Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/alumina composites were formed by simple colloidal processing, and CNTs/rnagnetite composites were prepared using in situ solvothermal synthesis. Additionally, gold nanoparticles were selectively attached onto CNTs through various modifications of the nanotubes. The surface properties of CNTs were changed with a dispersant or by heat treatment with ammonia. Through the electrostatic interaction between components, CNTs were successfully coated with particles of oxide ceramic or metal. The addition of only 0.1 wt% CNTs in the alumina composite increases the fracture toughness from 3.7 to 4.9 MPa m(1/2); this is partly due to a crack bridging effect between the CNTs and the alumina matrix, and the pullout of the CNTs from the matrix. CNTs/magnetite nanocomposites show improved electrical conductivity, owing to the percolation effect of the CNTs, and there is a good dispersion of the CNTs in the matrix.
