Stone's Representation Theorem for a specific case of polymodal algebras and their underlying Stone Spaces.

Abstract:In this paper, the author reviews recent developments in twentieth century philosophy. Three important movements emerged independently, movements which for different reasons rapidly came to dominate the debate: American pragmatism, so-called continental philosophy, and Anglo-American analytic philosophy. Each of these tendencies has its own undeniable charms. It would be mistaken to think that one has a decisive advantage over its philosophical competition. The author argues that these three movements of the past century need to be understood against the prior historical background, above all as reactions to Kant.

Abstract:The growing attention paid to the relational spaces of collective action is good news. It owes a lot to the legacy of interactionism and allows us to more accurately grasp the relevant contexts of protest that cannot be subsumed solely under big contexts such as political opportunity structure, economy, and so on. One can however worry about the never-ending succession of paradigms – more often acronyms – in the subfield of social movement studies. 'Context' issues are in fact linked to the very status of explanation in social sciences, and to the unequal nomological (or conversely more historical) ambitions of social sciences – a debate that is far from being settled. This article insists on this underlying epistemological debate, before highlighting different aspects of what is at stake in the way relational contexts of collective action should be considered: relational understanding of strategies, the link between mobilizations and transformations in and between social spaces, and the role and types of differentiation of society. Here, the classical (but barely translated) work of Michel Dobry appears as particularly useful in order to better understand contexts, if we consider them at the same time through interactions and the differentiation of society. But far from pleading for a new magic bullet, the article intends to support a more historically contextualized approach of social movements that is less interested in the establishment of laws than the understanding of the consequences of specific forms of social differentiations. This understanding could ultimately lead to a good definition of what relevant context of collective action might be.

Abstract:Trust is an important aspect of human life. It provides instrumental value in allowing us to collaborate on and defer actions to others, and intrinsic value in our intimate relationships with romantic partners, family, and friends. In this paper I examine the nature of trust from a philosophical perspective. Specifically I propose to view trust as a context-sensitive state in a manner that will be made precise. The contribution of this paper is threefold. First, I make the simple observation that an individual's trust is typically both action- and context-sensitive. Action-sensitivity means that trust may obtain between a given truster and trustee for only certain actions. Context-sensitivity means that trust may obtain between a given truster and trustee, regarding the same action, in some conditions and not others. I also opine about what kinds of things may play the role of the truster, trustee, and action. Second, I advance a theory for the nature of contextual trust. I propose that the answer to "What does it mean for $A$ to trust $B$ to do $X$ in context $C$?" has two conditions. First, $A$ must take $B$'s doing $X$ as a means towards one of $A$'s ends. Second, $A$ must adopt an unquestioning attitude concerning $B$'s doing $X$ in context $C$. This unquestioning attitude is similar to the attitude introduced in Nguyen 2021. Finally, we explore how contextual trust can help us make sense of trust in general non-interpersonal settings, notably that of artificial intelligence (AI) systems. The field of Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) assigns paramount importance to the problem of user trust in opaque computational models, yet does little to give trust diagnostic or even conceptual criteria. I propose that contextual trust is a natural fit for the task by illustrating that model transparency and explainability map nicely into our construction of the contexts $C$.

Abstract:Contextualism is a key feature of current STS.The aim of contextualism is to resolve the contradiction between SSK's essentialist approach of ontology,normalist epistemology and naturalist methodology.Naturalism employed by current STSers endows science with practical,contingent,open and local characteristics in order to ontologize the epistemological issues.Philosophically,this contextulism is a practical and historical epistemology which then leads to a historical ontology.The contextualist approach reduces the conflict between social constructivism and realism,and unfolds the new future of STS.

Abstract:I assess various proposals for the source of the intuition that there is something problematic about contextuality, ultimately concluding that contextuality is best thought of in terms of fine-tuning. I then argue that as with other fine-tuning problems in quantum mechanics, this behaviour can be understood as a manifestation of teleological features of physics. Finally I discuss several formal mathematical frameworks that have been used to analyse contextuality and consider how their results should be interpreted by scientific realists. In the course of this discussion I obtain several new mathematical results - I demonstrate that preparation contextuality is a form of fine-tuning, I show that measurement contextuality can be explained by appeal to a global constraint forbidding closed causal loops, and I demonstrate how negative probabilities can arise from a classical ontological model together with an epistemic restriction.

Abstract:A stream of conscious experience is extremely contextual; it is impacted by sensory stimuli, drives and emotions, and the web of associations that link, directly or indirectly, the subject of experience to other elements of the individual's worldview. The contextuality of one's conscious experience both enhances and constrains the contextuality of one's behavior. Since we cannot know first-hand the conscious experience of another, it is by way of behavioral contextuality that we make judgements about whether or not, and to what extent, a system is conscious. Thus we believe that a deep understanding of contextuality is vital to the study of consciousness. Methods have been developed for handling contextuality in the microworld of quantum particles. Our goal has been to investigate the extent to which these methods can be used to analyze contextuality in conscious experience. This work is the fledgling efforts of a recently-initiated interdisciplinary collaboration.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the relationship between the unary predicates"good","bad"and the binary predicate"better".We first review some proposals in the research field of preference logic,showing that most of those works define"good"or"bad"from"better".Then we introduce van Benthem's idea of defining"better"in terms of"good"and context,and we illustrate that the notion of context plays an important role in such discussions.Finally,a formal modal language and semantics are presented to discuss the properties of context,and to represent the three principles concerning changes of context. The paper ends with some open problems.

Abstract:Psychology has had difficulty accounting for the creative, context-sensitive manner in which concepts are used. We believe this stems from the view of concepts as identifiers rather than bridges between mind and world that participate in the generation of meaning. This paper summarizes the history and current status of concepts research, and provides a non-technical summary of work toward an ecological approach to concepts. We outline the rationale for applying generalizations of formalisms originally developed for use in quantum mechanics to the modeling of concepts, showing how it is because of the role of context that deep structural similarities exist between the two. A concept is defined not just in terms of exemplary states and their features or properties, but also by the relational structures of these properties, and their susceptibility to change under different contexts. The approach implies a view of mind in which the union of perception and environment drives conceptualization, forging a web of conceptual relations or 'ecology of mind'.

Dynamics is shown at work in an analysis of certain anaphoric relations in terms of contextually restricted quantification. It is argued that accounting for these anaphoric relations calls for an analysis at the level of semantic content rather than by linkink formal elements in a representational framework.
