Abstract:Using an environmentally friendly solvent, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone, a polymer with benzodithiophene (BDT) and thieno[3,4-b]thiophene (TT) monomers and triethylene glycol monoether (TEG) side chains, PBDTTT-TEG, can be processed into an active layer for a polymer solar cell (PSC). Combined with phenyl-C 71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC 71 BM) as the acceptor, the resulting PSC has a power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.23%. This is the first example of an efficient polymer solar cell fabricated from a non-aromatic and nonchlorinated solvent.

Herein, we propose the incorporation of a B-N covalent bond, which has a dipole moment of 1.84 Debye, into the conjugated backbone of polymer donors to fabricate high-efficiency OSCs from anisole, a real green and eco-compatible solvent recommended by the United Nations. Based on a newly developed B-N-based polymer, the OSCs with a record-high efficiency of 15.65% in the 0.04 cm2 device and 14.01% in the 1.10 cm2 device have thus been realized via real green processing.

Abstract:A new processing protocol based on non-halogenated solvent and additive is developed to produce polymer solar cells with power conversion efficiencies better than those processed from commonly used halogenated solvent-additive pair. Abstract:Understanding how solvents influence the solution-state aggregation of conjugated polymers and film morphology is crucial for solution-processed organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, using the conjugated donor polymer PM7 D2, a more processable derivative of PM7 that readily dissolves in a range of halogenated and nonhalogenated (green) solvents, we find that solvent affinity toward the polymer backbone, as opposed to the alkyl side chains, drastically tunes the polymer solution aggregate structures and the resultant blend film morphologies. Our findings reveal that using a poor side-chain solvent forms semiflexible amorphous networks with strong side-chain associations, whereas using a poor backbone solvent leads to semicrystalline fiber aggregates. On the other hand, mutual solvents, which balance the polymer backbone and side-chain solubility, result in rigid amorphous networks with weak/no side-chain interactions. Upon film deposition via blade coating, both semicrystalline fibers and flexible amorphous network aggregates of PM7 D2 yield highly crystalline films with large domains. In contrast, rigid amorphous aggregates with weak or no side-chain associations prevented excessive crystallization of PM7 D2. We found that the green solvent studied in this work (anisole) exhibits poor affinity toward the backbone but is selective to the alkyl side chains, thus forming semicrystalline fibers in solution. Consequently, PM7 D2:ITIC-4F-based OSCs cast from the green solvent only exhibit 5.8% efficiency. Interestingly, similar to using mutual solvents, utilizing hot solution processing converts the semicrystalline fibers to rigid amorphous network aggregates by increasing the backbone solubility, thereby suppressing the excessive crystallization of PM7 D2. Ultimately, the devices exhibited a significant power conversion efficiency (PCE) improvement from 5.8 to 9%, where they were fully processed and tested under ambient conditions in a glovebox-free environment (without additives).

Abstract:The power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of laboratory-sized organic solar cells (OSCs), usually processed from low-boiling-point and toxic solvents, have reached high values of over 18%. However, there is usually a notable drop of the PCEs when green solvents are used, limiting practical development of OSCs. Herein, we obtain certificated PCEs over 17% in OSCs processed from a green solvent paraxylene (PX) by a guest-assisted assembly strategy, where a third component (guest) is employed to manipulate the molecular interaction of the binary blend. In addition, the high-boiling-point green solvent PX also enables us to deposit a uniform large-area module (36 cm2) with a high efficiency of over 14%. The strong molecular interaction between the host and guest molecules also enhances the operational stability of the devices. Our guest-assisted assembly strategy provides a unique approach to develop large-area and high-efficiency OSCs processed from green solvents, paving the way for industrial development of OSCs.

Abstract:Increasing research interests have been paid to developing efficient polymer solar cells by using integrating non-fullerene acceptors with poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), owing to the low-cost, promising performance and excellent stability. Here we systematically studied how processing solvents influence the overall performances of polymer solar cells using P3HT as the electron donor. It is very interesting to note that the devices processed with the non-halogenated solvent, 2-methylanisole in presence of 1-methylnaphthalene as solvent additive, exhibit reduced bimolecular and trap-assisted monomolecular recombination, facile charge extraction and enhanced charge carrier mobilities. Careful morphological investigation reveals that the optimizing crystallites, phase purity as well as nanofibrous structure is effective to the enhancement of charge generation and transport. It is also worth noting that these P3HT:O-IDTBR based devices processed with these non-halogenated solvents exhibitean impressive power conversion efficiency of 7.1% with a high fill factor of 75.09% on a device area of 0.05 cm2, and the efficiency remained 6.89% even in a device with large active layer area of 1 cm2, while also showing promising thermal stability. This study provides a new scope of processing P3HT based polymer solar cells by using non-halogenated solvents, which is compatible and has great promise for future applications.

Abstract:Laboratory‐scale all‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs) have exhibited remarkable power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) exceeding 19%. However, the utilization of hazardous solvents and nonvolatile liquid additives poses challenges for eco‐friendly commercialization, necessitating the trade‐off between device efficiency and operation stability. Herein, we propose an innovative approach based on isomerized solid additive engineering, employing volatile dithienothiophene (DTT) isomers to modulate intermolecular interactions and facilitate molecular stacking within the photoactive layers. Through elucidating the underlying principles of the DTT‐induced polymer assembly on a molecular level, we achieve a PCE of 18.72% for devices processed with environmentally benign solvents, ranking it among the highest record values for eco‐friendly all‐PSCs. Significantly, such superiorities of the DTT‐isomerized strategy afford excellent compatibility with large‐area blade‐coating techniques, offering a promising pathway for industrial‐scale manufacturing of PSCs. Moreover, these devices demonstrate enhanced thermal stability with a promising extrapolated T80 lifetime of 14000 h, further bolstering their potential for sustainable technological advancements. Abstract:Simultaneous enhancement of open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, and fill factor in highly efficient polymer solar cells by incorporating an alcohol/water-soluble conjugated polymer as cathode interlayer is domonstrated. When combined with a low-bandgap polymer PTB7 as the electron donor material, the power efficiency of the devices is improved to a certified 8.370%. Due to the drastic improvement in efficiency and easy utilization, this method opens new opportunities for PSCs from various material systems to improve towards 10% efficiency.

Abstract:The power conversion efficiency of organic solar cells (OSCs) is exceeding 20%, an advance in which morphology optimization has played a significant role. It is generally accepted that the processing solvent (or solvent mixture) can help optimize morphology, impacting the OSC efficiency. Here we develop OSCs that show strong tolerance to a range of processing solvents, with all devices delivering high power conversion efficiencies around 19%. By investigating the solution states, the film formation dynamics and the characteristics of the processed films both experimentally and computationally, we identify the key factors that control morphology, that is, the interactions between the side chains of the acceptor materials and the solvent as well as the interactions between the donor and acceptor materials. Our work provides new understanding on the long-standing question of morphology control and effective guides to design OSC materials towards practical applications, where green solvents are required for large-scale processing.

Abstract:Polymer solar cells (PSCs) with remarkable power conversion efficiency and processability have been widely reported; however, most devices are processed using halogenated solvents under an inert atmosphere and require post-treatment to achieve optimal film morphology. In this manuscript, we developed efficient PSCs by combining a wide-bandgap conjugated polymer P2F-EHp and non-fullerene acceptors of IT-4F and IT-4Cl, which can be processed with non-chlorinated toluene:o-xylene co-solvent. It is interesting to note that a device based on IT-4Cl presented impressive photovoltaic performance with a power conversion efficiency of about 12%, which does not require post-treatment of solvent vapor annealing. The detailed investigation of film morphology by grazing incidence X-ray scattering and resonant soft X-ray scattering demonstrated that the co-solvent appeared to assist the manipulation of crystal coherent lengths and effectively decrease the phase separation of the corresponding blend films. Of particular importance is that this material system is compatible with the low-cost blade-coating technique using toluene:o-xylene co-solvent and can be processed under ambient conditions without post-treatment. A remarkable power conversion efficiency of 10.1% was achieved by blade-coating the P2F-EHp:IT-4F:IT-4Cl in air, which is slightly higher than that of 9.94% obtained from the spin-coating device processed in nitrogen. The results indicated that this material system is a promising candidate for constructing efficient PSCs toward practical applications.

Abstract:Organic solar cells based on a typical DPP polymer were systematically optimized by a solvent swelling assisted sequential deposition process. We investigated the influence of solvent swelling on the morphology and structure order of the swollen film and the resultant device performance. Morphological and structural characterization confirmed the realization of ideal bulk heterojunctions using a suitable swelling solvent. A trilayered morphology was also found with the conjugated polymer concentrated bottom layer, PC71BM concentrated top layer, and interpenetrated networks of donor and acceptor in the middle by solvent swelling instead of thermal annealing in the sequential solution processing method. We proposed a simple strategy to optimize the sequential deposition fabricated devices by tuning the concentration of the PC71BM solution instead of thermal annealing. The best device showed a PCE of 7.59% with a Voc of 0.61 V, Jsc of 17.95 mA/cm(2), and FF of 69.6%, which is the highest reported efficiency for devices fabricated by a sequential processing method and among the best results for DPP polymers.
Revealing the underlying solvent effect on film morphology in high-efficiency organic solar cells through combined ex situ and in situ observations

Abstract:The morphological features and the film formation processes in high-performance donor–acceptor binary photovoltaic blends cast from three representative solvents are carefully investigated and analyzed. The PM6:L8-BO system shows a very significant efficiency change on varying the solvent from chloroform (CF) to chlorobenzene (CB) and o -xylene (XY), whereas the PM6:eC9 system shows limited influence of the solvent used. Ex situ characterization studies have revealed that CB and XY cause too-pronounced phase separation for PM6:L8-BO. In contrast, PM6:eC9 films display only slightly enhanced phase segregation in CB films and even better mixing in XY-processed films. The in situ observations further reveal that the PM6 aggregation-dominated stage during film formation is longer for the eC9 system than for L8-BO, effectively suppressing the separation of donors and acceptors. PM6 is found to be highly miscible with the acceptors when processed from XY. The ex situ analysis results correlate well with the device performance and are finely explained by the in situ and miscibility study. Furthermore, an excellent device efficiency of 19.10% (verified 18.77%) is achieved using a ternary design for XY-enabled organic solar cells (OSCs) with PTQ10, while the corresponding blade coating devices present an excellent PCE of 18.25%. Thereby, this work provides a clear understanding of film morphology formation and enables the realization of high-performance non-halogenated solvent-processed OSCs.

Abstract:In recent years, the emergence of high‐efficiency non‐fullerene acceptors (NFAs) has pushed the power conversion efficiency (PCE) beyond 19% in organic solar cells (OSCs). For solution processing of the photoactive layers, the study of solvent properties on device performance has become a hot research topic towards up‐scaling. Here, we reveal the key roles of balancing solvent polarity and drying kinetics for processing of small molecular NFAs towards high performance organic solar cells. We demonstrate that the synergistic effect of solvent polarity and drying kinetics significantly affects the multi‐length scale morphology of solid films and photovoltaic performance. Furthermore, the self‐assembly of NFAs in solution and the resulting thin film microstructures induced by electrostatic interactions with polarized additives are even more sensitive to the solvent polarity and drying kinetics. Finally, the optimized devices achieve an outstanding PCE of 18.54% by fine tuning the microstructure with polar solvent and fast drying kinetics to form improved molecular packing and structure size. Our work provides a novel view and deeper insights into the general selection rules of solvents towards solution processing of high‐performance non‐fullerene organic solar cells. Note that P3HT:O-IDTBR based devices processed with these non-halogenated solvents exhibit an impressive power conversion efficiency of 7.1% with a high fill factor of 75.09% on a device area of 0.05 cm2, and the efficiency remained 6.89% even in a device with large active layer area of 1 cm2 with promising thermal stability. It is also noted that efficient PSCs consisting of P2F-EHp and non-fullerene acceptors of IT-4F and IT-4Cl were developed via optimizing non-halogenated toluene:o-xylene co-solvent. The detailed investigation of film morphology demonstrated that the co-solvent appeared to assist the manipulation of crystal coherent lengths and effectively decrease the phase separation of the corresponding blend films. Of particular importance is that this material system is compatible with the low-cost blade-coating technique and can be processed under ambient conditions without post-treatment. A remarkable power conversion efficiency of 10.1% was achieved by blade-coating the P2F-EHp:IT-4F:IT-4Cl blends in air. The results indicated that using non-halogenated solvents is a promising candidate for constructing efficient PSCs toward practical applications.
