Abstract:Significance While arising in theories in many branches of science, from particle physics to condensed matter and cosmology, stable three-dimensional topological solitons remained experimentally elusive until very recently. We now show that such solitons can be electrically and magnetically switched between states with the same or different Hopf indices. Richness and robustness of this switching promise technological applications in the new breeds of information displays and data storage devices, as well as may provide a test ground and new inspirations for the mathematical knot theory.
Classification of dark solitons via topological vector potentials

Abstract:Dark solitons are some of the most interesting nonlinear excitations and are considered to be the one-dimensional topological analogs of vortices. However, in contrast to their two-dimensional vortex counterparts, the topological characteristics of a dark soliton are far from fully understood because the topological charge defined according to the phase jump cannot reflect its essential property. Here, similar to the complex extension used in the exploration of the partition-function zeros to depict thermodynamic states, we extend the complex coordinate space to explore the density zeros of dark solitons. Surprisingly we find that these zeros constitute some pointlike magnetic fields, each of which has a quantized magnetic flux of elementary π. The corresponding vector potential fields demonstrate the topology of the Wess-Zumino term and can depict the essential characteristics of dark solitons. Then we classify the dark solitons according to the Euler characteristic of the topological manifold of the vector potential fields. Our study not only reveals the topological features of dark solitons but can also be applied to explore and identify new dark solitons with high topological complexity.

Abstract:We study the topological phase of bright soliton with arbitrary velocity under the self-steepening effect. Such topological phase can be described by the topological vector potential and effective magnetic field. We find that the point-like magnetic fields corresponds to the density peak of such bright solitons, where each elementary magnetic flux is {\pi}. Remarkably, we show that two bright solitons can generate an additional topological field due to the phase jump between them. Our research provided the possibility to use bright solitons to explore topological properties.

Abstract:Solitons in two-dimensional quantum field theory exhibit patterns of degeneracies and associated selection rules on scattering amplitudes. We develop a representation theory that captures these intriguing features of solitons. This representation theory is based on an algebra we refer to as the "strip algebra", $\textrm{Str}_{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{M})$, which is defined in terms of the non-invertible symmetry, $\mathcal{C},$ a fusion category, and its action on boundary conditions encoded by a module category, $\mathcal{M}$. The strip algebra is a $C^*$-weak Hopf algebra, a fact which can be elegantly deduced by quantizing the three-dimensional Drinfeld center TQFT, $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C}),$ on a spatial manifold with corners. These structures imply that the representation category of the strip algebra is also a unitary fusion category which we identify with a dual category $\mathcal{C}_{\mathcal{M}}^{*}.$ We present a straightforward method for analyzing these representations in terms of quiver diagrams where nodes are vacua and arrows are solitons and provide examples demonstrating how the representation theory reproduces known degeneracies and selection rules of soliton scattering. Our analysis provides the general framework for analyzing non-invertible symmetry on manifolds with boundary and applies both to the case of boundaries at infinity, relevant to particle physics, and boundaries at finite distance, relevant in conformal field theory or condensed matter systems.

Solitons with Self-induced Topological Nonreciprocity

Abstract:The nonlinear Schrodinger equation supports solitons -- self-interacting, localized states that behave as nearly independent objects. We exhibit solitons with self-induced nonreciprocal dynamics in a discrete nonlinear Schrodinger equation. This nonreciprocal behavior, dependent on soliton power, arises from the interplay between linear and nonlinear terms in the equations of motion. Initially stable at high power, solitons exhibit nonreciprocal instabilities as power decreases, leading to unidirectional acceleration and amplification. This behavior is topologically protected by winding numbers on the solitons' mean-field Hamiltonian and their stability matrix, linking nonlinear dynamics and point gap topology in non-Hermitian Hamiltonians.

Abstract:Topological phases and their topological features are enriched by the fundamental time-reversal, particle-hole, and chiral as well as crystalline symmetries. While one-dimensional (1D) generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) systems show various topological phenomena such as topological solitons and topological charge pumping, it remains unclear how such symmetry protects and relates such topological phenomena. Here we show that the generalized time-reversal, particle-hole, and chiral symmetry operators consistently explain not only the symmetry transformation properties between the ground states but also the topological features of the topological solitons in prototypical quasi-1D systems such as the SSH, Rice-Mele, and double-chain models. As a consequence, we classify generalized essential operators into three groups: Class I and class II operators connect ground states in between after spontaneous symmetry breaking while class III operators give the generalized particle-hole and chiral symmetries to ground states. Furthermore, class I operators endow the equivalence relation between topological solitons while class II and III operators do the particle-hole relations. Finally, we demonstrate three distinct types of topological charge pumping and soliton chirality from the viewpoint of class I, II, and III operators. We build a general framework to explore the topological features of the generalized 1D electronic system, which can be easily applied in various condensed matter systems as well as photonic crystal and cold atomic systems.

Revisiting the fermion-field nontopological solitons

Abstract:Nontopological fermionic solitons exist across a diverse range of particle physics models and have rich cosmological implications. This study establishes a general framework for calculating fermionic soliton profiles under arbitrary scalar potentials, utilizing relativistic mean field theory to accurately depict the interaction between the fermion condensate and the background scalar field. Within this framework, the conventional fermion bound states are revealed as a subset of fermionic solitons. In addition, we demonstrate how the analytical formulae in previous studies are derived as special cases of our algorithm, discussing the validity of such approximations. Furthermore, we explore the phenomenology of fermionic solitons, highlighting new formation mechanisms and evolution paths, and reconsidering the possibility of collapse into primordial black holes.

Abstract:Y.R. Shen Solitons are solitary waves, sometimes seen in water canals or as light pulses in optical fibers, that propagate for long distances without changing shape. This phenomenon is the result of a delicate balancing act between the tendency for waves to disperse and the nonlinear properties of the propagation medium. As a result of this interaction, the mathematical description of solitons can be highly complex. In his Perspective, Shen discusses a report in the same issue by Snyder and Mitchell that shows a much simpler way to mathematically approach solitons.
Composite Vector Solitons with Topological Charges and Their Stability Analysis

Abstract:The existence and stability properties of three-component vector solitons are studied. Linear stability analysis and numerical simulations show that when the power of vortex component is below a threshold, the fundamental component is stable, and the vortex components break up into dipole solitons; the dipole solitons originating from the vector solitons with total zero topological charges are very unique. While if the power of vortex components is higher than that threshold, all soliton components are unstable and break up into independent fundamental solitons. The instability of solitons with total zero topological charges is largely suppressed comparing to that of solitons with total nonzero topological charges.

Abstract:We studied the evolution of topological solitons in the space of its width d and the conjugated momenta l during Bloch oscillations. The unstable solitons are confined in a well with its boundary as four branches of a hyperbola, the stable solitons sit at the four branches of the hyperbola (d·l=28) which is in agreement with the generalized Heisenberg uncertainty principal Δd·Δl⩾Const. The generation, annihilation, and bifurcation of solitons is going on in the well. In studying the behavior of the nonlinear interaction parameter for the stable solitons, it is found that bright solitons and dark solitons alternatively come into action during the breakdown and revival of Bloch oscillations.
Solitonic symmetry beyond homotopy: Invertibility from bordism and noninvertibility from topological quantum field theory

Abstract:Solitonic symmetry has been believed to follow the homotopy-group classification of topological solitons. Here, we point out a more sophisticated algebraic structure when solitons of different dimensions coexist in the spectrum. We uncover this phenomenon in a concrete quantum field theory, the $4$d $\mathbb{C}P^1$ model. This model has two kinds of solitonic excitations, vortices and hopfions, which would follow two $U(1)$ solitonic symmetries according to homotopy groups. Nevertheless, we demonstrate the nonexistence of the hopfion $U(1)$ symmetry by evaluating the hopfion charge of vortex operators. We clarify that what conserves hopfion numbers is a non-invertible symmetry generated by 3d spin topological quantum field theories (TQFTs). Its invertible part is just $\mathbb{Z}_2$, which we recognize as a spin bordism invariant. Compared with the 3d $\mathbb{C}P^1$ model, our work suggests a unified description of solitonic symmetries and couplings to topological phases.

Abstract:In this paper, we study ends of complete gradient non-trivial Schouten solitons. Without any additional assumptions, we show the shrinking ones have finitely many ends, and the expanding ones are connected at infinity. We also provide information regarding the non-parabolicity of the ends in the shrinking setting, and on the behavior of the potential function and volume growth in the expanding case.

Abstract:In this report, the various 1D single soliton and multi-soliton solutions of the Sine-Gordon equation are explored. First the topological kink solitons and their properties for the Sine-Gordon, as well as the $\phi^{4}$ model are investigated. This includes energy and momentum conservation laws for both models, as well as static kinks and antikinks. The Bogomol'nyi equation and the importance of Lorentz invariance are also discussed. Then in the second half, the focus is on Sine-Gordon multi-kink solutions, which are found by a separation of variables method rather than using inverse scattering or Bäcklund transforms. These kink-kink and kink-antikink collisions are explained by considering topological charges and interaction energies. The special bound state dynamical breather soliton is obtained and properties such as the binding energy of the breather are presented. Following this, the Frenkel-Kontorova model is explored, leading to the discrete Sine-Gordon model and the introduction of discrete breathers.

New Routes to Solitons in Quasi One-Dimensional Conductors

Abstract:We collect evidences on existence of microscopic solitons, and their determining role in electronic processes of quasi-1D conductors. The ferroelectric charge ordering gives access to several types of solitons in conductivity and permittivity, and to solitons' bound pairs in optics - both in insulating and conducting cases of TMTTF and TMTSF subfamilies. The excursion to physics of conjugated polymers allows to suggest further experiments. Internal tunnelling in Charge Density Waves goes through the channel of "amplitude solitons", which correspond to the long sought quasi-particle - the spinon. The same experiment gives an access to the reversible reconstruction of the junction via spontaneous creation of a lattice of 2Pi solitons - a grid of dislocations. The individual 2Pi solitons have been visually captured in recent STM experiments. Junctions of organic and oxide conductors are anticipated to show similar effects of reconstruction.

Abstract:We investigate the existence and stability of two-dimensional (2D) solitons in the framework of the nonlinear fractional Schro center dot dinger equation (NLFSE) with focusing nonlinearity and a parity-time (PT) symmetric periodic potential. Numerical studies reveal that the fundamental, dipole, and localized vortex solitons exist in a semiinfinite band gap. The Le ' vy index (alpha) cannot change the phase transition point of the PT-symmetric periodic potential, but it affects the existence and stability of these solitons significantly. With the growth of the Le ' vy index, the stability regions become markedly wider for the fundamental, dipole solitons and vortex solitons with the topological charge of 2 (S=2). But for a unit topological charge (S=1), the vortex soliton cannot maintain its stability under the usual diffraction effect (alpha=2). The result shows that the fractional-order diffraction helps to stabilize the vortex solitons with S=1.

Abstract:We study the propagation of discrete solitons on chains of coupled optical waveguides where finite networks of waveguides are inserted at some points. By properly selecting the topology of these networks, it is possible to control the transmission of traveling solitons: we show here that inhomogeneous waveguide networks may be used as filters for soliton propagation. Our results provide a first step in the understanding of the interplay/competition between topology and nonlinearity for soliton dynamics in optical fibers.

Abstract:We use the Hopf mapping to construct a magnetic configuration consisting of closed field lines, each of which is linked with all the other ones. We obtain in this way a solution of the equations of magnetohydrodynamics of an ideal incompressible fluid with infinite conductivity, which describes a localized topological soliton.

Abstract:In this work, using binary Bose-Einstein condensate we propose a new type of topological insulator that does not explicitly use specially designed potential landscape, but instead utilizes spatially inhomogeneous Rabi coupling between two components, in the form of one- or two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) structure, combined with Zeeman splitting. Such Rabi lattices reveal the appearance of topologically nontrivial phases (including higher-order ones) controlled by spatial shift of the domains with enhanced coupling between condensates within unit cells of the structure, where localized topological states appear at the edges or in the corners of truncated Rabi lattice. We also show that the properties of edge states, their spatial localization, and location of their chemical potential within topological gap can be controlled by interatomic interactions that lead to formation of gap topological edge solitons bifurcating from linear edge states. Such solitons in condensates with inhomogeneous Rabi coupling appear as very robust nonlinear topological objects that do not require any threshold norm for their formation even in two-dimensional geometries, and that can exist in stable form for both attractive and repulsive interactions. Our results demonstrate considerable enhancement of stability of solitons in topological Rabi lattices in comparison with trivial Rabi lattices. They open new prospects for realization of topologically nontrivial phases by spatial engineering of coupling in multicomponent systems.
