Abstract:In this paper we describe a new and elegant approach for grafting polymer-silver nanoparticle composite via free radical mediated cationic photopolymerization on flexible biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate (BOPET) initiated by surface aryl layers. The photo-initiator i.e., 4 (dimethylamino) phenyl (DMA) was grafted on BOPET via in-situ, generation of diazonium salt from aromatic amine precursor and pure isoamyl nitrite. The photosensitizer, camphorquinone, was used to strip hydrogen from the DMA modified BOPET substrate to initiate photopolymerization in presence of monomers and silver salt. This efficient one step process is adopted to prepare hydrophilic polymers poly(polyglycidol)(PPGL)-Ag and poly(2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate)(PHEMA)-Ag nanocomposite films. We used X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to monitor the surface modification and silver polymer composite formation on BOPET substrate. Finally the antibacterial studies with E coli bacteria on these polymer-silver nanocomposite modified BOPET surface showed a strong bacteriostatic effect.
