Abstract:A short history for the observation of the CS-solitons in a transitional boundary layer is described . Both experimental and theoretical results show the existence of CS-solitons in a transitional and fully-developed turbulent boundary layer.

Abstract:Evolution of Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) in a flat plate boundary layer transition induced by the wake of a circular cylinder is investigated. Both hydrogen bubble visualization and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques are used. It is found that downstream of the cylinder, the disturbance in the boundary layer experiences a fast growth followed by a slow decay in the transition. Lagrangian coherent structures are revealed by qualitative hydrogen bubble visualizations and quantitative finite-time Lyapunov exponents (FTLE) fields derived from the PIV data. The evolution of the LCS is considered from the very beginning of the transition up to when the boundary layer becomes fully developed turbulent flow. The mean convection velocity and average inclination angle of the LCS are first extracted from the FTLE fields. The streamwise length of the low-speed streaks seems to increase, while their spanwise distance decreases in the boundary layer transition. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the PIV data shows that low-speed streaks associated with the hairpin vortices and hairpin packets are the dominant coherent structures close to the wall in the transitional and turbulent boundary layer. The POD modes also reveal a variety of scales in the turbulent boundary layer. Moreover, it is found that large-scale coherent structures can modulate the amplitude of the small-scale ones.

Abstract:Transition in regular K-regime of boundary layer is studied. The features of the long streak that is considered as a form of soliton/like coherent structure (CS-soliton) are investigated briefly. The experiment shows that the breakdown of long streak is generated by chain of ring-like vortices.

Abstract:Dark soliton excitations are shown to exist in single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). At first, the nonlinear effective interatomic potential and the difference equation for longitudinal lattice displacement are obtained for the SWCNTs by expanding Brenner's many-body potential in a Taylor series up to fourth-order terms. Then using a multi-scale method, for short wavelength lattice excitations the equation of motion of lattice is reduced to the cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation. Finally, the dark soliton solutions and relevant excitations in the SWCNTs with subsonic velocity are discussed.

Abstract:A variable separation approach is used to obtain localized coherent structures in a generalized (2+1)-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger system. Applying a special Bäcklund transformation and introducing arbitrary functions of the seed solutions, the abundance of the localized structures of this system are derived. By selecting the arbitrary functions appropriately, some special types of localized exitations such as dromions, dromion lattice, peakons, breathers and instantons are constructed.

Abstract:The nonlinear equation governing both the nonpropagating soliton and kink soliton in a channel with slowly varying depth of water has been derived using the perturbation method of multiple scales. Both nonpropagating soliton and kink soliton solutions for the special case of a mildly sloping channel have been given. The effects of the surface tension of water on solitons have been taken into account. The results obtained show that the two types of solitons always move slowly toward the shallow end of the channel with uniform accelerations, and the soliton's average drift velocities as well as accelerations are proportional to the channel slope and slightly reduced by the surface tension.

Abstract:Evolution of coherent vortical structures (CVSs) in shock wave/turbulent boundary-layer interactions (SWBLIs) is a fundamental yet relatively unexplored physical problem. A direct insight into this issue can help understand the SWBLI phenomenon from a more microcosmic perspective and provide new experimental results to the community of high-resolution numerical simulation. Thus, ice-cluster planar laser scattering technique is applied to acquire high spatiotemporal resolution images of the turbulent boundary-layer. Two-dimensional slices (2DS) of CVSs, from which statistical information can be acquired, are extracted by a machine-learning based method. Finally, by comparing features of 2DS-CVSs in the pre-separation zone and the post-reattachment zone, the evolution of CVSs in SWBLI is analyzed. Published by AIP Publishing.

Abstract:The process for the formation of the streamwise vestex in a transitional boundary layer is described. A new instability of the vortex tube has been found which can be used to describe the formation of the streamwise vortices. To the author's knowledge,the present results have not been reported before.

Qualitative Theory of Dynamical Systems

Abstract:Studying the transformation mechanisms of soliton solutions of some high-dimensional equations can aid in comprehending the physical phenomena of the relevant nonlinear wave interactions. Therefore, the transitions and mechanisms of nonlinear waves in the (2+1)-dimensional sine-Gordon and (2+1)-dimensional modified Boussinesq equations are investigated for the first time by means of characteristic line and phase shift analysis, and the dynamic behavior of various nonlinear transformed waves is analyzed. Firstly, we derive the N-soliton solution by applying the Hirota bilinear method, from which the breather solution is constructed by changing the parameters into a complex form in pairs. In addition, via the characteristic-line analysis, we present the mechanism for the transformation of the breather solution, which is composed of the nonlinear superposition of a solitary wave and periodic wave. When the characteristic lines of the two parts are parallel, we find that various transformed nonlinear wave structures can be obtained, such as M-type solitons, oscillating M-type solitons, multi-peak solitons, quasi-sine waves and so on. Finally, we demonstrate that the geometric properties of the characteristic lines vary with time essentially resulting in the time-varying properties of nonlinear waves, which have never been found in (1+1)-dimensional systems. Overall, the study of breath-wave transitions in the (2+1)-dimensional sine-Gordon equation and the modified Boussinesq equation provides valuable insights into the bahavior of nonlinear systems and wave propagation.

Abstract:Multiple solitons in a water trough resonator are observed to organize into some ordered and symmetrical one-dimensional patterns that can exhibit spatiotemporal oscillations at certain excitations of the system. Experimental details including the ordering rules for the generations of stable multisoliton chains are described, and the phenomena are numerically simulated with the parametrically driven, damped nonlinear Schrodinger equation.

Abstract:Some new features of parametrically excited single and double standing solitons in a rectangular water trough are revealed experimentally, including the periodical reflections of a soliton near an end wall of the trough and the existence of the "mirror effect" at the boundaries as well as the further study of the collision dynamics of two like polarity solitons. On the basis of these results, a concept of a virtual soliton is proposed.

Abstract:Highlights • The N-solitons and breathers are obtained theoretically. • The transformation mechanism of breathers is analyzed systematically. • The asymptotic relations between quasi-periodic waves and solitons are constructed. • A novel characteristic line method studying quasi-periodic waves is introduced. A (3+1)-dimensional generalized Calogero–Bogoyavlenskii–Schiff equation describing many nonlinear phenomena in fluid dynamics and plasma physics is considered. The N -solitons and breathers are obtained by basing on its Hirota's bilinear form and taking the complex conjugate condition on parameters of N -solitons. What is more, breathers can be transformed into a series of nonlinear localized waves by the mechanism of breather transformation. Then through the multi-dimensional Riemann-theta function and the bilinear method, the high-dimensional complex three-periodic wave solutions are constructed systematically, which are the generalization of one-periodic wave and two-periodic wave solutions. By a limiting procedure, the asymptotic relations between the quasi-periodic waves and solitons are strictly established. Additionally, a novel analytical method of characteristic line is introduced to analyze statistically the dynamical characteristics of the quasi-periodic waves. The analytical method employed in this paper can be further extended to investigate the other complex high-dimensional nonlinear integrable equations. Abstract:The critical instability of the hydrodynamic solitons from a free and stationary surface has been systemically measured for various depths, breadths, and the ratio of the mixture solution of glycerin and water. The experiment shows that increasing the depth and breadth, and decreasing the ratio of the mixture mainly lead to the decreasing of the onset exciting acceleration. The experimental results have been qualitatively explained by linear stability theory in which the horizontal wave number has to be quantized due to the finite boundary of the small-aspect-ratio container.

Abstract:The study of laminar unsteady boundary layer flows is essential for understanding the transition from laminar to turbulent flow, as well as the origins of turbulence. However, finding solutions to this phenomenon poses significant challenges. In this study, we introduce a novel method that employs a similarity transformation to convert the two-dimensional unsteady laminar boundary layer equations into a single partial differential equation with constant coefficients. By applying this transformation, we successfully derive similarity solutions for flat plate boundary layer flow, expressed in terms of Kummer functions. For convergent boundary layer flow, we derive an approximate analytical solution that includes both shock wave and soliton wave solutions. The superposition of these solutions provides evidence for the existence of solitons or soliton-like coherent structures (SCS) within boundary layers. Additionally, this paper explores two- and three-dimensional laminar flows, as well as three-dimensional turbulent flow equations, revealing that they all incorporate third-order derivatives with respect to spatial coordinates. This finding suggests that all viscous fluid motions have the potential to exhibit solitons/like coherent structures (SCS).

Abstract:We investigated surface dark solitons (SDSs) at the interface between a self-defocusing nonlocal nonlinear medium and a linear medium, both theoretically and experimentally. We demonstrate that fundamental and higher-order SDSs can exist when the linear refractive index of the self-defocusing medium is much greater than that of the linear medium. The fundamental and second-order solitons are observed at the interface between air and a weakly absorbing liquid.

Abstract:The systematical experiments were done to measure the onset instability of nonpropagating hydrodynamic solitons for various depths, breadths and the ratio of the mixture solution of the glycerin and water. The experiments show that increasing the depth and breadth and decreasing the ratio of the mixture mainly lead to the decreasing of the onset exciting acceleration. The experimental results are qualitatively consistent with the linear stability theory in which the horizontal wave number is quantized due to the finite boundary of the small-aspect-ratio container.
A bound state attractor in optical turbulence

Abstract:We study numerically the nonintegrable dynamics of coherent, solitonic, nonlinear waves, in a spatially nonlocal nonlinear Schrodinger equation relevant to realistic modelling of optical systems: the Schrodinger-Helmholtz equation. We observe a single oscillating, coherent solitary wave emerging from a variety of initial conditions. Using the direct scattering transform of the (integrable) cubic nonlinear Schrodinger equation, we find that this structure is a bound state, comprising of a primary and secondary soliton whose amplitudes oscillate out of phase. We interpret this as the solitons periodically exchanging mass. We observe this bound state self-organising from a state of incoherent turbulence, and from solitonic structures launched into the system. When a single (primary) solitonic structure is launched, a resonance process between it and waves in the system generates the secondary soliton, resulting in the bound state. Further, when two solitons are initially launched, we show that they can merge if their phases are synchronised when they collide. When the system is launched from a turbulent state comprised of many initial solitons, we propose that the bound state formation is preceded a sequence of binary collisions, in which the mass is transferred on average from the weak soliton to the strong one, with occasional soliton mergers. Both processes lead to increasingly stronger and fewer dominant solitons. The final state -- a solitary double-solitonic bound state surrounded by weakly nonlinear waves -- is robust and ubiquitous. We propose that for nonlocal media, it is a more typical statistical attractor than a single-soliton attractor suggested in previous literature.

Abstract:A coupled (2 + 1)-dimensional variable coefficient Ginzburg–Landau equation is studied. By virtue of the modified Hirota bilinear method, the bright one-soliton solution of the equation is derived. Some phenomena of soliton propagation are analyzed by setting different dispersion terms. The influences of the corresponding parameters on the solitons are also discussed. The results can enrich the soliton theory, and may be helpful in the manufacture of optical devices.
