Abstract:A novel membrane-less microbial fuel cell (ML-MFC) which used the baffles instead of the ion exchange membrane (IEM) was developed for ammonium-containing wastewater treatment and electricity generation. By means of installing an ideal nitrifying unit between the anodic and cathodic chamber, the novel ML-MFC accomplished organics degradation and nitrogen removal without additional loop. The removal efficiencies of COD, NH4+-N and TN achieved 97.07 +/- 0.47%, 91.76 +/- 3.32% and 87.66 +/- 1.59%, respectively. Meanwhile, the effluent pH was near neutral and turbidity was quite low. In addition, the maximum power density of 1.007 +/- 0.032W/m(3) was obtained. Combined with the analysis of microbial community, electroactive bacteria (EAB) Desulfovibrio, Comamonas and Thiobacillus were enriched in biofilm. Considering the superior effluent quality and the promising energy potential, the novel ML-MFC has good application prospects in efficient and sustainable wastewater treatment.

Abstract:A microbial fuel cell (MFC), as a cleaner wastewater treatment process, can recover electricity from organic wastes. However, high power production and high quality effluent are difficult to achieve simultaneously. In this study, a novel filtration composite anode (FCA), which combined carbon fiber brush and carbon textile was proposed to enhance COD removal and power generation performance of MFCs. The COD removal rate constant of MFCs with the filtration composite anode (FCA-MFC) was 033 h(-1), much higher than that of MFCs with single brush anode (FB-MFC) (0.23 h(-1)) or textile anode (FT-MFC) (0.18 h(-1)) in the recirculation mode, and also exceeded that of CA-MFC in non-recirculation mode (0.12 h(-1)). FCA-MFC delivered a maximum power density of 1140 mW m(-2) at a recirculation rate of 2 mL min(-1), which was higher than the FB-MFC (990 mW m(-2)) and the FT-MFC (80 mW m(-2)) and its counterparts in non-recirculation mode (1000 mW m(-2)). Moreover, the FCA-MFC maintained a higher current density (4.0 A m(-2)) than the other two MFCs until the COD decreased to 40 mg L-1 at an external resistance of 100 Omega. CV and EIS tests verified a higher electrochemical performance of the filtration composite anode. These results demonstrated higher COD removals and power generation of the composite anode at ambient temperature, resulting from the filtration effect that facilitated mass transfer, increased microbial colonization, and improved electrochemical activity. Considering the high-quality effluent and high power generation, the filtration composite anode configuration promises a great potential for sustainable wastewater treatment application. High‐Performance Carbon Anode Derived from Sugarcane for Packed Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) provide a new opportunity to produce sustainable energy from the treatment of the organic matter in wastewater. However, the power density of MFCs for large-scale application is limited by the performance of anode, with one of the major factors being low bacterial adhesion capacity. In this work, a novel macroporous sugarcane carbon (SC) is prepared by a direct carbonization process, and is used as anode material in a packed MFC. A maximum power density of 59.94 +/- 2.81Wm(-3) is achieved in an MFC equipped with the SC anode, which is 2.62times higher than that of the granular activated carbon (GAC) anode. A microbial analysis shows that the SC anode has a higher amount of biomass and the abundance of Geobacter is 6.6times higher than that of the GAC anode, which indicates that the SC anode has higher biocompatibility. Further studies show that the macroporous structure, high surface roughness, large surface hydrophobicity and low absolute value of zeta potential favor bacterial adhesion to the SC anode surface. Therefore, this study provides an excellent anode material for high-performance MFCs, and reveals the impact of physicochemical properties on power generation.

Abstract:Background Coking wastewater (CW) is characterized by complex composition, high concentration and toxicity, thereby challenging the treatment technologies. Traditional microbial fuel cell (MFC) is deficient in effluent quality and capital cost. Therefore, integrating the catalytic electrode membrane in separation process in MFC is promising for actual wastewater treatment, while replacing proton exchange membrane (PEM) to reduce cost. Methods A CNF-CFO/PM membrane (blended with carbon nanofiber-CoFe2O4, polyvinylidene fluoride) was prepared via casting and phase inversion. By using this membrane as cathode, activated carbon-loaded electrogenic bacteria as bio-anode, the catalytic membrane cathode-MFC system (CM-MFC) was constructed with quartz sand separating layer (QSL) replacing PEM. Significant findings Modification with CNF-CFO catalyst effectively improved the catalytic and anti-fouling (membrane foulants) property of membrane cathode. The optimal activity of CM-MFC was achieved under 36 h (HRT), with the COD decreasing from 4325.0-5074.3 mg L−1 to 50.0-92.8 mg L−1, and the stable output voltage of ∼0.40 V. The high-throughput sequencing results clarified that the enriched electrogenic bacteria coexisted with other anaerobic bacteria in the anodic chamber and functioned for electron transfer and organics removal. Integrating with the catalysis and filtration processes of membrane cathode, the effluent quality after primary treatment in the anodic chamber was further enhanced.

Abstract:Air-cathodes in microbial fuel cells that can also filter wastewater provide the dual benefits of electricity production and reduction of the effluent chemical oxygen demand. Air-cathodes prepared using a novel activated carbon/graphene membrane (2, 5 or 10% graphene by weight) prepared by phase inversion have good conductivities (5.6 +/- 0.5 to 7.3 +/- 0.6 mS cm(-1)) compared to control (3.0 +/- 0.4 mS cm(-1), activated carbon, no graphene). The cathode with 5 wt% graphene produces the highest maximum power density of 1460 +/- 10 mW m(-2), which is 58% higher than that the control (928 +/- 8 mW m(-2)). The increased power is due to an 88% reduction in charge transfer resistance of 6.0 +/- 0.3 Omega (cathode with 5 wt% graphene) compared to the control. Following a cycle of treatment and current generation, 60 +/- 1% of the chemical oxygen demand is removed from the remaining chemical oxygen demand, producing an effluent chemical oxygen demand concentration of 20 +/- 1 mg L-1. Biomass (4.99 +/- 0.02 mg-protein cm(-2)) is decreased by 33% compared to the control. These results demonstrate that cathodes made with graphene can produce electricity and a high quality effluent with low cathode biofouling.

Abstract:A high-performance and cost-effective cathode is highly desirable for the practical implementation of microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology, used for renewable energy recovery from wastewater. In this study, a monolithic, free-standing air cathode for MFCs is fabricated through a sol-gel-based route. Chlorella pyrenoidosa (CP) is selected as the catalyst precursor, polyacrylonitrile fiber as the precursor for the conductive and supporting skeleton, and deionized water as the solvent and pore former. Agar is also used as the gelling agent to facilitate the formation of 3D porous networks inside the cathodes. By systematically tailoring the porosity of the tubular air cathodes by varying the water content in the CP agar composite hydrogel, the mechanical strength and electrical conductivity of the cathode is optimized. Moreover, this fabrication process leads to abundant active sites for the oxygen reduction reaction and an interconnected hierarchical porous structure with separated transport paths for air supply and ion transfer. The tubular air cathode can be directly employed as an MFC cathode without the use of a polymer binder or other modifications. The MFC delivers a maximum power density of 106.3 ± 5.9 W m- 3, which is approximately 33% higher than that with a converntional Pt/C cathode (79.8 ± 4.1 W m- 3). This work therefore offers a promising new route for recovering bioelectricity from wastewater based on MFCs.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) is a promising and sustainable technology that has high efficiency to produce renewable energy and treat wastewater simultaneously. The effect of carbon materials on the removal of synthetic wastewater in the anodic chamber and electricity generation were investigated using a double chambered MFC. In this study, a double chambered reactor made up of anodic and cathodic chambers separated by proton exchange membrane has been developed. Carbon plate and carbon felt were characterized using scanning electron microscopy. Results revealed that 1.20 times higher chemical oxygen demand removal of synthetic wastewater using carbon felt (50.90%) as compared with that of carbon plate (43.52%). The maximum voltage output produced by carbon felt (280.20 mV) was 20.70% higher than carbon plate (222.20 mV) as cathode in MFC. The surface morphology of carbon materials has significant effect on the oxygen reduction reaction reactivity at cathodic chamber.

Abstract:Scalable production of air cathodes is crucial for applying electrochemical technologies in practical water treatment applications. However, existing fabrication procedures of air cathodes for microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are either complicated or not sufficiently waterproof for larger-scale processes. In this study, an easily imple-mented low-pressure rolling phase inversion method was developed for preparing scalable, waterproof activated carbon air cathodes. An aminated PVDF (NH2-PVDF) membrane was synthesized as a new gas diffusion layer (GDL) to avoid defect formation from contacting organic solvent during cathode fabrication. The cathode was easily enlarged to 1000 cm(2) with a high pressure resistance of 13 +/- 0.7 m H2O height (similar to 137 kPa), exceeding the waterproof capability of previously reported air cathodes. The electrochemical performance of the fabricated air cathode was not affected by the additional membrane. MFCs with the NH2-PVDF cathodes produced a maximum power density of 1010 +/- 40 mW m(-2), consistent with literature values. The cathode was used to generate H2O2 at a rate of 420 +/- 40 mg L-1 h(-1) (25 mA cm(-2)), and nickel catalyst modification further increased the rate to 760 +/- 60 mg L-1 h(-1) (25 mA cm(-2)). Overall, the highly waterproof rolling phase inversion activated carbon air cathodes showed great promise for scaling up biotic and abiotic electrochemical systems for practical applications.
Single-Step Fabrication Using A Phase Inversion Method of Poly(Vinylidene Fluoride) (pvdf) Activated Carbon Air Cathodes for Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:Air cathodes used in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) need to have high catalytic activity for oxygen reduction, but they must also be easy to manufacture, inexpensive, and watertight. A simple one-step, phase inversion process was used here to construct an inexpensive MFC cathode using a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) binder and an activated carbon catalyst. The phase inversion process enabled cathode preparation at room temperatures, without, the need for additional heat treatment, and it produced for the first time a cathode that did not require a separate diffusion layer to prevent water leakage. MFCs using this new type of cathode produced a maximum power density of 1470 +/- 50 mW m(-2) with acetate as a substrate, and 230 +/- 10 mW m(-2) with domestic wastewater. These power densities were similar to those obtained using cathodes made using more expensive materials or more complex procedures, such as cathodes with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) binder and a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) diffusion layer, or a Pt catalyst. Even though the PVDF cathodes did not have a diffusion layer, they withstood up to 1.22 +/- 0.04 m of water head (similar to 12 kPa) without leakage, compared to 0.18 +/- 0.02 m for cathodes made using PTFE binder and PDMS diffusion layer. The cost of PVDF and activated carbon ($3 m(-2)) was less than that of the stainless steel mesh current collector ($12 m(-2)). PVDF-based AC cathodes therefore are inexpensive, have excellent performance in terms of power and water leakage, and they can be easily manufactured using a single phase inversion process at room temperature.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs), as a typical kind of microbial electrochemical technologies (METs), can achieve energy recovery and wastewater treatment. Microbial adhesion on electrodes directly affects microbe-electrode interactions, determining the performance of electricity generation and organic degradation. The anode with suitable structure and operation mode can reduce the limitation of fiber diameter-structure-interface trade-off to enhance microbe-electrode interaction. Here, we fabricated a carbon submicro fiber sponge with fiber diameter close to the size of electrogenic microorganism and operated it in filtration mode to greatly improve energy conversion. The carbon submicro fiber sponge exhibits a superior current yield of 17.4 A m(-2) in the polarization curve with high electrochemical activity in MFC, which is 74% higher than that of the commonly used carbon fiber cloth anode. A higher chemical oxygen demand removal rate of 2.9 kg m(-3) d(-1) is obtained with this novel anode (1.3-fold that of the benchmark). The linkage mechanism of electricity generation and organic degradation is analyzed. Moreover, a long-term stability is demonstrated with excellent current production after the operation over 2 years. Our results indicate that this carbon fiber sponge has remarkable application potential in microbial electrochemical technologies for energy recovery from wastewater.
Power Generation Using an Activated Carbon and Metal Mesh Cathode in A Microbial Fuel Cell

Abstract:An inexpensive activated carbon (AC) air cathode was developed as an alternative to a platinum-catalyzed electrode for oxygen reduction in a microbial fuel cell (MFC). AC was cold-pressed with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) binder to form the cathode around a Ni mesh current collector. This cathode construction avoided the need for carbon cloth or a metal catalyst, and produced a cathode with high activity for oxygen reduction at typical MFC current densities. Tests with the AC cathode produced a maximum power density of 1220mW/m2 (normalized to cathode projected surface area; 36W/m3 based on liquid volume) compared to 1060mW/m2 obtained by Pt catalyzed carbon cloth cathode. The Coulombic efficiency ranged from 15% to 55%. These findings show that AC is a cost-effective material for achieving useful rates of oxygen reduction in air cathode MFCs.

Abstract:A more practical microbial fuel cell system with both catalytic cathode membrane and packed cathode of modified granular activated carbon with manganese dioxide/titanium dioxide/graphitic carbon nitride/(MnO2/TiO2/g-C3N4/GAC) was tested in treating high COD coking wastewater (> 3000 or > 6000 mg L-1). The decreased system internal resistance promoted treatment efficiency and electricity generation. With microbes acclimated, the system achieved both high removals of COD and NH4±-N (> 96%), decreased UV254 from 23.80-34.50 cm-1 in influent to 1.11-1.42 cm-1 in effluent. The capacity in COD removal reached 3.07 kg COD m-3d-1 and the maximum power density was 1680 mW m-3 much higher than those without the packed cathode. This system is feasible for sustainable treatment of coking wastewater.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cell (MFC) can degrade pesticide wastewater and recovery energy simultaneously, and the activated carbon (AC) air cathode has great prospects for practical application. However, insufficient active sites and the limitation of multi-step electron transfer for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) requires that AC should be modified by highly efficient electrocatalysts. Herein, busing the confinement effect of carbon-encapsulated metal and hollow carbon, we designed a unique ORR catalyst of Fe-Fe3O4-NC through utilizing the 2D leaf-like nanoplates of Zn-ZIF-L to load Prussian blue (PB) particles. The volatilization of low-boiled Zn and the catalysis of iron compounds led to the formation of confined walls of hollow carbon shell and carbon-encapsulated Fe/Fe3O4 particles on N-doped carbon substrate. Multivalent iron, a large surface area (368.11 m2·g−1), N doping, a heterojunction interface, and the confinement effect provided all the Fe-Fe3O4-NC-modified AC air cathodes with excellent ORR activity. The optimal samples of AC-Fe-Fe3O4-NC-3 achieved a peak power density of 1213.8 mW·m−2, demonstrating a substantial 82.8% increase over that of the bare AC. Furthermore, its efficiency in glyphosate removal reached 80.1%, surpassing the 23.2% of the bare AC. This study offers new ideas in constructing composite confined structures and the as-designed Fe-Fe3O4-NC is a promising modification candidate for the commercial adoption of AC air cathodes.

Abstract:Constructed wetland-microbial fuel cell (CW-MFC) has exhibited the performance discrepancy between using granular activated carbon (GAC) and columnar activated carbon (CAC) as air-cathode materials. No doubt, this is linked with electrochemical performance and decontaminants characteristics in the CW-MFC system. To provide insight into this performance discrepancy, three CW-MFCs were designed with different carbon-material to construct varied shapes of air-cathodes. The results showed that the ring-shaped cathode filled with GAC yielded a highest voltage of 458 mV with maximum power density of 13.71 mW m-2 and >90% COD removal in the CW-MFC system. The electrochemical characteristics and the electron transport system activity (ETSA) are the driven force to bring the GAC a better electron transportation and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). This will help elucidating underlying mechanisms of different activated carbon for air-cathode and thus promote its large application.

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) hold considerable promise for harnessing the substantial energy resources present in wastewater. However, their practical application in wastewater treatment is limited by inadequate removal of organic matter and inefficient power recovery. Previous studies have investigated aeration as a method to enhance the removal of organic matter, but this method is energy-intensive. To address this issue, this study proposed using MFC-recovered bioelectricity for aeration, thereby mitigating the associated expenses. An air-cathode MFC with multi-anode was constructed and optimized to maximize electricity supply for aeration. Carbon-felt anodes were chosen as the most effective anode configuration, due to the high abundance of electroactive bacteria and genes observed in the biofilm generated on their surface. By incorporating six carbon felt anodes, the MFC achieved a 1.7 and 1.1 fold enhancement in the maximum power and current density, respectively. The optimized MFC unit achieved a stable current density of 0.32 A/m2 and achieved COD removal of 60% in the long-term operation of 140 days in a 50 L reactor. In a reactor scaled up to 1600 L, 72 MFCs successfully powered a mini air pump work for 10 s after an 81-s charging period. The intermittent aeration resulted in partial increases in DO concentrations to 0.03-3.5 mg/L, which is expected to promote the removal of nitrogen compounds by the nitrification-anammox process. These groundbreaking results lay the foundation for self-sustaining wastewater treatment technologies.
Cathodic Biofouling Control by Microbial Separators in Air-Breathing Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) incorporating air-breathing cathodes have emerged as a promising ecofriendly wastewater treatment technology capable of operating on an energy-free basis. However, the inevitable biofouling of these devices rapidly decreases cathodic catalytic activity and also reduces the stability of MFCs during long-term operation. The present work developed a novel microbial separator for use in air-breathing MFCs that protects cathodic catalytic activity. In these modified devices, microbes preferentially grow on the microbial separator rather than the cathodic surface such that biofouling is prevented. Trials showed that this concept provided low charge transfer and mass diffusion resistance values during the cathodic oxygen reduction reaction of 4.6 +/- 1.3 and 17.3 +/- 6.8 U, respectively, after prolonged operation. The maximum power density was found to be stable at 1.06 +/- 0.07 W m-2 throughout a long-term test and the chemical oxygen demand removal efficiency was increased to 92% compared with a value of 83% for MFCs exhibiting serious biofouling. In addition, a cathode combined with a microbial separator demonstrated less cross-cathode diffusion of oxygen to the anolyte. This effect indirectly induced the growth of electroactive bacteria and produced higher currents in air-breathing MFCs. Most importantly, the present microbial separator concept enhances both the lifespan and economics of air-breathing MFCs by removing the need to replace or regenerate the cathode during longterm operation. These results indicate that the installation of a microbial separator is an effective means of stabilizing power generation and ensuring the cost-effective performance of air-breathing MFCs intended for future industrial applications.(c) 2023 The Authors. Ion Exchange Membrane Cathodes For Scalable Microbial Fuel Cells

Abstract:One of the main challenges for using microbial fuel cells (MFCs) is developing materials and architectures that are economical and generate high power densities. The performance of two cathodes constructed from two low-cost anion (AEM) and cation (CEM) exchange membranes was compared to that achieved using an ultrafiltration (UF) cathode, when the membranes were made electrically conductive using graphite paint and a nonprecious metal catalyst (CoTMPP). The best performance in single-chamber MFCs using graphite fiber brush anodes was achieved using an AEM cathode with the conductive coating facing the solution, at a catalyst loading of 0.5 mg/cm(2) CoTMPP. The maximum power density was 449 mW/m(2) (normalized to the projected cathode surface area) or 13.1 W/m(3) (total reactor volume), with a Coulombic efficiency up to 70% in a 50 mM phosphate buffer solution (PBS) using acetate. Decreasing the CoTMPP loading by 40-80% reduced power by 28-56%, with only 16% of the power (72 mW/m(2)) generated using an AEM cathode lacking a catalyst. Using a current collector (a stainless steel mesh) pressed against the inside surface of the AEM cathode and 200 mM PBS, the maximum power produced was further increased to 728 mW/m(2) (21.2 W/m(3)). The use of AEM cathodes and brush anodes provides comparable performance to similar systems that use materials costing nearly an order of magnitude more (carbon paper electrodes) and thus represent more useful materials for reducing the costs of MFCs for wastewater treatment applications.
