Abstract:We propose a spectral efficient radio over wavelength division multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) system by combining optical polarization division multiplexing (PDM) and wireless multiple input multiple output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing techniques. In our experiment, a training-based zero forcing (ZF) channel estimation algorithm is designed to compensate the polarization rotation and wireless multipath fading. A 797 Mb/s net data rate QPSK-OFDM signal with error free (<1 × 10(5)) performance and a 1.59 Gb/s net data rate 16QAM-OFDM signal with BER performance of 1.2 × 10(2) are achieved after transmission of 22.8 km single mode fiber followed by 3 m and 1 m air distances, respectively.

Abstract:We report on experimental demonstration of 2x2 MIMO-OFDM 5.6-GHz radio over fiber signaling over 20 km WDM-PON with directly modulated (DM) VCSELs for femtocells application. MIMO-OFDM algorithms effectively compensate for impairments in the wireless link. Error-free signal demodulation of 64 subcarrier 4-QAM signals modulated at 198.5 Mb/s net data rate is achieved after fiber and 2 m indoor wireless transmission. We report BER of 7x10(-3) at the receiver for 16-QAM signals modulated at 397 Mb/s after 1 m of wireless transmission. Performance dependence on different wireless transmission path lengths, antenna separation, and number of subcarriers have been investigated.

Abstract:We propose a long reach double-side band (DSB) time-division-multiplexing PON architecture based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDM-OFDM-PON). To avoid severe power fading induced by chromatic dispersion for DSB long reach transmission, we adopt higher-order modulation and small guard-band between carrier and signal band. 20-Gb/s upstream long-reach DSB TDM-OFDM-PON transmission is experimentally demonstrated over 100-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), enabled by 64-QAM OFDM modulation and 0.85-GHz carrier-to-signal guard-band.

Abstract:We demonstrate 200 Gb/s bidirectional coherent PON solutions using a simplified optical network unit (ONU) over 19 km of field-installed fiber. The ONU receiver is a single-polarization heterodyne detector with either a balanced or a single-ended photodetector and the transmitter is based on dual-polarization electro-absorption modulated laser (EML). The optical line terminal (OLT) uses standard dual-polarization coherent transceivers. The downstream solutions achieve 37 dB and 30.5 dB power budget for the receiver with balanced and single-ended photodiodes, respectively. For the upstream, two line rates have been investigated: 200 Gb/s/ for symmetrical transmission and 100 Gb/s/ for asymmetric transmission achieving a power budget of 30.1 dB and 40.9 dB respectively.

Abstract:A low-complexity and cost-efficient coherent detection-based 100 Gb/s or beyond passive optical network (PON) has attracted a lot of attention in recent years, as this technology offers high receiver sensitivity, colorless frequency selectivity, and linear detection enabling channel impairment compensation in the digital domain. We experimentally demonstrate the first single-wavelength 200 Gb/s coherent PON over 20 km downstream transmission with polarization division multiplexed four-level pulsed amplitude modulation (PDM-PAM-4) signals in the C-band. The intensity modulator replaces the costly in-phase/quadrature modulator, and hardware-efficient carrier recovery technologies are used for recovery of PAM-4 symbols. By using optimized Nyquist pulse shaping, the transceiver bandwidth can be reduced to within 50 GHz. A maximum power budget of 32.5 dB can be achieved for 200 Gb/s/λ PDM-PAM-4 at a bit error rate of 1 × 10 − 2 over 20 km fiber transmission. The possibility of a 200 Gb/s/λ PON is investigated using intensity modulation and coherent detection for the first time to our knowledge.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate the downstream transmission of a 100 Gb/s/lambda time division multiplexed passive optical network (TDM-PON) based on four-level pulsed amplitude modulation (PAM-4) in the O-band using 10 Gbps transmitters with semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and digital signal processing (DSP) at the receiver. Considering the soft-decision FEC (SD-FEC) threshold (1 x 10(-2)), power budget of 30.3 dB and 29.3 dB have been achieved after 22 km and 50 km fiber transmission, respectively. There is no observable dispersion penalty after 22 km and 50 km transmission. The possibility of 100 Gb/s/lambda PON is first investigated using intensity modulation and direct detection (IM/DD) schemes rather than coherent detection schemes.

Abstract:We propose and experimentally demonstrate a very-high-throughput coherent ultradense wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (UDWDM-PON) with its bandwidth efficiency enhanced using Nyquist-independent-sideband (N-ISB) modulation. The proposed optical line terminal (OLT) suggests 75 downlink optical subcarriers. For each optical subcarrier, there are as many as 16, 10-Gb/s N-ISB digital channels modulated on it, which can be efficiently generated using only one set of optical transmitter hardware. Experimental results show that the proposed UDWDM-PON is capable of accommodating 1200 10G users within an optical distribution network loss budget of 35.5 dB, and achieve a total throughput of 12 Tb/s and a spectral efficiency of 5.628-b/s/Hz. More importantly, the proposed system with spectral- and bandwidth-efficient N-ISB requires 16 times less downlink optical transmitters at the OLT, which can be translated into savings in cost, power consumption, and footprint. In addition, key techniques, such as N-ISB modulation in a PON system, frequency-locked optical multicarrier generation, and digital pre-equalization, are also studied.

Abstract:We demonstrate the 40-Gb/s upstream transmission in the 60-km reach wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM PON) implemented by using directly modulated reflective semiconductor optical amplifiers (RSOAs) and self-homodyne receivers. It is difficult to operate the RSOA at 40 Gb/s due to its limited modulation bandwidth. To overcome this problem and generate 40-Gb/s upstream signal, we utilize the quadrature phase-shift-keying (QPSK) format and the offset polarization-division-multiplexing (PDM) technique. For this purpose, we install two RSOAs at each ONU and provide the seed light for these RSOAs by polarization-multiplexing the outputs of two lasers with a small frequency offset (20 GHz). This frequency offset is used to separate the polarization-multiplexed seed light by using a simple delay-line interferometer (DLI), instead of the polarization-beam splitter and polarization controller, at the ONU. The separated seed light is modulated by each RSOA at 20 Gb/s in the QPSK format, and then combined again by the DLI before sent back to the central office (CO). The results show that this WDM PON can support the transmission of 40-Gb/s channels spaced at 50 GHz over 60 km without using any remote optical amplifiers.

Abstract:A novel symmetric WDM-PON scheme with colorless ONU is proposed. The baseband 4-ASK Fast-OFDM signal is upconverted by an intermediate frequency carrier, reserving a frequency gap between the FOFDM signal and the optical carrier. After distributing different wavelengths to corresponding ONU by AWG, periodic BPFs are employed to extract the optical carriers for upstream transmission, achieving colorless ONUs. A WDM-PON system with 16 colorless ONUs is established, and 10-Gb/s symmetric transmission for each ONU is also realized. Experiment shows that the system tolerance to the intrachannel crosstalk is greatly improved when the crosstalk signal locates at relatively higher frequency band.

Abstract:We first experimentally demonstrate the ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexing passive optical network (UD-WDM-PON) system at 9.95 Gb/s per wavelength on a 12.5-GHz grid, adopting digital pre-equalization considering narrow-band optical filtering effect at the transmitter. Eight optical carriers with 12.5-GHz frequency spacing carry 9.95-Gb/s digital pre-equalized binary signals (on-off keying) and are optically filtered. 25- and 45-km single-mode fiber (SMF)-28 downlink transmissions are experimentally demonstrated. The bit-error ratio for each of the eight channels is less than 1.0 x 10(-9) after transmission over 25-km SMF-28.

Abstract:For the first time, we propose and demonstrate a novel three-level Signal allocation scheme OFDM PON architecture which makes the best use of OFDM characteristics. In the architecture, we produce five-carrier signal optically by MZM, use odd carriers modulating downlink data and retain even carriers for uplink data. Multiple signal distribution methods can be switched flexibly. By simulation, a small PON systems with four ONU based on this architecture was realized. Both the downlink and uplink transmission adopt 4-QAM-OFDM signal. The transmission rate will be demonstrated to exceed 10Gbit/s.

Abstract:Wavelength-division-multiplexing passive optical network (WDM-PON) is a promising architecture for next-generation access networks because of its large bandwidth, protocol transparency and scalability. In this paper, we propose a cost-effective, high-speed upstream WDM-PON scheme adopting polarization division multiplexed (PDM) on-off keying (OOK) modulation at the optical network unit (ONU) and digital coherent/self-coherent detection with a novel blind dual-modulus equalization algorithm at the optical line terminal (OLT). As such, the upstream capacity can be directly enhanced at low ONU expenditure, and receiver sensitivity as well as power budget can be also improved. Enabled by the scheme, 40-Gb/s upstream transmission in 80-km WDM-PON is experimentally demonstrated. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America
