Abstract:Contextual situations are those in which seemingly "the same" random variable changes its identity depending on the conditions under which it is recorded. Such a change of identity is observed whenever the assumption that the variable is one and the same under different conditions leads to contradictions when one considers its joint distribution with other random variables (this is the essence of all Bell-type theorems). In our Contextuality-by-Default approach, instead of asking why or how the conditions force "one and the same" random variable to change "its" identity, any two random variables recorded under different conditions are considered different "automatically". They are never the same, nor are they jointly distributed, but one can always impose on them a joint distribution (probabilistic coupling). The special situations when there is a coupling in which these random variables are equal with probability 1 are considered non-contextual. Contextuality means that such couplings do not exist. We argue that the determination of the identity of random variables by conditions under which they are recorded is not a causal relationship and cannot violate laws of physics.

Contextual Robustness: an Operational Measure of Contextuality

Abstract:The operational characterization of contextuality is the cornerstone in the development of resource theory of contextuality. Here, we introduce contextual robustness as an operational measure of contextuality on empirical models. We first show that it satisfies all the properties a proper contextual measure should satisfy. Besides, we derive the linear programing of contextual robustness and prove that contextual robustness exactly characterizes the maximal violation of certain types of Bell inequalities. Moreover, we show that contextual robustness quantifies the accessible advantage of empiric models in measurement-based quantum computation, and provide a tighter upper bound on accessible advantage in certain cases.

Abstract:A stream of conscious experience is extremely contextual; it is impacted by sensory stimuli, drives and emotions, and the web of associations that link, directly or indirectly, the subject of experience to other elements of the individual's worldview. The contextuality of one's conscious experience both enhances and constrains the contextuality of one's behavior. Since we cannot know first-hand the conscious experience of another, it is by way of behavioral contextuality that we make judgements about whether or not, and to what extent, a system is conscious. Thus we believe that a deep understanding of contextuality is vital to the study of consciousness. Methods have been developed for handling contextuality in the microworld of quantum particles. Our goal has been to investigate the extent to which these methods can be used to analyze contextuality in conscious experience. This work is the fledgling efforts of a recently-initiated interdisciplinary collaboration.

Abstract:There has been a growing interest, both in physics and psychology, in understanding contextuality in experimentally observed quantities. Different approaches have been proposed to deal with contextual systems, and a promising one is contextuality-by-default, put forth by Dzhafarov and Kujala. The goal of this paper is to present a tutorial on a different approach: negative probabilities. We do so by presenting the overall theory of negative probabilities in a way that is consistent with contextuality-by-default and by examining with this theory some simple examples where contextuality appears, both in physics and psychology.

Abstract:Contextuality has long been associated with topological properties. In this work, such a relationship is elevated to identification in the broader framework of generalized contextuality. We employ the usual identification of states, effects, and transformations as vectors in a vector space and encode them into a tangent space, rendering the noncontextual conditions the generic condition that discrete closed paths imply null phases in valuations, which are immediately extended to the continuous case. Contextual behavior admits two equivalent interpretations in this formalism. In the geometric or intrinsic-realistic view, termed "Schrödinger", flat space is imposed, leading to contextual behavior being expressed as non-trivial holonomy of probabilistic functions, analogous to the electromagnetic tensor. As a modification of the valuation function, we use the equivalent curvature to connect contextuality with interference, noncommutativity, and signed measures. In the topological or participatory-realistic view, termed "Heisenberg", valuation functions must satisfy classical measure axioms, resulting in contextual behavior needing to be expressed in topological defects in events, resulting in non-trivial monodromy. We utilize such defects to connect contextuality with non-embeddability and to construct a generalized Vorob'ev theorem, a result regarding the inevitability of noncontextuality. We identify in this formalism the contextual fraction for models with outcome-determinism, and a pathway to address disturbance in ontological models as non-trivial transition maps. We also discuss how the two views for encoding contextuality relate to interpretations of quantum theory.

Abstract:Dzhafarov, Zhang, and Kujala (Phil. Trans. Roy. Soc. A 374, 20150099) reviewed several behavioral data sets imitating the formal design of the quantum-mechanical contextuality experiments. The conclusion was that none of these data sets exhibited contextuality if understood in the generalized sense proposed in Dzhafarov, Kujala, and Larsson (Found. Phys. 7, 762-782, 2015), while the traditional definition of contextuality does not apply to these data because they violate the condition of consistent connectedness (also known as marginal selectivity, no-signaling condition, no-disturbance principle, etc.). In this paper we clarify the relationship between (in)consistent connectedness and (non)contextuality, as well as between the traditional and extended definitions of (non)contextuality, using as an example the Clauser-Horn-Shimony-Holt (CHSH) inequalities originally designed for detecting contextuality in entangled particles.

Abstract:This chapter contains an exposition of the sheaf-theoretic framework for contextuality emphasising resource-theoretic aspects, as well as some original results on this topic. In particular, we consider functions that transform empirical models on a scenario S to empirical models on another scenario T, and characterise those that are induced by classical procedures between S and T corresponding to 'free' operations in the (non-adaptive) resource theory of contextuality. We construct a new 'hom' scenario built from S and T, whose empirical models induce such functions. Our characterisation then boils down to being induced by a non-contextual model. We also show that this construction on scenarios provides a closed structure on the category of measurement scenarios.

How contextuality and antidistinguishability are related

Abstract:Contextuality is a key characteristic that separates quantum from classical phenomena and an important tool in understanding the potential advantage of quantum computation. However, when assessing the quantum resources available for quantum information processing, there is no formalism to determine whether a set of states can exhibit contextuality and whether such proofs of contextuality indicate anything about the resourcefulness of that set. Introducing a well-motivated notion of what it means for a set of states to be contextual, we establish a relationship between contextuality and antidistinguishability of sets of states. We go beyond the traditional notions of contextuality and antidistinguishability and treat both properties as resources, demonstrating that the degree of contextuality within a set of states has a direct connection to its level of antidistinguishability. If a set of states is contextual, then it must be weakly antidistinguishable and vice-versa. However, maximal contextuality emerges as a stronger property than traditional antidistinguishability.

On Principles and Representations for Extended Contextuality

Abstract:There has been recent interest in whether the concept of quantum contextuality can be extended to systems with disturbance or signaling while retaining the essential properties of standard contextuality. Dzhafarov and Kujala (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2302.11995" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2302.11995">arXiv:2302.11995</a>) offer a provocative argument that the answer is always affirmative: If standard contextuality satisfies some principle that extended contextuality does not, then that principle must be `non-substantive' in that it depends on a superficial choice of representation. Their argument is based on a ``consistification'' procedure that maps all systems to nondisturbing ones and that preserves contextuality. This paper raises several objections to their argument, including that it neglects how substantive principles change their expression under a change of representation, that it begs the question by presuming the principles are based on non-substantive transformations, and that the argument applies universally to arbitrary extensions of contextuality.

Contextuality Can be Verified with Noncontextual Experiments

Abstract:We uncover new features of generalized contextuality by connecting it to the Kirkwood-Dirac (KD) quasiprobability distribution. Quantum states can be represented by KD distributions, which take values in the complex unit disc. Only for ``KD-positive'' states are the KD distributions joint probability distributions. A KD distribution can be measured by a series of weak and projective measurements. We design such an experiment and show that it is contextual iff the underlying state is not KD-positive. We analyze this connection with respect to mixed KD-positive states that cannot be decomposed as convex combinations of pure KD-positive states. Our result is the construction of a noncontextual experiment that enables an experimenter to verify contextuality.

Abstract:I assess various proposals for the source of the intuition that there is something problematic about contextuality, ultimately concluding that contextuality is best thought of in terms of fine-tuning. I then argue that as with other fine-tuning problems in quantum mechanics, this behaviour can be understood as a manifestation of teleological features of physics. Finally I discuss several formal mathematical frameworks that have been used to analyse contextuality and consider how their results should be interpreted by scientific realists. In the course of this discussion I obtain several new mathematical results - I demonstrate that preparation contextuality is a form of fine-tuning, I show that measurement contextuality can be explained by appeal to a global constraint forbidding closed causal loops, and I demonstrate how negative probabilities can arise from a classical ontological model together with an epistemic restriction.

True Contextuality Beats Direct Influences in Human Decision Making

Abstract:In quantum physics there are well-known situations when measurements of the same property in different contexts (under different conditions) have the same probability distribution, but cannot be represented by one and the same random variable. Such systems of random variables are called contextual. More generally, true contextuality is observed when different contexts force measurements of the same property (in psychology, responses to the same question) to be more dissimilar random variables than warranted by the difference of their distributions. The difference in distributions is itself a form of context-dependence, but of another nature: it is attributable to direct causal influences exerted by contexts upon the random variables. The Contextuality-by-Default (CbD) theory allows one to separate true contextuality from direct influences in the overall context-dependence. The CbD analysis of numerous previous attempts to demonstrate contextuality in human judgments shows that all context-dependence in them can be accounted for by direct influences, with no true contextuality present. However, contextual systems in human behavior can be found. In this paper we present a series of crowdsourcing experiments that exhibit true contextuality in simple decision making.}{The design of these experiments is an elaboration of one introduced in the "Snow Queen" experiment (Decision 5, 193-204, 2018), where contextuality was for the first time demonstrated unequivocally.

Abstract:Contextuality and entanglement are valuable resources for quantum computing and quantum information. Bell inequalities are used to certify entanglement; thus, it is important to understand why and how they are violated. Quantum mechanics and behavioral sciences teach us that random variables measuring the same content (the answer to the same Yes or No question) may vary, if measured jointly with other random variables. Alice and Bob raw data confirm Einsteinian non-signaling, but setting dependent experimental protocols are used to create samples of coupled pairs of distant outcomes and to estimate correlations. Marginal expectations, estimated using these final samples, depend on distant settings. Therefore, a system of random variables measured in Bell tests is inconsistently connected and it should be analyzed using a Contextuality-by-Default approach, what is done for the first time in this paper. The violation of Bell inequalities and inconsistent connectedness may be explained using a contextual locally causal probabilistic model in which setting dependent variables describing measuring instruments are correctly incorporated. We prove that this model does not restrict experimenters freedom of choice which is a prerequisite of science. Contextuality seems to be the rule and not an exception; thus, it should be carefully tested.
Contextuality in the Bundle Approach, n-Contextuality, and the Role of Holonomy

Abstract:Contextuality can be understood as the impossibility to construct a globally consistent description of a model even if there is local agreement. In particular, quantum models present this property. We can describe contextuality with the bundle approach, where the scenario is represented as a simplicial complex, the fibers being the sets of outcomes, and contextuality as the non-existence of global section in the measure bundle. Using the generalization to non-finite outcome fibers, we built in details the concept of measure bundle, demonstrating the Fine-Abramsky-Brandenburger theorem for the bundle formalism. We introduce a hierarchy called n-contextuality to explore the dependence of contextual behavior of a model to the topology of the scenario, following the construction of it as a simplicial complex. With it we exemplify the dependence on higher homology groups and show that GHZ models, thus quantum theory, has all levels of the hierarchy. Also, we give an example of how non-trivial topology of the scenario result an increase of contextual behavior. For the first level of the hierarchy, we construct the concept of connection through Markov operators for the measure bundle. Taking the case of equal fibers we can identify the outcomes as the basis of a vector space, that transform according to a group extracted from the connection. We thus show that contextuality has a relationship with the non-triviality of the holonomy group in the respective frame bundle.

Abstract:Language is contextual as meanings of words are dependent on their contexts. Contextuality is, concomitantly, a well-defined concept in quantum mechanics where it is considered a major resource for quantum computations. We investigate whether natural language exhibits any of the quantum mechanics' contextual features. We show that meaning combinations in ambiguous phrases can be modelled in the sheaf-theoretic framework for quantum contextuality, where they can become possibilistically contextual. Using the framework of Contextuality-by-Default (CbD), we explore the probabilistic variants of these and show that CbD-contextuality is also possible.

Abstract: A PhD student is locked inside a box, imitating a quantum system by mimicking the measurement statistics of any viable observable nominated by external observers. Inside a second box lies a genuine quantum system. Either box can be used to pass a test for contextuality - and from the perspective of an external observer, be operationally indistinguishable. There is no way to discriminate between the two boxes based on the output statistics of any contextuality test. This poses a serious problem for contextuality tests to be used as viable tests for device independent quantumness, and severely limits realistic use of contextuality as an operational resource. Here we rectify this problem by building experimental techniques for distinguishing a contextual system that is genuinely quantum, and one that mimics it through clever use of hidden variables.

Abstract:Various frameworks that generalise the notion of contextuality in theories of physics have been proposed; one is the sheaf-theoretic approach by Abramsky and Brandenburger; an other is the equivalence-based approach by Spekkens. We show that these frameworks are equivalent for scenarios with preparations and measurements, whenever factorizability is justified. This connection gives rise to a categorical isomorphism between suitable categories. We combine the advantages of the two approaches to derive a canonical method for detecting contextuality in such settings.

Abstract:Context is a rich concept and is an elusive concept to define. The concept of context has been studied by philosophers, linguists, psychologists, and recently by computer scientists. Within each research community the term context was interpreted in a certain way that is well-suited for their goals, however no attempt was made to define context. In many areas of research in computer science, notably on web-based services, human-computer interaction (HCI), ubiquitous computing applications, and context-aware systems there is a need to provide a formal operational definition of context. In this brief survey an account of the early work on context, as well as the recent work on many working definitions of context, context modeling, and a formalization of context are given. An attempt is made to unify the different context models within the formalization. A brief commentary on the usefulness of the formalization in the development of context-aware and dependable systems is included.

Exploration of Contextuality in a Psychophysical Double-Detection Experiment

Abstract:The Contextuality-by-Default (CbD) theory allows one to separate contextuality from context-dependent errors and violations of selective influences (aka “no-signaling” or “no-disturbance” principles). This makes the theory especially applicable to behavioral systems, where violations of selective influences are ubiquitous. For cyclic systems with binary random variables, CbD provides necessary and sufficient conditions for noncontextuality, and these conditions are known to be breached in certain quantum systems. We apply the theory of cyclic systems to a psychophysical double-detection experiment, in which observers were asked to determine presence or absence of a signal property in each of two simultaneously presented stimuli. The results, as in all other behavioral and social systems previously analyzed, indicate lack of contextuality. The role of context in double-detection is confined to lack of selectiveness: the distribution of responses to one of the stimuli is influenced by the state of the other stimulus.

Abstract:Quantum theory features several phenomena which can be considered as resources for information processing tasks. Some of these effects, such as entanglement, arise in a nonlocal scenario, where a quantum state is distributed between different parties. Other phenomena, such as contextuality, can be observed if quantum states are prepared and then subjected to sequences of measurements. We use robust remote state preparation to connect the nonlocal and sequential scenarios and provide an intimate connection between different resources: We prove that entanglement in a nonlocal scenario can arise only if there is preparation and measurement contextuality in the corresponding sequential scenario and that the absence of entanglement implies the absence of contextuality. As a direct consequence, our result allows us to translate any inequality for testing preparation and measurement contextuality into an entanglement test; in addition, entanglement witnesses can be used to design novel contextuality inequalities.
