Abstract:We propose a spectral efficient radio over wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system by combining optical polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and wireless multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing techniques. In our experiment, a training-based zero forcing (ZF) channel estimation algorithm is designed to compensate the polarization rotation and wireless multipath fading. A 797 Mb/s net data rate QPSK-OFDM signal with error free (<1 × 10(5)) performance and a 1.59 Gb/s net data rate 16QAM-OFDM signal with BER performance of 1.2 × 10(2) are achieved after transmission of 22.8 km single mode fiber followed by 3 m and 1 m air distances, respectively.

Abstract:We investigate the restriction of double-sideband (DSB) transmission for a next-generation orthogonal frequency division multiplexing passive optical network (OFDM-PON). First, the power fading induced by chromatic dispersion is well described for DSB OFDM signals. Then we show by simulation and experiment that the power fading effect can be made negligible for an access network by employment of high-order modulation and a low radio frequency carrier and allocating subcarriers dynamically according to the power penalty. 20-Gbit/s DSB OFDM transmission over 26.7-km and 100-km standard single-mode fiber is experimentally demonstrated. Compared with single-sideband transmission, the DSB transmitter has a simpler structure, which reduces the access cost or complexity.

Abstract:Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing-passive optical network (OFDM-PON) and single-carrier frequency division multiplexing (SCFDM)-PON are promising solutions for future high-speed PON-based access.A polarization division multiplexing scheme with direct detection is proposed for OFDM-PON to effectively reduce bandwidth requirements for components.However, the scheme strictly requires spectrum overlapping of two orthogonal sidebands and the 4×4 multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) algorithm to eliminate complex cross-polarization interference.In this letter, we propose a polarization interleaving (PI) approach that significantly reduces bandwidth requirements for optical and electrical components while achieving a high-flexibility and low-complexity MIMO algorithm.Downstream single sideband PI-SCFDM transmission is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose a polarization division multiplexing (PDM) WDM-PON architecture based on intensity modulation and coherent detection. Single carrier frequency domain equalization (SCFDE) technique is used to effectively combat the linear distortion. And 2×2 multiple inputs multiple outputs (MIMO) algorithm is used to remove the crosstalk between the two orthogonal polarizations. 20-Gb/s PDM-BPSK transmission over 50-km SSMF is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:The transimission performance of on-off keying (OOK) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) signals in radio-over-fiber (ROF) system is experimentally and theoretically studied. The theoretical results show that OFDM signal is almost not affected by inter-symbel interference (ISI), only with the phase changed, where as OOK signal is seriously affected by ISI. The experiment results show that the eye diagram of 2.5 Gb/s OOK signal is closed when transmitting over 60 km in single mode fiber (SMF), and its bit error rate (BER) can only reach 10~(-3). The constellation of OFDM is clear when ttransmitting over 130 km with BER of 10~(-4). All theoretical and experimental results show that the performance of OFDM is better than that of OOK in ROF system.

The impact of PCF patterns and PCF factor on transmission performance at 40-Gb/s over 100 km are studied and simulated. Abstract:For the first time, we propose and demonstrate a novel three-level Signal allocation scheme OFDM PON architecture which makes the best use of OFDM characteristics. In the architecture, we produce five-carrier signal optically by MZM, use odd carriers modulating downlink data and retain even carriers for uplink data. Multiple signal distribution methods can be switched flexibly. By simulation, a small PON systems with four ONU based on this architecture was realized. Both the downlink and uplink transmission adopt 4-QAM-OFDM signal. The transmission rate will be demonstrated to exceed 10Gbit/s.

Abstract:A novel OFDM-PON structure based on channel characteristic division is proposed to reduce the sampling and computation requirement at the ONUs. In this method, the preprocessed downstream signal propagated to the ONUs is diversely aliased on spectrum by the sub-Nyquist sampling. With the subcarriers in OFDM symbols distorted according to the channel characteristics and overlaid by sections, users can recover the expected original data sent to the specific ONU lossless. Based on this method, the receiving capability of one of the 32 ONUs in a 40-Gb/s 32-QAM channel characteristic division OFDM-PON experiment is tested. The experiment confirms that the sampling rates and FFT sizes can be reduced to 1/32 on average compared to the conventional method. This new method also supports dynamic bandwidth allocations and improves the system efficiency and security by realizing the addressing process in the physical layer.

Abstract:We propose a long reach double-side band (DSB) time-division-multiplexing PON architecture based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDM-OFDM-PON). To avoid severe power fading induced by chromatic dispersion for DSB long reach transmission, we adopt higher-order modulation and small guard-band between carrier and signal band. 20-Gb/s upstream long-reach DSB TDM-OFDM-PON transmission is experimentally demonstrated over 100-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), enabled by 64-QAM OFDM modulation and 0.85-GHz carrier-to-signal guard-band.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel wavelength-division-multiplexing orthogonal-frequency-division-multiplexing passive-optical-network (WDM-OFDM-PON) architecture with centralized lightwave sources and polarization shift keying (PolSK) multicast overlay. The 10-Gb/s 16QAM-OFDM point to point (P2P) signal, 2.5-Gb/s multicast PolSK signal and 2.5-Gb/s on-off keying (OOK) upstream signal are experimentally demonstrated. After transmission over 25km standard single mode fiber (SMF), 1.5dB crosstalk between the downstream signals is eliminated by employing a low pass electrical filter at the PolSK receiver. The power penalty of the upstream OOK signal at BER of 10(-9) is less than 0.1dB.

Abstract:The introduction of OFDM into PON networks is to leverage the merits of OFDM to provide the flexibility and reduce the cost. In this paper, we present our latest works on OFDM-PON. Firstly, we propose and demonstrate a novel OFDM-PON upstream transmission architecture with traffic aggregation by orthogonal band multiplexing. The multiplexed 10Gb/s OFDM signal is collectively received. We also conduct a proof-of-concept experiment to verify the architecture. Secondly, we propose and experimentally demonstrate wavelet packet transform based OFDM (WPT-OFDM) using real-valued transforms, which enables the cost-effective intensity modulation/direct detection (IM/DD). Unlike conventional FFT-based OFDM, the need for cyclic prefix is eliminated due to the time-frequency localization properties of the wavelet.
