Abstract:Evolution of Lagrangian coherent structures (LCS) in a flat plate boundary layer transition induced by the wake of a circular cylinder is investigated. Both hydrogen bubble visualization and particle image velocimetry (PIV) techniques are used. It is found that downstream of the cylinder, the disturbance in the boundary layer experiences a fast growth followed by a slow decay in the transition. Lagrangian coherent structures are revealed by qualitative hydrogen bubble visualizations and quantitative finite-time Lyapunov exponents (FTLE) fields derived from the PIV data. The evolution of the LCS is considered from the very beginning of the transition up to when the boundary layer becomes fully developed turbulent flow. The mean convection velocity and average inclination angle of the LCS are first extracted from the FTLE fields. The streamwise length of the low-speed streaks seems to increase, while their spanwise distance decreases in the boundary layer transition. Proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) of the PIV data shows that low-speed streaks associated with the hairpin vortices and hairpin packets are the dominant coherent structures close to the wall in the transitional and turbulent boundary layer. The POD modes also reveal a variety of scales in the turbulent boundary layer. Moreover, it is found that large-scale coherent structures can modulate the amplitude of the small-scale ones.

Abstract:The evolution of coherent structures in a flat plate boundary layer transition induced by the cylinder wake is investigated using the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique. The finite-time Lyapunov exponent (FTLE), which characterizes the amount of stretching about the flow trajectory, is used to extract the Lagrangian coherent structures. It is revealed that secondary vortex is induced by the cylinder wake vortices in the near wall region,which would evolve into hairpin vortex as it convects downstream. The subsequent evolvement of the hairpin vortex, characterized by the regeneration of offspring hairpin vortex upstream of it, leads to the appearance of the hairpin packet and the boundary layer finally reaches a turbulent state.

Abstract:Complete first-mode oblique breakdowns under wall transpirations in a Mach 2 flat-plate boundary layer are investigated by direct numerical simulations. The parameters of oblique waves are determined by linear stability analysis, while air transpiration is modeled by a wall-injection boundary condition. Wall transpiration with various blowing ratios is imposed at two distinct streamwise regions to assess its effects. When wall transpiration is located in the linear and early nonlinear region, the transition shifts upstream with increasing blowing ratios. This promotion effect arises from the destabilization of the oblique mode, steady vortex mode and higher-harmonic modes. Wall transpiration also leads to reduced skin friction and heat transfer in the transpiration and downstream turbulent regions. Through integral analysis, the impacts of transpiration on the generation mechanisms of skin friction and heat transfer are gained. The reduced skin friction and heat transfer in the transpiration region are mainly attributed to the amplified negative contributions from mean convection. In the turbulent region, the reduction of skin friction can be attributed to the heightened negative contributions from mean convection and the diminished positive contributions from turbulent convection. Concurrently, heat transfer experiences a decrease as a consequence of reduced positive contributions from spatial development and augmented negative contributions from mean convection. When wall transpiration is located in the late nonlinear region, its impacts resemble those observed when transpiration is located in the linear and early nonlinear region. However, the transition-promoting effect weakens, and the heat-transfer reduction effect becomes more pronounced.

Abstract:One mechanism by which laminar flow becomes turbulence is through the instability of vortex interaction. The nonlinear evolution of the interactions between the Λ-vortex and the secondary closed vortex has been investigated. This nonlinear instability process leads to some fundamental changes in the topology of flows. Experimental observations are presented here showing the formation of a chain of ring-like vortices, which generate high-frequency spikes on time traces in a transitional boundary layer.

Abstract:This numerical study focuses on the coherent structures and bypass transition mechanism of the Stokes boundary layer in the intermittently turbulent regime. In particular, the initial disturbance is produced by a temporary roughness element that is removed immediately after triggering a two-dimensional vortex tube under an inflection-point instability. The present study reveals a complete scenario of self-induced motion of a vortex tube after rollup from the boundary layer. The trajectory of the vortex tube is reasonably described based on the Helmholtz point-vortex equation. The three-dimensional transition of the vortex tube is attributed to the Crow instability, which leads to a sinusoidal disturbance that eventually evolves into a ring-like structure, especially for the weaker vortex. Further investigation demonstrates that three-dimensional or quasi-three-dimensional vortex perturbations in the free stream play a critical role in the boundary layer transition through a bypass mechanism, which is featured by the non-modal and explosive transient growth of the subsequent boundary layer instabilities. This transition scenario is found to be analogous to the oblique transition in the steady boundary layer, both of which are characterised by the formation of streaks, rollup of hairpin-like vortices and burst into turbulent spots. In addition, the streamwise propagation of turbulent spots is discussed in detail. To shed more light on the nature of the intermittently turbulent Stokes boundary layer, a conceptual model is proposed for the periodically self-sustaining mechanism of the turbulent spots based on the present numerical results and experimental evidence reported in the literature.

Abstract:Direct numerical simulations are conducted to study the receptivity and transition mechanisms in a solitary wave boundary layer developing over randomly organized wave-like bottom topography. The boundary layer flow shows a selective response to broadband perturbations from the bottom, and develops streamwise-elongated streaks. When the streaks reach high amplitudes, they indirectly amplify streamwise-elongated vortices through modulating small-scale fluctuations and pressure fields. These stronger vortices in turn stir the boundary layer more effectively and further intensify streaks via the lift-up mechanism. This nonlinear feedback loop increases the sensitivity of the boundary layer to the roughness level and yields dramatic variations among cases sharing the same Reynolds number with differing roughness height. Three different local breakdown scenarios are observed depending on the amplitude of the streaks: (i) two-dimensional wave instabilities in the regions with weak streaks; (ii) inner shear-layer instabilities in the regions with moderate-amplitude streaks; (iii) rapidly growing outer shear-layer instabilities in the regions with highly elevated high-amplitude streaks. Inner instabilities have the slowest growth rate among all transition paths, which confirms the previous predictions on the stabilising role of moderate-amplitude streaks (Önder & Liu, J. Fluid. Mech., vol. 896, 2020, A20).

Effect of streaks on hypersonic boundary layer instability

Abstract:Hypersonic boundary layers exhibit diverse transition pathways, influenced by various flow conditions and environments. Non-modal mechanisms, such as the lift-up effect, are recognized as pivotal contributors to transition, particularly over complex geometries like rough walls or blunted forebodies. In this study, we investigate the impact of steady streaks on the transition to turbulence in hypersonic boundary layers. Streaky baseflows are generated using optimal disturbances at the inlet, forming the basis for our analysis. We conduct linearized direct numerical simulations on these baseflows at Mach number $M_\infty=6.0$, using white noise forcing to trigger instabilities. An efficient extension of the SPOD method is applied to identify and track the instabilities originating from the broadband forcing on the 3D non-homogeneous baseflows. The results highlight the dominant influence of low-frequency first-mode instabilities and streak-associated instabilities in the linear regime. These findings emphasize the critical role of streaks in hypersonic boundary layer transition and provide valuable insights into this complex phenomenon.

Abstract:A bypass transition scenario in a wind-stress driven aqueous flow is analysed using a temporally developing boundary layer model with accelerating surface drift velocity. The parameters of the model are selected to mimic a wave-tank experiment with a reference wind speed of 5 m/s. To study the boundary layer processes in isolation, a flat free surface is adapted, which inhibits the initiation of waves. First, preferred initial perturbations to which the boundary layer is the most sensitive are identified using linear non-normal growth theory. These perturbations are arranged as streamwise-constant vortex pairs located adjacent to the free surface. Subsequently, direct numerical simulations are initialized with these optimal perturbations and streamwise streaks are generated. High-speed streaks penetrate into deeper water layers and undergo sinuous instabilities reminiscent of the instabilities developing on low-speed streaks in wall-bounded flows. Streak instabilities induce lateral undulations at the free surface, which closely resemble the dye patterns before the onset of waves in wind-wave-tank experiments. The present analysis provides a theoretical background for these experimental observations.

Abstract:The small vortex generation is a key issue of the mechanism for late flow transition and turbulence generation. It was widely accepted that small length vortices were generated by large vortex breakdown. According to our recent DNS, we find that the hairpin vortex structure is very stable and never breaks down to small pieces. On the other hand, we recognize that there are strong positive spikes besides the ring neck in the spanwise direction. The strongly positive spikes are caused by second sweeps which are generated by perfectly circular and perpendicularly standing vortex rings. The second sweep brings energy from the invisid region downdraft to the bottom of the boundary layers, which generates high shear layers around the positive <a class="link-external link-http" href="http://spikes.Since" rel="external noopener nofollow">this http URL</a> the high shear layer is not stable, all small length scales (turbulence) are generated around high shear layers especially near the wall surface (bottom of boundary layers). Abstract:The effects of wall-normal vibration on bypass transition in a boundary-layer flow over a flat plate with roughness elements in the form of circular cylinders are investigated using direct numerical simulations (DNS), linear Floquet analyses and dynamic mode decompositions (DMD). The vibration of the plate strengthens the streamwise vorticity, consequently enhancing the velocity streaks and reducing the critical Reynolds number for transition. A map is constructed to identify the coupling effect of the vibration amplitude and Reynolds number on transition. Among all investigated combinations of height and diameter of roughness, the critical Reynolds numbers at different vibration amplitude $A$ can be unified by a scaling function of $(1-10A)$ . Two instability modes are identified in the vibration-induced transition process: a wake mode immediately downstream of the roughness, related to the inviscid Kelvin–Helmholtz instability of the wall-normal shear in the wake; and a streak mode, in response to the spanwise shear of the streaky flow, occurring further downstream. The first one results in the generation of central hairpin vortices which then feed the second one. Further development of the streak instability leads to two arrays of hairpin vortices. Results from linear Floquet analyses and DMD further confirm the two modes of instability observed in DNS. A quantitative study suggests that the amplification of vibration-induced disturbance by the base shear dominates the production of streamwise vorticity and subsequently the hairpin vortices.
Mixed mode transition in boundary layers: Helical instability

Abstract:Recent (Bose \& Durbin, \textit{Phys. Rev. Fluids}, 1, 073602, 2016) direct numerical simulations (DNS) of adverse- and zero-pressure-gradient boundary layers beneath moderate levels of free stream turbulence ($Tu$ $\le 2\%$) revealed a \textit{mixed mode} transition regime, intermediate between orderly and bypass routes. In this regime, the amplitudes of the Klebanoff streaks and instability waves are similar, and potentially can interact. Three-dimensional visualizations of transitional eddies revealed a helical pattern, quite distinct from the sinuous and varicose forms seen in pure bypass transition. This raises the fundamental question of whether the helical pattern could be attributed to a previously unknown instability mode. Two-dimensional stability analyses are performed herein for base flows extracted from DNS flow fields. The three-dimensional structure of the eigenfunction of the most unstable mode indeed reveals a helical pattern. These instability modes are obtained significantly earlier than helical structures are seen in flow visualizations, even for innocuous base flow structures. It is inferred that the instability mode is the underlying cause of helical patterns that emerge in the transition region. The streak configuration leading to the formation of the helical mode instability is different from those leading to sinuous and varicose modes in previous studies of pure bypass transition. Thus, the mixed mode precursor is the distinctive cause.

Abstract:We extend the vortex-surface field (VSF), a Lagrangian-based structure-identification method, to study the structural evolution in Klebanoff-type boundary-layer transition. The VSF is constructed from the instantaneous vorticity fields in a series of sliding windows at different times and streamwise locations using the boundary-constraint method. The visualization of VSF isosurfaces displays the Lagrangian-like evolution of vortex surfaces consisting of vortex lines. The near-wall VSF isosurfaces evolve from wall-parallel planar vortex surfaces through a train of hairpin-like structures into turbulent spots. In the inception of turbulent spots, the train of hairpin-like bulges of vortex surfaces induces sinuous spanwise perturbations on the adjacent flank of lower wavy vortex surfaces, and then triggers the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in the spanwise direction. The resultant sinuous distortion of vortex surfaces propagates in the spanwise direction, which can lead to the mass production of small-scale, skewed hairpin-like structures and the rapid lateral growth of turbulent spots. The streaky and hairpin-like structures have strong interactions in the present Klebanoff-type transition. On the other hand, these signature structures can be interpreted as different evolutionary geometries of the same set of VSF isosurfaces at different times and spatial regions, rather than considering them as two different elementary structures visualized by different structure-identification methods. Furthermore, the quantified distortion of near-wall vortex surfaces in the lateral growth of young turbulent spots is highly correlated to the surge of the skin-friction coefficient in the transition.

Abstract:Cross-flow transition over a delta wing is systematically studied in a Mach 6.5 hypersonic wind tunnel, employing the Rayleigh scattering flow visualisation, high-speed schlieren and fast-response pressure sensors. Direct numerical simulations and analysis based on linear stability theory under the same flow conditions are applied to analyse the transition mechanism. Three unstable modes are identified: the travelling cross-flow instabilities, the second mode and the low-frequency waves. It is shown that the travelling cross-flow vortices first appear in the cross-flow region near the leading edge of the model. These vortices can modulate the mean profile of the flow, which benefits the growth of second mode. A phase-locked interaction mechanism transfers energy from the cross-flow instabilities to the high-frequency second mode, leading to amplification at the expense of the cross-flow instability. As the second mode grows to a critical amplitude, it triggers a -type secondary instability within a similar frequency range, which introduces secondary finger-like structures connecting to the cross-flow vortex. It is further found that the generation of these finger-like structures is related to the expansion and compression of the second mode. These finger vortices further evolve along the streamwise direction into low-frequency waves and corresponding hairpin-like structures that finally trigger turbulence. An interaction mechanism likely exists between the secondary instability and the low-frequency waves, since their phase speeds are approaching each other. These observations of the interaction mechanism are consistent with those of previous studies on hypersonic boundary layers (Zhang et al., Phys. Fluids, vol. 32 (7), 2020, 071702; Li et al., Phys. Fluids, vol. 32 (5), 2020, 051701).

Abstract:Characteristics of coherent vortical structures in a compressible turbulent boundary layer are statistically analyzed by means of direct numerical simulation of the compressible Navier-Stokes equations for Mach number M = 2 and Reynolds number Re-theta approximate to 1000 based on the inlet momentum thickness. It is found that a large variety of hairpin-like and cane-like vortical structures exist in the boundary layer and the most popular structure is the cane-like one. The injection and sweep events contribute a major proportion of the total Reynolds stress. This study indicates structural similarities with the incompressible case. Moreover, the length scales of coherent structures in the streamwise and spanwise directions increase with the distance from the wall. The inclination angle of coherent vortical structures with respect to the streamwise direction increases from the sublayer to the buffer layer and then decreases from the buffer layer to the wake region.
Evolution of material surfaces in the temporal transition in channel flow

Abstract:We report a Lagrangian study on the evolution of material surfaces in the Klebanoff-type temporal transitional channel flow. Based on the Eulerian velocity field from the direct numerical simulation, a backward-particle-tracking method is applied to solve the transport equation of the Lagrangian scalar field, and then the isosurfaces of the Lagrangian field can be extracted as material surfaces in the evolution. Three critical issues for Lagrangian investigations on the evolution of coherent structures using material surfaces are addressed. First, the initial scalar field is uniquely determined based on the proposed criteria, so that the initial material surfaces can be approximated as vortex surfaces, and remain invariant in the initial laminar state. Second, the evolution of typical material surfaces initially from different wall distances is presented, and then the influential material surface with the maximum deformation is identified. Large vorticity variations with the maximum curvature growth of vortex lines are also observed on this surface. Moreover, crucial events in the transition can be characterized in a Lagrangian approach by conditional statistics on the material surfaces. Finally, the influential material surface, which is initially a vortex surface, is demonstrated as a surrogate of the vortex surface before significant topological changes of vortical structures. Therefore, this material surface can be used to elucidate the continuous temporal evolution of vortical structures in transitional wall-bounded flows in a Lagrangian perspective. The evolution of the influential material surface is divided into three stages: the formation of a triangular bulge from an initially disturbed streamwise-spanwise sheet, rolling up of the vortex sheet near the bulge ridges with the vorticity intensification and the generation and evolution of signature hairpin-like structures with self-induced dynamics of vortex filaments. © 2016 Cambridge University Press.
Oblique-mode Breakdown in Hypersonic and High-Enthalpy Boundary Layers over a Blunt Cone

Abstract:The nonlinear analyses of the hypersonic and high-enthalpy boundary-layer transition had received little attention compared with the widely-studied linear instabilities. In this work, the oblique-mode breakdown, as one of the most available transition mechanisms, is studied using the nonlinear parabolized stability equations (NPSE) with consideration of the thermal-chemical non-equilibrium effects. The flow over a blunt cone is computed at a free-stream Mach-number of 15. The rope-like structures and the spontaneous radiation of sound waves are observed in the schlieren-like picture. It is also illustrated that the disturbances of the species mass and vibrational temperature near the wall are mainly generated by the product term of the wall-normal velocity disturbance and the mean-flow gradient. In comparison to the CPG flow, the TCNE effects destabilize the second mode and push upstream the N factor envelope. The higher growth rate of the oblique wave leads to stronger growth of the streamwise vortices and harmonic waves.
A Evolution Path of Irregularity in a Transitional Boundary Layer

Abstract:Determination and irregularity are considered as main features of turbulence. How can we concentrate these two conflict aspects into one body, i.e., turbulence? The evolution and growth of the irregularity in a transitional boundary layer are studied experimentally. The results show that the irregularity originally comes from the non-periodic variations under initial conditions. The linear and nonlinear effects in a boundary layer amplify the initial noise and then the irregularity is developed.
