Abstract:We fabricate an Ampere force based photonic crystal fiber (PCF) magnetic field sensor by bonding a PCF in-line modal interferometer (PCFMI) with an aluminum (Al) wire together. This sensor is very compact, cost-effective, temperature insensitive, highly stable over time and easy to be fabricated only including cleaving and splicing processes. An electrical current flowing through the Al wire in a perpendicular magnetic field can generate Ampere force to lead to the curvature of the Al wire and the PCF. As the cladding mode of the PCF with a large mode field diameter is very sensitive to the curvature, the average magnetic field sensing sensitivity can reach 32.4 pm/mT when 100 mA electrical current is applied with excellent repeatability. Higher sensitivity and a minimal detectable magnetic field of less than 0.1 mT can be realized by increasing the applied electrical current. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A magnetic field and electric current meter is proposed based on a differential twin receiving microfiber coupler (MC) sensor. The sensor is fabricated by bonding a MC and an aluminium (Al) wire together. With the small diameter of several micrometers, the output power at each port of the coupler shows high sensitivity to the distortion of Al wire from the Lorentz force induced by the magnetic field or the thermal expansion caused by the electric current. The ratio of the difference to the sum of the output signals from the two output ports can be used to eliminate the variation in the sensitivity. Using our proposed sensor, we measured a magnetic field sensitivity of ~0.0496 mT(-1), current sensitivity of ~1.0899 A(-1) without any magnetic field, and good repeatability are also shown in this paper.

Abstract:A novel and compact magnetic field sensor based on a tapered photonic crystal fiber (PCF) coated with ferrofluid is proposed. It consists of a section of tapered PCF, which is spliced between two single-mode fibers with a waist diameter of 24 mu m. The ferrofluid is filled in the capillary to coat the PCF taper. Experimentally, the refractive index (RI) of the ferrofluid increased under increasing magnetic field intensity (H) with a sensitivity of 4 x 10(-5) RIU/Gs and the RI sensitivity in the evanescent field is 401 nm/RIU. Therefore, the interference spectrum is shifted as the change of H ranged from 100 to 600 Gs with a sensitivity of 16.04 pm/Gs and resolution of 0.62 Gs. The proposed magnetic field sensor is attractive due to its compact size, low cost, and immunity to electromagnetic interference beyond what conventional magnetic field sensors can offer.

Abstract:In this paper, a dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DC-PCF) sensitivity sensor filled with magnetic liquid is introduced and investigated with the finite element method (FEM). To regulate the energy coupling involving the two cores, the magnetic fluid is filled into the pore between the two cores. To adjust the coupling between the supermodes in the DC-PCF, the refractive index (RI) of the air hole filled magnetic fluid may change due to the external magnetic field. This specifically created a magnetic fluid-filled DC-PCF; the magnetic fluid-filled hole is not used as the core for energy transmission, thus avoiding transmission loss. The dip wavelength and the magnetic field displayed an excellent linear connection between 80 and 260 Oe, depending on the numerical data. The detection sensitivity of the magnetic field reached 515.75 pm/Oe at a short fiber length of 482 μm. The designed magnetic fluid-filled DC-PCF has high sensitivity and small volume and has great application prospects in magnetic field detection in the medical and industrial fields.

Abstract:A compact optical fiber magnetic field sensor based on a magnetic-ionic-liquid-functionalized photonic crystal fiber (PCF) has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The magnetic field sensor was fabricated by splicing an index-guiding PCF having one magnetic-ionic-liquid-infiltrated (MIL-infiltrated) air hole in the innermost layer infiltrated with conventional single-mode fibers. The transmission spectral magnetic response of the proposed sensor have been measured and theoretically analyzed. Owing to the effective interaction between the MIL and transmission light as well as the controllable attenuation property of MIL, the magnetic field sensitivity reaches up to -0.01991 dB/Oe for a relatively linear magnetic intensity range of 0 to 440 Oe.

Abstract:A compact highly sensitive microfiber coupler based reflective micro-force sensor is presented. The device is fabricated by fusing two twisted optical fibers and then connecting two of the pigtails to form a Sagnac loop. The sensor has a high force sensitivity of ~3754 nm/N which is three orders of magnitude larger than traditional optical fiber force sensors, and a low detection limit of ~1.6 µN. The good repeatability is also shown in this paper.

Abstract:A microfiber biconically tapered from a standard optical fiber shows obvious sinusoidal oscillatory transmission spectrum due to the multimode interference, with evident blue-shifted peak wavelength when applying an axial force. Based on this force-induced spectral shift, here we experimentally demonstrate compact microfiber strain and force sensors with low optical power and high sensitivity. With a 1.5-μW probing light, measured sensitivity of a 2.5-μm-diameter microfiber for the strain and elongation sensing are 4.84pm/με and 404pm/μm respectively, with a force detection limit down to 50μN.

Abstract:Optical fiber interferometric magnetic field sensors based on magnetostrictive effects have several advantages, e.g., high sensitivity, strong adaptability to harsh environments, long distance transmission, etc. They also have great application prospects in deep wells, oceans, and other extreme environments. In this paper, two optical fiber magnetic field sensors based on iron-based amorphous nanocrystalline ribbons and a passive 3 × 3 coupler demodulation system were proposed and experimentally tested. The sensor structure and the equal-arm Mach–Zehnder fiber interferometer were designed, and the experimental results showed that the magnetic field resolutions of the optical fiber magnetic field sensors with sensing length of 0.25 m and 1 m were 15.4 nT/√Hz @ 10 Hz and 4.2 nT/√Hz @ 10 Hz, respectively. This confirmed the sensitivity multiplication relationship between the two sensors and the feasibility of improving the magnetic field resolution to the pT level by increasing the sensing length.

Abstract:Film bulk acoustic wave resonator (FBAR) is widely-used as RF filter or sensor due to its high frequency and Q-factor. This paper demonstrates the feasibility of FBAR as flexible magnetic sensors, like sticker. The proposed Sensor has a ZnO piezoelectric sandwich structure with magnetostrictive nickel (Ni) electrodes on the Polyimide (PI) substrate. The characteristics of the magnetic sensors have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The testing results show its sensitivity is about 100Hz/Gs.

Abstract:In this study, we propose a fiber-optic magnetic field sensor based on a humanoid fiber structure. Considering that conventional magnetic field sensors are susceptible to electromagnetic interference, in this study we employed a fiber optic fusion splicer and a combiner manufacturing system (CMS) to fabricate a single-mode fiber (SMF), a multimode fiber (MMF), and a seven-core fiber (SCF) fused humanoid fiber optic sensor. Also, this study measured the magnetic field strength by coating the fiber optic sensing region with nickel ferrate (NiFe2O and using the ferromagnetic nature of nickel group compounds. We performed a series of additional tests to assess the sensitivity, accuracy, and reproducibility of our fabricated humanoid fiber structure. Various experimental tests demonstrated that the sensitivity and accuracy of the humanoid fiber optic sensors were 1.1 pm/mT and 0.957, respectively, in an increasing magnetic field, and 0.5 pm/mT and 0.9619, respectively, in a decreasing magnetic field. The magnetic field sensor has proven to be very precise, capable of real-time monitoring, compact in size, and able to measure with minimal loss. As a result, the magnetic field sensor is highly advantageous in healthcare monitoring and geological surveys because of its exceptional accuracy, real-time monitoring capability, compact size, and noninvasive measurement.

Abstract:A novel magnetic field sensor using distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) fiber laser by Ampere’s force effect is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The key sensing element, that is the dual-polarization DBR fiber laser, is fixed on the middle part of two copper plates which carry the current. Ampere’s force is applied onto the coppers due to an external magnetic field generated by a DC solenoid. Thus, the lateral force from the coppers is converted to a corresponding beat frequency signal shift produced by the DBR laser. The electric current sensing is also realized by the same configuration and same principle simultaneously in an intuitive manner. Good agreement between the theory calculation and the experimental results is obtained, which shows a good linearity. This sensor’s sensitivity to the magnetic field and to the electric current finally reaches ~258.92 kHz/mT and ~1.08727 MHz/A, respectively.

Abstract:We report an optical fiber magnetic field sensor by merging the advantages of magnetic fluid and a core-cladding-mode interferometer which is directly fabricated on a standard single-mode fiber by using an arc fusion splicing machine. The sensing performances of the sensors are controllable by designing the parameters of the asymmetric-tapered structure. Experimental results show that the sensor with axial offset of 168 mu m and taper waist diameter of 45 mu m not only has good optical properties but also a relatively high magnetic-field sensitivity of similar to 162.06 pm/mT ranging from 0 to 21.4 mT. The proposed sensors would find potential applications in weak magnetic sensing fields. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:A compact optical fiber magnetic field sensor based on the principle of the Sagnac interferometer is proposed. Different from the conventional ones, a ferrofluid-filled high-birefringence photonic crystal fiber (HB-PCF) is inserted into the Sagnac as a magnetic field sensing element. The refractive index of the ferrofluid filled in the cladding air holes of the HB-PCF will change with respect to the applied magnetic field, and subsequently, the birefringence of the HB-PCF will change, which will affect the shifts of the output interference spectrum in Sagnac. Experiments are carried out to verify the simulation model and the results indicate that the interference spectrum exhibits a red shift with the increment in the magnetic field intensity. The sensitivity of the proposed sensor is up to 0.073 nm/mT for a magnetic field intensity ranging from 10 to 40 mT, while the resolution is 0.001 mT. The proposed magnetic field sensor is attractive due to its compact size, low cost, and immunity to electromagnetic interference beyond what conventional magnetic field sensors can offer.

Abstract:A temperature compensated magnetic field sensor using magnetic fluid (MF) filled exposed core fiber (ECF) has been proposed to detect magnetic field strength and temperature (MFT) simultaneously in this article. The designed sensor was formed by splicing an ECF between two sections of single-mode fibers (SMFs), in which the ECF's exposed side was filled with MF. ECF is a multimode fiber that supports multiple modes of light transmitting and produces mode interference in the core. Different order modes of light excited in the ECF have individual sensitivities to MFT. Therefore, interference spectra of two different pair modes can be monitored to measure MFT simultaneously. The results show that the sensor responds well to MFT. The maximum MFT sensitivities are −0.18 nm/mT and −0.16 nm/lpzrptcircC. The limit of detections (LOD) of MFT is 1.7 mT and 1.9 lpzrptcircC. The sensor is particularly suitable for simultaneous detection of MFT in narrow spaces, such as industrial flaw detection, aerospace, and medical applications.

Abstract:A new type of magnetic sensor based on magnetoelectric(ME) composites has been designed and fabricated. The ME composites has a Terfenol-D/PZT/Terfenol-D structure and its ME coefficient is 0.36 V/cm Oe at room temperture. The sensor has AC magnetic measurement ranges from 0.02 Oe to 12 Oe, reaches a sensitivity of 5×10-3 Oe and has a flat response within 15 kHz. The sensor is equipped with a pre-amplifier and an Root Mean Square(RMS) value convertor.

Abstract:We proposed an optical magnetic field sensor with the temperature correction capability, which is based on an optical microfiber taper (OMT) integrated with magnetic fluid. The OMT is fabricated simply by fused tapering and then sealed into a capillary tube filled with magnetic fluid. The sensor is highly sensitive to magnetic field with the sensitivity of 0.171 nm/Oe in the range of 20-70 Oe at room temperature 25 ???. Moreover, there is a linear relationship between the wavelength shift and temperature in range of 30-80???, and a sensitivity of -0.587 nm/??? has been achieved. Based on these experiments, we provided a sensitivity matrix to correct the errors caused by temperature in order to measure magnetic field more accurately.

Abstract:A kind of novel and compact magnetic field sensor has been proposed and investigated experimentally. The proposed sensor consists of a tapered single mode fiber coupled with a nanostructured magnetic fluid-infiltrated photonic crystal fiber, which is easy to be fabricated. The response of magnetic fluid to magnetic field is used to measure the intensity of magnetic field via whispering gallery mode. The magnetic field-dependent shift in resonance wavelength is observed. The maximum magnetic field intensity sensitivity is 53 pm/mT. The sensor sensitivity is inversely proportional to the thickness of the photonic crystal fiber cladding.

Abstract:We report a magnetic-field sensor by merging the advantages of optical fiber Michelson interferometers with that of magnetic fluid. Compact and low-cost optical fiber Michelson interferometers were first fabricated by a high-frequency CO(2) laser, and then they were inserted into glass capillaries with water-based Fe(3)O(4) magnetic fluid as sensing elements. The sensing characteristics have been investigated and the experimental results show that the reflective spectrum of the fiber-magnetic sensor linearly shifted with the change of the magnetic-field strength that is perpendicular to the axial of the devices. The fiber-magnetic sensor with interference arm's diameter of 50 μm is most sensitive to the external magnetic field, and the sensitivity is up to 64.9 pm/mT, which is 20 times higher than that of 125 μm diameter.
