Abstract:We propose a spectral efficient radio over wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system by combining optical polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and wireless multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing techniques. In our experiment, a training-based zero forcing (ZF) channel estimation algorithm is designed to compensate the polarization rotation and wireless multipath fading. A 797 Mb/s net data rate QPSK-OFDM signal with error free (<1 × 10(5)) performance and a 1.59 Gb/s net data rate 16QAM-OFDM signal with BER performance of 1.2 × 10(2) are achieved after transmission of 22.8 km single mode fiber followed by 3 m and 1 m air distances, respectively.

Abstract:We report on experimental demonstration of 2x2 MIMO-OFDM 5.6-GHz radio over fiber signaling over 20 km WDM-PON with directly modulated (DM) VCSELs for femtocells application. MIMO-OFDM algorithms effectively compensate for impairments in the wireless link. Error-free signal demodulation of 64 subcarrier 4-QAM signals modulated at 198.5 Mb/s net data rate is achieved after fiber and 2 m indoor wireless transmission. We report BER of 7x10(-3) at the receiver for 16-QAM signals modulated at 397 Mb/s after 1 m of wireless transmission. Performance dependence on different wireless transmission path lengths, antenna separation, and number of subcarriers have been investigated.

Abstract:We propose a polarization division multiplexing (PDM) WDM-PON architecture based on intensity modulation and coherent detection. Single carrier frequency domain equalization (SCFDE) technique is used to effectively combat the linear distortion. And 2×2 multiple inputs multiple outputs (MIMO) algorithm is used to remove the crosstalk between the two orthogonal polarizations. 20-Gb/s PDM-BPSK transmission over 50-km SSMF is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose a long reach double-side band (DSB) time-division-multiplexing PON architecture based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDM-OFDM-PON). To avoid severe power fading induced by chromatic dispersion for DSB long reach transmission, we adopt higher-order modulation and small guard-band between carrier and signal band. 20-Gb/s upstream long-reach DSB TDM-OFDM-PON transmission is experimentally demonstrated over 100-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), enabled by 64-QAM OFDM modulation and 0.85-GHz carrier-to-signal guard-band.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel wavelength-division-multiplexing orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing passive-optical-network (WDM-OFDM-PON) architecture with centralized lightwave sources and polarization shift keying (PolSK) multicast overlay. The 10-Gb/s 16QAM-OFDM point to point (P2P) signal, 2.5-Gb/s multicast PolSK signal and 2.5-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) upstream signal are experimentally demonstrated. After transmission over 25km standard single mode fiber (SMF), 1.5dB crosstalk between the downstream signals is eliminated by employing a low pass electrical filter at the PolSK receiver. The power penalty of the upstream OOK signal at BER of 10(-9) is less than 0.1dB.

Abstract:With the ever-increasing bandwidth demand of the end-customers, the 100-Gb/s access solution has attracted more and more attention. In this letter, we propose a symmetric 100-Gb/s digital signal processing-enhanced time wavelength division multiplexed passive optical networ (TWDM-PON) architecture with four pairs of wavelengths. A 4 x 25-Gb/s TWDM-PON is experimentally demonstrated over a 26.7-km fiber using double sideband (DSB) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation. The reflective semiconductor optical amplifier is deployed in the optical network unit (ONU) to enhance the receiver sensitivity of downstream OFDM signals, and DSB single-carrier frequency domain equalization modulation is used for upstream transmission to reduce the complexity and cost of the ONU.

Abstract:We have implemented a large-capacity, long-haul, and high spectral efficiency photonics-based polarization multiplexing communication system at W-band. The signal delivery up to 119.1 Gb/s with spectral efficiency of 9.9 bit/s/Hz is achieved over a 10 km optic-fiber link and 4600 m wireless link. In our study, we utilize an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme to compensate for the signal impairments caused by the dispersion effect and the wireless multipath effect. Based on a pair of antennas, the antenna polarization multiplexing technique is used to realize the polarization-multiplexed mm-wave signal delivery. Also, only one communication link is required, instead of the complex 2×2 line-of-sight multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) link. Instead of Cassegrain antennas, the combination of plano-convex lens and horn antenna greatly extends the wireless distance. For increasing the spectral efficiency and throughput of the communication system, we employ higher-order modulation formats, probabilistic shaping (PS) techniques, and a series of equalization algorithms. Based on photonics technology, we have created a record-setting distance-rate product of 547.9 Gb/s•km (119.1 Gb/s × 4.6 km) for an independent channel at W-band.

Abstract:A novel subband access scheme for multiband high-speed orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) passive optical network (PON) is proposed, where the granularity of the bandwidth allocation is as small as the bandwidth of just one subcarrier and the ONUs only receives the desired subcarriers according to the bandwidth allocation strategy from the whole downstream OFDM signal without band limitation. Since the ONUs do not have to receive a complete OFDM band, low-bandwidth and low-speed devices can be used to reduce ONU cost. The algorithm used in the scheme is also explained in detail, and a 1-Tb/s experimental system is successfully established to prove the feasibility of the proposed scheme.

Abstract:A novel scheme to generate coherent 21 optical subcarriers with fixed frequency of 25 GHz is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Using these optical subcarriers, we have successfully generated 1.96 Tb/s (21 × 100 Gb/s) polarization-multiplexing optical orthogonal frequency multiplexed (PM-OFDM) polarization multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying (QPSK) optical superchannel signal with optical signal-noise ratio of each subchannel larger than 30 dB (0.1-nm bandwidth). We have transmitted this 1.96-Tb/s optical OFDM superchannel over 3200-km SMF-28 with amplification span of 80 km with erbium-doped fiber amplifier-only.

Abstract:For the first time, we propose and demonstrate a novel three-level Signal allocation scheme OFDM PON architecture which makes the best use of OFDM characteristics. In the architecture, we produce five-carrier signal optically by MZM, use odd carriers modulating downlink data and retain even carriers for uplink data. Multiple signal distribution methods can be switched flexibly. By simulation, a small PON systems with four ONU based on this architecture was realized. Both the downlink and uplink transmission adopt 4-QAM-OFDM signal. The transmission rate will be demonstrated to exceed 10Gbit/s.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel scheme to realize polarization-division-multiplexing quadrature-phase-shift-keying (PDM-QPSK) signal transmission over fiber, wireless and fiber at W-band (75-110 GHz).The generation of polarization multiplexing millimeter-wave (mm-wave) wireless signal is based on the photonic technique.After 20-km fiber transmission, polarization diversity and heterodyne beating are implemented to convert the polarization components of the polarization-multiplexing signals from the optical baseband to W-band so that up to 16 Gb/s mm-wave signals can be delivered over 2-m 2×2 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless link.At the receiver base station (BS), polarization combination reconstructs the PDM-QPSK signal which is then launched into another 20-km fiber.In the experiment, coherent detection is introduced to improve receiver sensitivity and constant modulus algorithm (CMA) is applied for polarization de-multiplexing.The bit-error-ratio (BER) for 16-Gb/s PDM-QPSK signal delivery is below the forward-error-correction (FEC) threshold of 3.8×10 -3 with the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) above 11.8 dB.
